Abstract: During sleep, recent memories are consolidated, whereby behavioral episodes first encoded by the hippocampus get transformed into long-term memories. However, the brain cannot consolidate every experience and much like the triage of an emergency room, the hippocampus is hypothesized to give precedence to more important memories first, and deprioritize or even skip over less relevant memories if needed. Here we examine two factors that are postulated to influence this memory triage process- 1) repetition, arising from the number of times a behavioral episode is repeated, increasing the priority to consolidate and 2) familiarity, resulting from previously experiencing a similar behavioral episode, in turn decreasing the need for further consolidation. Recording from large ensembles of hippocampal place cells while rats ran repeated spatial trajectories, and afterwards during periods of sleep, we examined how these two factors influenced replay, a hypothesized mechanism of consolidation involving the offline spontaneous reactivation of memory traces. We observed that during sleep, the rate of replay events for a given track increased proportionally with the number of spatial trajectories run by the rat. In contrast to this, the rate of sleep replay events decreased if the rat was more familiar with the track, arising from previously running on the same track before its most recent sleep session. Furthermore, we find that the cumulative number of awake replay events that occur during behavior, influenced by both the novelty and duration of an experience, predicts which memories are prioritized for sleep replay, and provides a more parsimonious mechanism for the selectively strengthening and triaging of memories. Abstract: During rest and sleep, memory traces replay in the brain. The dialogue between brain regions during replay is thought to stabilize labile memory traces for long-term storage. However, because replay is an internally-driven, spontaneous phenomenon, it does not have a ground truth - an external reference that can validate whether a memory has truly been replayed. Instead, replay detection is based on the similarity between the sequential neural activity comprising the replay event and the corresponding template of neural activity generated during active locomotion. If the statistical likelihood of observing such a match by chance is sufficiently low, the candidate replay event is inferred to be replaying that specific memory. However, without the ability to evaluate whether replay detection methods are successfully detecting true events and correctly rejecting non-events, the evaluation and comparison of different replay methods is challenging. To circumvent this problem, we present a new framework for evaluating replay, tested using hippocampal neural recordings from rats exploring two novel linear tracks. Using this two-track paradigm, our framework selects replay events based on their temporal fidelity (sequence-based detection), and applies a cross-validation using each event's trajectory discriminability, where cross-track sequenceless decoding is used to quantify whether the track replaying is also the most likely track being reactivated. Il comprend alors qu'il n'est pas éternel. Il annonce à la surprise générale qu'il se retire de la gestion de l'entreprise en 1968. Ses fils Patrick et Bernard sont très surpris. Mais il est temps pour lui. Il se retire pour peindre et passer des moments seuls. Mais le bâtisseur n'a jamais fini. Il lance un projet au Castellet pour construire une piste automobile de 1,8 km qui deviendra un circuit international. Il devient même maire de la commune de Signes. Il s'éteint à l'âge de 88 ans en 1997. C'est un homme en paix. Filmmakers Taylor Morden and Zeke Kamm explore the last remaining Blockbuster Video store run by Sandy Harding in Bend, Oregon in their documentary The Last Blockbuster.

In this episode, we talk to Dr Daniel Bendor from University College London. Daniel's work focuses on rodent studies of place cells in the hippocampus. We discuss the phenomena of memory replay in which place cell activity mimics patterns of activity that occurred while the rodent was performing a task in wake. We also discuss how this process can be manipulated using targeted memory reactivation (TMR). From this we discuss how the TMR instead of triggering a reactivation of a memory could instead be biasing the brain to replay the memory which is cued. We go on to talk about the relationship between the cortex and hippocampus and discuss theories on the hippocampus training the cortex in putting together components of memories and how this dialogue may take place. Throughout the episode, we discuss rodents as sleep models and the positives and limitations of using them compared to human/primate models.Finally, we discuss links between TMR and brain washing and the possible worries this may cause. J. Abstract: Much of our understanding of navigation has come from the study of rats, humans and simulated artificial agents. To date little attempt has been made to integrate these approaches into a common framework to understand mechanisms that may be shared across mammals and the extent to which different instantiations of agents best capture mammalian navigation behaviour. Here, we report a comparison of rats, humans and reinforcement learning (RL) agents in a novel open-field navigation task (Tartarus Maze) requiring dynamic adaptation (shortcuts and detours) to changing obstructions in the path to the goal. We find humans and rats are remarkably similar in patterns of choice in the task. The patterns in their choices, dwell maps and changes over time reveal that both species show the greatest similarity to RL agents utilising a predictive map: the successor representation. Humans also display trajectory features similar to a model-based RL agent. Our findings have implications for models seeking to explain mammalian navigation in dynamic environments and highlight the utility of modelling the behaviour of different species in the same frame-work in comparison to RL agents to uncover the potential mechanisms used for behaviour.
