(Conversation recorded on November 12th, 2024)     In today's modern era, the overwhelming flood of information that constantly flows our way can leave us feeling disoriented, lost, and powerless. Even science – our most trusted source of truth – can be taken out of context to fuel division and distort the reality around us. In the midst of this confusion, how can we learn to ground ourselves and find guideposts that can direct our lives and work?  Today, Nate is joined by storyteller and social thinker, Dougald Hine, to explore the importance of narratives in shaping our understanding of the world and how they can help us navigate the complexities of life, especially in the face of ecological crises. Together, they discuss the need for a reframing of conversations around environmental and climate issues, the importance of grassroots responses to systemic crises, and the concept of ‘engaged surrender' as a way to navigate the challenges of modern life.  How can we foster emotional resilience in the face of ecological overshoot and the death of modernity? What role do art and storytelling play alongside science and data in responding to our collective human predicament? And how can we strengthen our communities and plant the seeds for a different way of life, starting in our own small corners of the world?   About Dougald Hine: Dougald Hine is a social thinker, writer and speaker. After an early career as a BBC journalist, he went on to co-found the Dark Mountain Project, where he was the director until 2019. He is also the co-author, with Paul Kingsnorth, of Uncivilisation: The Dark Mountain Manifesto, and his latest book is titled, At Work in the Ruins: Finding Our Place in the Time of Science, Climate Change, Pandemics & All the Other Emergencies.  Dougald's recent projects include Notes From Underground, a ten-part essay series for Bella Caledonia exploring the deep roots of the new climate movements, and The Great Humbling, a podcast he co-hosts with Ed Gillespie. He and Anna Björkman are creating a school called HOME, ‘a gathering place and a learning community for those who are drawn to the work of regrowing a living culture'. His latest writing is published on his Substack, Writing Home.   Show Notes and More Watch this video episode on YouTube   Want to learn the whole story of The Great Simplification? For the latest SWH! podcast Ali spoke to musician Douglas MacIntyre, filmmaker Grant McPhee, and journalist Neil Cooper to learn all about their new book 'Hungry Beat - The Scottish Independent Pop Underground Movement (1977-1984)'. It's seems a shame to have the three on the same podcast as each deserves an individual interview to themselves (and that may come to pass in the future.) Douglas runs the excellent indie record label Creeping Bent as well as putting on the FRET series of concerts at the Strathaven Hotel, and has played with a number of bands over the years. Grant McPhee has made three great documentaries looking at Scottish indie music, Teenage Superstars, The Glasgow School, and Big Gold Dream - the latter providing the inspiration for Hungry Beat. Neil Cooper is a journalist, critic and cultural commentator who writes for the Herald, Bella Caledonia, and many other fine publications. Few have written more insightfully about, and on, Scottish culture as he has. What follows is a fascinating and in depth conversation about what many consider the glory days of Scottish independent music, when a number of bands, musicians, and mavericks made the music world sit up and listen. Whether you were there or not this is a must listen for any music lover. You can find out more, as well as out to get a copy of Hungry Beat, over at scotswhayhae.com

In this episode we focus entirely on Ukraine. The escalation of Russian actions, the reaction of the EU to the crisis, and whether the UK's rhetoric is matched by action.Lesley reflects on the experience of Finland's relationship with the former Soviet Union , and now Russia, post the invasions in the aftermath of the Winter War. Will Putin risk another Afghanistan if dragged into an unexpected war of attrition or will he look for a "Finlandisation" settlement?Meanwhile the EU is taking unprecedented measures to support Ukraine militarily, welcome refugees, and is even considering fast tracking them into full membership. The UK ,while working with the EU,USA and Canada,on excluding Russian banks from SWIFT, seems stronger on rhetoric and self promoting visuals than assistance to Ukrainians fleeing the war.We also evaluate what impact if any the blows to the Russian economy, through the extension of sanctions, will have on Putin's policies. The conflict has also revealed significant racism not only in terms of the treatment of black and Asian refugees trying to escape Ukraine but also in the coverage of the conflict by major news outlets. The Tory Party and its relationship with Russian donors with strong links to the Putin regime has been thrown into sharp relief yet again by recent events. Will there be a clean up of the sewer of Russian influence on UK politics?Alex Salmond has suspended his show on Russia Today. RT is currently under investigation by OFCOM over its coverage of the Ukraine invasion. Lesley believes suspension isn't enough, quitting RT is the only moral decision to make.Bella Caledonia has just published an anthology containing "some of the best writing from Scotland in the last fourteen years combining new and established writers. In this week's episode we begin, inevitably, with the biggest story of the political week, the Dominic Cummings affair. Just how will it play with the swathe of new, northen English,Tory voters? In Scotland, even before Cummingsgate, Nicola Sturgeon's ratings sored in polls over her handling of the Covid crisis to over 80% while Boris Johnson's plummeted to 30%. Will this prove the Rubicon for previous opponents of Scottish independence. Plus, has the coverage of Cummings by both the BBC and ITV revealed the all too cosy relationship between polticians and lobby correspondents? Care homes have been at the centre of excess deaths during the pandemic. Have they been left too long in the hands of shadowy off shore conglomerates and will this be a wake up call for reform up here? We return to the Andy Wightman amendments on rent freezes which we discussed last week. Sadly they fell. George Kerevan's article in Bella Caledonia suggests that the Scottish government is putting the interests of corporate Build to Let landlords over those of their tenants. Along the way there's also Call Kaye and my dodgy front teeth.

The first six episodes traced a series of lines from the moment of Extinction Rebellion and the school strikes, back into the longer history of industrial society and its unacknowledged consequences. In the sequence that began with episode seven, the theme is 'knowing what we know': the encounter with the knowledge of climate change, not as a set of facts that can be held at arm's length, but an experience of knowing that leaves us changed.Notes From Underground is produced in collaboration with Bella Caledonia. Even when we know the facts of climate change, we don't seem to act as if we know – that's the observation from the sociologist Kari Norgaard which starts this week's essay in the Notes From Underground series. The theatre maker Chris Goode suggests that the difficulty might be that we lack 'a living-space in which to fully know what we know'. And the similarity between these two thoughts sets us on a journey across the threshold from knowledge to knowing. It's a journey that takes in the history of written language, the persistence of indigenous ways of knowing in the face of systematic cultural destruction, and the way that modern science tangles with all of this.In Notes From Underground, Dougald Hine (co-founder of the Dark Mountain Project) invites listeners into the darkness of knowing a thing like climate change and the ways this knowledge changes us. The first six episodes of the series followed different threads into the labyrinth, starting from the new wave of awareness and activism around the climate crisis that emerged over the past eighteen months. 'When you organise politically to demand a declaration of emergency, you cannot avoid the question of democracy. If such a declaration means anything, then it marks a fork in the road. It says that our existing political systems have failed, that they have been no match for the scale of the crisis, and this seems hard to refute. But having acknowledged their failure, two paths remain: more democracy, or less.'This week's episode of Notes From Underground is a reflection on what it means to call for a declaration of climate emergency, one of the distinctive demands of the new climate movements. Just last week, the editors of the Oxford English Dictionary declared 'climate emergency' their word of the year, one marker of the extraordinary momentum which has gathered around this language over the past twelve months. So this is an invitation to think harder and speak more clearly about what it means to organise around such a demand. In Notes From Underground, Dougald Hine (co-founder of The Dark Mountain Project) invites us to go deeper into the context of the new climate movements and what they tell us about the moment in which we find ourselves. Here’s what I’ve been picking up from the people I meet, the audiences I speak to and the stories that come back to me: on a scale not seen before, people are having an encounter with climate change not as a problem that can be solved or managed, made to go away, or reconciled with some existing arc of progress, but as a dark knowledge that calls our path into question, that starts to burn away the stories we were told and the trajectories our lives were meant to follow, the entitlements we were brought up to believe we had, our assumptions about the shape of history, the kind of world we were born into and our place within it.” (http://bit.ly/34lnMwl) In this discussion, we explore this uncharted territory that we have collectively entered into, to which Dougald has rightfully defined as “some kind of initiatory process.” What does it mean, in a time of compounding and accelerating crises (climatologically, ecologically, socially), to undergo a process of initiatory rites? 'The need for economic growth is a social construct, not a law of nature, but this construct is the tablecloth on which our current society has been arranged. The question we face, as the 2020s come around, is whether we can pull the tablecloth out fast enough without smashing all the plates and glasses?'In Notes From Underground, Dougald Hine (co-founder of The Dark Mountain Project) invites us to go deeper into the context of the new climate movements and what they tell us about the moment in which we find ourselves. This week's episode asks what happens when the incompatibility of economic growth and ecological viability becomes speakable in the corridors of power.Notes From Underground is a weekly series, running through the winter of 2019/20. The last time the climate crisis was getting this much attention, it was Al Gore striding on stage to talk us through the high-end PowerPoint presentation of An Inconvenient Truth. From Greta Thunberg to Gail Bradbrook to Jem Bendell, the strange collection of public figures at the centre of the new climate movements have little in common with Al Gore. They don't have a neat story about how it can all be OK. Their voices are powerful because we can hear their fear.In Notes From Underground, Dougald Hine (co-founder of The Dark Mountain Project) invites us to go deeper into the context of these movements and what they tell us about the moment in which we find ourselves. This first episode traces a route from Stockholm in August 2018, through the advice that Extinction Rebellion didn't take from climate communications experts, to the question of what an Alcoholics Anonymous for a whole culture would look like.Notes From Underground is a weekly series, running through the winter of 2019/20. This day early podcast is brought to you courtesy of my gallivanting off to Wales tomorrow(Thursday) morning. Lesley returns to the continuing story of land ownership in Scotland and the rights (or lack of them) of tenant farmers. Labour's Scottish conference in Dundee and the potential rebellion of Kezia Dugdale and Ian Murray leads us down the byways of speculation over Brexit, Labour's squaring of electoral circles north and south of the border and allotments (trust me it made sense at the time). Plus, I have my say on Labour voting independence supporters, like Cat Boyd. A beautifully written article in Bella Caledonia by Clare Galloway allows us to discuss the role, impact, and cost of alcohol in Scotland. We ask will Sky come to regret its poll on the most influential women in British history as Nicola Sturgeon and Mhairi Black lie first and third with only two hours left to vote?  Tomorrow is International Women's Day and we finish with reflections on Mhairi Black's passionate, articulate, and deeply personal speech on misogyny at Westminster earlier today.

For the 132nd episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast, I got in touch with Danny McGregor.Danny is a member of the Scottish Greens and is campaigning for Indyref 2. He also recently wrote an article for Bella Caledonia in which he talked about the various possibilities for the timing of the second independence referendum. There are those that think we have to seize the moment of uncertainty that exists now. Others suggest that we have to wait until the polls are steadily showing a large lead for yes. These are difficult options to juggle, and they were the main focus of our discussion. Also, if you remember episode 129 in which I interviewed lots of people at the March for Indy, I found some interviews that were accidentally not included in that special episode (they were in a different folder), and wanted to put them on one of the shows, so they are in this one. Those interviews include one Bob Duncan, who you may know from BBC Scotlandshire.Hope you enjoy.LINKShttps://twitter.com/dannym_1984https://twitter.com/mgreenwellhttp://bellacaledonia.org.uk/2016/08/15/unleashing-scotland-resisting-the-chorus-of-caution/http://michaelgreenwell.wordpress.com/https://www.facebook.com/TheScottishIndependencePodcast

Andrew wasn't with us as he had some wetlands to vex.Our discussion started with the accusations this week that all is not as it seems with Labour For Indy. Is it a front group, is the hand of the SNP behind it? Carolyn and Jamie seemed to feel the whole story says more about our media than it does about the group itself. We moved on to the Unions and their reticence to get involved officially so far.Salmond's interview on Russia Today provoked a little discussion, and not just about what he actually said.We discussed the form of democracy Scotland should take after Indy. For example, should there be further referendums on issues like monarchy and currency? Should the parliament be unicameral or bicameral. If there is a second chamber, how could that be organised? Finally, we spoke about James' recent article in which he suggested that aside from damaging (or not) the Yes campaign, the campaign of Better Together is just generally damaging.
