Melissa Forman talks about more one in a million sotries.
Originally posted on big think for full article https://bigthink.com/sponsored/why-is-it-taboo-to-talk-about-money/#:~:text=Understanding%20the%20money%20taboo&text=Middle%2Dclass%20Americans%20also%20prefer,to%20be%20perceived%20as%20desperate. From weekly episodes of Keeping up with the Kardashians to the outrageously expensive costumes and jewelry displayed at the MET Gala, mainstream media is full of reminders that our culture mostly revolves around money and consumerism. But while we are taught from a young age that one of our primary goals in life is to amass as much wealth as possible, talking about our own income with other people is considered inappropriate. Before we discuss how this blatant contradiction came into being, it's important to recognize that the so-called "money taboo" is a bit more nuanced than we tend to give it credit for. As Joe Pinsker wrote in The Atlantic, it's okay to ask somebody how much they spent on lunch, but not how much they set aside for their retirement. Both timeliness and size, it appears, help determine whether the purchase in question is suitable for conversation. It doesn't matter if that conversation takes place publicly or privately. A 2018 survey from Fidelity Investment Company found that in as many as 34% of cohabiting couples, one or both partners fail to accurately identify how much the other makes. Similarly, just 17% of parents with an income of $100,000 or higher tell their children how much money they have. Generally speaking, people feel more comfortable talking about extramarital affairs, addiction, and sex than money. Understanding the money taboo Such discomfort can have different causes. “Many Americans,” continues Pinsker, “do have trouble talking about money – but not all of them, not in all situations, and not for the same reasons. In this sense, the ‘money taboo’ is not one taboo but several, each tailored to a different social context.” When researching her book Uneasy Street: The Anxieties of Affluence, Rachel Sherman learned New York City's ultrarich keep their income to themselves because they're afraid of being perceived as privileged or corrupt. Middle-class Americans also prefer to remain silent. Not because they're ashamed of their modest wealth – quite the contrary – but because they don't want to be perceived as desperate. As anthropologist Caitlin Zaloom writes in Indebted: How Families Make College Work at Any Cost, “protecting middle-class identity [means] silence about money” since “silence protects the idea that a middle-class family is independent and will be into the future , even if that's not the case.” Evolutionary explanations for the money taboo dig a little deeper. Back when our ancestors lived in tribal communities, our survival depended on our ability to work together. In this kind of environment, the last thing you wanted was to stand out from the crowd. Millenia later, neuroscientist Dr. Moran Cerf says in our interview, created in partnership with Million Stories, our brains still think this way. This explains why income – an “easy tool to quantify people’s position in a system” – is considered taboo. Watch our full interview on money taboos: Historical explanations are equally compelling. As political science professor Jeffrey Winters told Pinsker, societies with large wealth disparities are “inherently unstable.” Not only do they have to defend themselves from outside enemies, but they also must prevent infighting between the haves and the have-nots. In this context, taboos that prevent socioeconomic classes from openly discussing their variable incomes would have the added benefit of maintaining peace and stability.

Patreon.com/thequestionshiphop ORDER THE QUESTIONS HIP-HOP TRIVIA GAME Original Broadcast: November 18, 2020 Blueprint is someone who knows a thing or two about multitasking. The producer/emcee played a pivotal role in the emerging underground scene in the Midwest during the late 90's/early '00s, with his own Weightless crew and also amongst the artists that would eventually comprise the rosters of indie juggernauts Rhymesayers and Definitive Jux. He's continued to put out a steady clip of music since then (both as a solo artist as well as one half of Soul Position with RJD2), but music isn't where his journey ends. He's become a film/video director, a published author with four books under his belt, and the host of his own 'Super Duty Tough Work' podcast. But no matter what the medium, he's essentially a storyteller, and so it was great to hear the stories behind these seven randomly selected songs from his catalog: "The Jerry Springer Episode" (Soul Position '8 Million Stories', 2003) "Alchemy" (Aesop Rock, 'Daylight', 2002) "The American Dream" ('Deleted Scenes,' 2012) "Great Eyedeas Never Die" ('King No Crown,' 2015) "Fresh" ('1988', 2005) "Arms Too Short" ('Chamber Music', 2004) "Overdosin'" ('Respect the Architect,' 2014) Lots of great conversation here, too: reflecting about the rise of the scene he helped build, the forces that caused that machine to slow down years later, his approach to songwriting and recording, and so much more. For almost two centuries, women were not allowed to join the U.S. Military – yet millions served. Now with almost 20% of the military being female, the Military Women's Memorial is celebrating the three million women who have served the Nation in both peace and war -- since before the founding of the Republic. Host COL (Ret.) Dan Roper sits down with CW5 (Ret.) If you planned for late summer or early fall travel at the beginning of the year (or heck, even the beginning of summer), your budget now looks ugly. In this episode of 21, we talk with Marvin Pierre, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Eight Million Stories (8MS). The mission of 8MS is to transform the lives of vulnerable youth (12–21-year-old) through education, skills training, employment, and authentic relationships. Marvin and his team work to bring hope, vision, and practical work/life skills to young people who feel disenfranchised, disconnected, and/or in despair. The work of 8MS is aimed at eradicating the school-to-prison pipeline by creating alternate success pathways for students who are not succeeding in traditional learning settings...breathing new life into the concept of ‘no child left behind.' Marvin attended Trinity College in Connecticut, and later, the University of Houston. He started his career in investment banking, but later heeded his life's calling to work with young people in a way that is truly meaningful. Listen as Marvin describes his path towards fulfilling his purpose, the role that his mentors and sponsors played along the way, and how a song from a famous hip hop group impacted the name of his nonprofit. (Reminders of the power of networking, betting on yourself, and grasping moments of inspiration!) And while work is a priority for Marvin (he refers to his students as ‘his kids'), he also has other neat things going for him outside of work. After hearing this episode, we will hope that you will be inspired to learn more about 8MS at www.eightmillionstories.org, and endeavor to make a difference in young person's life, that may very well hang in the balance. You get a nearly two-hour YouTube special that we're going to replay for you right here! The STACK event features the co-author of the classic financial philosophy book Your Money Or Your Life, Vicki Robin, who will talk about her journey learning for herself why finding a different path to financial security was important. We also feature a guy who's story has resonated with many (especially lately after a feature video in the Million Stories series was released), Michael Santos. Michael found himself incarcerated at a young age but not only turned around his own life, he also is passionate and focused on helping others going through trouble turn their lives around. Finally, and kicking off our show, we'll introduce you to Dan Chan, a man who's not only entertained billionaires, but a guy who's had to pivot with his business since COVID-19. How did he go from working at PayPal to chasing his dream? He'll share his journey today! If you'd like to join us for the live, unedited event, where you can ask questions, hang out with other Stackers, and possibly take home one of our participant prizes, sign up for our newsletter, The Stacker, at http://stackingbenjamins.com/stacker. How do you make the topic of money actually fun? That's the question the Singleton Foundation asked, and CEO Shelly Miles and Executive Producer Lisa Freberg join us today to explain how they pulled it off. They not only found talented creators to bring together a video channel that resembles Netflix for money nerds, but they also thought deeply about exactly how to turn each story into a longer discussion. Today we'll talk about how they've made money discussions compelling, fun, and best of all, habit-changing. Big news happened recently in mutual fund land. Vanguard is throwing in the towel on one of its products. Plus, as they attempt to tread water, colleges have turned to mass layoffs. What does that mean for the college experience? We'll share our thoughts. And in today's Haven Life Line call, Seth has some business debt to pay off. He'd expected to make enough money on the side to pay it off but that hasn't happened. So instead, he plans to use his W2 income to wipe it out. Should he approach it like regular debt and pay off the highest interest loans first? ...and of course, we'll save time for some of Doug's "working like a dog" trivia. Enjoy!

Joseph and Gloria La Morte are a special husband-and-wife creative duo. They’ve etched a place for themselves in the creative economy. Combined, Joseph and Gloria have produced films, documentaries, web series, public service announcements, special segments, edited features, written screenplays, and acted; and are parents to Emile. Good people. For years they’ve been part of my artistic and professional compass. How do they/we do it? When and how does the creative life begin? Make something out of it. And that they have. Joseph says something really true here towards the end. I’m paraphrasing, but it’s something like, yes we have to pay the mortgage, but we find ways to feel at peace with how we earn our money. The crux of the hunt. And it lives with the actions of us/them, the creative work. In their case, Details, Crush, Entre Nos, Free Like the Birds, Get Some, 11 Million Stories, and much more. See JoeynGloria.com. Their son Emile will know all about producing and filmmaking for sure. I tried editing down to 30 minutes but it was almost impossible because of course, thoughts come in story form as told by creative workers. Also, the sound is not ideal, but I worked it and am proud of the editing to bring balance to the three voices. The talk stands because this conversation is really about making the quotidian matter. #joeyngloria #filmmakers #latino #content #creators #producers #husbandandwife #getsome #11millionstories #colombia #newjersey

Let's be honest - if you brought four CDs with you on a deserted island, you'd probably use them for anything other than listening to music. You could sharpen the edges and use them as weapons to hunt birds or fish. Or shine them to reflect sunlight in hopes of catching the eye of a nearby boat or plane. Really, there are tons of uses for these things. But, the trope is there for a reason. Music helps us to remember great things in our lives, or get us through tough periods. And being stuck on a deserted island is probably up there in terms of "tough periods". Michael, Richard and Jeff talk about the albums that shaped their lives and they would want to listen to again and again. So gather around the fire you've started using flint, rocks and seaweed and get ready to listen.
