Ninth month in the Islamic calendar, and the month of fasting for Muslims

Sometimes I wonder if “wise livelihood” is possible in the law. Can we support ourselves and our organizations and not deal in intoxicants, poisons, weapons, or humans…given the many nuanced interpretations of those words? Including the ways we might, from some perspective we can't quite see, inadvertently be dealing in one of those ways? And can we ever completely do no harm, in our adversary system? In our divided country? Our impacted world? Maybe. And then I wonder, what if no one does that perfectly, but everyone stays committed? That alone feels like a huge deal. A win. One that could, maybe, turn the tide. And if it doesn't, then at least at the end we'll be able to say, “I pointed my work; pointed my heart and mind, towards wisdom.” Which is, by itself, a great thing. Happy Lunar New Year. Ramadan Mubarak. Have a reflective Lent. ♥️♥️
Ramadan Mubarak! I've been playing around with something in my spare time and I want to share a little piece of it with you. You might have experienced that the beauty and majesty of the Quran is sorely lost in translation. There are better English translations today than when I was growing up, so the message may be more clear now, but it still requires a lot of 'hard work' to get through an English translation. For the most part, I find myself needing to read at least 3 translations before I can really appreciate the message and find a blend of meanings that fits my understanding.

"It's about sacrifice. It's about spirituality. It's about getting closer to God.” “Ramadan is a time to better yourself — a new beginning for many things.”This is a replay of a past episode from April 2022Ramadan Mubarak (رمضان مبارك)! Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by 1.8 BILLION Muslims worldwide. It is ~30 days of fasting, prayer, reflection and community — lasting from one crescent moon to the next. And as beautiful a culture and religion as Islam is, we know far too little about it, nor what Ramadan really means for its people. For this holy month of Ramadan we wanted to go deeper on one of the biggest holidays in the world. So we decided to fire up the Rabat-signal to get a little help from our FrieMMds — past guests Seif Hamid, our favorite Egyptian American musician by way of Cleveland (Soof!), and Lena Shareef, our favorite Pakistani American comics podcaster (Grounded Geeks). We asked them everything from how they celebrated as Ramadan as kids in the midwest and back in their respective motherlands of Egypt and Pakistan, what fasting means for them, Ramadan's role in the culture, and even learned what all of us can do to celebrate Ramadan. al-Muzzammil 5 - 9Assalamualaikum,It is Tuesday, that means it is time for Tajweed Tuesday. Last week we embarked our journey into Surah al-Muzzammil and read ayat 1 - 4.This week, insha Allah, we will read ayat 5 - 9. If you are listening to this episode as a podcast, I highly recommend that you watch the video as there are some concepts that are easier to understand by seeing. All right, without further ado, let's get started. Remember, we are aiming for smoothness. Start slow as slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.I'd like to also take this opportunity to wish all subscribers of Grounded, Ramadan Mubarak. It is really apt that we are studying this powerful surah as we enter the month of the Quran. The month where we spend our nights praying extra and reading more Quran — just like the surah suggests.May Allah allow us to reach Ramadan and bless us with a fruitful Ramadan where we fast in a way that develops taqwa and spend our nights with the Quran. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit groundeddaily.substack.com/subscribe

Ten Things You Need to Know
Ramadan Mubarak!!! We promise this is not the Ramadan episode you'd expect. This week we're answering your questions and sharing Ramadan stories LIKE AN OPEN BOOK. We talk about periods and how annoyingggg it is to have to pretend to fast so that the men in our lives aren't uncomfortable and the lengths we go to to prove we're fasting when we LITERALLY CAN'T. We also talk about what Ramadan is like once you're married INCLUDING how intimate you're allowed to get with your spouse in this holy month, the shift from a Ramadan family experience to the loneliness and quiet of Ramadan as a couple, and more. In the last 10 minutes of this episode, we share some hilarious stories from listeners that will leave you SHOOK. This episode is Part 1 of Ramadan Rants (Part 2 to come in EP 5).
Ramadan Mubarak! We check in with people of the Muslim community, their intentions, traditions and plans for making the most of this holy month. Ramadan has begun, which means that close to two billion people worldwide will be abstaining from food and water from sunrise to sunset. But Ramadan is about much more than fasting. It is one of the most sacred periods for Muslims. The vastly diverse global community of Muslims spends the month of Ramadan exploring the deeper and personal meaning of their faith. It is also a time for the community to practice generosity–to themselves and others. To celebrate and learn more about this holiday, host Kai Wright speaks to Ahmed Ali Akbar, a James Beard award-winning writer and the host of the Crooked Media podcast Radiolingo. Akbar is also the creator and host of See Something Say Something, a podcast focused on the Muslim American experience. Together, they explore how Ramadan celebrations can evolve over time and take calls from listeners who are celebrating. We also hear from producer Rahima Nasa about her plans for Ramadan from trying new recipes to learning about different Islamic cultures. You can follow her celebration on our Instagram @noteswithkai. She'll be posting weekly throughout the month. Companion listening for this episode: Face the Darkness, Welcome the Light (12/20/2021) Do you need a revival? Ramadan Mubarak to everyone honoring the holy month of Ramadan, a time of fasting, introspection and prayer. Which always means there's something good to eat eventually! Today, David Waldman and Greg Dworkin bring us another in a series of KITM Donald Trump Pre-Indictment Specials. This will be an ongoing series because just about everyone other than us is making money off it. (Also, because Trump does many indictable things.) Donald's always happy to fleece the rubes. He also believes that this will get him an advantage over Ron DeSantis, as if he ever needed one. Mostly however, Donald Trump is looking forward to the pageantry of his very first perp walk. After all, this marks the apex all of Trump's career goals and ambitions, while simultaneously achieving that long-awaited pivot to the better appreciation of the plight of the common man. Or perhaps getting indicted is ”a bad thing”? The case is so novel and complex that attorneys are considering divorce lawyer tactics. Lordy, communications between Stormy Daniels and Trump attorney Joe Tacopina have been turned over to Manhattan DA. Wait until Jack Smith gets hold of him. Jack has a Whitman's Sampler of incrimination to pick through. What's the Republican party to do? The answer is that they will do worse and suffer more. Well, they could vote for Mike Pence... a joke that even Mike himself might get some day. Special KITM correspondent Rosalyn MacGregor reports from Barry County, Michigan where they raffle off AR-15s in order to allow heathen public schoolers a Christian education. Will West Michigan become a Christian gun sanctuary? Clarence Thomas is a Constitutional originalist, in that the Founders would know that he makes stuff up on the spot. Clarence's clairvoyance has led to new gun law interpretations throughout the courts as other judges pretend to guess what their ancestors had in mind.
