Aaron Alexander & Andrew Gordon react to The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, the 2014 dystopian sci-fi action sequel directed by Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, Constantine) and based on Suzanne Collins' bestselling novel. The film follows Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence – Silver Linings Playbook, X-Men: First Class) as she becomes the reluctant face of the rebellion against the Capitol after the destruction of District 12. Now hidden in the underground stronghold of District 13, Katniss struggles with her role as the Mockingjay while President Coin (Julianne Moore – Still Alice, Magnolia) and Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman – Capote, The Master) work to rally the districts into war. The film features some of the franchise's most memorable and highly searched moments: Katniss's haunting rendition of “The Hanging Tree”, the emotional propaganda “propos,” Peeta's shocking transformation under Capitol manipulation, and the bombing of District 13's underground compound. As the rebellion builds toward open war, Mockingjay – Part 1 sets the stage for the explosive finale. Welcome to the first installment of our Autumn-ish Book Club! In this flash analysis series, we take an academic approach to some of the most talked-about books in Romantasy and fantasy today. With over 13 years of combined academic literary training, we bring a critical lens to fandom favorites while keeping the discussion fun, thought-provoking, and accessible. In this episode, we're discussing The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. We explore Katniss Everdeen as a heroine whose personality type makes her both powerful and vulnerable, how Peeta functions as a unique male main character (MMC), and why the series' themes of power, media, and survival feel even more relevant today than when the books were first released. This is part 2 of this week's episode. This season, we'll be covering: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins A Cruel Thirst by Angela Montoya When the Moon Hatched by Sarah A. Parker Where the Shadows Meet by Patrice Caldwell Blood of Hercules by Jasmin Mas Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard The Jasad Heir by Sara Hashem And when book club wraps up, get ready! Our next full literary analysis will dive into Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas. If you're new here, we also have full seasons analyzing A Court of Thorns and Roses, A Court of Mist and Fury, A Court of Wings and Ruin, A Court of Frost and Starlight, House of Earth and Blood, House of Sky and Breath, Throne of Glass, and Crown of Midnight. Go back and check those out to see how we break down metaphors, symbolism, narrative structure, and character arcs through multiple literary lenses. Plus, we're thrilled to announce our newest venture: The Subtext Society Journal—the first of its kind, dedicated to Romance, Romantasy, and fandom with an academic yet accessible voice. We're publishing original essays and thought pieces, and we encourage listeners to submit their own articles for a chance to be featured. If you love Sarah J. E.Z., Mark, and Oscar set out on a journey to retrace Ray's footsteps in evangelism, beginning in Tahiti. Though Tahiti is often viewed as an exotic getaway, the guys were reminded that it's a land in spiritual need. On their first day, they encountered a group still out from the night before, and E.Z. boldly shared the gospel. Though one man started the conversation with a flamboyant demeanor, a visible change came over him as he listened. The guys emphasized the biblical principle of giving the law to the proud and grace to the humble. They stressed that salvation belongs to the Lord; their role is to remain faithful. From Tahiti, the journey continued to Fiji. Mark recalled starting to evangelize, only to be told by security guards they couldn't evangelize there. The guys crossed the street and quickly found someone open to the message—Oscar shared the gospel with a man named Peeta who immediately began weeping and asked how to follow Jesus. Oscar encouraged him to start by sharing with his nearby family. Peeta, living near a local chief's home, brought the guys there, leading to a touching moment where the chief's wife teared up hearing the gospel. E.Z. was deeply moved by the humility and openness they encountered. Next, the team traveled to Australia, where they balanced fun—like visiting a zoo—with the challenges of open-air preaching. Mark used a heckler as an illustration, while Oscar encountered initial rejection from two women who eventually agreed to talk when he appealed to their values. By leveraging cultural touchpoints, they found ways to engage in meaningful gospel conversations. In New Zealand, the guys visited where Ray was saved and began evangelizing. For Mark, walking through Ray's past was especially moving. They preached, connected with locals, and visited Ray's childhood home. The trip concluded in Hawaii, where even more opportunities to share the gospel arose.During a final Q&A, the guys addressed topics like how The Way of the Master began, the importance of redeeming downtime, and practical evangelism tips. Ray encouraged solo open-air preaching if done safely, and the team emphasized using time wisely. They affirmed that women can and should share the gospel, citing biblical examples like the woman at the well and Mary Magdalene. For those sharing with atheist family members, they advised appealing to conscience and loving boldly, noting that prayer is vital in evangelism. They concluded by addressing feelings of unworthiness, reminding listeners that grace covers all, and it's not about us—it's about Christ. Send us a textThanks for listening! We knew where we were heading, we knew that there was going to be tragedy, and after reading through the onslaught of horror in the games I'm just not sure we needed two of the longest chapters of the whole book dedicated to this part of the story. I live-read the epilogue to RoShawn, as well as the part where Peeta and Katniss watch Haymitch's games, and you'll have to wait to see her reaction! In this emotional and chaotic episode of The Book Fix, Yajaira and Cheli sit down for a girly deep dive into Mockingjay Part 1 and Part 2. This isn't your typical plot breakdown—this is a full-on catharsis session about missed moments, emotional damage, and all the bread Peeta should have brought into the arena. The hosts reflect on Katniss's awkward rise as a revolutionary symbol, Gale's war crimes (allegedly), and how Peeta's hijacking storyline was more brutal onscreen than they ever expected. They debate whether the movies needed to be split into two parts, roast the lack of screen time between Katniss and Peeta (again), and fantasize about a Hunger Games x Love Island crossover hosted by Caesar Flickerman. The girls also gush over Effie's upgraded role and surprise kiss with Haymitch, mourn Finnick's rushed and senseless death, and, of course, spiral into laughter and rage over that emotionally cold baby-filled epilogue.Despite their critiques, one thing is clear: these movies still hold up. Whether they're clowning Gale, defending Peeta's every move, or yelling “REAL,” this episode is for the girlies who still haven't emotionally recovered from The Hunger Games.Support the showOur Linktree: https://linktr.ee/thebookfix?utm_source=linktree_admin_sharebecome our Patron ♡ https://www.patreon.com/BookFixbuy us a book ♡ https://www.buymeacoffee.com/thebookfixBusiness Inquiries: thebookfixpodcast@gmail.comfollow us on Tiktok! ♡ https://www.tiktok.com/@thebookfix
In this episode of their Hunger Games deep dive, Yajaira and Cheli take on Mockingjay—and they do not hold back. From the rushed character deaths (Finnick deserved a full chapter, not a sentence) to the lack of meaningful dialogue between Katniss and Peeta, the hosts question why the emotional payoff just wasn't there. Katniss choosing Peeta makes sense, but where was the scene where they talked it out? Where was the slow-burn reconnection? And why was Haymitch the only one she seemed to emotionally bond with? In this episode of The Book Fix, Yajaira and Cheli continue their Hunger Games deep dive with a chaotic, passionate breakdown of Catching Fire (2013). The episode kicks off with a spirited conversation about bread (or the shocking lack of it from Panem's most famous baker), before diving into everything from sourdough dreams to Peeta's missed opportunities to be a true himbo hero. They reflect on Katniss kissing Gale way too much, Peeta being the ultimate damsel in distress, and all the key moments the movie left out—like the iconic medicinal plant book scene and the loss of Peeta's leg. The girls also demand more vulnerability from Katniss, more strength from Peeta, and more context for why their characters live in fancy houses now.Of course, things derail into talk about dating short kings, catching the ick, workplace cringe, and whether it's even possible to hate a movie that meant so much to them growing up. They may have complaints, but this one still gets a nostalgic 5 out of 5. Snow may be obsessed with their love story, but Yajaira and Cheli are obsessed with this movie.Support the showOur Linktree: https://linktr.ee/thebookfix?utm_source=linktree_admin_sharebecome our Patron ♡ https://www.patreon.com/BookFixbuy us a book ♡ https://www.buymeacoffee.com/thebookfixBusiness Inquiries: thebookfixpodcast@gmail.comfollow us on Tiktok! ♡ https://www.tiktok.com/@thebookfix

In this episode of The Book Fix, hosts Yajaira and Cheli dive headfirst into the cinematic world of The Hunger Games (2012) following their recent reread of the book. They ditch the plot recap to focus instead on the gritty film style, casting choices, and all the small (and not-so-small) differences between book and screen. From the shaky camera work that left them dizzy, to Jennifer Lawrence's stoic portrayal of Katniss, they compare the emotional richness of the book to the movie's more muted tone. The duo gets especially animated over missed opportunities—like Katniss's musical talents being downplayed, Peeta's love being underdeveloped, and the absence of iconic lines like “the boy with the bread.” They also touch on the awkward shift from book's slow-burn romance to the movie's blink-and-you-miss-it kisses. Bonus? An unhinged tangent about types of bread, platform Converse, and Snow's bald-headed crimes.Whether you're team "Gale was unnecessary" or just here to roast the Capitol, this episode is a nostalgic, chaotic tribute to the movie that launched a dystopian generation. In this episode of The Book Fix, Yajaira and Cheli crack open their reread of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, and it's a mix of chaos, nostalgia, and bread-fueled sarcasm. They reflect on the book's most emotional and iconic moments—from Rue's tragic death and Katniss' symbolic rebellion to Peeta's dramatic mud camouflage and the Capitol's twisted game rules. They dive into Katniss' slow emotional processing, the awkward song lyrics, and the lack of dialogue that made this reread feel hollow than they remembered. Still, the themes and structure held strong, even if the romance felt like an act—and not just to the Capitol. Send us a textWelcome back to Ashley & Liz's dystopian sci fi episode bonus series: The Hunger Games!Today we get SERIOUS as we discuss the amazingly well written, heart wrenching grand finale to the original trilogy. What parallels do we see reflected in real life? Are the dystopian themes regarding media control, rebellion, war, government control, environmental degradation and resource allocation applicable to today's world? Come with us as we open these topics of discussion through a Katniss Everdeen lens.If you've been following along and watched our “From 1984 to Hunger Games” dystopian themes in media and literature episode then you know we're fascinated with everything about this genre and need to delve into this discussion! It just happens to be a BIG bonus that Ashley had never read it before. The debate currently on the book talk table is whether or not books (and the act of reading) are inherently political. We'd encourage anyone who has a doubt in their mind to read this series… with themes like media control, a totalitarian regime, and rebellion, it's hard to see how it ISN'T political.Episode 3 covers book 3: Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins. The first five-ish minutes are spoiler free with our one sentence rapid star reviews. Then we jam pack this mini episode with an entire plot summary in five sentences (yes, with a keyboard…), discuss what our faves and fail characters and plot points are, our feelings, notable quotes, and add a fun piece of Hunger Games trivia. Then we wrap this trilogy up with the ultimate Gale vs. Peeta debate. Were these characters meant to represent something much larger than themselves? We'll see… and then we'll dive right into A Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes… because obviously Snow was a smash.

We're back! With this two parter episode on the Hunger Games 2 and it sure is another Hunger Games. That's for sure. 10/10 lived up to the marketing. Will Katniss be able to either smother the flames of rebellion with her love or fan the flames of rebellion with her love? Will she become a symbol that President Snow wants to avoid killing so she doesn't become a martyr OR does he try to kill her because nuh uh? Why is everyone trying to save Peeta? Where is Gail? Who is Gail? Will President Snow's plans make any sense? Find out... maybe in this book. You'll have to listen to the entire episode (possibly a few times, we want your views) in order to find out maybe.Support the showDiscord - https://discord.gg/6BaNRtcP8CThreads - https://www.threads.net/@wordsaboutbookspodcastInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/wordsaboutbookspodcastBlog - https://blog.wordsaboutbooks.ninja/Buy the Books - https://bookshop.org/shop/wabpod

ACOFAE Podcast Presents: Catching Fire: "Eyes bright, chins up, smiles ON." Ending the year with some "welcome to the revolution" vibes, Laura Marie and Jessica Marie are rewatching Catching Fire (movie two) in the The Hunger Games series (books by Suzanne Collins.) Nothing says the "end of the holidays" like a slog through the country to visit people that don't really like you, all to be roped back into the same thing you said you'd never do again. We laugh so we don't cry. Katniss and Peeta are traveling here and there and eventually back to The Capital for murderous shenanigans that include getting back in the arena again because Snow said so. Shattering the dome of expectation (ha), Katniss finds herself as the figurehead of a revolution that may or may not be more far along than she knows. Just die. TW / CW: none to our awareness. If you've seen the second Hunger Games movie - Catching Fire - you know that Katniss and Peeta, two of the main characters, are touring the districts by train after winning the 74th annual Hunger Games, as is custom for the winner to do. Things go badly in District 11, when Katniss accidentally provokes the crowd into doing something that gets one of them killed by Capital Peacekeepers. Completely freaked out, Katniss cries to Haymitch, hers and Peeta's mentor, about how to just get through the end of the tour so they can go home. "Wake up, girl," Haymitch says, snapping his fingers. "This trip doesn't end. You ain't EVER getting off this train!" The concept of never getting off the train is pretty terrifying in those circumstances! But when you look at it from a different perspective, it's actually a powerful way to think about your health journey, and here's why. One reason SO many people gain back weight is because they keep "getting off the train." Put another way, they think they can skip doing the exact things that work to get and keep the weight off! I call it the diet mentality, and it's only gonna ever lead to frustration and failure. Unlike the train in the Hunger Games, you actually want all the incredible things that come with staying on the real food, water, and sleep train to get and KEEP your weight off! Listen, there IS a way to stay on the train and love it. In this week's new podcast, I'll explain why you ain't ever getting off this train...and how and why that's actually a great thing! Dare I say it … but I think we got a bit political in this podcast! The Brownload party was discussing Rishi Sunaks love for Bhangra, Sadiq Khan back in as London Mayor and even the mighty Monty Panesar getting into politics! Plus I've been eaves dropping on peoples conversations in Sainsbury and I'm not sure about the way they pronounce things - Is it Pita or Peeeta?

Catching Fire chapters 18-19 We are so back! We kick off 2024 with a rowdy return to podcasting about work sucking, holidays sucking, and Peeta sucking. We have some exciting news on that front this week however, although neither of us is convinced it really happened. Still, even if things are feeling a bit predictable, we certainly can't accuse these chapters of being boring! Waterworld antics, bonkers lies, trident headshots--there's a lot of wild stuff packed in here as we finally get to the Hunger Games part of this Hunger Games novel.
Catching Fire chapters 16-17 We're still not at the Hunger Game. It sure seems like we're running out of book, but instead of duking it out in the arena our heroes are still meeting their foes and/or potential allies. Are Katniss and Peeta building a heist team, or are they just going to fight all these guys? We've got lots to discuss about this and more, but first we also have some Neopets updates, strings drama, and dental work to discuss! (If you're not a fan of dentist anxieties/horror stories, you can start the episode at 9:20!)

Catching Fire chapters 12 & 13 We have a lot to catch up on this week! Neopets news, string performances, (not so) scary films... plus, we've got a pair of chapters that propel Catching Fire forward into exciting territory. Hopefully? There's going to be another Hunger Game in these books, it turns out. We speculate on how exactly that might shake out, what would make it more interesting than the first outing, and much more. Side note: I recommend Alan Wake in the beginning segment. I don't spoil anything direct, BUT if you are getting into the series because of the new sequel and want to go in as pure as possible, skip forward 3 minutes when I bring it up! Likewise, I bring up the FNAF movie and I don't think I truly spoil anything but I talk about the overall structure.
Some would say it's too early to remake, Willy's Wonderland. But whenever I say that, 10 year-olds yell at me unintelligibly. Synopsis Many remakes end up outshining the original, like John Carpenter's The Thing and Cronenberg's The Fly. But it's inevitable to still ask, do we really need a remake of Willy's Wonderland? It's only been two years since Willy's Wonderland broke new ground with the concept of a haunted Chuck E Cheese whose animatronics attack a night time security guard. Well Here we are with Five Night's At Freddy's, Which tells the tale of a haunted Chuck E. Cheese who's animatronics attack a night time security guard. Except this time, there is dialogue. Will this addition of character development and extra plot propel this remake into the lofty heights of The Thing and The Fly? Only time will tell. Review of Five Nights at Freddy's In evaluating Five Nights at Freddy's and determining what type of movie this is going to be, there is really only one piece of information that you need to know. It's starring Josh Hutcherson. So you can expect to get a rather harmless horror movie that has a subtle moodiness. You can go in and rest assured that nothing truly awful is going to befall the guy that played Peeta in the Hunger Games movie. Much like when I saw that Brenden Frasier was starring in the 90s The Mummy, I knew that it was going to be a goofy harmless adventure movie. This is a very confusing movie, and it took until the end before I had any semblance of understanding what was going on. Why were the animatronics haunted by murderous children, and why is sleeping on the job not a fireable offense for a nighttime security guard? These and other questions are half answered by a culminating reveal that will make you go, “Wait what? Ok whatever…” I really don't know what people expected from an adaptation of a spooky video game, and I have little to no knowledge of the source material, but this is a movie. It feels like a movie, and not just a factory of jump scares, which is what I would expect. But in the end, it's not that interesting of a movie. Most of the plot seems very tacked on and arbitrary. Like a wacky mad libs of character development. “Name a traumatic life experience that haunts a protagonist: Brother kidnapped when he was younger.” “Name a precocious attribute of the young sister: colors creepy and precinct drawings”. Nothing particularly feels real or connected throughout the plot, and it resulted in me being pretty disconnected from the characters or having any real interest in the resolution of the story. It mostly felt like waiting until a reveal, and that's pretty much exactly what happened. Score 4/10
We don't want to get too political, but we have strong opinions about who the next president of the United States of America should be. Who else has the power to write The Hunger Games books and films and probably laws too? Who else could turn their vast experience autographing The Hunger Games books into the very presidential skill of signing bills into law? Who else has experience dealing with very real and pressing issues, like deciding whether Katniss should end up with Gale or Peeta, or solving the climate crisis? Honestly, we're starting to think Suzanne Collins is the only responsible option. In This Episode: Rank You Very Much, That's A Cornah, First Loves, Synops-Us, Pop Princess Power AnthemsDonate to the Entertainment Community Fund to help folks impacted by strike-related work stoppage!https://entertainmentcommunity.org/how-get-help-and-give-help-during-work-stoppageSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/two-chunks-and-a-hunk/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
