Feeling stuck is a condition often rooted in fear, “inertia,” and a lack of support. Host Dr. Lara Salyer explores the concept of inertia, its complexities, and how it can hinder progress in various aspects of life, especially in healthcare. Drawing from personal experiences, Dr. Lara will guide you on how to overcome inertia using a method she calls “W.A.R.M.”   The W.A.R.M. method—”Who Dis,” “Aim Low,” “Reason Why,” and “Messy Moves the Needle”—offers a new perspective on overcoming the inertia that often afflicts individuals. Through sharing personal stories from her life and her mentoring sessions, Dr. Lara demonstrates the relatability and applicability of the W.A.R.M. method. She recounts a moment of self-doubt while preparing for a workshop and how applying the method helped her move past the hurdle, serving as a testament to the method's effectiveness.   This episode of The Catalyst is a call to embrace self-reflection, set realistic goals, and accept that imperfect action is still progress. It encourages listeners to confront their fears, seek support, and concentrate on the underlying reasons for their aspirations.   Quotes • "You need action to make motivation happen." (08:32 | Dr. Lara Salyer)  • "Negative self-talk, fear of judgment, and plain old procrastination. Those are the top three most likely self-sabotaging mechanisms that I see in my practice. And this is detrimental because the more we practice those thought loops of self-sabotage, it really breaks down our mental health. It also breaks down our well-being and our feeling of self-efficacy. We start to feel more trapped." (11:59 | Dr. Lara Salyer) • "When you find yourself stuck, first of all, you have to recognize that, which can be hard. And that's why a good mentor or a good practitioner that helps you with lifestyle changes, you need a third party to look at your life and assess." (15:51 | Dr. Lara Salyer)  • "Take imperfect action. Just move, just get off the couch, stumble to the kitchen, whatever it is, put your shoes on, left shoe on the right foot does not mean take imperfect action, recognize that your progress comes from just moving in a messy way. Nothing says that you have to be perfect right outside the gate or ever." (19:54 | Dr. Lara Salyer) • "Next time you're feeling inertia, remember, W.A.R.M. Warm yourself up. Take it off the couch. Ask, who's this? Aim low. Reason why. And messy moves the needle. Challenge those thoughts. Remember that motivation doesn't come from inaction. It's so much more comfortable to blame or point fingers or sit on the couch and consume, get another certification, another degree, or consume TikTok or social media and just sort of dissociate from life. Jump back in it. Get warm. Remind yourself of the why." #139: Walking Every Day, Pastor With Cancer Has Advice on New Year's Goals

Run The Race

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 29, 2022 48:09

Happy 2023...almost! We are celebrating the end of 2022 with inspiring stories from a pastor I know in NC who walks daily (25,000 miles in the last 7 1/2 years) and was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, given 5 months to live. He has wisdom about faith journeys and motivational advice to help you get out of bed to do something for God and for others! And make sure to Subscribe to the "Run The Race" podcast as we head into the New Year. (3:10) Jim Pearce, who just turned 66 years old, has walked 9 miles a day for more than 7 years now! It was kind of like Forrest Gump. He says God called him to do it, and the daily routine is the first battle of the day - "flipping the covers." The pastor calls it his drug of choice, and opportunities to draw closer to God while walking. (7:50) There are also fitness and health benefits. How can you stick with goals like this that you make for the New Year? Jim says Aim Low. He explains. (10:55) At the beginning of this year, Jim was diagnosed with non-smokers lung cancer, which is normally terminal. The doctors told him he had less than half a year to live, but he's in the 5% that has a rare mutation that medicines can treat. (17:01) Knowing time may be short, he has a more directed purpose and focus in life...to finish well. And he lives by a famous line in the movie The Shawshank Redemption: "Get busy living or get busy dying." He looks at a t-shirt with those words every day, as a reminder. After being a teen troublemaker into drugs and alcohol, (21:09) Jim Pearce came to Christ at age 16. He talks about the pivotal moment: an invite to a Christian concert, because he liked loud music and girls. Eventually, he went to seminary. Since then, he's led overseas missions trips to 40 different countries in the last 40 years! That included being a young man scared and smuggling Bibles behind the Iron Curtain before the Wall came down. Doing so much in the world has taught him...our faith is more alive when we are looking for it. He has advice on how to listen and watch for "God sightings," the supernatural happening among us. He describes it as "tuning your heart" with "spiritual antennas." For the last 24 years, he's been the pastor of visitation at Grace Community Church in the Hendersonville, NC area. (31:03) How does he care for people in crisis, especially men who are struggling and don't want people to get too close? Men also bond over sports, and Jim was a runner for 20 years, doing so all over the world like Iceland and Fiji. He agrees there are many faith and fitness parallels. (38:03) The cancer wakeup call has helped Jim Pearce try to live life to the fullest, reminding us that everyone has a role, no matter how small you think it is. You can do something important for God, who is not mad at you. We end with a quick chat about lessons from the holiday movie It's a Wonderful Live and (44:40) Jim's closing prayer. Are you aiming high, but feeling like you're hitting a brick wall? Neena Perez has some advice for you: aim low to gain much.In this video, Neena Perez shares her tips for achieving success by aiming low. From setting achievable goals to breaking them down into manageable chunks, Neena will help you to move forward by taking things one step at a time.If you're feeling discouraged about your progress, watch this video and learn how to achieve success by aiming low. You'll be surprised at how much you can achieve by taking a conservative approach!Aim low to gain much. I just want you to aim, that doesn't mean you will not aim up, that doesn't mean you will not have something to strive for. Do it a tiny bit at a time and don't do it perfectly, the truth is that in order for you to do much of anything you need to start small. "Compare yourself today to who you were yesterday. Not to who someone else is today." – Jordan Peterson. You should be in competition with you. Competing to being the best version of you today. See you are the worthy opponent because you know what you have been through and what you have overcome, so, you know when you have done better and where you can improve. You can't compare yourself to someone else because that's not an accurate measure. Truth is you probably don't have everything you need right now to see success and you probably suck at what you're aiming for right now. and that is ok. When you start anything is life that is the beginning of a journey towards your goal you will be awful at it and you will struggle and that is so good because you will be humbled and it will teach you that nothing is done overnight, it takes focus, determination, discipline, and an outlook that gives you strategy. ___________________________________________Join the host of @straighttalknosugaradded LIVE Monday at 11 am ET / 8 am PT on @WINJECTTV Please LIKE

How should we approach our first race back? We suggest looking at it like a controlled scrimmage or dress rehearsal. In other words, a spring board to a great season. If you watched Challenge Miami you probably saw that even the Pro triathletes were a bit rusty. As races come into view it may be time to step back and recalibrate your approach. That doesn’t mean you have to be slower, but your early races after a long time off should probably be setting you up for something later. It’s back! The At The Flicks team return to review whatever films we can find. Yes after two months off, during which time we looked at the best of 2020 (there’s an oxymoron) and presented our official awards show, we are back talking movies. Unfortunately, not the best new movie selection we could have picked. Jeff complains about the majority of them. Nothing new there you might think, however on this show Darren and Graham try to outdo him in that department. What could have sparked such an outcry? Surely not Pixar’s latest, Soul, about the afterlife, or Mank, a black and white feature about the Golden Age of Hollywood? Was it perhaps another black and white feature, Malcolm & Marie, (for Neil it has to be colour or nothing)? Maybe it was the British farce Blithe Spirit (Jeff goes on and on about his views on British farce) or the quirky comedy western Damsel (It gave Graham saddle sores). Even Phil, our most mild mannered of reviewers starts to lose it with a couple of them (the films that is, not the At The Flicks team). Thankfully we have a great Darren’s Dash to rescue us. This works especially well for Graham as it includes something from his movie paladin, Mr Gerard Butler. Continuing with the great news. How well did you do at last month’s quiz? Check in for the answers and also listen out for 4 new questions, three of which can amazingly this month, be answered by the team (did Jeff slip them the answers in advance so as not to embarrass them – you decide). Can you answer the elusive fourth question? Please let us know. Finally we talk briefly to Val over in New Zealand about what cinema life is currently like there at the moment. Prepare to be envious. Just remember that with God’s will and a fair wind that could be us in a couple of month’s time. Until then follow the rules, stay safe and we will all come out of this fit and well. Take care and see you on the next show.

From delegating chores, responsibilities, keeping up with our house, work/life balance (is there such a thing?), mom-guilt, and sex (gasp!), Meagan and I talk about how to keep our emotional tanks full so we can focus on doing what matters.   Meagan Francis is a mother of five and a blogger, writer, and expert at being a happier, more productive mom. Her blog, The Happiest Home, and Book, The Happiest Mom: 10 Secrets to Enjoying Motherhood, help mothers find satisfaction in family and home life while encouraging them to go after their own dreams too.    Meagan's work has appeared in dozens of magazines and websites like Parenting, Parents, Good Housekeeping, The Huffington Post, and Babble.com. This week on the show we have the very lovely, very funny, and very British Sprinkle of Glitter! You know her from YouTube. From Twitter. From Instagram. And, of course, from England. You don't want to miss this one. Louise has some of the most hilariously embarrassing stories I have ever heard. And as a special bonus, you get to hear me attempt an absolutely horrible British accent. My apologies to the Queen. "Aim Low. Ever since Spannered launched, we've been clammoring for Kid Kameleon to put together a mix for the site, and finally it's here. Well, it's half here, in fact: Aim Low is one part of a dual mix release from the Kid — a pair of selections representing 'the weird end of dubstep' while giving plenty of props to up-and-coming artists, he tells us. The other half, Aim High, is hosted by our good friends over at the Mashit site — and while you're there, take plenty of time to check out the spread of mixes and other great stuff on offer.   Big up Inkcore for the cool artwork!   Tracklisting: Boxcutter — Windfall (Planet Mu) Clouds — Shallow (Dub) Blackdown & Dusk — Northside Cheng Dub (Keysound) Flippo — Rain (Dub) Reform — Untitled (Dub) Secret Agent Gel — Banker (Dub) Sky City Rising — Glock Box (Broklyn Beats) Sarantis — Why Dem Fight ft.
