In this special edition episode of The Assembly Call, Jerod is joined by IU alum and Bay Area radio veteran Damon Bruce for an in-depth and wide-ranging conversation about a number of topics of interest to IU fans and grads -- chief among them, why Damon is so excited about Trayce's fit in Golden State.Note: there are a few short instances of the connection breaking up during the first 25 minutes of the interview with Damon. They're quick and a bit awkward but don't interfere too much with the flow of conversation. Just fight through them because the conversation on the other side is worth it!Among the topics covered: • Why Golden State is such a good fit for Trayce • Why Trayce is uniquely qualified to succeed in Golden State where other rookies have failed• The impact Draymond Green and Kevon Looney can have on Trayce's development• Jalen's fit in L.A.• Why Damon had horrible timing in terms of when he arrived in and left Bloomington• The challenges and opportunities of the new media landscape• Why fellow Back Home Network podcaster Galen Clavio is so great• Damon's experience following IU basketball during his time at IU• Anecdotes from taking Bob Knight's coaching class• Why Keith Smart, Calbert Cheaney, and Chris Mullin all wanted to see Damon's notebookAnd much more. Here is the link to subscribe to Damon's new YouTube show: https://www.youtube.com/@damonbruceplusAs he mentions, he'll be doing a lot of Trayce-centric content moving forward, so it's definitely a resource worth subscribing to and following.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The defending conference champs are in familiar territory. Boston trailed 3-2 last season in the second round against Milwaukee before it won Game 6 on the road and the clincher at home. Game 7 is Sunday in Boston. Tatum scored 19 points. Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey each scored 26 points for the 76ers. Nuggets 125, Suns 100 – Nuggets blow past Suns 125-100, advance to Western Conference finals Nikola Jokic scored 32 points, Jamal Murray added 26 and the Denver Nuggets advanced to the Western Conference finals for the first time since 2020 by beating the shorthanded Phoenix Suns 125-100 in Game 6 on Thursday night. Denver’s series victory comes two seasons after the Nuggets were embarrassed in a second-round postseason sweep by the Suns. This time, it was the Suns who were embarrassed. On their home floor, too. Denver jumped to an 81-51 lead by halftime. The Nuggets will play in the conference finals for the first time since they lost to the Lakers in five games in the Florida bubble during the COVID-19 pandemic. Tonight New York Knicks at Miami Heat, 7:30 p.m.                                (MIA leads 3-2) Golden State Warriors at Los Angeles Lakers, 10:00 p.m.          (LAL leads 3-2) NBA – Lakers coach Ham expects Anthony Davis to play in Game 6 vs Warriors Lakers coach Darvin Ham said he excepts Anthony Davis to play Friday night in Los Angeles, adding that the eight-time All-Star big man is “not showing any signs of anything” and is not in the NBA’s concussion protocol after being hit in the head late in Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals. Davis is “doing great,” Ham said, and is probable for Game 6 against the Golden State Warriors. Davis was hurt by what appeared to be an inadvertent shot to the head from Golden State’s Kevon Looney midway through the fourth quarter of the Warriors’ 121-106 victory in San Francisco. NBA – Heat, Lakers get another chance to move on; Knicks, Warriors on brink Whatever it takes. That’s the credo at this time of year in the NBA playoffs. It’s why New York teammates Jalen Brunson and Quentin Grimes are playing 48 minutes. It’s why Miami’s Jimmy Butler is playing through ankle soreness. It’s why Golden State’s Stephen Curry is taking more shots per game than he ever has in a playoff run. It’s why the Los Angeles Lakers’ Anthony Davis will likely play through whatever is ailing him after he had to leave early Wednesday night. The Heat play host to New York and the Lakers play host to Golden State on Friday. Both home clubs have 3-2 series leads. NHL – National Hockey League – 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs – Round 2 (Best of 7) Last Night Carolina Hurricanes 3, New Jersey Devils 2 – OT                       (CAR wins 4-1) Dallas Stars 5, Seattle Kraken 2                                           (DAL leads 3-2) Hurricanes 3, Devils 2 – OT – Jesper Fast scores on OT power play, Hurricanes eliminate Devils in Game 5 Jesper Fast deflected in a shot by Jesperi Kotkaniemi on a power play at 7:09 of overtime to give the Carolina Hurricanes a series-ending 3-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Thursday night. Fast’s deflection while shielding Akira Schmid set off a celebration for the Hurricanes, who never led until the final play and twice trailed by a goal before winning the best-of-seven series 4-1 to reach the Eastern Conference final. In the first tight game of the second-round matchup, Fast made amends for when he popped a puck over the goal in front of an open net in the first period. Jaccob Slavin and Brent Burns also scored for Carolina, and Frederik Andersen made 27 saves. Stars 5, Kraken 2 – Hintz has 2 goals, Pavelski scores again as Stars take 3-2 series lead over Kraken Roope Hintz scored two goals and had an assist, Joe Pavelski scored his seventh goal of the second-round series and the Dallas Stars beat the Seattle Kraken 5-2 in Game 5. The Stars have a 3-2 series lead. Pavelski also had an assist on Hintz’s second goal, which ricocheted hard out of the net with 8:37 left for a two-goal lead, though play continued for nearly a half-minute before a replay review that confirmed the score. Radek Faksa added an empty-netter. Game 6 is Saturday in Seattle. Adam Larsson and Jared McCann scored for Seattle. Tonight Florida Panthers at Toronto Maple Leafs, 7:00 p.m.                   (FLA leads 3-1) Edmonton Oilers at Vegas Golden Knights, 10:00 p.m.               (Series tied 2-2) NFL – NFL season kicks off with Super Bowl champion Chiefs hosting LionsS Patrick Mahomes and the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs will kick off the season against the upstart Detroit Lions in a matchup of high-powered offenses and they’ll host Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles in a Super Bowl rematch on “Monday Night Football” in Week 11. When Anthony Davis left the floor, and then the arena, following that big fourth quarter forearm to the head from Golden State center Kevon Looney, it was reasonable to think that he might not play in Game 6 Friday night. Or even Game 7, if the series went back to San Francisco on Sunday. It was incredibly deflating in the moment, for the Lakers as a team, and definitely for Lakers fans. Good news! He's gonna play. Davis didn't even have to enter the league's concussion protocol. So whatever that blow did to him, it apparently wasn't enough to give him a concussion. Good for Davis, good for the Lakers. Of course, in the interim, Davis absorbed an enormous amount of mockery from high profile members of the basketball media, who all but called him soft. They laughed and mocked in ways they likely wouldn't have for just about any other player in the league. And they did it following a shot to the head. It was all pretty repulsive, and reflective of attitudes about injury and toughness that sports culture has, at times, seemed to move away from. But clearly not all the way. So assuming Davis plays, what does that mean for the game? Are there any big adjustments left to make in this series? Or is it a matter of one team going out and simply executing better the game plan we all know is coming? Maybe the Lakers have a little twist up their sleeves? Would swapping Jarred Vanderbilt out of the starting lineup make sense? It's not technically a must win for the Lakers.... but it's about as close as you get. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Anthony Davis is going to play! Anthony Davis is going to play! SEGMENT 2: Are there any adjustments left to make? SEGMENT 3: There are high profile members of the NBA media that owe Davis an apology. AD has a chance to throw the double bird at folks with a big Game 6. NCAAMBB – Huggins agrees to pay cut, suspension for homophobic slur West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins has agreed to a three-game suspension and a $1 million pay cut after he used a homophobic slur during a radio show. The agreement allows Huggins to keep his job as the school’s basketball coach, but the blunder will leave a lasting mark on his Hall of Fame career. During a call to a Cincinnati radio station Monday, Huggins was asked whether he had a chance of landing an Xavier player from the transfer portal. Huggins then made offensive comments about Xavier fans. He later apologized. Huggins will also be required to meet with LGBTQ+ leaders as part of the agreement. NCAAFB – Smart says declining invitation for White House visit was not political Georgia coach Kirby Smart insists there was no political motivation behind the decision for his national championship football team to decline an invitation to visit the White House in June. Instead, Smart says scheduling issues, including a youth camp in June at the Georgia football facility, made it impossible for the Bulldogs to accept the invitation to attend a June 12 event with other college teams at the White House. The event is described by President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden as “College Athlete Day.” Smart told the Athens Banner-Herald “Timeline-wise it didn’t work.” Golf – PGA Championship has 99 of top 100 in the field for Oak Hill, no Sergio Garcia The PGA Championship always tries to get the strongest field in the majors. This year is no exception. The field next week for Oak Hill just outside Rochester, New York, features 99 of the top 100 in the world ranking. Missing is Will Zalatoris, who is out for the rest of the season after back surgery. The field features 18 players who play for Saudi-backed LIV Golf. One player missing from the 155-player list is Sergio Garcia. He is No. 189 in the world. LIV Golf does not get ranking points. This will be the first time Garcia is ineligible for a major since 1999. NFL – Ex-Raider Ruggs pleads guilty to driving drunk at 156 mph, causing fatal crash Former Las Vegas Raiders player Henry Ruggs has admitted he drove drunk at up to 156 mph before causing a fiery crash that killed a woman in November 2021. The 24-year-old former first-round NFL draft pick avoided trial with a plea deal on Wednesday that is expected to result in a sentence of three to 10 years in state prison. Prosecutors dropped other charges, on which Ruggs might have faced up to 50 years behind bars. The former Alabama Crimson Tide player was dropped by the Raiders shortly after the crash. Family members of the woman who died declined to comment following Ruggs’ plea. He remains free pending sentencing Aug. 9. The Lakers Lose Game 5, 121-106, as Anthony Davis Leaves With a Head Injury

There was always a good chance the Lakers could lose Game 5. Golden State wasn't just facing elimination, down 3-1 in the series, but perhaps the end of their championship era, with talk of summer time changes in the air should they be eliminated. The Lakers could always lean in on Game 6 Friday at Crypto.com. So the final score (121-106) isn't necessarily a big deal. How they lost? Oh yeah, that's a problem. Anthony Davis absorbed a careless forearm from Warriors center Kevon Looney about halfway through the final quarter. Davis, clearly shaken, went straight to the bench, and then was taken to the tunnel where he was wheeled out. Hopefully as a precaution, but it's not good. Davis could be facing entry into the league's concussion protocol, which (even if Davis wakes up tomorrow and feels like a new man) could put his availability for Friday in question. An by the looks of it immediately following the injury, a quick recovery is hardly guaranteed. (Though Darvin Ham said postgame that he thought Davis was already looking much better. Keep in mind, Dr. Ham also said D'Angelo Russell was totes ok when he hurt his ankle, and he missed a ton of time.) Meanwhile, LeBron appeared to tweak an ankle. So did Dennis Schröder. Austin Reaves took a tremendous amount of punishment. All in all, this game went about as poorly as the Lakers could have scripted it. Now, it's about Game 6, and who is going to be able to play in it. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: Anthony Davis take a forearm to the head, and leaves the game early. The Lakers lost game 5 but far more important than that was the loss of Anthony Davis to a head injury after catching a wayward arm/elbow from Kevon Looney. So far the prognosis is positive on Davis, who hopefully can play in game 6. Meanwhile, the Lakers struggled in multiple ways in game 5, including with their transition defense and offensive decision-making, and the officiating was controversial to say the least... 9. It's an epic second round series, so we have an epic show ahead of Tuesday's Game 1, in a crossover episode with Cyrus Saatsaz and Kylen Mills, hosts of Locked On Warriors. It starts with a series of questions about the Warriors... The season has been all over the place - is there a moment in time Lakers fans should look at, or a certain configuration of available players, or a similar sign to understand what kind of team the Warriors are now? (Because with the Lakers, for example, nothing that happened before the trade deadline matters even a little.) What about Kevon Looney and Draymond Green? Can they neutralize Anthony Davis, in particular? Why do fans seem so upset with head coach Steve Kerr? Then it's questions about the Lakers... Who guards Steph? Should Looney scare people who are pulling for the Lakers to win? What role player has the best chance to be impactful given the matchups and the context? (Hint: It rhymes with Fluey Glotchimura.) Overall, this has the potential to be a series that lives up to all the hype, given the sheer star power, good depth, rowdy crowds and high stakes involved. It's very possibly the last meaningful installment of Steph vs. LeBron. There's a lot on the line for both teams, in trying to determine what the teams look like next season. Should be a lot of fun, and it starts on Tuesday with a game the Lakers will be pushing to win, because they will never be as well rested as they are in Game 1. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky, with Cyrus Saatsaz and Kylen Mills. SEGMENT 1: This series should be a banger. Where are the Warriors right now, as a team? SEGMENT 2: Burning questions about the Lakers from the Warriors crew. SEGMENT 3: Predictions. Who wins and why?
