Early August is usually something of a lull in the film calendar, but this year, at least in New York City, it's proved to be a goldmine—particularly for repertory programming. We had planned to record a single episode of our Rep Report series this week, but there was so much good stuff out there that we ended up recording three different conversations about three different programs, which we'll be sharing over the next few days. Stay tuned!  On today's episode, Jed Rapfogel, film programmer at Anthology Film Archives, joins Film Comment editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute to discuss Verbatim, a new film series he's put together at the famed New York City theater. Verbatim features an exciting and wide-ranging lineup of titles, spanning features, shorts, experimental films, and made-for-TV titles that are all united by one theme: each of them makes verbatim use of a real-life transcript—be it a court document, a journalistic interview, a letter, or something else. Jed, Clint, and Devika share some of the highlights of the series, including James N. Kienitz Wilkins's Public Hearing (2012), which uses the transcript of a municipal town-hall about the expansion of a Walmart, James Benning's Landscape Suicide (1986), which recreates interviews with a pair of killers, and Elisabeth Subrin's short film, Maria Schneider, 1983 (2022), which offers three different riffs on an archival television interview with the titular actress. Martine Kalbhenn was 3000 miles away at her family's home in Kennebunk, Maine when her 5 year old son Jackson tripped and fell while running and hurt his leg badly while visiting his Grandmother in California. Martine received a phone call from her husband Kyle and made plans to immediately travel out west. Jackson's fall was far from normal, as he was diagnosed with the Bone Cancer Ewings Sarcoma. Martine will talk about that time period  in which his fall occurred in late July, and how he is doing now during his treatment protocol, taking place at the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital, located at the Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine. 

Last November, I had Alexander Chee on the show. And in preparation for his interview, I read The Best American Essays 2022. I came across an essay titled “Ghosts.” This essay stood out from the rest of the anthology because it seemed to have 9 iterations. When I read further, I was baffled at the idea that a writer had used Artificial Intelligence to produce prose. Even more intriguing was the fact that AI had helped this writer create a beautiful meditation on grief. After reading it a bit more closely, I realized that it wasn't necessarily the AI that was the driving factor of this piece, but rather that the author was pushing back against the response that the AI was giving her and using that as a catalyst for poetic reflection. After reading this, I knew I had to read everything she'd written. In addition to the essay Ghosts, Vauhini Vara is the author of the novel THE IMMORTAL KING RAO. This novel was recently listed as the finalist for the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, amongst many other accolades.  Vauhini also has a book coming out on September 26th titled THIS IS SALVAGED. And in addition to her creative work, she has been a tech reporter, writing in The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, NYT Magazine, and WIRED.  I wanted to speak to Vauhini because while AI is all the rage right now, it seems that many of us don't really know how to talk about it. AI's ubiquity, brought on by the launch of CHAT GPT at the end of last year, has clear implications, economically, and culturally, but what are those implications? And how strongly will they influence the future. THE IMMORTAL KING RAO tells a generational story of a family coconut grove in India, and the subsequent founding of a multinational tech corporation that goes on to rule the world. As someone who's covered almost two decades of technological development and also spent 13 years imagining a technocratic future and all its ramifications, Vauhini is the perfect person to give us a read about the intersection of art and technology.
