This love is inspired by the Gospel of the Beatitudes, of the poverty of Jesus, and of his concern for the poor. Love for the poor is even one of the motives for the duty of working so as to "be able to give to those in need." ''The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born (Matthew 26:24).'' The primary thought of the suicidal is that it would be better for everyone if he or she had not been born. That God made a mistake with them. This is the plot of "It's a Wonderful Life" and all its derivatives. Would it '''REALLY''' have been better for '''EVERYONE''' if any one person had not been born? Would it really be better for '''ANYONE''' if '''YOU''' had not been born? We find this statement to be true especially for Judas. Dante, in his ''Inferno'', declares that Judas is one of the three frozen in the deepest part of Hell. He's stuck there with Brutus and Cassius, Julius Caesar's assassins. Being eternally devoured by Satan. It would have been better for him had he not been born. But it would not be good for you. Jesus had to be betrayed. The Jewish leaders would not move against Him. If Jesus not been betrayed He would not have died. And your sins would not be forgiven. But Jesus was betrayed. He did die. And He rose again to open the gates of Heaven for you who believe in Him. Amen.

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs: - 557 (in 'Jesus' ascent to Jerusalem') - "When the days drew near for him to be taken up [Jesus] set his face to go to Jerusalem." By this decision he indicated that he was going up to Jerusalem prepared to die there. Three times he had announced his Passion and Resurrection; now, heading toward Jerusalem, Jesus says: "It cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem." - 474 (in 'Christ's Soul and his human knowledge') - By its union to the divine wisdom in the person of the Word incarnate, Christ enjoyed in his human knowledge the fullness of understanding of the eternal plans he had come to reveal (abbreviated). - 649 (in 'The Resurrection - A Work of the Holy Trinity') - As for the Son, he effects his own Resurrection by virtue of his divine power. Jesus announces that the Son of man will have to suffer much, die, and then rise (abbreviated). - 536 (in 'The Baptism of Jesus') - The baptism of Jesus is on his part the acceptance and inauguration of his mission as God's suffering Servant. He allows himself to be numbered among sinners; he is already "the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world". Already he is anticipating the "baptism" of his bloody death. Already he is coming to "fulfil all righteousness", that is, he is submitting himself entirely to his Father's will: out of love he consents to this baptism of death for the remission of our sins (abbreviated). - 1225 (in 'Christ's Baptism') - In his Passover Christ opened to all men the fountain of Baptism. He had already spoken of his Passion, which he was about to suffer in Jerusalem, as a "Baptism" with which he had to be baptized. The blood and water that flowed from the pierced side of the crucified Jesus are types of Baptism and the Eucharist, the sacraments of new life. From then on, it is possible "to be born of water and the Spirit" in order to enter the Kingdom of God. 'See where you are baptized, see where Baptism comes from, if not from the cross of Christ, from his death. There is the whole mystery: he died for you. In him you are redeemed, in him you are saved.' - 618 (in 'Our Participation in Christ's sacrifice') - He calls his disciples to "take up [their] cross and follow (him)",for "Christ also suffered for (us), leaving (us) an example so that (we) should follow in his steps" (abbreviated). - 1551 (in 'In the person of Christ the Head') - This priesthood is ministerial. "That office . . . which the Lord committed to the pastors of his people, is in the strict sense of the term a service." It is entirely related to Christ and to men. It depends entirely on Christ and on his unique priesthood; it has been instituted for the good of men and the communion of the Church. the sacrament of Holy Orders communicates a "sacred power" which is none other than that of Christ. the exercise of this authority must therefore be measured against the model of Christ, who by love made himself the least and the servant of all (abbreviated). - 1570 (in 'The Ordination of deacons - 'in order to serve') - Deacons share in Christ's mission and grace in a special way. The sacrament of Holy Orders marks them with an imprint (“character") which cannot be removed and which configures them to Christ, who made himself the "deacon" or servant of all (abbreviated). Haven't we overdosed on true crime docos yet?In the mid-1970s a wave of brutal attacks took place in greater New York City. Hello and welcome to season 3 episode 17 of The Berean Manifesto, 10 minutes or so a week of Faith, Hope, and Love for the modern Christian.  This is Pastor Bill of The Ekklesian House and in this installment we are going to be talking about something that might invoke some mixed emotions.  That's fine, I get it. There is a story about the passion of the Bishop of Myra, Nicholas, at the Council of Nicaea.  That's right, St. Nicholas.  One of the main topics of the council was for church leaders to officially declare what they believed about The Trinity.  Mainly the question was whether Jesus was God.  All the church congregational leaders pretty much agreed on what books written before Christ, except for a few, were considered canon (sorry Enoch and the Maccabees).  However, the Bible, especially the New Testament, wasn't as well defined as it is now, and different congregations were studying letters from different leaders that taught varying, and often contradictory, viewpoints.  While one church leader, Arius of Egypt, was presenting his case that Jesus wasn't God, wasn't ever God, and currently exists in Heaven with a status just below God, Nicholas crossed the room and hit Arius knocking him to the floor.  More of a slap.  Nicholas spent the night in jail, but ultimately, the Council agreed with his point of view. What they agreed upon is the following, as translated by Philip Schaff; We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, begotten of the Father the only-begotten; that is, of the essence of the Father, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance (ὁμοούσιον) with the Father; by whom all things were made both in heaven and on earth; who for us men, and for our salvation, came down and was incarnate and was made man; he suffered, and the third day he rose again, ascended into heaven; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. And in the Holy Ghost. But those who say: 'There was a time when he was not;' and 'He was not before he was made;' and 'He was made out of nothing,' or 'He is of another substance' or 'essence,' or 'The Son of God is created,' or 'changeable,' or 'alterable'—they are condemned by the holy catholic and apostolic Church. We're still having a version of this debate today.  Some church leaders teaching their congregations that while Jesus was on Earth, He was one hundred percent God and one hundred percent man.  While other church leaders are teaching that while Jesus was on Earth, He was only man.  Both sides then adamantly insisting that those teaching the other point of view are guilty of heresy and that their congregation should avoid those of the other point of veiw and warn others to do so as well.  At The Berean Manifesto, we encourage a dispassionate study of the scriptures to decide what you believe for yourself.  You study the scriptures, let them speak for themselves, whether or not you were invested in a different theology you let the scripture then inform your theology: a dispassionate study. No theologian, that I know of, is currently disputing, that Jesus was God and was with God before creation began.  Right?, They're not disputing John 1:1.  Nor are they disputing that He is currently God, i.e. most of Paul's writings.  What's being disputed is the nature of Jesus while he was walking the Earth.  We're going to take a look at some scripture.  But for me, I've never needed to go further than Philippians 2:5-9 CSB to know what I believe on the topic.  It says, “[5] Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus, [6] who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited. [7] Instead he emptied himself by assuming the form of a servant, taking on the likeness of humanity. And when he had come as a man, [8] he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death—even to death on a cross. [9] For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name,”  Christ emptied Himself, poured out His divinity, to become a human being and humbled Himself as a human to the point of death on a cross - after which He was exalted.  At the very least that passage casts doubt on the fully God and fully man viewpoint.  Or we could consider Luke 7:28 CSB where Jesus says, “I tell you, among those born of women no one is greater than John, but the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”  Now last I checked Jesus was born of a woman.  Unless you want me to believe that Jesus just endorsed John as being greater than God… What really doesn't help the case of the fully God and fully man group is the widely used argument that if Jesus was fully man that means that we can do all the things that He did while He was on Earth.  Which is a really interesting stance to make since it's exactly what Jesus said in John 14:12 CSB, except Jesus even ups the ante, He says, “[12] ‘Truly I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do. And he will do even greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.”   It's pretty clear which side of this imaginary fence I stand on, but I'm going to read you some scriptures that I recommend you look into for yourself to see where you stand on this belief. Luke 2:51-52 CSB, “[51] Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them. His mother kept all these things in her heart. [52] And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and with people.”  Hebrews 1:4 CSB, “[4] So he became superior to the angels, just as the name he inherited is more excellent than theirs.” Hebrews 2:14-18 CSB, “[14] Now since the children have flesh and blood in common, Jesus also shared in these, so that through his death he might destroy the one holding the power of death—that is, the devil— [15] and free those who were held in slavery all their lives by the fear of death. [16] For it is clear that he does not reach out to help angels, but to help Abraham's offspring. [17] Therefore, he had to be like his brothers and sisters in every way, so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in matters pertaining to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people. [18] For since he himself has suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.” Hebrews 4:14-15 CSB, “[14] Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens—Jesus the Son of God—let us hold fast to our confession. [15] For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin.” Hebrews 5:5-10 CSB, “[5] In the same way, Christ did not exalt himself to become a high priest, but God who said to him, You are my Son; today I have become your Father, [6] also says in another place, You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. [7] During his earthly life, he offered prayers and appeals with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. [8] Although he was the Son, he learned obedience from what he suffered. [9] After he was perfected, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, [10] and he was declared by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.” Galatians 4:1-7 CSB, “[1] Now I say that as long as the heir is a child, he differs in no way from a slave, though he is the owner of everything. [2] Instead, he is under guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. [3] In the same way we also, when we were children, were in slavery under the elements of the world. [4] When the time came to completion, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, [5] to redeem those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. [6] And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba, Father!” [7] So you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then God has made you an heir.  That isn't as easy on it's face to see, but I like the analogy there of as long as the heir is a child, he differs in no way from a slave.  As long as Jesus was a human he differed in no way from other humans, a slave.  And even though He was the owner of everything, having been God before He was born.  Instead, He was a slave and under guardians and trustees until the time for His crucifixion. OK, look up those scriptures and based off of what scripture says, decide what you believe about the theological substance of Jesus when he was on Earth and firmly tuck that belief in your pocket as a personal belief that isn't worthy of creating divisiveness between believers and arguing about.  It isn't worthy of throwing mud at other people trying to share the Gospel and telling people to avoid other Christians.  It's not worth it, it's not worth it.  It's worth it, I'm going to say it again.  It is not worth it.  Because 1 John 4:2-3 CSB says, “[2] This is how you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, [3] but every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming; even now it is already in the world.”  Why would we argue with others who have the Spirit of God when we can support each other in love and provoke each other to good works instead?  When we can fulfill the calling of The Church instead of in-fighting and divisiveness, and all the things that the enemy wants for The Church.  Why would we embrace those things?  When we can tuck those in our pocket and just know they are our personal belief and love each other. This is Pastor Bill saying, “Until next time…”

Hebrews 1:3 NLT  'The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven.' In certain Christian worship traditions the Nicene Creed is recited as part of the liturgy. It is a succinct declaration of essential Christian belief and was created to counter a variety of ideas that were constantly being presented about the nature of God and God’s purpose in history. Often called the ‘Symbol of Faith’, it means a bringing together of evidence to establish the truth about God. In both Latin and Greek, the word ‘symbol’ means token for identification in contrast with something counterfeit.   For the Church, Jesus is the evidence that God’s sunshine overcomes everything that we are confronted with in life. I’m invited to place my confidence in the enduring sun that forever shines behind the darkest and deepest of cloud cover. I can only do this with an act of faith in something I may feel is distant from my current experience. In the storms of life, I become subject to extremes of emotion and the inner turmoil deeply disturbs and distresses me. I am always amazed at the exhaustion that accompanies such personal storms. Hence the Creed for which I am so grateful. For under pressure I run out of both the words and the will to pray and exclaim a spontaneous yell of: “Help me, Lord!”   Neither my faith nor its declaration may shift the clouds that hide the sunshine. But I can choose to believe in its existence with nothing but my personal conviction.   How do you manage choices in times of trouble? Are you able to look towards the sunshine? Perhaps having the Creed memorised might prove useful in times of darkness. I hold onto the sunshine of God’s promise as the only true guarantor of my life, present and future.   QUESTION: Do you need to call out to Jesus today for help?   PRAYER: Lord, help me today [name a specific need]. I thank you that you have heard me, and choose to believe in the sunshine beyond the clouds.

He often argued within the framework of rabbinical interpretation of the Law. Yet Jesus could not help but offend the teachers of the Law, for he was not content to propose his interpretation alongside theirs but taught the people “as one who had authority, and not as their scribes"...In presenting with divine authority the definitive interpretation of the Law, Jesus found himself confronted by certain teachers of the Law who did not accept his interpretation of the Law, guaranteed though it was by the divine signs that accompanied it. This was the case especially with the sabbath laws, for he recalls often with rabbinical arguments, that the sabbath rest is not violated by serving God and neighbor, which his own healings did." (abbreviated) - 2173 (in 'The Sabbath Day') - The Gospel reports many incidents when Jesus was accused of violating the sabbath law. But Jesus never fails to respect the holiness of this day. He gives this law its authentic and authoritative interpretation: “The sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath.” With compassion, Christ declares the sabbath for doing good rather than harm, for saving life rather than killing. The sabbath is the day of the Lord of mercies and a day to honor God. “The Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.” - 586 (in 'Jesus and the Temple') - Far from having been hostile to the Temple, where he gave the essential part of his teaching, Jesus was willing to pay the Temple-tax, associating with him Peter, whom he had just made the foundation of his future Church. He even identified himself with the Temple by presenting himself as God's definitive dwelling-place among men (abbreviated). - 590 (in 'Jesus and Israel's faith in the One God and Saviour') - Only the divine identity of Jesus' person can justify so absolute a claim as "He who is not with me is against me"; and his saying that there was in him "something greater than Jonah,. . . greater than Solomon", something "greater than the Temple"; his reminder that David had called the Messiah his Lord, and his affirmations, "Before Abraham was, I AM", and even "I and the Father are one." - 2100 (in 'Sacrifice') - Outward sacrifice, to be genuine, must be the expression of spiritual sacrifice: "The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit...." The prophets of the Old Covenant often denounced sacrifices that were not from the heart or not coupled with love of neighbor. Jesus recalls the words of the prophet Hosea: "I desire mercy, and not sacrifice" (abbreviated). Got a Bible question? The Berean Manifesto

Hello and welcome to season 2 episode 72 of The Berean Manifesto, brought to you by The Ekklesian House.  This is Pastor Bill and over the next 12 minutes, or so, we are going to talk about something that might invoke some mixed emotions.  That's fine, I get it. There's a story about the passion of the Bishop of Myra, Nicholas, at the Council of Nicaea.  One of the main topics of the council was for church leaders to officially declare what they believed about The Trinity.  Mainly the question was whether Jesus was God.  All the church congregational leaders pretty much agreed on what books written before Christ, except for a few, were considered canon.  However, the Bible wasn't as well defined as it is now, and different congregations were studying letters from different leaders that taught varying viewpoints.  While one church leader, Arius of Egypt, was presenting his case that Jesus wasn't God, wasn't ever God, and currently exists with a status just below God, Nicholas crossed the room and hit Arius. Both sides then adamantly insisting that those teaching the other point of view are guilty of heresy and that there congregation should avoid them and warn others to do so as well. They're not disputing John 1:1. [9] For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name,”  Christ emptied Himself, poured out His divinity, to become a human being and humbled Himself as a human to the point of death on a cross.  After which He was exalted. What really doesn't help the case of the fully God and fully man group is the widely used argument that if Jesus was fully man that means that we can do all the things that He did while He was on Earth.

Mark 2: 1-12- 'The Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.' CCC Passages: - 1502-1503 ('The Sick person before God') - Illness becomes a way to conversion; God’s forgiveness initiates the healing...Jesus has the power not only to heal, but also to forgive sins; he has come to heal the whole man, soul and body; he is the physician the sick have need of (abbreviated) - 1421 (in 'The Sacraments of Healing') - The Lord Jesus Christ, physician of our souls and bodies, who forgave the sins of the paralytic and restored him to bodily health, has willed that his Church continue, in the power of the Holy Spirit, his work of healing and salvation, even among her own members. This is the purpose of the two sacraments of healing: the sacrament of Penance and the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. - 1441 (in 'Only God forgives sin') - Only God forgives sins. Since he is the Son of God, Jesus says of himself, “The Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins” and exercises this divine power: “Your sins are forgiven.” Further, by virtue of his divine authority he gives this power to men to exercise in his name. - 430 (in 'Jesus') - Since God alone can forgive sins, it is God who, in Jesus his eternal Son made man, “will save his people from their sins.” (abbreviated) - 1484 (in 'The Celebration of the Sacrament of Penance') - Christ is at work in each of the sacraments. He personally addresses every sinner: “My son, your sins are forgiven'' (abbreviated) - 2616 (in 'Jesus hears our prayer') - Prayer to Jesus is answered by him already during his ministry, through signs that anticipate the power of his death and Resurrection: Jesus hears the prayer of faith, expressed in words (the leper, Jairus, the Canaanite woman, the good thief) or in silence (the bearers of the paralytic, the woman with a hemorrhage who touches his clothes, the tears and ointment of the sinful woman) (abbreviated) - 574 (in 'Jesus & Israel') - Because of certain of his acts— expelling demons, forgiving sins, healing on the sabbath day, his novel interpretation of the precepts of the Law regarding purity, and his familiarity with tax collectors and public sinners—some ill-intentioned persons suspected Jesus of demonic possession. He is accused of blasphemy and false prophecy, religious crimes which the Law punished with death by stoning. - 589 (in 'Jesus & Israel's faith in the one God and Saviour') - Jesus gave scandal above all when he identified his merciful conduct toward sinners with God’s own attitude toward them He went so far as to hint that by sharing the table of sinners he was admitting them to the messianic banquet. But it was most especially by forgiving sins that Jesus placed the religious authorities of Israel on the horns of a dilemma. Were they not entitled to demand in consternation, “Who can forgive sins but God alone?” By forgiving sins Jesus either is blaspheming as a man who made himself God’s equal or is speaking the truth, and his person really does make present and reveal God’s name. - 473 (in 'Christ's Soul & his human knowledge') - The Son in his human knowledge also showed the divine penetration he had into the secret thoughts of human hearts (abbreviated) --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/daily-gospel-exegesis/message

The Holy Gospel according to Saint Matthews"22.When they were together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, 'The Son of man is going to be delivered into the power of men; 23.they will put him to death, and on the third day he will be raised up again.' And a great sadness came over them. 24.When they reached Capernaum, the collectors of the half-shekel came to Peter and said, 'Does your master not pay the half-shekel?' 25.'Yes,' he replied, and went into the house. But before he could speak, Jesus said, 'Simon, what is your opinion? From whom do earthly kings take toll or tribute? From their sons or from foreigners?' 26.And when he replied, 'From foreigners,' Jesus said, 'Well then, the sons are exempt. 27.However, so that we shall not be the downfall of others, go to the lake and cast a hook; take the first fish that rises, open its mouth and there you will find a shekel; take it and give it to them for me and for yourself.'"

Luke 24:1-12 (NKJV) 1  Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2  But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 3  Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4  And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. 5  Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6  He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, 7  saying, 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.' " 8  And they remembered His words. 9  Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10  It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. 11  And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them. 12  But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.

In part one (0:00-19:30), the guys discuss what “son of” means in our current culture. They bring up certain phrases like “Sons of Anarchy,” “Sons of Liberty,” etc. Tim says this means that someone identifies with an idea or ideology. Tim then offers the fact that historically people have referred to Jesus as Christ. Christ is actually a Greek word meaning Messiah. Messiah in Hebrew means the anointed one. Tim then says that Jesus never referred to himself as Christ or Messiah, and when others would refer to him as this, he would reply that he is the “Son of Man.” Why is this? For example in Luke 9:18-22: "Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, 'Who do the crowds say I am?' They replied, 'Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.' 'But what about you?' he asked. 'Who do you say I am?' Peter answered, 'God’s Messiah.' Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone. And he said, 'The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.'" Jesus refers to himself as the Son of Man in the third person immediately after Peter called him the Messiah. Tim then posits that Paul doesn’t use the phrase “the Son of Man” in his writings. Instead, he uses phrases like “the firstborn of all creation” or “the new humanity.” Tim says this is because Paul is taking the message of Jesus to an international audience that isn’t familiar with what the Son of Man means. So what does the Son of Man mean? And where does it come from? Well in part two (19:30-32:00), Tim takes us to Daniel 7, a famous dream that Daniel had where the Son of Man appears. Tim says that this dream is very iconic and well known in Jewish history. Everyone would have known about it. Daniel has a dream about a succession of beasts that trample humanity. There are thrones established in the heavens over the earth, but only one of them is filled. It’s filled by the Ancient of Days, which is Daniel’s phrase for God/Yahweh. So there is an empty throne, then a figure called the Son of Man rides up on a cloud to the Ancient of Days. The Son of Man is presented to the Ancient of Days and then is given dominion. The Son of Man then sits down on the empty throne. In part three (32:00-end), the guys break down the phrase the Son of Man. If someone refers to themselves as “the Dark Knight,” people automatically know that they are referring to Batman. Similarly, if someone calls themselves “the Son of Man,” they are referring to a certain character in the Hebrew storyline. They discuss what it means for Jesus to be comfortable inserting himself into Daniel’s dream. Thank you to all of our supporters!
