S6, Ep35 – The Frank Thomas Episode (Big Hurt, Big Takes)This week on Sports Fellowship with Fox and Frank, we welcome special guest Tyler Morrow to the mic for the first time! It's the Frank Thomas episode—celebrating No. 35 and the Big Hurt's big career—as the crew digs into the NBA Playoffs drama. The Knicks stun the Celtics to go up 2–0, and Dan and Frank debate Boston's three-point woes, Jason Tatum's leadership, and Porzingis's familiar disappearing act.We also check in on the Warriors' struggles without Steph Curry, the Cavs' shocking hole against Indiana, and whether OKC's blowout win signals a power shift in the West. Meanwhile, Draymond Green's antics get called out, and Dan recounts a memorable night in the nosebleeds seeing Shaq in his prime.Shifting to hockey, we talk NHL Playoffs chaos, cheap shots vs. hard hits, and Frank and Tyler go head-to-head over the Devils and Rangers. Finally, Dan calls out ESPN and Disney for their staggering hypocrisy on political messaging, sparking a fiery take on woke sports culture. All this plus Fox Brothers Alarms, obscure movie quotes, and rich basement vibes. Sports, honesty, and plenty of laughs—just the way you like it.Special Thanks to:Fox Brothers Alarms - https://foxbrothersalarms.comFirst Baptist church of Phillipsburg NJ http://www.fbcpburg.org/

It feels unfair that Roger Salkeld caught a stray at the end of Ohtani: The New Name For Sturgeon, yesterday's Willets Pod episode with guest Jesse Black. It's not Roger's fault that he was born with the S***eld name. In fact, he's got more claim to S***eld than Rick Springfield, whose name is actually Richard Lewis Springthorpe. What in the name of Hans Sprungfeld is that about, and then he has the nerve to scar an entire generation of Jesses by misspelling our names? Get bent, Dick Lewis Sprungfeld, and also Dick Lewis, dystopian nightmare villain of my childhood dreams thanks to his electronics store commercial. They'll come for you and that whistle, one day, too, P.C. Richard.Where were we? Roger Salkeld. His grandfather, Bill Salkeld, also was a major leaguer, hitting 15 home runs as a 28-year-old rookie with the 1945 Pirates, then never reaching those same heights — he played for the Boston Braves in 1948 and 1949, and one game with the 1950 White Sox. The trade that sent Salkeld to Boston was the November 1947 deal that brought Danny Murtaugh to Pittsburgh.Murtaugh paid instant dividends for the 1948 Pirates, taking the second base job and batting .290 with a career-high 71 RBIs and 10 steals (never mind that he was caught stealing 11 times and his .365 on-base percentage was accompanied by .356 slugging). Murtaugh finished ninth in that year's MVP vote (won by Stan Musial), right between Ralph Kiner and Enos Slaughter ahead of him, and Stan Rojek and Richie Ashburn behind him.Murtaugh played three more years in Pittsburgh, splitting time at second base with Monty Basgall, and then volunteered for a demotion to Double-A New Orleans, where he became player-manager in 1952 and started working his way back to Pittsburgh. Murtaugh got there as a coach a few years later, took over as manager in 1957, and won the World Series in 1960 and 1971.All after being traded for a guy whose grandson who is mostly part of the answer to the trivia question: who were the six guys drafted before Frank Thomas in 1989? It's Salkeld, who was third, along with Ben McDonald, Tyler Houston, Jeff Jackson, Donald Harris, and Paul Coleman.More to come about The Big Hurt on an upcoming episode of Willets Pod, because we need to talk about this fit. Trying to stay awake during what seems like a 5 1⁄2 -year break between LCSs and the World Series, SSS duty geezer Leigh Allan and his son and west coast correspondent, Will, indulge in a little nostalgia. That nostalgia ranges from the prospect of the return of Ozzieball to the new book that casts Frank Thomas as much more Big Jerk than Big Hurt in his playing days (bringing on discussion of other White Sox Big Jerks). Then it's on to funtime managerial speculation. And a useless suggestion to pick up David Stearns (who just resigned as president of baseball operations of the Brewers) to replace Ken Williams (who apparently is in the MLB witness protection program he is so unfindable) so Stearns can remove Rick Hahn, and that replacement can hire a new manager, who can then hire all new coaches, who can then turn over about half of the roster. Ain't fantasy wonderful? And, as long as we're fantasizing, we end up with a lineup that includes Dansby Swanson, Brandon Nimmo, and, of course, Aaron Judge, and a rotation that includes Carlos Rodón and Jacob deGrom. The World Series better start before we add Sandy Koufax, Hank Aaron and Willie Mays. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Not long after a stoppage in play, baseball needed a lift. But we aren't talking about 2022 here. Oh no, instead, it's 1996 – the first full season after the 1994-95 strike – we have in mind for the latest episode of ‘The Box Score Show' with a particular focus on the anticipation of Seattle's Opening Day and the ultimate letdown of the season that followed. It might not sound like the most likeliest of picks for a game to look back on, but bear with Kevin Chroust and Chris de Salvo as they journey back into an era when Randy Johnson toed the mound for the offensively prolific Mariners, and Frank Thomas was driving in runs for a White Sox team still getting over what could have been in '94. A shortstop sensation by the name of Alex Rodriguez was still proving himself and hit ninth on this opening day, while Ken Griffey Jr. was in the prime of Seattle primes. And Frank Costanza would not be thrilled if we forgot to mention Jay Buhner. We here at Ham and Spam are, admittedly, not huge baseball fans. We are however fans of retro baseball games!! For the first (and perhaps only) time, we will help ring in the upcoming baseball season the best way we know how by reviewing some of the best baseball games for NES, SNES, and Sega. Honestly this list begins and ends with Base Wars for us but we look at other retro baseball games to get a feel for the era. One thing is for certain, Sega really brought it when it came to the sports games..... Which were your favorites and which did we miss? Wordsworth, Punchline, Apathy, Gaston and Wiseguy put together this brilliantly boastful track aimed at showcasing their vocabulary and unique flow.

"It's not enough to protect children from predators. It's that we need to acknowledge the inherent worth of girls, why they are worth protecting why they are as important and as full of potential. Gen Xers and young Baby Boomers can be nostalgic about the freedoms of growing up in the 1970s. But there was a darker side to that era, too, especially for girls. Feminism was on the ascent, but the sexual revolution was moving even faster, bringing profound changes to behavioral norms and assumptions about pleasure and consent. In her new memoir, The Big Hurt, Erika Schickel recalls a childhood that was both magical and ruinous, one in which she played freely on the streets of her Manhattan neighborhood but, at the same time, attended a private school where (with the blessing of the headmaster) Hollywood casting agents scouted for girls to audition for the role of a child prostitute in the film Pretty Baby (incidentally, Jeffrey Epstein was teaching math at this school at the time). As a teen at boarding school, Erika was seduced by a male teacher and asked by the administration to leave before graduation. Her mother, meanwhile, applauded the relationship and Erika even briefly lived with the teacher before heading off to college. Decades later, while living the life of a conventional married mom in Los Angeles, Erika found herself embroiled in an obsessive affair with the legendary crime writer James Ellroy, a man who was himself damaged by the violence and tragedy of his youth. Erika spoke to Meghan about the book and the revelations that came to her over the more than ten years it took her to write it. During those years, the #MeToo movement came along, further complicating Erika's story while making it all the more relevant. Guest Bio: Erika Schickel is the author the memoir The Big Hurt (Hachette Books, 2021) and You're Not the Boss of Me: Adventures of a Modern Mom (Kensington Books, 2007).
