Did you know that one of the most undervalued positions inside the church walls is the student pastor? That was a big surprise to Lynley and I when we heard author Steve Cuss say this. So we've invited Ben Trueblook, the Director of Student Ministry here at Lifeway, and Brian Preston who serves as the student minister at Battle Creek Church in Oklahoma to talk about what it's like for today's current student pastors on the front lines with students today. Youth pastors have a tendency to know a ton of people at church, but can sometimes be known deeply by few. For your own personal growth, mental health and spiritual health, it is so important to have close friendships that go much deeper than the superficial stuff. Do you have those people in your life that you can open up to? The people that you can be very real with? The close friendships that don't just know you as a youth pastor, but know who you are to your core? These are the people that you need in your life to lean on for support and accountability. In this episode we take a look at why youth pastors need deeper friendships that go beyond their youth ministry. We recently attended the Youth Pastor Summit (https://slulead.com/yps/) where Ben Trueblood (www.studentministry.lifeway.com/ - Director of Student Ministry for Lifeway Christian Resources) and Shane Pruitt (www.shanepruitt.com - National Next Gen Director for the North American Mission Board) discussed the importance of these friendships during their talks and Q&A session. If you haven't already signed up for the Youth Pastor Summit in your area, we encourage you to do so! https://slulead.com/yps/We love hearing from you all and we do our best to provide powerful and insightful youth ministry content on a weekly basis to be that coach and mentor you may not have, but desperately need.If you have an episode idea, please E-Mail us at MinistryCoachPodcast@gmail.com!If you have it on your heart to support this ministry, please consider going to our Patreon page at: www.patreon.com/ministrycoachYou may also enjoy these episodes:(#093) Youth Pastor Self Care: Making Time for Yourself & Avoid Burn Outhttps://www.buzzsprout.com/974710/episodes/10298852(#118) Are You Losing Your Heart for Youth Ministry? 3 Ways to Get it Back!https://www.buzzsprout.com/974710/episodes/11403641==================

5 Leadership Questions Podcast on Church Leadership with Todd Adkins
In this episode of the 5 Leadership Questions podcast, Todd Adkins and Chandler Vannoy are joined by Ben Trueblood, Director of Student Ministry at LifeWay, and Zac Workun, Student Ministry Specialist for LifeWay and cofounder of Youth Ministry Booster. They discuss the following questions: What stories are you hearing about how student pastors are responding to this COVID situation and disruption? What are the creative ways you are hearing for student ministries innovating around not being able to go to camp? What are some things that student pastors with senior pastors knew, in general? What do they wish they knew in light of COVID?How does a student pastor lead up effectively to a senior pastor? What should the mentoring relationship look like between the senior pastor and the student pastor? BEST QUOTES "This is a really fascinating season to see student ministers in a season of forced innovation.""The barrier of trying to get Wednesday night ready kept them from being deeply relational as they hoped to be with parents, with students, with leaders.""It's provided an environment for leaders to be with a smaller group of students in order to get to know them more.""I wish my senior pastor knew how much I wanted him to be invested in my life personally.""Part of what I wish more senior pastors knew about their student pastor were more clearly defined expectations for success." "Are we having honest enough conversations about what we fear and what we are frustrated by or also what we are trying to work toward?""With grace, and it depends on the relationship, but to be able to help your pastor connect in a virtual environment is a way student pastors can lead up.""Student pastors are engaged with the most digital people on the planet.""In a season of unknown, the really courageous leadership posture is to say, 'I don't know.'""There's a lot of things that we can do as the missionary preparers for these young people to help them understand the ways in which they can impact culture and not just try to appropriate church into whatever platform they are on.""There is a lot that cannot happen inside of a staff meeting. There is a lot that can happen in the honest conversations between a pastor who has been in it for 30 years and a pastor who has been in it for 3 years or less." Authors Brian Mills and Ben Trueblood encourage parents to engage their teens in spiritual conversations before going to college. Warning your teen about life's pitfalls isn't enough-you want to see them thoroughly connected to Christ, and parents can model that. Together they talk about the two beliefs that determine your life every day: What you believe about God, and what you believe about who you are. 5 Leadership Questions Podcast on Church Leadership with Todd Adkins
In this episode of the 5 Leadership Questions podcast, Todd Adkins and Daniel Im are joined by Scott McConnell, Executive Director of LifeWay Research, and Ben Trueblood, Director of LifeWay Students. During their conversation, they discuss the following questions: What are some of the surprising things found in this research? What are the factors that contribute to continued regular attendance in church? What are some of the shifts you can make that lead to people staying connected?Practically speaking, if I am a student pastor or a parent listening, what can I do over the next week? Over this fall? Over this year? BEST QUOTES "About 66% of young adults who attend a protestant church for at least a year in high school step away from church for at least a year between ages 18 and 22.""Of those young adults that dropped out, one of the reasons that jumped the most is the politics in the church - political views being voiced in the church that the student didn't agree with.""Teach a teenager how to see the world from a biblical standpoint and how to sit with their Bible and discover for themselves what they think and how to believe.""We are not teaching young people what it means to be truly connected to a local body of believers called a church.""The number one indicator of students staying connected to a church is when they could identify three spiritual mentors during their time in high school they were three times more likely to stay connected to the church in college.""Your care of that person's life will overcome a lack of chemistry.""Students are amazingly good at sniffing out things that are not genuine.""27% of these students said that they had spiritual conversations in the home.""Equip parents to have a spiritual conversation in their home with their children.""One of the best things we can show them is to get them to fall in love with God's Word." Ben Trueblood knows his stuff. As the Director of Student Ministry for LifeWay Christian Resources, Ben and his team are passionate about pointing students to Jesus through everything they do. Years ago Lifeway did a study often referred to as the "drop out" study that revealed how many students leave the church when they graduate high school. If you've been in youth ministry very long, you too know that this is a reality for many students that have been through your ministry Now, they've once again taken another look at the habits of students and what's happening when they graduate high school. But this time, they're taking a positive approach trying to think through how we can help kids maintain their relationship with Christ during "after graduation" years. They really believe that making a difference is within reach. In this episode, Ben unpacks some of their findings and takes a moment to dig deep into one particular idea that's making a huge difference in the lives of teenagers. PODCAST GROUP!
