Join me as I welcome my dear friend and Concordia, Nebraska alumnus, Daniel, to explore the transformative power of worship and its lasting impact on our ministry work. We take a nostalgic trip back to our college days, where we spearheaded a contemporary worship service, igniting a diverse community's passion for Jesus. Our heartfelt conversation dives into the current challenges faced by the church, including engaging congregations, discipling in a bustling world, and the yearning for a reformation in the American Christian church focused on an active, committed faith life.As we unravel the intricate dance of calling and ministry within the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, Daniel shares his unique journey. Opting for a master's degree over traditional seminary, he brings insight into the rich interdenominational interactions that shaped his approach to youth ministry. We ponder the need for adaptability in the face of cultural shifts and the art of nurturing spiritual growth amid life's relentless pace. Together, we examine the potential of alternative ordination paths and the importance of leadership development through initiatives like the Harbor Leadership Collective internship program. In our final moments, we cast a vision for the future of youth ministry, acknowledging the necessity of personal connections and community in an ever-changing technological era. We discuss the importance of investing in young lives, fostering their active participation in faith, and preparing them for an unwavering commitment to Christ's love. Daniel Lee is the academic dean for the Center for Asian American Theology and Ministry at Fuller Theological Seminary and author of Doing Asian American Theology.Daniel Lee discusses the fact that each of us does theology from a particular persepective.  Recognizing our own "particularities" makes us far better leaders.  Why?  Because the more we are aware of our own cultural particularities, the more we become competent as leaders in regard to one another's cultural particularities.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Daniel Lee discusses the idea of God transcending divisive issues and the theological basis for God's perception of people.Daniel Lee initially saw his Korean heritage as baggage and tried to shed his cultural identity for a more generic evangelical perspective, but later realized the importance of embracing his Asian American identity in relation to his faith and theology.Initially resistant to being an Asian American theologian, Daniel Lee eventually embraced the need to articulate and address the significance of his cultural identity in his theological work.Daniel Lee points out that everyone has their own perspective and that when some perspectives become normalized, others are seen as abnormal. This issue exists in society and churches.Lee highlights the absence of modern-day race in the Bible and emphasizes the interaction between God and individuals, suggesting God's unique interaction with each person.Daniel Lee compares Asian American theology to the witness of God found in the gospels, emphasizing that theology is contextual and filtered through human perspective. It is important to recognize theology from an Asian American perspective and to witness to the one God collectively, while acknowledging that different perspectives yield a robust understanding of God.Ministry leaders need to move beyond crude stereotypes depicted in pop culture and gain a deeper understanding of colonial history and community-specific challenges. It is so important to gain more vocabulary and knowledge about different communities.  We also need humility and adaptiveness when interacting with individuals and communities. Both Daniel Lee and Markus Watson talk about the importance of discerning and joining in with what God is doing within communities. It is important to understand particularity in theology, as well as apply ministry in specific and precise ways rather than using a generic approach.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Daniel Lee:Center for Asian American Theology and MinistryBooks mentioned:Doing Asian American Theology, by Daniel LeeDoing Local Theology, by Clemens SedmakChurch Leadership InstituteRelated Episodes:Episode 173: The Art of Interpreting Culture, with Justin BaileyEpisode 167: Called to Each Other, with Claude AlexanderEpisode 149: Ministry Leadership in a Racialized Society, with David SwansonEpisode 143: How the Church Can Respond to Immigration, with Karen GGet Becoming Leaders of Shalom for free HERE.Did you know Spiritual Life and Leadership has been named the #1 Spiritual Leadership Podcast by the Feedspot Podcasters Database? A new survey of churches across the US reveals that only 17% of women's ministry leaders are in paid staff positions at their churches. Put another way, 83% of women's ministry leaders serve totally as volunteers. Additionally, only 5% of women's ministry leaders conduct their planning with the involvement of the wider church staff.Women's ministry can be a great joy, but it can also be a heavy burden. Women's ministry leaders often face variables that are unseen by other church members and leaders. Navigating inequities in pay and involvement in overall church vision and strategy can be isolating. On this episode of All Things Jen Oshman asks Jen Wilkin tons of women's ministry questions: Why it's beneficial. Why and how to integrate it within the broader church staff and vision. Why it's important that women are paid for their work (Serving is good too! But pay does matter.).What makes a substantive women's ministry. How women who lead as volunteers can begin a conversation about wages with their leadership. If women should go to seminary if they aren't guaranteed paid work. How women who serve in healthy churches can encourage their sisters who don't. A gospel-centered perspective on growing women's ministry, even when it feels tough. . We cover a lot of ground!
