E., Bensmaia, S. J. Abstract: Manual interactions with objects are supported by tactile signals from the hand. This tactile feedback can be restored in brain-controlled bionic hands via intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of somatosensory cortex (S1). In ICMS-based tactile feedback, contact force can be signaled by modulating the stimulation intensity based on the output of force sensors on the bionic hand, which in turn modulates the perceived magnitude of the sensation. In the present study, we gauged the dynamic range and precision of ICMS-based force feedback in three human participants implanted with arrays of microelectrodes in S1. To this end, we measured the increases in sensation magnitude resulting from increases in ICMS amplitude and participant's ability to distinguish between different intensity levels. We then assessed whether we could improve the fidelity of this feedback by implementing 'biomimetic' ICMS-trains, designed to evoke patterns of neuronal activity that more closely mimic those in natural touch, and by delivering ICMS through multiple channels at once. We found that multi-channel biomimetic ICMS gives rise to stronger and more distinguishable sensations than does its single-channel counterpart. We conclude that multi-channel biomimetic ICMS conveys finely graded force feedback that more closely approximates the sensitivity conferred by natural touch. Copy rights belong to original authors. Abstract: Organisms adapt to seasonal changes in photoperiod and temperature to survive; however, the mechanisms by which these signals are integrated in the brain are poorly understood. We previously reported that EYES ABSENT (EYA) in Drosophila shows higher levels in cold temperature or short photoperiod, and genetic ablation of eya in the fly brain inhibits reproductive dormancy, suggesting that EYA promotes winter physiology. Nevertheless, the mechanisms by which EYA senses seasonal cues are unclear. Pigment-Dispersing Factor (PDF) is a neuropeptide important for photoentrainment and regulation of circadian output rhythms. Interestingly, PDF also regulates reproductive dormancy, suggesting that it may mediate the function of the circadian clock in modulating seasonal physiology. In this study, we investigated the role of PDF signaling in mediating the impact of EYA on seasonal biology. First, we subjected flies to different photoperiodic and temperature regimes and observed that PDF abundance is lower in cold and short days, compared to warm and long days. Interestingly, the response of PDF to seasonal cues is opposite of what was observed for EYA. We then determined the potential for PDF to convey seasonal cues and modulate EYA function in seasonality by assessing coexpression of EYA and PDF receptor. Our results indicated that PDF receptor (PDFR) is indeed coexpressed with EYA in the fly brain, including in the circadian clock neuronal network and neurons in the pars intercerebralis. We then manipulated PDF signaling in eya+ cells to show that PDF modulates seasonal adaptations in daily activity rhythm and ovary development via EYA-dependent and independent mechanisms. At the molecular level, manipulating PDF signaling impacted EYA protein abundance. Specifically, we showed that protein kinase A (PKA), an effector of PDF signaling, phosphorylates EYA and promotes its degradation. This explains the opposite responses of PDF and EYA abundance to changes in seasonal cues. In summary, our results support a model in which PDF signaling negatively modulates EYA levels to regulate seasonal physiology, linking the circadian clock to the modulation of seasonal adaptations. Abstract: Secreted semaphorin 3F (Sema3F) and semaphorin 3A (Sema3A) exhibit remarkably distinct effects on deep layer excitatory cortical pyramidal neurons; Sema3F mediates dendritic spine pruning, whereas Sema3A promotes the elaboration of basal dendrites. Sema3F and Sema3A signal through distinct holoreceptors that include neuropilin-2 (Nrp-2)/plexinA3 (PlexA3) and neuropilin-1 (Nrp-1)/PlexA4, respectively. We find that Nrp-2 and Nrp-1 are S-palmitoylated in cortical neurons and that palmitoylation of select Nrp-2 cysteines is required for its proper subcellular localization and also for Sema3F/Nrp-2-dependent dendritic spine pruning in cortical neurons, both in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, we show that the palmitoyl acyltransferase DHHC15 is required for Nrp-2 palmitoylation and Sema3F/Nrp-2-dependent dendritic spine pruning, but it is dispensable for Nrp-1 palmitoylation and Sema3A/Nrp-1-dependent basal dendritic elaboration. Therefore, palmitoyl acyltransferase-substrate specificity is essential for establishing compartmentalized neuronal structure and functional responses to extrinsic guidance cues. And the reasons are not simply that classics majors can code too. To the contrary, an authentic liberal education gives us not only truth, but also a ground upon which to stand. Many of our current social crises are rooted precisely in such a poverty: we mistrust much of our ability to know, and consequently we don't know much of what gives life purpose and meaning. Michael goes on to share four characteristics of a good liberal arts education. Fifteen people have been declared dead after a shooting in the Nomzamo informal settlement in Orlando West, Soweto. It's believed that the perpetrators arrived at the tavern and shot indiscriminately. Four people were also reportedly killed in Katlehong and Pietermaritzburg in similar circumstances. Anytime you talk to any of his fans, whether musicians or civilians, invariably they will speak of not one but two qualities that define his greatness.The first, predictably, is his extraordinary guitar playing. Considered by those in the know to be among this planet's greatest guitarists, his playing is simply miraculous, as it would take three musicians, or more, to do what Tommy does solo. Who else, for example, when playing “Day Tripper,” can lay down the rhythm part, dig into the riff and sing the melody all at once on just one acoustic guitar?Which brings us to the other aspect of his music always mentioned, and without which the first might not be as powerful or as infectiously appealing: the joy. Yes, joy. Because it's one thing to play these multi-dimensional arrangements flawlessly on an acoustic guitar. But to do it with that smile of the ages, that evidence of authentic, unbridled delight, is an irresistible invitation to feel his music as deeply as he does.“The joy, he says, “is there always because I'm chasing it through music. Seeing the surprise in peoples' eyes is worth living and working for… I can't help but play to the people with all my heart, which is overflowing with joy of being in that moment that I've worked all my life for. And here it is!”Although his expression is instrumental, he comes to the guitar much more like a vocalist, positively singing melodies through the strings. He inhabits the tunes he performs, delivering every nuance and turn of phrase. By age four, he got busy becoming a musician. His father, an engineer who loved music and musicians, brought home an electric guitar one day with the intention of finding out how it worked. Piece by piece, he took it apart to discover its secrets. But Tommy and his brother were much more interested in music than mechanics, so that when their dad was away at work, they'd surreptitiously sneak away with the guitar.Driven somewhat by sibling rivalry, they developed contests that were both fun and extremely educational. “We turned our backs to each other,” Tommy remembered, “and Phil would play a chord and I would have to say what the chord was, what the notes in it were.” It was competition which impacted his entire career, allowing him access to the rich interior architecture of songs. Though neither brother had any formal musical training, this self-schooling quickly transformed both into seriously sophisticated musicians.Though they assumed their father would be angry if he found out, which he did, they were wrong. He was surprised and thrilled his sons could play music. Soon their big brother Chris was enlisted to play drums, and with sister Veronica playing lap-steel, a family band was born. They joyously rocked hip guitar instrumentals such as “Apache” by The Shadows, featuring Hank Marvin on guitar, who both Phil and Tommy adored and emulated. They called themselves The Emmanuel Quartet. A. Peace-faking. A peace-faker avoids conflict at all cost. B. Peace-breaking. These people function more like skunks. C. Peace-making. Willing to candidly discuss conflict. Four Pathways To Peace 1. A private meeting (verse 15). Two important imperatives in this verse: Go and Show. This first step is to be “between you and him alone.” 1. Avoids shame for the person. 2. Minimizes misunderstandings. 3. Keeps you from hating the person. 4. The other person may not know they've offended you. 5. Limits gossip. Matthew 18:15 - I must go quietly. Ephesians 4:26 - I must do it quickly Matthew 7:5 – I must do it carefully 2. A private conference with witnesses (verse 16). Some Other Benefits To Having A Witness Or Two A. They can establish the facts B. They can observe C. May communicate the gravity of the situation D. They can keep things from escalating. E. Witnesses can remember and record what was said. 3. A public announcement to the church (verse 17a). Here are some reasons why we need to pursue this step: 1. Vindicates God's holiness 2. Purifies the church 3. Deters others from sinning 4. Conveys biblical love and a pathway for restoration 4. Public exclusion from the church (17b). 1. The promise of His power. 2. The promise of His presence. Let's Consider These Questions 1. Am I treating the other person I'm in conflict with as someone God loves? 2. Is my goal reconciliation or retaliation? 3. How's my attitude? 4. How willing am I to obey?

Abstract: Observation of object lifting allows updating of an internal object representation for object weight, in turn enabling accurate scaling of fingertip forces when lifting the same object. Here, we investigated whether lift observation also enables updating of an internal representation for an object's weight distribution. We asked participants to grasp and lift an inverted T-shaped manipulandum with interchangeable center of mass in turns with an actor. Participants were required to minimize object roll during lifting by generating an appropriate amount of compensatory torque (i.e. lift performance) and were allowed to place their fingertips at self-chosen locations. The center of mass changed unpredictably every third to sixth trial performed by the actor and participants were informed that they would always lift the same weight distribution as the actor. Participants observed either erroneous (i.e. object rolling towards its heavy side) or skilled (i.e. minimized object roll) lifts. Lifting performance after observation was compared to lifts without prior observation and to lifts after active lifting, which would provide haptic feedback about the weight distribution. Our results show that observing both skilled and erroneous lifts can convey an object's weight distribution as similarly as active lifting, resulting in altered digit positioning strategies. However, lift performance on novel weight distributions was not improved after observing skilled lifts and only partly after observing erroneous lifts. In conclusion, these findings suggest that although observing motor errors and skilled motor performance enables updating of digit positioning strategy, only observing lifting errors enables less-than-optimal changes in predictive motor control when lifting objects with complex intrinsic properties. Abstract: The central amygdala (CeA) is critically involved in a range of adaptive behaviors. In particular, the somatostatin-expressing (Sst+) neurons in the CeA are essential for classic fear conditioning. These neurons send long-range projections to several extra-amygdala targets, but the functions of these projections remain elusive. Here, we found in mice that a subset of Sst+ CeA neurons send projections to the globus pallidus external segment (GPe), and constitute essentially the entire GPe-projecting CeA population. Notably, chronic inhibition of GPe-projecting CeA neurons completely blocks auditory fear conditioning. These neurons are selectively excited by the unconditioned stimulus (US) during fear conditioning, and transient inactivation or activation of these neurons during US presentation impairs or promotes, respectively, fear learning. Our results suggest that a major function of Sst+ CeA neurons is to represent and convey US information through the CeA-GPe circuit, thereby instructing learning in fear conditioning. Today we are going to talk about Business Branding Rule #1 which is to, Choose colors wisely. It may be your desire to choose colors that are most appealing to suit your personal taste, but they may not always be the most ideal for the success of your business. Advertising and marketing firms understand the emotions that colors convey and always choose the colors of their marketing carefully. I'm going to share a quick reference for the emotions conveyed by common colors. Red: Very emotionally intense color. Associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. Use it as an accent color to stimulate people to make quick decisions. Orange: To the human eye, orange is a very hot color, so it gives the sensation of heat. Represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation. Use it to catch attention and highlight the most important elements of your design. Yellow: Yellow is the color of sunshine and produces a warming effect. It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy. Yellow is an unstable and spontaneous color, so avoid using yellow if you want to suggest stability and safety. Green: Symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety and has great healing power. Dark green is also commonly associated with money. Blue: Blue is the color of the sky and sea. It is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven. Avoid using blue when promoting food and cooking, because blue suppresses appetite. Purple: Symbolizes power, nobility, luxury, and ambition. Conveys wealth and extravagance and is associated with wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, mystery, and magic. Light purple is a good choice for a feminine design; use bright purple when promoting children's products. White: White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. Considered to be the color of perfection and conveys safety, purity, and cleanliness. Use white to suggest simplicity in high-tech products. Business branding isn't a complicated process, but the success of your business branding relies on the relevance, quality and consistency of its design. Most business professionals fall short when branding their business because they try to over complicate the process. However, if you follow the basics of business branding and resist the temptation to lose the focus of the message, you should be well on your way towards creating an effective brand. The most important basic factor in branding your business is conveying a message. You only have a few seconds to capture the attention of potential clients, and in those few seconds, your brand must clearly convey several points. Make those few precious seconds count by making it easy for your audience to comprehend your specialty with just a glance. Stick to these 4 Basic Rules of Business Branding and watch your business grow. Business Branding Rule #1: Choose colors wisely It may be your desire to choose colors that are most appealing to suit your personal taste, but they may not always be the most ideal for the success of your business. The slogan should do the talking, while the logo is visually supportive of the message of the slogan. Business Branding Rule #3: Keep the slogan short and sweet Remember, you only have a few seconds to grab someone's attention. That means you have about two seconds to convey your message. The brain can process information at amazing speeds, and you'd be surprised by how much information can be conveyed in a split second - but only when it's done properly. Your slogan should always be attached to your logo, appearing directly below or next to the image. Make your slogan seven words or less - again short and sweet. Be sure the slogan says what you do without making it sound dry and uninteresting. For example, let's say you are a business coach. You could create a slogan that clearly and concisely conveys what you do - without having to provide a lengthy elevator speech. Here are some examples: • “The Small Business Guru” • “Take Your Business Global” • “The Home Business Coach” • The Referral Coach™ - already taken • The Strategic Coach™ - already taken • The Accountability Coach™ - already taken Business Branding Rule #4: Consistency is king Now that you have your logo and slogan, it's important to stay consistent. In every piece of marketing from your letterhead to advertising spots, the logo and slogan should always remain consistent. If you've hired a professional graphic artist or marketing firm to create your business look, they should have provided a digital file with your logo and slogan in a variety of positions and sizes (to accommodate different sizes and methods of media). Once your design is set, do not waver from it. Ideally, keep the logo/slogan layouts to no more than three different layouts to accommodate different media such as website, letterhead, and print and web advertisements. Make sure that both your print marketing and online marketing are consistent. The design and color scheme should remain true to your website theme. You'd be surprised how many people will type in your URL when directed through an advertisement, only to get thrown off by a website design that looks nothing like the ad. When you don't make the effort to keep your branding consistent you run the chance of confusing your potential clients - hence, losing revenue. Action Steps 1. Review Tip #1. Does your current logo reflect the type of image you want to portray? If not, hire a graphic designer to design a new logo and choose appropriate colors. You only have a few seconds to capture the attention of potential clients, and in those few seconds, your brand must clearly convey several points. Make those few precious seconds count by making it easy for your audience to comprehend your specialty with just a glance. Stick to these 4 Basic Rules of Business Branding and watch your business grow. Business Branding Rule #1: Choose colors wisely It may be your desire to choose colors that are most appealing to suit your personal taste, but they may not always be the most ideal for the success of your business. Advertising and marketing firms understand the emotions that colors convey and always choose the colors of their marketing carefully. Here’s a quick reference for the emotions conveyed by common colors. Red: Very emotionally intense color. Associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. Use it as an accent color to stimulate people to make quick decisions. Orange: To the human eye, orange is a very hot color, so it gives the sensation of heat. Represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation. The slogan should do the talking, while the logo is visually supportive of the message of the slogan. Business Branding Rule #3: Keep the slogan short and sweet Remember, you only have a few seconds to grab someone’s attention. That means you have about two seconds to convey your message. The brain can process information at amazing speeds, and you’d be surprised by how much information can be conveyed in a split second - but only when it’s done properly. In every piece of marketing from your letterhead to advertising spots, the logo and slogan should always remain consistent. If you’ve hired a professional graphic artist or marketing firm to create your business look, they should have provided a digital file with your logo and slogan in a variety of positions and sizes (to accommodate different sizes and methods of media). Once your design is set, do not waver from it. Ideally, keep the logo/slogan layouts to no more than three different layouts to accommodate different media such as website, letterhead, and print and web advertisements. Make sure that both your print marketing and online marketing are consistent. The design and color scheme should remain true to your website theme. You’d be surprised how many people will type in your URL when directed through an advertisement, only to get thrown off by a website design that looks nothing like the ad. When you don’t make the effort to keep your branding consistent you run the chance of confusing your potential clients - hence, losing revenue. Action Steps 1. Review Tip #1. Stick to these 4 Basic Rules of Business Branding and watch your business grow. Business Branding Rule #1: Choose colors wisely It may be your desire to choose colors that are most appealing to suit your personal taste, but they may not always be the most ideal for the success of your business. Advertising and marketing firms understand the emotions that colors convey and always choose the colors of their marketing carefully. Here’s a quick reference for the emotions conveyed by common colors. Red: Very emotionally intense color. Associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. Use it as an accent color to stimulate people to make quick decisions. Orange: To the human eye, orange is a very hot color, so it gives the sensation of heat. Represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation. Use it to catch attention and highlight the most important elements of your design. Yellow: Yellow is the color of sunshine and produces a warming effect. It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect, and energy. Yellow is an unstable and spontaneous color, so avoid using yellow if you want to suggest stability and safety. Green: Symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility. Green has strong emotional correspondence with safety and has great healing power. Dark green is also commonly associated with money. Blue: Blue is the color of the sky and sea. It is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolizes trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven. Avoid using blue when promoting food and cooking, because blue suppresses appetite. Purple: Symbolizes power, nobility, luxury, and ambition. Conveys wealth and extravagance and is associated with wisdom, dignity, independence, creativity, mystery, and magic. Light purple is a good choice for a feminine design; use bright purple when promoting children's products. White: White is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity, and virginity. Considered to be the color of perfection and conveys safety, purity, and cleanliness. Use white to suggest simplicity in high-tech products. Black: Associated with power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery. It usually carries a negative connotation, but denotes strength and authority. Combined with red or orange – other very powerful colors – black gives a very aggressive color scheme. Business Branding Rule #2: Let the logo do the talking In those crucial first few seconds of grabbing a client’s attention, your logo must convey a clear, concise message that is easily understood. For example, if you fix computers, consider including an image of computer and stethoscope to convey that you’re a computer doctor. Or, if you own a hair salon include an image of old-fashioned vanity lights and shears. Get the idea? The key is to identify at least one tangible icon that represents your business. The slogan should do the talking, while the logo is visually supportive of the message of the slogan. Business Branding Rule #3: Keep the slogan short and sweet Remember, you only have a few seconds to grab someone’s attention. That means you have about two seconds to convey your message. The brain can process information at amazing speeds, and you’d be surprised by how much information can be conveyed in a split second - but only when it’s done properly. Your slogan should always be attached to your logo, appearing directly below or next to the image. Make your slogan seven words or less - again short and sweet. Be sure the slogan says what you do without making it sound dry and uninteresting. For example, let’s say you are a business coach. You could create a slogan that clearly and concisely conveys what you do - without having to provide a lengthy elevator speech. Here are some examples: • “The Small Business Guru” • “Take Your Business Global” • “The Home Business Coach” • The Referral Coach™ - already taken • The Strategic Coach™ - already taken • The Accountability Coach™ - already taken Business Branding Rule #4: Consistency is king Now that you have your logo and slogan, it’s important to stay consistent. In every piece of marketing from your letterhead to advertising spots, the logo and slogan should always remain consistent. If you’ve hired a professional graphic artist or marketing firm to create your business look, they should have provided a digital file with your logo and slogan in a variety of positions and sizes (to accommodate different sizes and methods of media). Once your design is set, do not waver from it. Ideally, keep the logo/slogan layouts to no more than three different layouts to accommodate different media such as website, letterhead, and print and web advertisements. Make sure that both your print marketing and online marketing are consistent. The design and color scheme should remain true to your website theme. You’d be surprised how many people will type in your URL when directed through an advertisement, only to get thrown off by a website design that looks nothing like the ad. When you don’t make the effort to keep your branding consistent you run the chance of confusing your potential clients - hence, losing revenue. Action Steps 1. Review Tip #1. Does your current logo reflect the type of image you want to portray? If not, hire a graphic designer to design a new logo and choose appropriate colors. Ask a friend or colleague for a recommendation, or go to Upwork.com or Guru.com to find a freelance graphic designer. Expect to pay $75 - $250 per logo. 2. Review Tip #3. Does your slogan really grab your ideal client? Put yourself in your client’s place. What slogan would make you want to hire you? Refine it, if need be, to reflect the most focused message possible that invokes immediate action. 3. Review Tip #4. Does your marketing contain a consistent message and design? If not, follow your company logo (design and color) and make necessary adjustments to all marketing pieces, including your website. However, if you follow the basics of business branding and resist the temptation to lose the focus of the message, you should be well on your way towards creating an effective brand. The most important basic factor in branding your business is conveying a message. You only have a few seconds to capture the attention of potential clients, and in those few seconds, your brand must clearly convey several points. About The Book: God Made Every Part of You! It's easy to convey the message to children that their bodies or particular parts of their bodies are shameful. This misconception fuels confusion, embarrassment, and secrecy, and often prevents children from recognizing or reporting sexual abuse. God Made All of Me is a simply-told, beautifully-illustrated story to help families talk about these sensitive issues with two- to eight-year-old children. Because the private parts of our bodies are private, the home is the ideal environment where a child should learn about his or her body and how it should be treated by others. God Made All of Me starts from the fundamental truth that God created everything and applies that truth to kids and their bodies. It equips parents to talk with both boys and girls about their bodies and to help them understand the difference between the appropriate and inappropriate touch of others. God Made All of Me allows families to build a first line of defense against sexual abuse in the safety of their own homes. God Made All of Me is the first children's book written by Rid of My Disgrace authors Justin and Lindsey Holcomb. Parents of young children themselves, the Holcombs regularly counsel victims of sexual abuse and are profoundly aware of the dangers kids face.
