The success of a business depends hugely on the employees. If they aren't committed to the goals and don't put in their best efforts, achieving success can be extremely difficult and maybe impossible. Even if you have achieved considerable success till now, sustaining it in the future and taking your business to the next level is a whole different ballgame. You need to be able to manage the people working for you in the best way possible to make sure they are working towards your business' success. You need to make sure each and every employee is motivated and working towards the end goal. This requires you to share your vision for the company with them. It is easier said than done though. There are many things you need to do to improve your management skills and manage your employees in a better way. Let's explore 8 tips that can help you manage people better. 1. Define Values Every business, regardless of scale, needs to have a set of clearly defined values. The values for your business are basically a code your employees follow when performing their day-to-day functions. Not outlining the values of your business causes confusion. The employees are not clear about what to do when faced with any given situation. Defining values also makes your expectations of the employees known to them. That way, they can perform to the standards you expect of them. For instance, the punishment for failure to complete work or violating a business policy should be made clear so that the employees don't step out of line. 2. Build Teams Some entrepreneurs use the strategy of pitting employees against each other and creating a competitive atmosphere. The idea behind it is clear that employees get motivated to work hard and outperform their peers. However, for a company, it is better that the people learn to work together than on their own. You can think of your business as a well-oiled machine. All the cogs need to be working perfectly and more importantly, working in tandem to make the machine work. 3. Foster Accountability Accountability is a crucial ingredient in a work environment. You need to foster accountability and hold your employees responsible for their work. This results in them taking on more responsibility and makes your job of managing them easier. As you know, added responsibility can be a source of motivation for the employees. They begin feeling that you are relying on them to play a major role in the success of your business. To create the right environment for accountability, you need to outline your expectations clearly. Then, if the employee doesn't fulfill your expectations, you can reprimand them. All good business owners do allow a grace period for the employee to rectify the situation but don't make it too extensive or it can cause other employees to not take you seriously. Take the necessary action at the appropriate time. However, don't try to make an example of the employee just for the sake of intimidating others. 4. Rewards & Punishments The best tools you have in your arsenal for managing people are rewards and punishments. The fear of punishment and the aspiration of a reward are the foremost sources of motivation for most people. You need to use them according to the situation. Make sure there is a balance between rewards and punishments. None of your employees should feel unfairly treated. Using rewards and punishments perfectly can help in managing people better. Punishments are often linked to low productivity and employee morale but can eventually get the work done. Rewards and punishments both can be categorized under tangible and intangible. For instance, simply pestering an employee until they complete their work is an example of intangible punishment. On the other hand, if you issue a written notice or cut the salary of the employee, it becomes a tangible punishment. Same goes as far as rewards are concerned. A pat on the back or a word of encouragement is an intangible reward. Giving someone a bonus (which can be money and a gift certificate for a nice dinner for two, for example) is something tangible. 5. Communicate Open up channels of communication with your employees. Inform them about anything concerning them. Keep them in the loop regarding news or data which may affect their performance. Most importantly, communicate exactly what you expect of them. In short, you should ensure the communication in your company is two-way, not just from you to the employees. 6. Zero-Tolerance While ruling with an iron fist often results in workers losing motivation, this does not mean you let them get away with everything. You need to implement a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct, complacency, and failure to respect the company values. This is extremely important. Once you have shown your employees that you are not going to stand for anyone stepping out of line, they are not likely to attempt to do something like that in the future. 7. Fight Your Ego As a business owner, keeping your ego in check is extremely important for the growth of your business. Often you will find that your decisions are clouded by your ego at being the person in charge. It is true that your employees are working for you and you are directing them. This does not allow you the freedom to treat them in any way you want. Respect your employees and acknowledge the fact that it is because of them that your business is successful. 8. Be a Role Model Last, but not the least, you must be a role model for your employees. This is again something that sounds easy yet is anything but. Make sure you follow the code of values to the letter and make yourself accountable. Admit your mistakes and shortcomings and accept when you are in the wrong. Being a fair and just leader of your business requires you to behave exactly the way you expect others to behave. These are some of the most effective tips you can follow for becoming a better leader. If you do get value from these Podcasts, please take a minute to leave me a short review. Getting your offline business online can be overwhelming and confusing. You find yourself asking questions such as: Do I really need to be on Facebook? What's the craze over Twitter and how does it help my business? Do I really need a blog and how do I find the time to write blog posts when I'm trying to run my business? These questions, along with many more, are common and important questions to ask when taking your offline business online. This episode is meant to help answer some of your questions and provide guidance for navigating the world of online marketing. Tip 1: The Internet is a Community Realize that the internet is a community and this concept will help you grasp the most important piece of mastering online marketing. You are not here to sell. You are a part of a worldwide community who has valuable solutions to offer your ideal client and prospect community. Tip 2: Keep it Real Internet users can smell “fake” a mile away. Sleazy sales tactics don't work and no, people don't care what you had for lunch. What people do want is valuable information and resources! Post free tips - provide links to additional resources like key tips and articles on your blog, podcasts, and videos - announce special promotions. Keep it real, keep it high-value. Tip 3: Social Networking No-No's If you're new to social networking, it's very easy to make a mistake and lose the trust of your tribe forever. In the beginning, do more listening than talking. Think of yourself as the new kid on the block.... learn the ropes, observe, and take notes. Connect with people from various industries and pay close attention to those people who have huge followings (they're probably doing something right). Model their successes, and steer clear of the social networking no-no's. Tip 4: Your Website Isn't Just a Website Just a few short years ago, websites were horrible to look at: flashing banners, hot pink backgrounds, hard-to-read text, and bad headshots. Today, your website isn't just a website - it's a presence. It's your brand. It's your business. It's YOU. It must be engaging, informative and offer massive value without cheesy sales tactics. Tip 5: Consistency is Key Because the internet is a community, you must be willing to consistently participate. Tweeting once per month isn't going to get you noticed. Online marketing should be part of your everyday marketing plan. A few minutes per day (at least 4 days per week) is the quickest, easiest and cheapest way to connect with over 1 billion people - some of whom I'm sure are your ideal prospects. Your assistant can help by taking existing information and consistently put it out there for you. Tip 6: Expand Your Market While you may not be interested in becoming the next Mari Smith, there are plenty of people, worldwide, who recognize the power of the internet to expand their market and grow their business. Why would you not access a resource that provides you with free or low-cost ways to reach more of your ideal prospects? Leverage the resources available to you! Tip 7: Get the Inside Scoop on What People Really Want The internet provides a perfect way for you to find out exactly what your market wants. It's as simple as joining LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter - and then listening to what people are saying. What frustrates them? What products or programs are they raving about? Who are they following - and interacting with? You'll find that people are generally brutally honest about their experiences - and that helps you help them. Tip 8: Find an Untapped Resource of Allies, Partners, and Clients You'll quickly find that there is an endless supply of people who are willing to spread the word about high-quality products and services to their friends and family. If you have a great product or service, you'll probably find people who are willing to sing your praises. You'll also likely find unexpected joint-venture partners, affiliates and clients! Tip 9: Reach More People with Less Effort Person-to-person networking is effective, but it can be extremely time-consuming. The obvious benefit to getting your business online is the ability to reach mass amounts of prospective clients. This isn't to completely rule out the value of live networking events, rather online marketing should be utilized as a complement to person-to-person marketing. Regardless of the stage of your business, it needs to have an internet presence. Remember, a presence goes beyond a boring website - it truly is about having a presence online. The goal of internet marketing is to help you leverage resources that provide access to more ideal clients with less effort. By offering solid value and strong internet presence, you could be serving more clients without having to work harder. Prioritize these 9 ideas in the order of the ones you would like to implement first and that you feel will put you in the highest probability position to get even more business and serve more people. Most of us cringe when we hear the word “commitment” because we associate it with feelings of sacrifice. Our commitments fail because we get caught up in the struggle of trying to change where life seems to be taking us and where we want to go. Our every-day habits consume our thoughts - leaving no room for thoughts of why we started the process in the first place. The diet becomes a struggle between exercise and chocolate cake; the budget becomes a struggle between spending and saving, so on and so on. The struggle ends up consuming us and we give up trying to change because it's just too hard. What we thought would be efforts to lead us to a new life, end up being just a temporary change. We've tried before and failed again, and the conclusion comes down to a discouraged excuse - I just couldn't do it, I didn't have time, or it was too hard. The truth is making a successful commitment is nothing more than a making a choice to create a desired future outcome. Over the next 5 days we are going to explore the 5 tips on making successful commitments that produce results, so Tune in tomorrow. My husband has an expression, “It's okay to have a thought you don't express.” This can be very useful at times. I also believe it is okay to have thoughts you do express. Many times we are thinking something and we don't say it, and we should so we know the truth about the situation. We might be afraid to say what we are thinking for some unknown reason. You are just guessing on what is really going on in their minds without really knowing the truth. When someone is telling me that a certain situation occurred with a client and they don't know why or understand, I ask them if they asked them about it instead of just thinking about asking them. Most times we role play how that would work and they then go back and talk to the person. It is really about the client and them wanting to do what's best for them – so why not ask and tell the truth about how you are feeling? So, the point is - stop being afraid of what might happen because what you think might happen might not actually happen. And how bad could it really be? What are you really afraid of? Chances are you will realize that would you're imagining is not only improbable, but not all that bad anyway. Tell the truth and let things go the way they will go. The truth isn't always easy, but the truth is almost always better for everyone involved. Some people have wondered, Can I succeed telling the truth? It is my believe that not only can you succeed by telling the truth, you can thrive telling the truth. The reason is that you will attract the ‘right' clients, who have lots of money, who can handle the truth, and prefer the truth. Telling the truth can actually give you a competitive advantage in a market glutted by people full of hot air. Most people fear nobody wants to hear the truth, but of course they do! And the ones who want to hear the truth will be your best and most lucrative clients. Most successful people respond to bare-bald-buck-naked facts, because most successful people got that way by remaining grounded in reality. How do you deal with lack of motivation for tasks that you dislike, yet must be done by you? There are only two ways to get motivated: push or pull. Push is when you're motivated into action by fear; pull is when you are motivated into action by desire. Ideally, you should always be motivated by positive reinforcement; that's when your desire pulls you forward. Although being motivated by push works some of the time, it is obviously driven by fear, which is a negative reinforcement - and the least desirable. Think of something that you recently procrastinated on and put off. Did you finally take action from fearing the outcome if you didn't take action or the excitement of desiring the outcome if you did take action? Which feeling - fear or desire - do you take action from most often? If you are motivated by desire most of the time - you're on the right track. However, if you answered fear, you probably frequently procrastinate on getting things done. This not only hurts your personal growth, it also can be devastating to your success. It could be due to the fear of the outcome, uncertainty or a lack of self-confidence. Work on your WHY to help you be motivated by your desire. Strategy #6 (and final strategy) to help you deal with difficult situations is: Be Realistic. Be realistic in what you can accomplish in any given amount of time. Although you'd like to think of yourself as Wonder Woman or Superman, there is a limit to what you can accomplish at any one time. Pushing yourself to do more than is physically possible will only create needless difficult situations and add to your stress. Set up realistic goals for accomplishing tasks, without forcing yourself into a whirlwind. Prioritize, create a schedule and stick to it. Using a timer can also help; place one on your desk and use it every day. If you're swamped at the end of the day, reprioritize the tasks for tomorrow before going to bed, so you can rest peacefully. You can overcome difficult strategies with ease just by making a few changes to the way you handle tasks. Once you identify strategies for dealing with difficult situations and implement them, you'll be prepared to handle just about any tough situation that's thrown your way. It's about focusing on the end result, breaking each task down into manageable steps, and altering the way you work to reach maximum productivity. Remember, when you're feeling overwhelmed, that is a sign to stop and evaluate the situation. Tough situations are best dealt with calm and objectiveness. If you are too emotionally involved, upset or angry, it may be best to let it go for the time being. Take time to think and reflect upon your desired outcome and form your conversation around that goal. If you are ready to address it in 15 minutes, great. If you need 24 hours, that's okay too. The important thing to remember is to follow these six strategies to help you achieve your end result - however, long it takes. Aim for what you want each and every day! Strategy #5 to help you deal with difficult situations is: Organize. Working in an unorganized environment can lead to havoc. It can lead to a big deflation in motivation and harbor nasty procrastination habits. Keeping an organized workspace will help you overcome difficult issues with ease, because your environment will not be contributing to the chaos. Develop the habit of filing papers in a defined area… like a file cabinet. Organize or eliminate all other items that are cluttering your workspace. Make it a point to tidy up your workspace before you head out each evening. A visually pleasing office will help you keep your composure even in a difficult situation. Strategy #4 to help you deal with difficult situations is: Take a Break. It may seem counterproductive to take a break when you're dealing with a tough situation, but taking a break can really make a difference in your productivity. When I say take a break, I'm suggesting you to get up and out of the office. Sitting at your desk during your break will do nothing to change your perspective. Meditate, go for a walk, or have a cup of tea. Stepping out of your office and temporarily changing your environment may just give you fresh perspective you need to finish up that project while remaining focused and calm. Strategy #3 to help you deal with difficult situations is: Vent if You Must. Being productive is a difficult task when you've bottled up your emotions and stress. If you find yourself unable to concentrate on the task at hand, give yourself a few moments to let the emotions come to the surface. Cry, scream, yell or go outside to run - whatever you need to do to regain your focus. Have your five minute ‘pity party' and put your Big Girl/Boy Pants on and deal with it! Be aware you are a leader, and your team will be watching. Be careful what you show in front of them, because they will most certainly feed off your state of calm or chaos. Seek guidance from a colleague, friend or significant other; they may have just the right advice for you to regain your focus. Business professionals are often juggling multiple stressful situations and if you let stress take over your life, you're going to burn out and lose passion for your business. Overcoming difficult issues with ease is an art that can be learned, simply by identifying effective strategies for dealing with difficult situations. Once you learn the basics, you can implement them, in any difficult situation, to help you reach your desired end result. Over the next 5 days we will explore 6 strategies to help you deal with difficult situations. Strategy #1 is: Take it One Step at a Time Approach your workload one step at a time. When you're juggling multiple hot issues, it's easy to get overwhelmed, but taking it one step at a time is one of the best strategies for dealing with difficult situations. Start with the most pressing issue, and then break it down into small manageable increments. Although you may be up against a deadline, it's important to keep things in perspective. Deal with the most pressing issues that cannot be delayed or postponed. The projects that can be delayed without much damage should be dealt with secondarily. Make phone calls to the necessary contact(s) to inform them the task will be slightly behind schedule. Apologize for the inconvenience and ensure the contact that you will deliver the task as soon as it is complete. If you feel you need a little accountability so you can accelerate your results because you know you are capable of more, I'm going to give you 3 ideas on different types of accountability that can work for you. Idea #1. Create an accountability group of at least three people. Most people, left to their own devices, will not take any action. Sometimes, it takes a personable accountability environment to get someone to take action. Build a supportive, yet firm accountability group and vow to hold each other accountable for actions as well as non-actions. Go to the group coaching section at https://www.accountabilitycoach.com/coaching/ and follow the guidelines. Idea #2. Search for existing Accountability Groups in your area. Do an internet keyword search for “accountability group,” or search Facebook or LinkedIn for additional group options. Idea #3. Explore what it's like to have an accountability coach and hear about past success stories. Visit https://www.accountabilitycoach.com/success-stories/ for more information. Leverage resources and people to help you put yourself in the highest probability position to achieve or exceed your goals. Tip 3 on how to help you resolve any issue around lack of motivation is: When You Can't Get Out of a Frump. People who are giddy 24/7 are a rare breed, and for most of us, we have days when we don't feel like doing what we're supposed to do, no matter how much we try to convince ourselves to tackle it. We try to get into the groove, but can't seem to rally the motivation. The more you try, the more frustrated you become, and that depletes any last spark of motivation you had. There will always be things that need to be done - even if you don't feel like doing them. If you can approach getting things done with the right perspective and motivation, they will be much easier to handle and you'll get them done much faster. As Peter Vidmar says, “To be an Olympic Champion you only need to work out two times. When you feel like it, and when you don't feel like it.” Action Step: If your day is stuck in a frump, the best thing to do for you and your business is to step away from it. Do what makes you happy so you can come back to getting things done with a clear focus and content heart. Go do something that feeds your soul and refuels your motivation. It can be anything you enjoy. Refueling your motivation is essential to your health and happiness, so when you're feeling empty, stop everything and do something for you. In addition, stay focused on the results! How does your choice to complete or procrastinate help or hurt your ability to achieve your goals? Asking this question will help bring clarity and reconnect you with your desire for achieving your goals, motivating you out of your slump. Tip 2 on how to help you resolve any issue around lack of motivation is: Steer Clear of “Drag-Me-Downs”. As an entrepreneur, you're different than the “average Joe” so to speak, who enjoys living in mediocrity. It's important to keep this in mind when you are exposed to people or places that drag you down or hold you back. They may be friends, family, peers, or places that are meaningful for you, but they drag you down, make you go back to thinking “small” or question your “deservedness” of your goals. Action Step: Limit your exposure to people or places that drag you down. Doing this doesn't make them less important and it certainly doesn't mean that they are not special to you, but as an entrepreneur, it's important that you stay motivated and positive because your success is riding on your ability to continually propel yourself forward. Tip 1 on how to help you resolve any issue around lack of motivation is: Motivation is Contagious. The best way to change how you approach getting things done, even if you don't enjoy the task, is to surround yourself with positive role models. We all know that the most successful entrepreneurs are pros at motivating themselves - and others. They have to be because when you're your own boss, there's no one to force you into action, so, they learn to do it themselves. Action Step: Find a successful entrepreneur who is a pro at self-motivation and learn as much as you can from them. Pay special attention to how they keep their motivation high and what they do to get themselves out of a slump. If you're sitting at your desk with a “To Do List” a mile long, but you can't find the motivation to tackle it, listen up. How is it that some days it feels as if you have enough motivation to conquer the world, yet other days, the smallest task seems to drain the life out of you? The answer is simple: motivation is fueled by your level of desire and commitment, and when your desire and commitment falls, so does your motivation. Have you ever been so engrossed by something you loved every second of it and lost track of all time? Your desire and commitment was so high, that time became non-existent, when in reality, several hours had passed. Think back to the days when you were in school. I'm sure there were subjects that you thoroughly enjoyed, and others you disliked. Which subjects were easier for you to complete? By far, the subjects that you enjoyed were easier because you were committed and had a desire to learn that subject. When you're committed, you're motivated. The good news is that your lack of motivation can be resolved with only a shift in thinking. Consider the three tips that I will discuss over the next 3 days. Strategy #5 of the 5 strategies to building a successful Accountability Culture is: Get Accountable. Accountability is a discipline, and therefore, it can be taught. And who better to teach employees than yourself? Being the business owner, you are in the perfect position to become a model for accountability your employees can see and emulate. The best way to do this is to resist the temptation to blame your employees for all your business' failures. Most business owners make the mistake of taking the credit for success but when failure comes a-knocking, they look for scapegoats. Being accountable requires you to own up to defeats as well and giving credit where credit is due. You are ultimately responsible for everything – success and failure as it is your business but acknowledging those who are helping your firm succeed is really important to your continued growth and success. Creating a successful accountability culture involves using the 5 strategies we talked about over the past 5 days. Implement them and you will observe a change in the way your employees work and the results they produce for your firm. It will make your job much easier and you can focus on taking your business to the next level of success. An accountability culture is built on some fundamental principles. You have to follow them to introduce the culture into your organization. Over the next 5 days we will discuss 5 strategies you can use to create a successful accountability culture in your firm. Let's start with Strategy #1, which is: Define Expectations You need to allow your employees the freedom to work the way they need to in order to produce their best results. Imposing a certain style of working on an employee could hinder the quality and quantity of their work. What you should do instead is to define the expectations you have of the employee. Make sure you clearly inform the employees about the way you expect them to conduct themselves and the rules they have to follow. Also, you need to provide them a realistic picture of what happens should they fail in their job. From there on, you can let the employees take full responsibility for the work they have been assigned, with the accountability measures fully in place. The Accountability Minute:Business Acceleration|Productivity
Accountability is one of the basic disciplines of doing business and increasing success. Yet, organizations often find it next to impossible to create a successful accountability culture. Companies that do manage to have high levels of accountability also achieve greater success. The ones that aren't able to do so usually don't experience the growth or success they desire and wonder why. As a business owner, the benefits of creating a culture of accountability are quite evident, but sometimes you might find accountability to be elusive. Why Creating an Accountability Culture is Not Easy? The main reason why organizations fail to create a successful accountability culture is that the leaders and managers don't fully involve themselves in the process. The process of accountability has to start from the top and go all the way down. Else, the employees don't see the point of being held accountable for their positions if the top brass of the company is exempt from it (which shouldn't have to be the case but is). Business owners should set the standard by holding themselves accountable. Become a good role model for your employees to follow. Tip #7 to help you manage people even better is: Fight Your Ego As a business owner, keeping your ego in check is extremely important for the growth of your business. Often you will find that your decisions are clouded by your ego at being the person in charge. It is true that your employees are working for you and you are directing them. This does not allow you the freedom to treat them in any way you want. Respect your employees and acknowledge the fact that it is because of them that your business is successful. Tip #6 to help you manage people even better is: Zero-Tolerance While ruling with an iron fist often results in workers losing motivation, this does not mean you let them get away with everything. You need to implement a zero tolerance policy for misconduct, complacency, and failure to respect the company values. This is extremely important. Once you have shown your employees that you are not going to stand for anyone stepping out of line, they are not likely to attempt to do something like that in the future. Tip #5 to help you manage people even better is: Communication Open up channels of communication with your employees. Inform them about anything concerning them. Keep them in the loop regarding news or data which may affect their performance. Most importantly, communicate exactly what you expect of them. In short, you should ensure the communication in your company is two-way, not just from you to the employees. Tune in tomorrow for Tip #6 to help you manage people even better. Tip #4 of the 8 tips to help you manage people even better is: Rewards & Punishments The best tools you have in your arsenal for managing people are rewards and punishments. An example is when you issue a written notice or cut the salary of the employee, it becomes a tangible punishment. As for rewards, a pat on the back or a word of encouragement is an intangible reward. Giving someone a bonus (which can me money and a gift certificate for a nice dinner for two, for example) is something tangible. Tune in tomorrow for Tip #5 to help you manage people even better. Tip #3 of the 8 tips to help you manage people even better is: Foster Accountability Accountability is a crucial ingredient in a work environment. Tip #2 of the 8 tips to help you manage people even better is: Build Teams Some entrepreneurs use the strategy of pitting employees against each other and creating a competitive atmosphere. The idea behind it is clear that employees get motivated to work hard and outperform their peers. However, for a company, it is better that the people learn to work together than on their own. You can think of your business as a well-oiled machine. All the cogs need to be working perfectly and more importantly, working in tandem to make the machine work. Tip #1 of the 8 tips to help you manage people even better is: Define Values Every business, regardless of scale, needs to have a set of clearly defined values. For instance, the punishment for failure to complete work or violating a business policy should be made clear so, that the employees don't step out of line. When you experience some negative talk swirling in your head, just cancel it out – sweep it out – delete it. Focus on the positive (and what you really want) and remember that your success is completely dependent upon you and you alone. Although you can allow talk from those around you to negatively affect your progress, no one can prevent you from achieving your goals. The determining factor is always and only your ability to hold true to your belief in yourself. There is always a way, so take a “no-excuses” approach to achieving your goals and you will achieve them. The way isn't necessarily apparent, and if you feel like you've hit a roadblock - get creative. You'd be surprised how you can come up with some creative and effective solutions when you think outside the box, so to speak. The idea is to maintain an element of creativity when coming up with solutions, so you are constantly expanding your belief system. Reason #3 on why Beck and Call is NOT a better business is: It's Impossible to Maintain Peace and Balance. If you're constantly juggling unreasonable client expectations, it will be impossible to maintain any sense of peace and balance in your personal or professional life. You may feel like you're sacrificing your personal life for your business, or the important professional tasks that cannot be completed because you're catering to an overly-demanding client. At some point, hopefully before total burnout, you learn to recognize what's really important: sometimes saying “no” is the best thing. It's vital to learn to say “no” to over-delivering on services clients have not paid for; “no” to things you do more out of obligation rather than joy; “no” to things that consume your schedule leaving little or no down time or freedom to do what you truly want and love to do. When you've overextended yourself too far, the only way to regain a sense of peace and balance is to say “no.” (You can always say ‘yes' later.) You're not alone. It's common for business owners to find difficulty in saying no, especially to their clients. Clients are necessary, but you do not have to sell your soul to win their business. You do not have to be at their beck-and-call to earn their approval. You only need focus on delivering the best service and what you promised to deliver. Establish client boundaries that support your personal definition of peace and balance. What works best for you? However that looks, design client boundaries to support your personal and professional life - and the success of your business. Deliver what the client agreed to pay for - no more, no less - and strive to deliver your absolute best each and every time - that's good business practice. Reason #2 on why Beck and Call is NOT a better business is: It's Impossible to Effectively Manage Your Business. Imagine how effectively you can manage your business when you're struggling to meet multiple demands of multiple clients? Instead of having time to focus on building your business, you'll be struggling just to maintain it. That's no way to run your business. You know you're NOT effectively running your business (it's actually running you) when: • You become exhausted and resentful of demanding clients (and eventually become resentful of your business, which detracts from your path of success). • Highly demanding clients without a ceiling on expectations are impossible to please (and miserable to work with). • Clients with irrational or unreasonable expectations never provide glowing business reviews (they're often negative and damage your professional reputation). • You must have time to focus on other areas of your business other than client service (like finding and signing on prospective clients). • Instead of creating a straight path to success, you're running yourself (and your business) into the ground. If a client requests a service or special attention, offer an additional service or upgraded package in which the client has the option to pay for that additional service. By honoring the ground rules you establish, you honor yourself, the value of your service, as well as the investment your client makes. The time to implement a strategy is now! The Leaders role in strategy making: We all have a voice in strategy-making, as well as greater latitude to respond opportunistically to developing conditions. In the past, strategic thinking was generally reserved to closed-door meetings with upper management. This method employs feedback with lower-level management, who has direct contact with employees and clients. Strategy making: Sees strategy and change as inescapably linked and assumes that finding new strategic options and implementing them successfully is harder and more important than evaluating them. This rule puts ideas into action and places the importance of the application rather than extensive and time-consuming evaluation before action. Change is happening all the time, so the time to implement the strategy is now – not later – so you can capitalize on the benefits. Applying Strategic Thinking practices to your business will accelerate your success by allowing a crystal clear focus to drive daily tasks - for you and your team. The Accountability Coach: Business Acceleration|Productivity
The Accountability Coach: Business Acceleration|Productivity
The important thing to remember when handling demanding clients is to take sole responsibility for establishing and managing their expectations. Manage them effectively - and everyone will remain on the same page and walk away satisfied. Fail to manage them effectively - and you'll end up with some level of conflict (however minor or severe). Clients will follow your lead; they will be however demanding or easy-going as your client boundaries dictates, and it's best to establish those boundaries before the contract is signed. 1. Establish Rules from the Get-Go Establishing rules from the get-go is ideal and will help ensure a positive client relationship. Ideally, all projects should be secured with a firm contract (that protects and supports you and your client) before any money is exchanged or any work commences. This not only ensures everyone is on the same page from the very beginning of a new relationship, it helps reduce the chances of possible conflict at any time during the project. If you've been doing business without any client boundaries in place, it's best if you do not take on any additional clients until you establish a basic contract or service agreement. If you've never used contracts, approach it from this angle: • What are you clear on delivering and not delivering? • What problems or issues have you run into in the past? • How could you design your contract or service agreement to avoid those problems and issues in the future? • What are the expectations they can expect from you and you from them? You may also want to consider what you would like to do and how you would like to direct the outcome of future projects before you design the program. For example, if you design a program that makes you miserable, it's going to be near impossible to create a positive experience for your clients. On the other hand, if you could design the program - and direct the outcome should problems arise - how would you like to do that and how would it best be done? (Be clear on what you're willing and not willing to do.) If you're just starting out in business or you're new to a specific industry, it can be difficult to establish rules when you're not always sure what exactly will be required. That's okay. In the beginning, you'll have to feel your way through, client by client, until you gain complete clarity. The best advice would be: don't do anything in the beginning that you are not willing to continue throughout your client relationship and/or for future clients - although sometimes that may be hard to know in the beginning. The internet has many resources that can be found to help you in many situations. Communication is very important to any successful relationship. Tell the truth, succinctly and directly, and in a way that is all about them. As an example, if you're not willing to work late hours or weekends, set your availability strictly to normal business hours, Monday through Friday (or Tuesday through Thursday). If you prefer clients do not have access to your cell phone, set up a business line with a virtual receptionist or automated voice mail that you check 2 to 3 times per day. 2. What to Do When You Change the Rules Mid-Game If you need to change the rules mid-game, be flexible. Remember that expectations were set in motion from the onset and changing them could lead to conflict. If you must change the rules mid-game, get clear on: 1) What the client wants and expects 2) Specifics of the agreement that must be adjusted 3) Specifics of the agreement where you are flexible 4) Specific ways you will meet/exceed client expectations, even with contract adjustments. Clarify these terms as clearly as possible before you arrange a phone conversation with the client. If you are unclear about any terms, clarify them before discussing “changing the rules.” Remember, the biggest trigger to conflict is not properly managing and meeting client expectations. If you know what the client ultimately desires, and the changes that must occur, then you know how to craft your conversation to reach a mutual agreement. 3. Handling Objections and Conflict If client objections arise mid-project there are only three points to clarify and resolve conflict: 1. What does the client want or expect 2. What are you willing to do (and not do) 3. How can you meet/exceed client expectations while still honoring what you are willing (and not willing) to do Arrange an in-person or phone conversation with client to review details and reach mutual agreement and follow up with details in writing (addendum) that requires signatures of all parties involved. Don't get caught in the drama of he said-she said because it doesn't really matter who said what. It only matters that you honor your contractual agreements while meeting or exceeding your client's expectations. Don't take conflict personally. It's not usually a personal attack - it's usually just a symptom of a breakdown in communication and/or a lack of detailed expectation. Use objections and conflicts as springboards to refine future agreements and contracts that better protect all parties and eliminate the possibility of conflict. 4. Consult an Attorney Not surprisingly, the best way to establishing and managing client boundaries is to consult a legal professional who can customize legal agreements for your specific business and industry. A well-crafted agreement will provide protection for you and your clients and establish a solid foundation of expectations, that should they be misunderstood, can be quickly and easily resolved. You don't need to have the attorney involved to create a new agreement with every new client per se. Having a basic agreement or several basic agreements based on your business and what you offer are typically enough to use with any new client you work with. Above all, keep in mind that your business will evolve as you do. Each new client relationship or project is an opportunity to clarify the desired ideal. To aid in this process, complete an objective review of each client relationship or project upon completion, by creating a simple Likes and Dislikes List, outlining specific aspects you liked or disliked at various stages of the relationship or project. Consider having a ‘debrief' session after each project is completed to continue to enhance your processes with clients. Set up standards or procedures that can be applied to future contracts and will minimize the “dislikes” while maximizing the “likes.” If you do get value from these Podcasts, please take a minute to leave me a short review. You have what they need! So, how do you get them to realize that you are the solution to what they are looking for, so they can be even more successful? Here are 5 steps for inspiring clients to want to work with you. It's a win-win for everyone. Step 1: Get Them Talking First and foremost, make the conversation about them. Take the focus off “getting the sale” and instead use this time together to evaluate if you are the best person to assist them. Remember, you don't want to work with anyone; you want to work ideal clients. Although you will be using this initial time together to evaluate if you want to work with them, keep the conversation focused on the prospective client. What is their current biggest struggle or challenge? What is their most immediate or long-term goal? What kind of support or guidance are they looking for? Step 2: Connect Them to Their Current Pain There must be a starting point where you help the prospective client see where they are right now. In other words, they must know where they are right now before they can receive guidance to get where they want to go. From there, it's important to remember that there are only ever two driving forces behind customers and clients who sign up: 1) Reducing/Eliminating pain or 2) Increasing pleasure The first step in inspiring them to work with you (assuming they are an ideal client and you want to work with them) is to help them feel their current pain. Get them talking about their biggest struggle or challenge - help them connect to the discomfort - and then lead them through Step 3. Step 3: Inspire Them to Imagine Future Possibilities Help them see that what they desire is possible - and that you can assist them in achieving it. Get them talking about their immediate and long-term goal(s) - asking how they feel imagining the real possibilities of their future. Reassure them that achieving any goal is simply a step-by-step process of “right steps” - and that you can successfully guide them through the process with greater ease and improved results. Step 4: Explain How You Can Help Them Go deeper into detail of how you can help them reduce their pain/increase their pleasure and achieve their goals. Emphasize in this step why you're the best person to assist them in this process, by detailing a brief overview of the steps involved. (Don't give too much away.) Step 5: Paint the Bridge The final stage to inspiring clients to work with you is to paint the bridge. This is where you connect the dots by reviewing what you've discussed thus far. (If you are unclear about any information discussed, this is a good time to ask the prospective clients questions to clarify before you proceed with reviewing. You may also want to invite the prospect to share any last thoughts or ask questions they feel are important for you to know, before you proceed.) The key in Step 5 is to accurately recap: 1) Their current pain, 2) Immediate or future goal(s), 3) Reassure them the goal is possible (if it's unrealistic, hint at how you can help craft a revised, attainable goal), and finally, 4) How you can effectively support them throughout the process and guide them to achieving their goals. Demonstrate that you understand, highlight your valuable expertise (and how it makes the process easier!) and instruct them how to sign up. Remember, you are the bridge to help them get from where they are to where they want to be. If you want to understand how to effectively brand your name, you first need to comprehend the basics of business branding. Business branding isn't a complicated process, but the success of your business branding relies on the relevance, quality and consistency of its design. Most business owners fall short when branding their business because they try to overcomplicate the process. However, if you follow the basics of business branding and resist the temptation to lose the focus of the message, you should be well on your way towards creating an effective brand. The most important basic factor in branding your business is conveying a message. You only have a few seconds to capture the attention of potential clients, and in those few seconds, your brand must clearly convey several points. Make those few precious seconds count by making it easy for your audience to comprehend your specialty with just a glance. Stick to these 4 Basic Rules of Business Branding and watch your business grow. Business Branding Rule #1: Choose colors wisely It may be your desire to choose colors that are most appealing to suit your personal taste, but they may not always be the most ideal for the success of your business. Advertising and marketing firms understand the emotions that colors convey and always choose the colors of their marketing carefully. Here's a quick reference for the emotions conveyed by common colors. Red: Very emotionally intense color. Associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. Use it as an accent color to stimulate people to make quick decisions. Orange: To the human eye, orange is a very hot color, so it gives the sensation of heat. Represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation. Use it to catch attention and highlight the most important elements of your design. Yellow: Yellow is the color of sunshine and produces a warming effect. It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy. Yellow is an unstable and spontaneous color, so avoid using yellow if you want to suggest stability and safety. Green: Symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety and has great healing power. Dark green is also commonly associated with money. Blue: Blue is the color of the sky and sea. It is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven. Avoid using blue when promoting food and cooking, because blue suppresses appetite. Purple: Symbolizes power, nobility, luxury, and ambition. Conveys wealth and extravagance and is associated with wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, mystery, and magic. Light purple is a good choice for a feminine design; use bright purple when promoting children's products. White: White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. Considered to be the color of perfection and conveys safety, purity, and cleanliness. Use white to suggest simplicity in high-tech products. Black: Associated with power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery. It usually carries a negative connotation, but denotes strength and authority. Combined with red or orange – other very powerful colors – black gives a very aggressive color scheme. Business Branding Rule #2: Let the logo do the talking In those crucial first few seconds of grabbing a client's attention, your logo must convey a clear, concise message that is easily understood. For example, if you fix computers, consider including an image of computer and stethoscope to convey that you're a computer doctor. Or, if you own a hair salon include an image of old-fashioned vanity lights and shears. Get the idea? The key is to identify at least one tangible icon that represents your business. The slogan should do the talking, while the logo is visually supportive of the message of the slogan. Business Branding Rule #3: Keep the slogan short and sweet Remember, you only have a few seconds to grab someone's attention. That means you have about two seconds to convey your message. The brain can process information at amazing speeds, and you'd be surprised by how much information can be conveyed in a split second - but only when it's done properly. Your slogan should always be attached to your logo, appearing directly below or next to the image. Make your slogan seven words or less - again short and sweet. Be sure the slogan says what you do without making it sound dry and uninteresting. For example, let's say you are a business coach. You could create a slogan that clearly and concisely conveys what you do - without having to provide a lengthy elevator speech. Here are some examples: • “The Small Business Guru” • “Take Your Business Global” • “The Home Business Coach” • The Referral Coach™ - already taken • The Strategic Coach™ - already taken • The Accountability Coach™ - already taken Business Branding Rule #4: Consistency is king Now that you have your logo and slogan, it's important to stay consistent. In every piece of marketing from your letterhead to advertising spots, the logo and slogan should always remain consistent. If you've hired a professional graphic artist or marketing firm to create your business look, they should have provided a digital file with your logo and slogan in a variety of positions and sizes (to accommodate different sizes and methods of media). Once your design is set, do not waver from it. Ideally, keep the logo/slogan layouts to no more than three different layouts to accommodate different media such as website, letterhead, and print and web advertisements. Make sure that both your print marketing and online marketing are consistent. The design and color scheme should remain true to your website theme. You'd be surprised how many people will type in your URL when directed through an advertisement, only to get thrown off by a website design that looks nothing like the ad. When you don't make the effort to keep your branding consistent you run the chance of confusing your potential clients - hence, losing revenue. Action Steps 1. Review Tip #1. Does your current logo reflect the type of image you want to portray? If not, hire a graphic designer to design a new logo and choose appropriate colors. Ask a friend or colleague for a recommendation, or go to Upwork.com or Guru.com to find a freelance graphic designer. Expect to pay $75 - $250 per logo. 2. Review Tip #3. Does your slogan really grab your ideal client? Put yourself in your client's place. What slogan would make you want to hire you? Refine it, if need be, to reflect the most focused message possible that invokes immediate action. 3. Review Tip #4. Does your marketing contain a consistent message and design? If not, follow your company logo (design and color) and make necessary adjustments to all marketing pieces, including your website. When it comes to making decisions that positively affect your life, there is only one thing to do. First, ask yourself how you feel about the opportunity. Do you get butterflies because you're excited or does your gut feel heavy or weighed down, as if you've got a feeling that something bad is about to happen? Sometimes it's hard to tell how you feel about something. Perhaps you feel great about it, but it's far outside your comfort zone so you have a lot of fear attached to it. Maybe your heart is telling you to go for it, but that means you'll be placing hardship on someone else – and that causes feelings of guilt. So how do you make important decisions that positively affect your life? Grab a pen and paper and go to a quiet place where you are happy, comfortable and will not be disturbed. At the top of the page, write the opportunity in question form. Start the question with, “Should I…..” or “Is it right for me to…” Read the question over a few times and then close your eyes. The purpose of this exercise is to remove visual distractions and move your attention from your head to your gut. Sit silently and wait to see what feelings come up for you. If your gut feels light and full of excitement, this may be an ideal opportunity for you. If your gut feels heavy, low or uncomfortable, it's probably not the right thing for you at this time – and you pretty much have your answer. Trusting your decision on emotion alone can be a lot to ask for most of us. Although we are each born with a sort of emotional navigational system to help us make the right choice, you will not find “Learning to Listen to Your Gut” as part of your curriculum in high school or college. Rarely are we taught how to listen to our emotional navigational system, so as adults we just have to use it until it becomes second nature. Your emotional navigational system is rooted in your “gut” and acts as the sort of sensitive, emotionally based female. Your brain on the other hand, is like the typical male: it is only concerned with logical reasoning. In order to rest easy with your decision, you have to satisfy both aspects of your being. I'm going to share 3 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Making Important Decisions. Question 1. Does this opportunity align with my short-term goals? Yes or No? If the answer is yes, continue to Question 2. If the answer is no, go no further. If it doesn't align with your short-term goals, it definitely won't align with your long-term goals. Remember, you are only going to take steps that lead you closer to your goals – no exceptions. Question 2. Does this align with my long-term goals? Yes or No? If the answer is yes, continue to Question 3. If the answer is no, this is not the right time to pursue this opportunity. Question 3. Am I making this decision from faith or fear? Faith or Fear? This is where you tie your feelings to your logical reasoning. What are you saying to yourself when you think about this opportunity – are your statements based on faith or fear? These are not necessarily things you are saying aloud – these may be thoughts running around in your head. Here are a few examples. Statements based on faith “I'm not sure how this will come together, but I know and believe it will work.” “I've been waiting my whole life for an opportunity like this.” “I'm a little nervous, but I know I can do it!” Statements based on fear “If I don't make this work, I could lose everything.” “I've got to find a way to take care of my family, I hope this works.” “I'm desperate; I'll take anything I can get.” See the difference? Faith statements are based in words like, “I know I can – I know it will work.” Fear statements are based in words like, “I'm desperate – I could lose everything.” Never, ever make important decisions from fear. If you cannot find a way to feel good about the opportunity, let it go. An opportunity that is a better fit will come along. Decision-making should always explore both emotional and logical aspects to get the full picture. The trick is learning to distinguish between your feelings and justifications, and then trust that you made the right decision. Next time you have an important decision to make, ask yourself these three questions to help you make the right choice for your success. The Accountability Coach: Business Acceleration|Productivity
As a business owner, there are things you must do in order to accomplish your goals so you can have the kind of business and life you have dreamed of having. From managing a team to handling clients - and everything in between - it can be easy to lose complete control of your day. We all have the same 24 hours available each day; it's how we chose to use those 24 hours that's makes the difference. Meetings, client services, and a To-Do List a mile long are frequent daily tasks in the world of running a business. The key is find an effective way to handle our daily routine to stay focused and on track to achieve your goals in the shortest amount of time and the least amount of effort. Tip #1: Break Goals Down in to Daily Action Steps - and Track Them Somewhere between running a business and having a personal life, it's not uncommon for our goals to fall by the wayside. If you are not paying attention to your goals on a daily basis, you're probably taking the long way around. Break goals down into daily action steps and put them into your daily calendar/diary/planner. Those action steps should be labeled high priority and handled as early on in the day as possible, or at the best time that leads to the best result. No excuses. Tip #2: Remove Distractions and Interruptions from Your Life Wasting time on low priority tasks is one of the most common sources of interrupting your success. Email - texting - social media - internet surfing - personal phone calls - chatting - etc. are time wasters for many of us. Work hours should be reserved for work. Close email and internet outside specific time blocks. Turn off the ringer on your phone or filter calls through a team member. Remove paperwork that you are not currently working on from your sight. Create a system that works best for you - and stick to it. Consistent execution of new habits that put you in the highest probability position to make better progress, so you can create the business and life you want. Tip #3: Be Aware of Sabotaging Habits No one is ever completely free of self-sabotaging habits, which is why it's important to be aware of your tendencies. When you are aware of your sabotaging habits, you can easily spot them - and stop them - from distracting you from your success. Whether you create procrastination, overwhelm, emotional crisis, physical exhaustion, relationship drama - or a host of other common habits - you're creating self-sabotage. Achieving your goals becomes a lot easier when you can spot troublesome habits, and consciously and quickly get yourself back on track. Tip #4: Get Clear on the Why When you get clear on why you're working on any particular task, you can intellectually grasp whether you really need to be doing it at all or having someone else do it. Ask yourself, “Why am I doing ___________________ (insert task)?” If your answer isn't a good enough why, you know you shouldn't be spending your valuable time on it. Tip #5: Chunk Like-Tasks Together Prep time and pre-task setup can eat up huge amounts of your time, so chunk like-tasks together. Another benefit to chunking? Reducing the “scatter-brain” effect. Multi-tasking and jumping between tasks reduces your brain's ability to maintain focus, effectiveness and efficiency. Examples of chunking your time include: Listening to voicemail/returning important phone calls - reading emails/replying to urgent inquiries – making prospecting calls – seeing clients in your office – creating marketing materials - coordinating off-site meetings with other appointments/errands - etc. Along this same line of thinking, consider scheduling time to really prepare for the meeting on your calendar (5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes). Also, schedule time after your meeting to complete any actions you need to so you don't have to try and remember them later in the day, two days later, or at the end of the week. Get things done and the move on to the next meeting with a clear head for that meeting. Tip #6: Create a Block Schedule Create hour blocks in your workday where you focus on a single task or a chunk of like-tasks. During that block of time, nothing else gets your attention, except the task or tasks in front of you. At the end of the block (1, 2, 3 or 4 hours) whatever was on your calendar is now finished. Tip #7: Live Life By Appointment Only! When someone calls in, have your assistant take a complete and in-depth message, and schedule a time you will return the call. I have never heard of anyone who says the life ‘phone tag.' So, stop phone tag! Meet with your assistant and other team members by appointment only to reduce interruptions. As much as possible, live your life by face-to-face or phone appointments only. You'll be amazed at how much more efficient you are by applying this one concept. Tip #8: Ready-Set-Go! For intense task completion, use a timer and set it for 5, 10, 15, 20 or 30 minutes. Using a timer allows you to create a game or healthy competition against the clock - giving your focus and energy an edge. You'd be surprised how much you can accomplish when you create a fun or somewhat competitive environment. Tip #9: Do What You Do Best, Delegate the Rest You should only be focusing on the tasks that you complete with the greatest efficiency, effectiveness and results. Everything else should be delegated to a team member, assistant, or virtual assistant who produces the best results. Ask yourself, “Could someone else do what I'm doing, if I just assigned it to them, told them how or gave them a process to get it done?” Too many entrepreneurs I talk to hold on to things way too long just because they have always done them. Successful entrepreneurs are excellent delegators! Tip #10: Leverage Your Peak Energy Each person has their own unique time of the day when they are at their peak energy. Whether you're an early bird or night owl, tackle the tasks that require the most energy and focus to complete during your unique peak energy - you'll get more done in less time with optimal results. Ask yourself, “When is the best time to get the best result for the various activities you do each day?” Tip #11: Eat Healthy for Real Energy Being an entrepreneur requires real energy; sugar, caffeine, and processed foods only offer a false energy and the afternoon energy crash can be severe. Reduce or eliminate sugar, caffeine, and processed foods as much as possible, while boosting raw fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains to maintain steady and consistent high energy. Some studies suggest having a small snack/meal every 2-3 hours. Review these 11 tips and decide which ones you will implement first for even greater success. My hope for our time together is that you got value and an idea or two that will help you be even more successful – personally and professionally. Have you found yourself in a revenue crunch with your business? Generating revenue - fast - is your first priority, but how can you do that when your marketing budget is small or nonexistent. At one time or another, every business owner has stumbled across this same challenge. The challenge being, how do you boost revenue when you have none to spend? Making money doesn't always take money. These 4 Bootstrapping Marketing Ideas will help you to boost revenue, fast. Bootstrap Marketing Tip #1: Reach Out To Past Clients We've all heard the business adage: attaining the business of new clients far outweighs the cost (expenses, time, and effort) of attaining repeat business of existing clients. Reaching out to past clients via phone or email is one of the fastest ways to boost revenue easily. Action: Pick up the phone. Call your past clients and remind them you are here to help them in whatever way you can. You don't need to hard-sell…just extend a genuine offer of service that you think will benefit them in their business and/or life. Bootstrap Marketing Tip #2: Create a Solution This is the time to get back to the basics: How can you solve your clients' problem(s)? Identify their biggest point of pain or challenge - and create a solution. Bootstrap Marketing Tip #3: Everyone Loves a Sale Everyone loves to save money; to feel like they are receiving even more value than what they are spending. To boost revenue, offer a 10% - 20% discount on services or programs, while offering deeper discounts (25% - 50%) on passive income items like products. Action: When designed properly, sales will not sacrifice your profits. Generally speaking, offer minimal or moderate discounts (10% - 20%) on high-cost items like services and programs, while offering deeper discounts (25% - 50%) on passive income items like books, ebooks and other strictly passive income items. Make sure to have the sale for a specific period of time to get people to act quickly to get the ‘deal' before it ends. Bootstrap Marketing Tip #4: Leverage Free Networking Resources Of all business challenges, leveraging the right resources at the right time is an endless refining process. Action: You never know where your next client will come from. Instead of worrying about being “sales-y” to the people in your personal life, approach connections with people as an opportunity to be of service. Genuinely engage in conversations without being pushy. Find out how you can help them - and be a good listener. Take the “sale” out of it…build the relationship first. Relationships are key to a successful business... Remember, you don't always have to spend money to make money. There are thousands of ways you can market your services without spending a dime - these are just a few examples. Above all, keep in mind that marketing is a 24/7, 365 days per year part of running your own business. One of the biggest mistakes business owners make is stopping the marketing process once they find clients. The key must be to market continually, even when you have clients, so you don't find yourself backed into a corner, so to speak. You are as much a marketer, as you are a business owner. You must get over being shy or reluctant about talking about your business. Get off the ‘rollercoaster ride' and smooth out your revenue stream so it is a consistent incoming flow of ‘green.' My hope for our time together is that you got value and an idea or two that will help you be even more successful – personally and professionally. You set goals, yet you don't achieve them. Time and time again you find yourself stopping midway between the start and finish lines. You start off running out of the gate, enthused and driven to make a difference this time, but each time, something derails you from sticking to the game plan. It's the classic paradox of Dreamer vs. Doer. As you know, my Excuses Don't Count; Results Rule (https://www.accountabilitycoach.com/excuses-dont-count-results-rule-book/) philosophy is the basis for my coaching business because excuses are never the real reason you stop short of your goals. No, the real reason is something entirely different. So, what's the real reason behind all those excuses you make? You are simply not willing to do what it takes to achieve your goals. You just don't want what you say you want badly enough to actually do what it takes. This is the real reason, and the only thing, stopping you from achieving your goals. Plain and simple. Commitment is what separates the dreamer from the doer. No matter what the nature of the excuse is the only reason you stop short of achieving your goal is because the desire to do whatever it takes to achieve the goal isn't strong enough. In other words - you don't want it bad enough to commit to being a doer. If you're tired of start-stop goal setting, here are some tips for helping you understand the reasons behind not wanting it bad enough: The Payoff Isn't High Enough Sometimes the payoff (future benefit) of goal achievement isn't enough to maintain your motivation in the now. That last mile....that last lap…that last squat… another phone call to a prospect… it can be challenging to find the motivation from the payoff - especially when it isn't high enough. Your payoff should be so enticing that there is no question in your mind that you are sticking to your game plan. No questions, no excuses. You desire that payoff so deeply that you will to do whatever it takes to achieve your goal. Just being willing to do something doesn't mean you will actually do it. Flip The Payoff/Pain Coin If you simply cannot find a future payoff worth your commitment or high desire, flip the coin and focus on the current pain of remaining where you are. You can bet that at some point you will have to do what you don't feel like doing in order to get where you want to go. It is in those crucial moments where you must decide if you desire to remain a dreamer and become a doer. Whatever is not motivating you - flip the coin and focus on the contrasting factor. Payoff or Pain? Choose the motivating factor that helps you move from dreamer to doer. Your Current Pain Isn't Great Enough Perhaps you stop yourself from achieving your goals because your current pain is simply not great enough. The idea of achieving the goal incites your interest, but not your commitment. The end result sounds nice, and if you could wave a magic wand without having to do the work, you gladly would; but you're not so bad off. Here's how the internal conversation plays out: I'd like to lose those last 10 lbs., but I feel okay about my body the way it is. I'll starting worrying about when my pants quick fitting. Sure, I'd like more clients, but that means more calls, more times I have to ask for referrals, more networking, and more marketing - time and money I don't have. I'm getting by - I guess I'm doing okay. It's not so bad here. Do you want to be here - in this same place – tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, three years from now? Do you want to continue the start-stop game of self-sabotage? Do you want to negotiate your happiness? Or do you finally want to get on with it? Going from a dreamer to a doer isn't always cut-and-dry. It's up to you to become your own best motivator by paying attention to how you're feeling and leveraging it. If you're currently motivated by the positive feelings of a future payoff - go with it. On the other hand, if you're current motivation is the displeasure of a current pain - leverage it to get you moving. It's the difference between dreaming about a better life and doing something to create the kind of life you truly want and deserve. My hope for our time together is that you got value and an idea or two that will help you be even more successful – personally and professionally. The Accountability Coach: Business Acceleration|Productivity
Great marketing goes beyond traditional marketing strategies. We're entering a whole new era of online and offline marketing that allow you to market one-to-many for the best results. You don't need expensive marketing resources to produce great results - here's where you can get creative and have fun! Here are 10 No-Cost and Low-Cost Ways to Market Your Businesses. Tip #1: Reach Out To Strategic Partners Strategic Partners are a complement (not competition) to your business (as your business is to theirs). Provide an Ideal Client Description and ask if they know someone who is an ideal fit. If they do know someone who would benefit from working with you, ask them to pass along your contact information to the prospect. (Asking for the prospect's contact information - and contacting them directly - may not always be appropriate. Follow the Strategic Partner's client privacy policy before contacting the prospect.) Last but not least - return the favor. Tip #2: Develop Joint-Venture Projects Joint-Ventures are gaining popularity as we find (in a challenging economy) it's not only more effective, but sometimes necessary, to pool resources together. This marketing strategy accomplishes two goals: 1) Gets your business in front of a new market and 2) Allows opportunities for new or creative products or services you may have previously been unable to provide. *Choose Joint-Venture Partners wisely… once a partnership is formed, reputations will inevitably be tied to one another. Tip #3: Build a Community The power of the community deeply serves us, as we continue to recover from economic hardship. Create an in-person or virtual community where like-minded business owners can meet once a week to discuss marketing strategies that work or brainstorm new and innovative ways to attract ideal clients. Use your business brand or personal philosophy as an anchor to the community and you'll be providing what no one else can. Tip #4: Update Client Success Stories You may have client testimonials, but do you have updated their success stories? Contact clients who have worked with you and ask them to provide their latest success story by specifically tying at least one piece of their success to something they learned or were provided by your product, program, or service. The greater the success story - the greater the value that directly ties back to your business. Promote the updated testimonials and remember to put them on your website. Tip #5: Hold an Open House In-person networking is powerful! Host a lunch, happy hour or networking meeting at your home or office. Invite a small group of key people who can help you spread the word about an upcoming program/event or time-sensitive promotion. (“Key” people are colleagues, partners, friends, associates who have direct connections to your ideal clients.) You may want to consider asking these key people to bring other people who they think could benefit from your product or services to meet you in person. Tip #6: Leverage Your Resources Every aspect of your business from your voice mail to in-person networking should be highlighting reasons why people should be working with you. Share client success stories and current promotions year-round on/in/at: your website | outgoing voicemail message | email footer | social networking accounts (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter) | printed marketing materials | networking events | seminars and live events | business cards | articles | etc. Tip #6: Leverage The Internet While in-person networking remains one of the most powerful ways to connect with prospective clients, the leveraging power of the internet is undeniable. Thanks to the internet it is possible for you to transform your marketing plan from a one-to-one approach to one-to-many. Article marketing and social networking are just two powerful examples of how to market one-to-many online. Tip #8: Blog for Business A blog is an essential part of your website's ability to attract and keep the attention of your ideal prospects. Although the intention is to provide valuable information, you're actually doing much more than that: you're providing a valuable resource that boosts the Know, Like, Trust Factor of your clients - inspiring them to work with you. Take existing content from articles, podcasts, videos, etc. to create your blog posts. Your assistant can do this for you and post them on a regular basis so you don't have to spend a lot of time doing it yourself. Tip #9: Develop a Cross-Promotion Partnership Ask for help! Contact associates, colleagues and other high-quality contacts and offer to promote one of their upcoming events or program launches. Be sure their offer is a complement, not competition, to something you currently offer. (Offer a referral fee for added incentive!) Only then, ask them to return the favor, if they haven't already offered. Tip #10: Create Consistent Communication Creating a weekly e-newsletter is one of the easiest methods for creating consistent communication with your sphere of influence. The purpose of weekly communication is to consistently remain in front of your prospects. Provide quality information they will find helpful and useful, while creating an opportunity for your audience to Know-Like-Trust you through short stories, articles of value, interviews with other experts, or mentions of your personal or professional journey. Review these 10 ideas and choose to implement the ones that will have the biggest impact on you achieving your goals in the shortest time possible. Create a game plan and execute it for even greater success. My hope for our time together is that you got value and an idea or two that will help you be even more successful – personally and professionally.
