This recording is a sample of multiple recordings made at 14 different spots in Rasala Bazar, Old Anarkali. It is an amalgamation of a constant sound of an electric motor and a continuous chirping of a bird- symbolic of how the existing and growing neglect of historic neighbourhood in affecting the habitats of birds that seek shelters in 'jharokas' of the pre-independence buildings (1947).  Recorded by Sania Ahmad.

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"Old Anarkali has been a bustling market in the city of Lahore for at least 200 years. Owing to its rich history, the market still holds much of the historic architecture at its backside while the front has been modernised, catering to the commercial needs. These buildings are mostly residential and while their material condition is in decay, the intangible environment has a strong 'sense of the past'.  "As an undergraduate architecture student, I visited Old Anarkali in 2019 in search of remnants of the past and found the sonic elements to be the most prominent in the creation of the 'sense of the past'. I recorded at 14 different spots in the neighbourhood and edited them to remove sounds that were not there in the past i.e; motor sounds, traffic noise. This approach left me with sounds of horse trotting, leather shoe steps on gravel pathways, sounds from an old church, pigeons cooing, children playing. Finally I combined the latter sounds into a 40 second audio as a palette that can always potentially create a sonic environment similar to the times gone by. "The resultant audio sounds like a melody, where all the sounds merge together in harmony and transport you to a calmer place. This idea inspired me to create architecture that materialises that calm sense by amplifying low frequency sounds and buffering outside, traffic noise."  Composition by Sania Ahmad.

Welcome to another episode of OTTplay Lost and Found, one podcast that talks about critically acclaimed films and shows but lesser-known. I'm your host Nikhil.Films where a vulnerable person or community is falsely accused of a certain crime or coloured inaccurately often end up as a social commentary, complete with a lot of rona-dhona. But there are those that give it a positive spin by drafting characters who refuse to accept their marginalized position and rise above their circumstances to make their mark. Today's Lost and Found, the 2017 drama Anaarkali of Aarah is surely one such film. With a power-packed cast comprising Swara Bhaskar, Pankaj Tripathi and Sanjay Mishra, this one's a compelling story of injustice set in the hinterland. When a nachnewali played by Bhaskar is violated by a local, we're sensitized to the vulnerable position of dancers who're hired to perform at weddings. Routinely attacked by perpetrators who feel entitled, these heinous acts are often overlooked as these dancers are often demonized by society and even denied their basic human rights. And while the film doesn't attempt to paint them as sheep being sent to the slaughter, it does raise the pertinent issue that their consent is rarely sought by these perpetrators who believe that naachnewalis would invariably also function as sex workers. An area where this film scores has to be the fact that despite the milieu and subject being tackled, it doesn't stray into vulgar territory and even while the situations and circumstances may seem unsettling to some, it doesn't make the audience uncomfortable at any point. What it also manages well is to effectively translate the lead's debilitating state across the screen. And while it doesn't deliberately seek empathy, one can't help but root for her through the film. This has to be Bhaskar's most compelling turns and she slips into her Anarkali like a queen with no regrets, packing her acting chops with a punch and owning the character completely.Surely, a gem that slipped through the cracks. If you havent watched this film yet then do so streaming on Disney + HotstarWell that's the OTTplay Lost and Found for today's episode, until the next podcast it's your host Nikhil signing out.Aaj kya dekhoge OTTplay se poocho

Hey Coconuts, We hope you enjoy our discussion on My Sister's Keeper and some of the ethical questions it raised. We loved this book! It opened doors for people to have conversations on very difficult topics such as parenting, emancipation and the cost of love. One of the conclusions we had was that morals do not necessarily always support ethics. In the case of Anna, it was ethical for her to be an organ donor to Kate, but morally it was wrong as it robbed Anna of a life and childhood. PS. We acknowledge we aren't mothers but we've learnt about different parenting styles from several mediums, to form an educated opinion! LOL. Hey Coconuts! In this installment we talk about WandaVision! We’re both avid fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe! We use references from the movies and comics in our daily lives. Some of the things we really enjoyed that WandaVision did so brilliantly was display the different ways a person can grieve their loss, and how they come to accept their new life, and understand themselves better. Also the writers did a great job writing for vision, some of the statements he made were so profound that it takes more then one watch to appreciate them all. PS. Anarkali our lovely Podcast ghost didn’t make much of an appearance but Meral had a bit of a headache which is why it may sound like she’s got scrambled egg for brains! Also Meral meant to say Regina Mills from Once Upon a Time not Regina George. Also It goes without saying that there are several spoilers! We discuss the Resolution for Pakistan, the things we love about the work some citizens are doing, and our celebrity run ins. Obviously there’s so much more to say about the good that’s being worked towards and a lot to say on the negative aspects too. Even though everything has its pros and cons we’re more focused on the pros today. PS. Even though Anarkali didn’t make an appearance today. Hey coconuts, We're backkk!!! To the lovely people that are still following us THANK YOU! So we decided to start off with something that is very near and dear to us, and that is the epidemic of body shamming, bullying, and perpetuating impossible narratives about what is considered beautiful. Research has shown that the percentage of young boys and girls, getting cosmetic procedures has sky rocketed, so in this episode we discuss the damaging role that social media, TV and movies play, and the lasting effects it can have, in the form of eating disorders and other mental health illnesses. P.S The ghost has not left the building, matter in fact it has gotten louder so we decided to name it.. Anarkali and she can be a total pill sometimes so just bear with her. She's opinionated. The colour green has a strong association with nature and immediately brings to mind the lush green of grass, trees, hills, and forests. Perhaps because green is so heavily associated with nature, it is often described as a refreshing and tranquil color. It is the sanctuary away from the stresses of modern living, restoring us back to a sense of well being. Green, is restful & soothing. It promotes a love of nature, and a love of family, friends, pets and the home. There's a sense of togetherness & peace when we are in presence of the color green. Hence, I have chosen green as the colour of love. And that is my theme for today - LOVE. The songs featured are - Yeh zindagi usi ki hai (Anarkali/1953/C Ramchandra/Rajendra Krishan/Lata Mangeshkar) Jalte hain jiske liye (Sujata/1959/S D Burman/Majrooh Sultanpuri/Talat Mahmood) Teri aankhon ke siva (Chirag/1969/Madan Mohan/Majrooh/Md. Pyar hua iqrar hua (Shri 420/1955/Shankar Jaikishan/Shailendra/Manna De & Lata M.) Ranjit Dahiya is an artist, entrepreneur, motivational speaker and an arts & design professor all rolled into one. Founder artist of BAP, Ranjit Dahiya is originally from a small town named Sonipat in Haryana. He did his Bachelor's Degree in Fine Art from College of Art, Chandigarh and further went on to do his Post Graduate in Graphic Design from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. Today we are here to discuss his love for Bollywood, murals and documenting a case study of BAP, Bollywood Art project. Can you start by telling us what is BAP and some background story behind it? Can share some brief historical background about murals as an art form in India? Which all other Indian cities do have murals or graffiti going on? What according to you is role of mural in society? India has 2 religions. Cricket and Bollywood. You picked Bollywood. The first ever mural made is a poster from a 1953 film Anarkali. What makes you draw stuff which is pre-2000’s? Do you consider drawing anything apart from Bollywood if not commissioned? How different it is to detail out the nuances of the subject being painted when you draw on big walls? You have rough strokes or also show the smaller details? How do you decide the level of detailing you wish to achieve? Can you quickly walk us through the process? What sort of colours are used to keep the painting fresh for some time? With the heat and rains in Mumbai - Have you experimented with colour mixtures to keep those murals long lasting? Mixing acrylic, with emulsion paint or simply oil paints? When you travel across India, especially in highways and country side, You see lot of walls painted with either Tele-com providers or tractors… in a way actual advertising, which seems to be a paid job. From where do you think your motivation comes for painting old Bollywood stuff? Can you take a particular example and tell how do you respond to the surface and how does surface responds to your artwork. For eg: If you are painting a Bollywood heroin, can her eyes be 2 windows which are nicely designed? Do you expect the building owners and keep their windows open or closed all the time based on your artwork? I saw few of your videos online where you draw a rough sketch and then probably a complete artwork on canvas to envision, why can’t or don’t you just draw on huge canvases and hang them? What is the difference in drawing on huge canvas versus actual walls? With Flex and other mediums emerging to promote films and TV series, what is your one hope and one disappointment when you look at these?
