Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones (/nɑːˈsɪər/; born September 14, 1973), known professionally as Nas (/nɑːz/), is an American rapper and entrepreneur. Rooted in East Coast hip hop, he is regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time.[2][3][4] The son of jazz musician Olu Dara, Nas began his musical career in 1989 under the moniker "Nasty Nas", and recorded demos under the wing of fellow East Coast rapper Large Professor. Nas made his recording debut on Professor's group, Main Source's 1991 song "Live at the Barbeque". Nas's debut album, Illmatic (1994) is considered to be one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time;[5][6] in 2021, the album was inducted into the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry.[7] His second album, It Was Written (1996) debuted atop the Billboard 200 and sold over a quarter-million units in its first week; the album, along with its single "If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)" (featuring Lauryn Hill), propelled Nas into mainstream success.[8] Both released in 1999, Nas's third and fourth albums I Am and Nastradamus were criticized as inconsistent and too commercially oriented, with critics and audiences fearing a decline in the quality of his output. From 2001 to 2005, Nas was involved in a highly publicized feud with Jay-Z, popularized by the diss track "Ether". The feud, along with Nas's subsequent releases Stillmatic (2001), God's Son (2002), and the double album Street's Disciple (2004) helped him restore his critical standing. Nas then reconciled with Jay-Z prior to signing with his then-spearheaded label, Def Jam Recordings in 2006; he adopted a more provocative, politicized direction with the albums Hip Hop Is Dead (2006) and his untitled ninth studio album (2008). In 2010, Nas released Distant Relatives, a collaborative album with Damian Marley that donated its royalties to active African charities. His tenth studio album, Life Is Good (2012) was nominated for Best Rap Album at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards. After thirteen nominations, his thirteenth studio album, King's Disease (2020) won his first Grammy for Best Rap Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. His five subsequent albums—King's Disease II, Magic (2021), King's Disease III (2022), Magic 2, and Magic 3 (2023)—each received positive reception and were produced entirely by producer Hit-Boy. Nas has been second ranked by The Source on their "Top 50 Lyricists of All Time" list in 2012, fourth on MTV's Annual Hottest MCs in the Game list in 2013, and was named the "Greatest MC of All Time" by About.com in 2014. The following year, Nas was featured on the "10 Best Rappers of All Time" list by Billboard. Outside of recording, he serves as associate publisher of Mass Appeal magazine, and co-founded its spin-off division Mass Appeal Records, a record label which has signed artists including Dave East, N.O.R.E., Run the Jewels, and Swizz Beatz, among others.[9] Nas has released seventeen studio albums since 1994, ten of which are certified gold, platinum or multi-platinum in the U.S. PICTURE: By All-Pro Reels - https://www.flickr.com/photos/joeglo/52380600682/, CC BY-SA 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=123357625

Ed shares his first-hand account of the events leading up to, during, and following the devastating fire on June 14, 2017, that claimed 72 lives and destroyed 127 homes in West London.Key TakeawaysForewarning and Neglect:Ed details the persistent warnings issued by the residents about the tower's safety issues, which were systematically ignored by the management and local authorities. These included concerns over faulty fire doors, sprinklers, and the dangerous cladding that ultimately exacerbated the fire. The Night of the Fire:The tragedy unfolded dramatically and swiftly, leaving residents with little time to react despite previously being instructed to stay put in their apartments during a fire—a policy that proved fatal given the rapid spread of smoke and flames.Aftermath and Abandonment:In the wake of the fire, survivors found themselves neglected by official aid, with the community stepping in to provide immediate relief. Ed's narrative highlights the stark abandonment by the state and the resilience of the Grenfell community.Ongoing Injustice:Years after the incident, the lack of accountability remains a significant issue, with no criminal prosecutions and ongoing delays in legal proceedings that add to the survivors' and victims' families' grief and frustration.Community Mobilisation:The formation of Grenfell United by survivors and bereaved families illustrates the proactive steps taken by the community to seek justice, improve housing safety regulations, and ensure such a disaster never happens again.Societal Reflections:The episode reflects on broader themes of social inequality, the disregard for lower-income communities, and systemic failures that contributed to the tragedy. Ed discusses the implications of profit over safety and the need for profound systemic change. This episode serves not only as a remembrance but also as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles for justice and systemic reform. This week, Gillian chats with Professor Tim Lenton, a seasoned expert in Earth System Science from the University of Exeter to find out. We dive into the profound connections between our planet's systems and the Gaia hypothesis; exploring how the conditions of life on earth are maintained by self-regulating systems in the ocean, atmosphere, rock and by life itself.Key Takeaways:Understanding Earth System Science:Earth System Science views our planet as a cohesive unit, focusing on the thin, life-supporting layer from the top of the atmosphere to the crust. This perspective emphasises the interconnectedness and interdependence of all planetary components.Gaia Theory Revisited:Gaia theory conceptualises Earth as a self-regulating, complex system, akin to a living entity but not an organism. It maintains its stability through feedback mechanisms, despite lacking the robust material exchanges characteristic of organisms.Climate Tipping Points:The discussion highlights critical tipping points in the climate system, such as the melting of ice caps and permafrost, which could dramatically alter global climate patterns and sea levels.Positive Tipping Points:Positive developments in renewable energy technologies, such as solar and wind power, are becoming self-sustaining through economies of scale and could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.Societal and Behavioural Changes:Emphasising the need for a shift in societal behaviours and norms, particularly in energy consumption and diet (reducing meat consumption), which are crucial for achieving sustainable environmental outcomes.Global Gaia Happiness IndexA new measure of success. The latest episode features Alyson Williams discussing her illustrious recording career, upcoming projects, women rappers, and much more. In the late 80s, the Harlem singer became the first female R&B artist signed to the groundbreaking Def Jam rap label. Alyson’s first album, "Raw," garnered several top 5 singles, including slow jam favorite “Just Call My Name.” The album went on to spend over a year on the Billboard charts, met only by Madonna’s “Like a Prayer.” After leaving Def Jam, the daughter of trumpeter and bandleader Bobby Booker, moved to Columbia records (now Sony) and released her second album. The self-titled release nabbed two top ten hits – “Just My Luck” and “Can’t Have My Man.”Alyson would go on to release two more albums – in 2004 and 2010.Before success as a solo artist, she sang background for hitmakers including Melba Moore, Evelyn Champagne King, and Kurtis Blow. Yep, that was Alyson singing the hook on classic Kurtis Blow rap tracks – "Basketball" and "If I Ruled the World." In addition to a recording career, Alyson enjoyed acting and singing in musical reviews and stage plays both on and off Broadway in shows including “One Mo Time” and the “25th Anniversary Revival of the Wiz." She worked with actors/and singers Lynn Whitfield, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Carl Payne, The Whispers, and Eddie Levert of The O'Jays. Currently, Alyson has a lot on her plate – working on a new jazz album, an upcoming virtual show honoring her friend and gone-too-soon singer Phyliss Hyman (click here for ticket information), and a radio show on WHCR in New York. Alternatively, you can make yourself a mojito and check out Bobby's wicked Reggae Source mixtape that he recorded for Spannered in 2007.   Everybody in the house say hell yeah!   Tracklisting (roughly speaking...): Boogie Down Productions – The Bridge Is Over Boogie Down Productions – P Is Free Ten Thieves – It Don’t Matter Quasimoto – Bad Character East Flatbush Project – Tried By Twelve Beatnuts – Sandwiches Levi 167 – Something Fresh to Swing To Mic Geronimo – The Natural Doug E Fresh – Play This Only At Night Royal Flush – Worldwide Big Shug – Crush DITC – The Enemy Public Enemy – Shut ‘Em Down Ultimate Force – I’m Not Playin’ Boogie Down Productions – Dope Beat Saukrates – Father Time LL Cool J – The Breakthrough Gang Starr – You Know My Steez Common – Nuttin’ to Do Jeru – The Bullshit MC Shan – Project Ho Ultramagnetic MCs – One Two, One Two MC Mitchski – Brooklyn Blew Up The Bridge Goodie Mob – Cell Therapy Just Ice – Latoya Just Ice – Going Way Back Eric B & Rakim – My Melody LL Cool J – I Need A Beat Just Ice – Put That Record Back On Craig Mack – Flava In Ya Ear Rammelzee & K Rob – Beat Bop Notorious BIG – Big Poppa Audio Two – Top Billin’ Chill Rob G – Future Shock Big L – MVP Masta Ace – Born To Roll Fat Joe – Shit Is Real Gang Starr – DJ Premier In Deep Concentration Marley Marl – He Cuts So Fresh Dr Dre – Keep Their Heads Ringinh Group Home – Supastar Boogie Down Productions – Criminal Minded Krown Rulers – B Boy Document Showbiz & AG – Next Level Notorious BIG – Unbelievable King Tee – Payback’s A Mutha Group Home – Livin’ Proof MC Shan – Beat Biter Ol’ Dirty Bastard – Brooklyn Zoo (remix) Alliance – We Can Get Used To This Paula Perry – Paula’s Jam Cool C – Mary Go Round Kings of Pressure – You Know How To Reach Us Jeru – Come Clean Junior Mafia – Player’s Anthem Nas – One Love Heltah Skeltah – Operation Lockdown Fuschnickens – Ring the Alarm Heltah Skeltah – Operation Lockdown Kirk – Feel the Boom Blahzay Blahzay – Danger Krumbsnatcha – Closer to God De La Soul – Bizness Real Live – Real Live Shit DITC – One Day Rasco – The Unassisted Busta Rhymes – Woo Ha Common – Doinit Pharcyde – Drop A Tribe Called Quest – Find a Way Pharcyde – Bullshit Common – I Used to Love H.E.R Quasimoto – Discipline 99 pt.1 Common – Resurrection Nas – Halftime Das EFX – Microphone Checka Grand Puba – I Like It Bas Blasta – Dangerous LL Cool J – Dangerous Kurious – Walk Like a Duck Big Daddy Kane – Smooth Operator Beatnuts – Props Over Here (Remix) KRS One – Rappaz R N Danja A Tribe Called Quest – Bonita Applebum Slick Rick – It’s a Boy (Remix) Apache – Gangsta Bitch Young MC – Got More Rhymes Reflection Eternal – Fortified Live Raekwon – Ice Cream Gza – Shadowboxin’ KRS One – MCs Act Like They Don’t Know Craig Mack – Get Down (remix) Casual – That’s How It Is Jeru – D’Original Peanut Butter Wolf & Charizma – My World Premiere World Reknown – Come Take a Ride Bush Babeez – Remember Me Lord Finesse – Funky Technician AWOL – Bring It Up De La Soul – Potholes in my Lawn Gang Starr – Blowin’ Up the Spot Medina Green – Crosstown Beef Jungle Brothers – Jimbowski Das EFX – Kaught in Da Ak Quasimoto – Put a Curse On You Beatnuts – No Equal Lenchmob – Lenchmob Also In The Group King Tee – Played Like a Piano Little Shawn – I Made Love Lady of Rage – Afro Puffs MC Lyte – Cappucino The Nonce – Mixtapes Pharoah Monch – Simon Says KRS One – Sound Of Da Police Cool C – Juice Crew Dis Lord Finesse – You Know What I’m About KRS One – Outta Here Latee – No Tricks Dr Dre – 187 Strickly Roots – Beg No Friends Gang Starr – Step In The Arena Boogie Down Productions – Super Hoe Boogie Down Productions – Poetry Mad Skillz – Nod Factor Nonce – Eighty Five Boogie Down Productions – My Philosophy A Tribe Called Quest – Against The World A Tribe Called Quest – 1nce Again Lyricist Lounge Allstars – CIA Cyclops 400 – Macro Scope Bucksot Lefonque – Music Evolution Big Lady K – Don’t Get Me Started Lord Finesse – Funky Technician Ed OG & Da Bulldogs – I Gotta Have It Kenny Dope – Supa Crooklyn Dodgers – Return Of The Crooklyn Dodgers A Tribe Called Quest – Check The Rhime Gang Starr – The ?
