According to our friends at FanDuel, the Lakers were double digit underdogs for Thursday's game in Boston, and that was BEFORE the news broke that Anthony Davis and LeBron James would both be out with injuries. That bumped the line up over 15. Whatever! The Lakers shocked the world, taking an early lead over the Celtics and never giving it up, winning 114-105 in a game that, for a night at least, changed the vibes around the team in a very positive way. Austin Reaves scored 32 points, and hit seven of his 10 3-pointers. D'Angelo Russell was only 5-20 from the floor, but 4-8 from downtown and contributed 14 assists and two steals. Jaxson Hayes had 16 points, 10 rebounds and (no, this is not a typo) zero fouls. None. In 34 minutes of burn. Everyone who played contributed, as it had to be for the Lakers to pull the upset. Was it a little goofy statistically? Sure was! The Lakers shot 40 percent overall... and over 52% from 3. (Just to note one example.) But whatever. They were seriously undermanned, especially after Jarred Vanderbilt left just before the end of the first half with a foot injury. His status going forward is yet to be determined. So the Lakers still have problems, no question. But for one night, at least, it was nothing but happiness. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: The Lakers shock the NBA world. The Lakers spoil Luka Doncic's return to action. Correspondent Mark Meyers reports. ((NOTE pronuinciation of Doncic is DAHN'-chihch))
It has been a tough go for the Lakers in the early going of the 2023-24 NBA season, no question. Huge chunks of the rotation have either been in and out of the lineup, or in the case of Gabe Vincent and Jared Vanderbilt, basically out. Austin Reaves got off to a terrible start before starting to right the ship, and now Anthony Davis is on the shelf with muscle spasms in his hip/groin area.Meanwhile, the strength of schedule has been intense. But Wednesday, the Lakers did something they haven't done all year, even with all the adversity — they didn't bother to show up. LA was flat from the get go, and never came close to competing on the same level as the Rockets, fell behind big early and didn't mount any type of challenge in an embarrassing 128-94 loss in Houston.Save Rui Hachimura, who returned to the lineup after finally being released from the NBA's concussion protocol, the Lakers were awful. Christian Wood, starting in place of Davis had no points, and only took one shot. LeBron was absent defensively, loose with his passing and generally not sharp. D'Angelo Russell's final line looked ok, but most of it came in the third quarter after the Rockets had the game well in hand. Reaves was bad. And so on.The Lakers are now 3-5 heading to Phoenix on Friday to face a Suns squad that might still be without Devin Booker, but will have Bradley Beal back in the lineup. They are dangerously close to putting themselves into the type of hole they spent all of last season trying to climb out of, in a Western Conference that is unlikely to do them the type of favors it did last season. It's not time to panic. It's easy to reconcile the record with the context. But the fact of the matter is the Lakers need to find ways to win games even with players missing, and at the very least, they have to put out an effort that far exceeds what everyone saw on Wednesday.HOSTS: Andy and Brian KamenetzkySEGMENT 1: The Lakers get stomped in Houston.SEGMENT 2: Is Anthony Davis going to miss more time?SEGMENT 3: When should Lakers fans get nervous? It's an epic second round series, so we have an epic show ahead of Tuesday's Game 1, in a crossover episode with Cyrus Saatsaz and Kylen Mills, hosts of Locked On Warriors. It starts with a series of questions about the Warriors...The season has been all over the place - is there a moment in time Lakers fans should look at, or a certain configuration of available players, or a similar sign to understand what kind of team the Warriors are now? (Because with the Lakers, for example, nothing that happened before the trade deadline matters even a little.) What about Kevon Looney and Draymond Green? Can they neutralize Anthony Davis, in particular? Why do fans seem so upset with head coach Steve Kerr? Then it's questions about the Lakers...Who guards Steph? Should Looney scare people who are pulling for the Lakers to win? What role player has the best chance to be impactful given the matchups and the context? (Hint: It rhymes with Fluey Glotchimura.)Overall, this has the potential to be a series that lives up to all the hype, given the sheer star power, good depth, rowdy crowds and high stakes involved. It's very possibly the last meaningful installment of Steph vs. LeBron. There's a lot on the line for both teams, in trying to determine what the teams look like next season. Should be a lot of fun, and it starts on Tuesday with a game the Lakers will be pushing to win, because they will never be as well rested as they are in Game 1.HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky, with Cyrus Saatsaz and Kylen Mills. Draft picks, shmaft shmicks. Harrison of "Lake Show" and Sasha of "I Love Basketball" get hype for the next few years of watching Anthony Davis play basketball with Lebron James on their favorite team. They break down the drafting rights exchanges from the trade deal and come to the conclusion that numbers are indeed stupid and hedonism is truly the way forward. Then news breaks!
