Explore the profound significance of Communion and the transformative journey of the Apostle Paul. Communion, also known as the Lord's Supper, commemorates the Last Supper Jesus shared with His disciples and signifies unity among believers. This practice has evolved over time, with different Christian denominations holding various interpretations, from transubstantiation in the Roman Catholic Church to symbolic remembrance in Protestant traditions. World Communion Sunday emphasizes global Christian unity, reminding us of our shared faith. The Apostle Paul's dramatic transformation from a persecutor of Christians to a devoted apostle highlights the power of faith and redemption. His encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus and subsequent mission to spread the Gospel provide foundational teachings for Christianity. Reflect on how Communion fosters unity and how Paul's story can inspire your faith journey. What is Maundy-Thursday? This is the day of Holy Week in which we come together to remember the Last Supper Jesus had with His disciples. It isn't the Last Supper in the sense that this is the last time that Jesus will eat with His disciples, as He will after His resurrection. It is the Last Supper because this is the Last Passover meal that will ever be observed in the Old Testament way. This is the moment where Redemptive History reaches a tipping point. Everything is going to be new. Elements that used to represent freedom from Egypt for over a  thousand of years, are, in a single meal, going to be redefined, given their true meaning.  Bread and wine are now going to represent the body and blood of Jesus poured out for them in the ultimate expression of love ever demonstrated. They will become the new signs, sacraments, of the New Covenant, a source of blessing and spiritual nourishment for Christians in the coming millennia.  So what does Jesus do after that? Jesus changed the Passover and is about to go to the cross. What is he going to say to His disciples? What does He want them to know before He dies? Here we come to John chapter 15. It is an immensely popular passage for a reason. Doubtless you've all heard sermons out of it and maybe even have portions of it memorized. I'm willing to bet, though, if you are anything like me, you probably don't rejoice in it as much as you should. So I am going to lead you through this passage as we look together at some of the wonderfully comforting and challenging chapters in John's Gospel. We are going to look at How we are connected to God and How we grow in our connection with Christ.

Arnie and Fred continue to discuss some of other people who through various circumstances had close contact or unusual experiences with Jesus, who recognized the special attributes that were unique to Him. They became witnesses which were led to distinctly different conclusions regarding His identity.  In this episode we pick up the record John wrote of the Levitical police officers that were sent to arrest Jesus. We note their impression of Jesus which they related to the religious leaders after they refused to arrest Him.  We next look at John's record of the blind man Jesus healed, his conclusions about Jesus and the reaction of the Scribes and Pharisees when they encountered him. John also recorded the time that Jesus resurrected His friend Lazarus. Jesus spoke with Martha, Lazarus' sister at this time and John records that discussion. We key in on what she had to say. There were a number of Jerusalem Jews there also who witnessed what Jesus did. We talk about what John recorded of their reaction. John records the discussion that the Chief Priests and Pharisees at Jerusalem had about Jesus and the miracles He had performed, and we look at that. We close out this episode at the Passover, looking at the reaction of the multitude that was there for that feast when Jesus entered Jerusalem, and at the Last Supper Jesus had with His apostles at that time. Take about 30-minutes to listen in on our discussion. Have your Bible handy so you can verify what we are saying. There is a transcript provided of this Buzzsprout episode for your convenience.

The Father sent the Son and the Son descended from Heaven via the incarnation. In the incarnation Jesus humbled Himself, took on flesh, and was born of a woman in Bethlehem. Jesus' beginning however was not in Bethlehem as He has no beginning for, He has aseity which is life in Himself as He is eternal. The place He was born in the flesh is of significance as Bethlehem means “house of bread.” At the Last Supper Jesus took bread (unleavened bread-represents without sin as Jesus was sinless) and broke it and after giving blessing it said, “this is My body which is given for you” and this was fulfilled on the cross. It is out of the “house of bread” that the Bread of Life had His body broken and His blood shed so that we may have eternal life though Him. All that come to Him have this promise: they will never thirst or hunger and will have eternal life!

The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

The Good Word

Hello and welcome to the Word, bringing you the Good News of Jesus Christ every day from the Redemptorists of the Baltimore Province. I am Fr. Karl Esker from the Basilica of our Lady of Perpetual Help in Brooklyn, NY. Today is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Today's reading is from the holy gospel according to Luke Jesus spoke to the crowds about the kingdom of God, and he healed those who needed to be cured. As the day was drawing to a close, the Twelve approached him and said, “Dismiss the crowd so that they can go to the surrounding villages and farms and find lodging and provisions; for we are in a deserted place here.” He said to them, “Give them some food yourselves.” They replied, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have, unless we ourselves go and buy food for all these people.” Now the men there numbered about five thousand. Then he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty.” They did so and made them all sit down. Then taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing over them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. They all ate and were satisfied. And when the leftover fragments were picked up, they filled twelve wicker baskets. The gospel of the Lord.   Homily The Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ was created to joyfully profess our faith in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. All of today's readings speak of blessing a sacred meal and sharing the bread. In the gospel we just heard, Jesus is attending the crowd that came to him by teaching them and healing their sick. When his apostles advise him that it is time for him to dismiss the crowd, so that they can go find something to eat, he tells them: “Give them some food yourselves.” When they object and say that what they have is too little, Jesus simply takes what they have – five loaves and two fish – looks up to God his Father, says the blessing, breaks the loaves and hands them to the apostles to distribute. All eat and are satisfied and there are even leftovers. Saying a blessing and breaking bread became a ritual for Jesus and his apostles, by which they recognized his saving presence. We see this particularly at the Last Supper, and again after his resurrection, when he appeared to the disciples on the way to Emmaus. In most of his appearances to the disciples after his resurrection, Jesus eats and drinks with them. And Peter tells Cornelius that they who ate and drank with Jesus after he had risen from the dead are now his witnesses before the world. We see this blessing and sharing prefigured in the first reading where Melchizedek blesses God most high for Abraham's success in recovering the people and possessions that marauders had carried away, and places a feast before Abraham and his men symbolized by the bread and wine. What was prefigured in the book of Genesis, Paul makes explicit in his letter to the Corinthians. He recounts the tradition that he had received: how at the Last Supper Jesus had taken bread, given thanks, broken the bread and given it to the disciple saying: “This is my body that is for you;” and had taken the cup saying:  “This cup is the new covenant in my blood.” And after each had commanded: “Do this in remembrance of me.” Jesus' presence to them was as real as it was to the disciples after his resurrection. Still, Paul recounts this article of the community's faith to remind them that something very important was missing from their Eucharists: the sharing. In Paul's day, the community gathered to share a meal before the Eucharist. Each brought what they could to the meal, but the sharing was not happening. Those who had more ate and drank too much, and the poorer ones often went hungry. That was not done in remembrance of the Lord who had attended the crowds that came to him and multiplied the loaves and fishes. We profess our faith that Jesus is truly present in the consecrated bread and wine of the Eucharist, but it is not enough to march through the streets with the monstrance. When we unite ourselves to Jesus in communion, we receive a mission to make him present in the world by attending the needs of others as Jesus did. The economists tell us that due to the effects of war and of climate change, hunger is going to be a very serious problem in our world and our nation. There are groups that are stockpiling food and arming themselves to defend it. Others are increasing their efforts to feed the poor through soup kitchens and food pantries. Our parish has a food pantry, and for the first time we are having difficulty keeping it stocked. It is also more difficult to get volunteers. Jesus told his apostles: “Give them some food yourselves,” so we keep trying. “Do this in remembrance of me.” May God bless you. Fr. Karl E. Esker CSsR Basilica of our Lady of Perpetual Help Brooklyn, NY  11220

Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

Eli Wiesel’s novel Night starkly confronts us with the horrors of the Holocaust. Based on his own experiences in Nazi death camps, Wiesel’s account flips the biblical story of the Exodus. While Moses and the Israelites escaped slavery at the first Passover (Exodus 12), Wiesel tells of the SS arresting Jewish leaders following Passover. Lest we criticize Wiesel and his dark irony, consider that the Bible contains a similar plot twist. On the night of Passover, Jesus, expected to free God’s people from suffering, instead permits Himself to be arrested by those who would kill Him. John ushers us into the holy scene before Jesus’s arrest. “Troubled in spirit” over what awaited Him, at the Last Supper Jesus predicted His betrayal (John 13:21). Then, in an act we can scarcely comprehend, Christ served His betrayer bread. The account reads: “As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night” (v. 30). History’s greatest injustice was underway, yet Jesus declared, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him” (v. 31). In a few hours, the disciples would experience panic, defeat, and dejection. But Jesus saw God’s plan unfolding as it should. When it seems as though the darkness is winning, recall that our Lord faced His dark night and defeated it. He walks with us. It will not always be night.

“After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”” (John 13,21) Isn't it wonderful to go to the home of an outstanding host? We feel secure, valued and refreshed. We want to go back again. This is also how we feel when hosted by Jesus. Fellowshipping at table with him was a life-changing experience. Just have a quick glance through one of the gospels. In what way does taking the Lord's supper help us to remember that Jesus is our host? And what does that mean? In the accounts of the Last Supper Jesus is acting as a host - a radical host. He not only prepares the event, but washes the feet of the disciples, leads the meal, prays, teaches, comforts the fearful and confused, speaks of the future and more. Many of the actions of Jesus teach us about what it means to be a host. But perhaps one aspect of his hosting stands out above all others. And that's connected with the person we might least expect to be there. He had a most surprising guest. I think you know who I mean. Judas, of course. Why invite your betrayer? Surely at this final meal with your best friends, hosting Judas would sour of the atmosphere. And yet, when we consider the ministry of Jesus, the inclusion of Judas is less surprising. All through his ministry years Jesus ate with the 'wrong' people. Women, Gentiles, sinners. Why stop now? Perhaps his most famous saying connected to the last supper was, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” (Luke 22,19 NIV11) What does "do this" mean? Certainly there is something around the taking of bread and wine. But I wonder if he is also alluding to the inclusion of the unworthy. In his excellent book about the Lord's supper, John Mark Hicks writes, "Who sits at the table says something about the community as well as the host." If Jesus welcomed Judas and hosted him, who are we to reject anyone from our table? Whether that table is in our home, or at our church gatherings. If Jesus can host a betrayer, then we can host someone with different values, background or views. We could even host people we don't like! What difference does it make to you knowing that Jesus hosts you alongside Judas, and that he loves you and the betrayer equally? How might that change the way you view other people this week? It is the prayer of our high priest, inseparable from his sacrifice, from his passing over (Passover) to the Father to whom he is wholly "consecrated." - 2750 (in 'The Prayer of the Hour of Jesus') - By entering into the holy name of the Lord Jesus we can accept, from within, the prayer he teaches us: "Our Father!" His priestly prayer fulfills, from within, the great petitions of the Lord's Prayer: concern for the Father's name; passionate zeal for his kingdom (Glory); The accomplishment of the will of the Father, of his plan of salvation; and deliverance from evil. - 2815 (in 'Hallowed be thy name') - his petition embodies all the others. Like the six petitions that follow, it is fulfilled by the prayer of Christ. Prayer to our Father is our prayer, if it is prayed in the name of Jesus. In his priestly prayer, Jesus asks: "Holy Father, protect in your name those whom you have given me" (abbreviated). - 2849 (in 'and lead us not into temptation') - In this petition to our heavenly Father, Christ unites us to his battle and his agony. He urges us to vigilance of the heart in communion with his own. Vigilance is "custody of the heart," and Jesus prayed for us to the Father: "Keep them in your name" (abbreviated). - 2850 (in 'But deliver us from evil') - The last petition to our Father is also included in Jesus' prayer: "I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one." It touches each of us personally, but it is always "we" who pray, in communion with the whole Church, for the deliverance of the whole human family (abbreviated). - 2812 (in 'Hallowed be thy name') - Finally, in Jesus the name of the Holy God is revealed and given to us, in the flesh, as Savior, revealed by what he is, by his word, and by his sacrifice. This is the heart of his priestly prayer: "Holy Father . . . for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be consecrated in truth." Because he "sanctifies" his own name, Jesus reveals to us the name of the Father. At the end of Christ's Passover, the Father gives him the name that is above all names: "Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." - 2466 (in 'Living in the Truth') - he disciple of Jesus continues in his word so as to know "the truth [that] will make you free" and that sanctifies (abbreviated). - 611 (in 'At the Last Supper Jesus anticipated the free offering of his life') - The Eucharist that Christ institutes at that moment will be the memorial of his sacrifice. Jesus includes the apostles in his own offering and bids them perpetuate it. By doing so, the Lord institutes his apostles as priests of the New Covenant: "For their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth." - 858 (in 'The Apostles' Mission') Got a Bible question? (Is.49:1-6;   Ps.71:1-6,15,17;   Jn.13:21-33,36-38)   “I am made glorious in the sight of the Lord, and my God is now my strength!”   The Lord is with His servant, with Israel, with Jesus, the Son of David, the Son of Man, the Son of God: “From my mother's womb you are my strength…  O God, you have taught me from my youth.”  And to this “sharp-edged sword” the Lord had concealed “in the shadow of His arm,” to this “polished arrow” He has hidden in His quiver, God says: “I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”  He who was called from birth, given His name in His mother's womb, prepared before all the ages, now comes to reveal the glory of God. And how is it “the Son of Man [is] glorified and God is glorified in Him”?  We see in our gospel the moment the glorification begins; we see in our gospel the path by which it comes.  At table at the Last Supper Jesus grows “deeply troubled,” for the time of His betrayal has come.  Judas eats the morsel of food dipped in the dish and “immediately after, Satan entered his heart.”  Then, “no sooner had Judas eaten the morsel than he went out,” and, we are told, “It was night.”  And immediately upon Judas' leaving, the Lord proclaims His glorification has begun. Here begins the Passion.  Here begins the first of the three days Jesus will spend in the belly of the earth.  How unlike the days the Servant spent in His mother's womb these days shall be!  And yet it is precisely these days and in this way that what God has prepared for Him and for all creation shall come to its fulfillment.  Now shall the arrow be sharpened fully and shot forth to pierce all men's hearts with truth – even as the nails pierce His hands and the sword His side.  Through the depths of such absolute darkness, light shall shine forth, and this light shall in time reach to the ends of the world. Now the time has come.  Now all shall abandon Him.  Now by the Suffering Servant shall all be saved. ******* O LORD, make us glorious in your sight, even as your Son has been glorified by His sacrifice.  YHWH, now the darkness falls upon your Son and He is prepared to be glorified.  In the death He must endure He will be revealed as the light of the world.  Though we cannot follow Him now, let us soon follow where He leads.  Help us, dear God, to lay down our lives with Him that we might come to Heaven. He has been hidden for all ages, concealed in the shadow of your arm, LORD; but now this arrow is shot forth, this sword unveiled for all eyes to see.  Now is the time for all to be justified by His holy sacrifice.  O let us join with Him!  Let us not fear the darkness which sets upon this corrupted earth but suffer its betrayal with the patience of the Son of Man. In Him let us take our refuge, LORD; let us be one with your Servant.  To this world help us bring His light, you who have been our trust from our Mother's womb.

The CCC suggests 4 reasons why we need Jesus 457    God became man in Jesus to save us by reconciling us with God. We have all sinned. Romans 6 tells us the consequences of sin is death. Death doesn't just mean the end of our earthly life. Death as the consequence from unrepented sin means eternal separation from God, but also separation from one another and the complete loss of happiness… Imagine being locked in solitary confinement, completely alone – forever, with no hope that the pain would end. That is Hell That is what Jesus came to save us from Why can't God just forgive and forget the consequences? B/C God made us free like Himself and with Freedom comes Consequences. Good choices bear good consequences, Bad choices bear bad consequences. If we want him to remove the consequences, Then He would have to remove our freedom We would not be human Imagine Playing a game with young child If every time the child made a wrong move you let him take it back, Then the child was not really playing the game, was he? For God to excuse every bad move I make, He would have to take away my freedom. Rather than destroy our human dignity; God became one of us. He suffered the consequences for us; He suffered our death And rose from the dead. Since Jesus is both God and Man, He could bear the consequences as Man, He could rise from the dead b/c He is God. By His death Jesus fulfilled the consequence of our sin. By His Resurrection He conquered death  2nd Reason we need Jesus… 458    The Word became flesh so that we might know God's love How do we know God's love? He died for us  At the Last Supper Jesus tells his disciples,  “Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends…” Then He suffered and died for us We should Read the accounts of Jesus' suffering and death in the Gospel  There you will see for yourself: the outstretched arms of Jesus on the Cross,  the arms of the God who proved his love for us  by dying for you and me this is the Revelation of God's love 3rd Reason we need Jesus 459    The Word became flesh to be our model of holiness Jesus reveals what God is really like;  He also reveals what we should be like Because Jesus was fully human He shows us how to be Fully Human Fully Alive He teaches us how to live  by the way He lived He teaches us how to pray By the way He prayed  He teaches us to live Mercy Through his own example of Mercy He teaches us how to fight Temptation  To be calm in the storms of life To have courage under persecution To deal with rejection, privation and want To be patient in suffering and death A wonderful old Benedictine monk, Fr. Adrian,  when we would be in the sacrament of Reconciliation he would turn to a small statue of Jesus and say to me   How would Jesus handle these situations? Michael you must live like the Master Read and think about the life of Jesus in the Gospel For we must learn to live like the Master 4th Reason we need Jesus… 460    The Word became flesh to make us partakers of the divine nature. For this is why the Word became Man, and the Son of God became the Son of man: so that man, by entering into communion with the Word and thus receiving divine sonship, might become a son of God. For the Son of God became man so that we might become God. The only-begotten Son of God, wanting to make us sharers in his divinity, assumed our nature, so that he made man, might make men Gods. The whole point of life is to be Reunited to God Sin had separated us from Him  The distance between us was impossible to bridge Imagine Two Shores separated by a body of water no one could swim You would need a bridge to cross over We need a bridge from God to man Where are God and man joined together? In the Body of Christ That is why Jesus gives us the Eucharist! The Body of Christ is the bridge to cross over to God (John 6:54)

Wisdom-Trek / Creating a Legacy Welcome to Day 1146 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. Welcome to Wisdom-Trek where our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend, I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your captain on our journey to increase wisdom and create a living legacy. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. This is https://wisdom-trek.com/day-1146/ (Day 1146) of our trek, and it is Worldview Wednesday. Creating a Biblical worldview is important to have a proper perspective on today's current events. To establish a Biblical worldview, it is required that you also have a proper understanding of God and His Word. On our Worldview Wednesday episodes we are in a series in which we are covering another detailed review of a book from one of today's most prominent Hebrew scholars Dr. Micheal S. Heiser. We are taking a deep dive and will share Dr. Heiser’s insights into the question, which is also the title of his book “What Does God Want?” God Became Human – Fixing More Than The Fall On previous weeks, we learned that the only way which God could rescue us from our fallen state and keep the covenants that He made with Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David was to become a human and join His human family on earth. Because God became a man in Jesus, he could die. That was important because death could only be defeated by resurrection. You can’t have resurrection without a prior death. Since Jesus was also God, he had the power to bring himself back to life in https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+10%3A17-18&version=NLT (John 10:17-18), “The Father loves me because I sacrifice my life so I may take it back again.  No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what my Father has commanded.” Since the death of Jesus was God’s plan, God knew from before the foundation of the world that he would raise Jesus from the dead (Acts [2:23]-24, 32; [3:15]; [10:40]; Galatians 1:1). Because of the resurrection, our distance from God was bridged. Death was overcome. Those were the effects of the rebellion in Eden. The Adam and Eve problems, caused by the temptation of the serpent (Satan), were solved. Everyone who believes that Jesus’ death and resurrection provided forgiveness of sin and everlasting life will be in God’s family forever (Romans [4:16]-25; [8:10]-11; 10:9-10; 1 Corinthians [6:14]). Once Jesus rose from the dead, he had to return (“ascend”) to heaven. Jesus ascended to heaven and took his throne next to God the Father (Mark [16:19]; John [20:17]; Colossians 3:1; Hebrews 12:2). This was a precursor to sending the Holy Spirit, who would indwell believers (Acts [2:33]; Romans 8:9- 11). Jesus had to leave so the Spirit could come (John [14:25]-26; [15:26]; 16:7; Luke [24:49]). The coming of the Spirit was the fulfillment of the new covenant described by Jeremiah and Ezekiel (Jeremiah [31:31]-34; Ezekiel [36:22]-28). It would be the Spirit who would provide victory over depravity (Galatians [5:16]-17), and whose works would be “greater” than Jesus’s own (John [14:12]). Jesus knew his death and resurrection were key to the new covenant coming to pass. This is why at the Last Supper Jesus told the disciples that his blood was “the blood of the covenant” poured out for them (Matthew [26:28]; Mark [14:24]; Luke [22:20]). Once Jesus ascended back to heaven, and the Spirit descended to earth, humanity was not helpless against depravity. The bottom line is that for God to clean up the problems with...
