In the last of our FROM THE ARCHIVES episodes, I'm revisiting one of the most important conversations I think I've had on this podcast (not to mention one of my favourites) - with Terri White, the brains behind the award-winning podcast, Finding Britain's Ghost Children, which explored why so many children are missing from Britain's class rooms. Earlier this year, the podcast took home Gold at the ARIAS (industry Oscars etc) as well as a host of other commendations... My guest this week has come a hell of a long way - from the Derbyshire village where she grew up, to London and the editor's seat of Empire magazine, by way of New York where she was one of Folio magazine's top women in American media. Ostensibly Terri White was living the 'single woman in Manhattan' dream.  But, uber-competent at work, she was clinging by a thread in her personal life, struggling with chronic depression, self-harming and self-medicating with alcohol and prescription pills. When she was admitted to a psychiatric ward it marked the beginning of a remarkable journey that she documents in her extraordinary memoir, Coming Undone. To say it's raw and unflinching would be a massive understatement. Brace yourself for some extreme honesty as Terri discusses her mental health struggles, being a working class woman in a middle class world, how becoming a mother affected her relationship with her own mother, curing herself of busy busy busy and why she would not go back to 25 if you paid her. Oh, and her extremely complicated relationship with her hair. TRIGGER WARNING: I must stress that if you're feeling vulnerable there is frank discussion of mental health, sexual abuse, self harm and suicidal ideation. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Coming Undone by Terri White and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. Zeen and Lula reach a milestone decision in the pages of Dark Horse's The High Republic Adventures Phase III #5, as the first arc of the comic comes to an end, yet sets up what's likely to be a dynamic run through issues 6-10. In Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #1 (of 4), the Sith apprentice contends with an almost Lovecraftian-like horror and inner madness that evokes a Guillermo del Toro film. It's dark and trippy and what Star Wars would be like if it were in the Hellraiser universe. Finally, Jango Fett seemingly makes some headway in his latest job for the Republic, as the plot thickens around the theft of the Hope of Gleen Anselm. Jango Fett #2 (of 4) is the organic prequel to Bounty Hunters and, based on this issue alone, is worthy of being turned into a monthly series.Comics Discussed This Week:Darth Maul: Black, White & Red #1 (of 4) (10:45)Jango Fett #2 (of 4) (20:53)The High Republic Adventures Phase III #5 (44:20)Star Wars Comics New to Marvel Unlimited This Week:Bounty Hunters #42Obi-Wan Kenobi #3The High Republic Phase III #3News: Dark Horse will publish a new, likely four issue, The HighRepublic Adventures mini-series in August. Coleen Greenwood spent almost two and a half years in a relationship with a man she knew as James Scott. He said he was a divorced firefighter who wanted to marry and go into business with her - but it was all based on a lie. Her story is the subject of a new BBC podcast series Love-Bombed with Vicki Pattison. Ahead of its launch we speak to Coleen about the impact the relationship had on her; and to DC Chris Bentham, who investigated the case. A boy and girl, both aged 15, have been arrested on suspicion of murder following the fatal stabbing of 16-year-old Brianna Ghey at a park in Warrington. This follows on from an incident last Monday, where a teenage girl was injured in what police have described as a "serious racially aggravated assault". Recent statistics from the Ministry of Justice show that there were 3,500 proven knife and offensive weapon offences committed by children between 2020 and 2021. We hear the latest from BBC's Rowan Bridge in Warrington and from Zoe Cooke, a campaigner against knife crime whose son Byron was stabbed to death in 2021. The war in Ukraine is turning geopolitics upside down, in a global order that already seemed brittle. We have an oil shock, a financial shock, a cold war, a hot war, an ongoing global pandemic all at the same time. Now global supply chains, upon which modern human life depends, have been severed. Supplies of food and fertilizer are threatened for those most dependent on it at a time when global warming curtails our agriculture. This makes urgent once again the so-called “agrarian question,” looking at the world through the perspective of what goes on in the countryside. All this brings into sharper focus the role of global capitalism in causing the conditions of peasants and workers to further deteriorate. To place the current crisis in its context and bring it back to the essential questions facing the majority of humanity, Rania Khalek was joined by Paris Yeros, professor of international economics at the Federal University of ABC in São Paulo, Brazil, who recently wrote a paper calling for a “New Bandung,” referencing the famous 1955 convening of the Afro-Asian Conference. Elements of a New Bandung: Towards an International Solidarity Front, by Paris Yeros:https://parisyeros.files.wordpress.com/2021/11/elements-of-a-new-bandung.pdf TIME CODES0:00 Intro2:01 Ukraine war: Food shortages and famine 5:13 The agrarian question & national sovereignty11:10 Self-sufficiency & the countryside 16:30 Calling for a new Bandung23:23 Existential crisis in Third World & system collapse30:37 Effects of climate crisis on agrarian question33:29 Why China is so important for the Global South38:15 How Global South views war in Ukraine42:15 Structural causes of Ukraine war51:34 What is multipolarity?54:43 Land reform in Zimbabwe1:13:22 Eurocentric social reformism

Beautiful Day's Elizabeth Freund curated this week's MD Podcast with Ringo Starr on a private Zoom press conference to announce Ringo Starr Change The World, a new EP to be released on September 24, 2021. The 4 tracks were all recorded at Starr's Roccabella West studio and features frequent and new collaborators. Ringo comments, "I only want to release EPs at this point and here is the next one. What a blessing it's been during this past year to have a studio here at home and be able to collaborate with so many great musicians.” The lead single "Let's Change The World" was written by Joseph Williams and Steve Lukather of Toto. "Just That Way" was written and performed by Ringo and his longtime engineer Bruce Sugar, and it carries on the reggae vibe from his last EP, Zoom In's "Waiting for the Tides to Turn" with Tony Chen returning on guitar, joined by Fully Fullwood on Bass and Ed Roth on Hammond B3. "Coming Undone" is Starr's first collaboration with songwriter/producer Linda Perry, who wrote and plays on the track that also featuring Trombone Shorty. For the final number, Ringo rocks his own version of "Rock Around The Clock" revved up by the unmistakable licks of Joe Walsh on guitar. They are joined by Nathan East on Upright Bass, Bruce Sugar on Piano and Amy Keys and Windy Wagner on Backing Vocals. Besides the EP, Ringo also talks about the upcoming much anticipated six hour “Get Back” film coming November 2021. Enjoy!

Gen Xers and young Baby Boomers can be nostalgic about the freedoms of growing up in the 1970s. But there was a darker side to that era, too, especially for girls. Feminism was on the ascent, but the sexual revolution was moving even faster, bringing profound changes to behavioral norms and assumptions about pleasure and consent. In her new memoir, The Big Hurt, Erika Schickel recalls a childhood that was both magical and ruinous, one in which she played freely on the streets of her Manhattan neighborhood but, at the same time, attended a private school where (with the blessing of the headmaster) Hollywood casting agents scouted for girls to audition for the role of a child prostitute in the film Pretty Baby (incidentally, Jeffrey Epstein was teaching math at this school at the time). As a teen at boarding school, Erika was seduced by a male teacher and asked by the administration to leave before graduation. Her mother, meanwhile, applauded the relationship and Erika even briefly lived with the teacher before heading off to college. Decades later, while living the life of a conventional married mom in Los Angeles, Erika found herself embroiled in an obsessive affair with the legendary crime writer James Ellroy, a man who was himself damaged by the violence and tragedy of his youth. Erika spoke to Meghan about the book and the revelations that came to her over the more than ten years it took her to write it. During those years, the #MeToo movement came along, further complicating Erika's story while making it all the more relevant. Guest Bio: Erika Schickel is the author the memoir The Big Hurt (Hachette Books, 2021) and You're Not the Boss of Me: Adventures of a Modern Mom (Kensington Books, 2007). She has taught memoir and essay writing at UCLA and privately. Her work has appeared in The Los Angeles Times, LA Weekly, LA City Beat, Salon, Ravishly, Tin House, Bust Magazine, and The LA Review of Books, among others.

But, we know that eventually things fall apart. Even our own lives fall apart. So, when all is coming undone, even when it feels like we are simply done, God is not done. To say it's raw and unflinching would be a massive understatement.Brace yourself for some extreme honesty as Terri discusses her mental health struggles, being a working class woman in a middle class world, how becoming a mother affected her relationship with her own mother, curing herself of busy busy busy and why she would not go back to 25 if you paid her. Oh, and her extremely complicated relationship with her hair.TRIGGER WARNING: I must stress that if you're feeling vulnerable there is frank discussion of mental health, sexual abuse, self harm and suicidal ideation. You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at Bookshop.org, including Terri White's memoir, Coming Undone, and the book that accompanies this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too by me!The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Emily Sandford. For over two decades, Julien Christian Lutz, better known as Director X, has been responsible for some of music's most iconic videos.    He has directed the videos for many of the world's top artists and hip hop legends including Kanye West, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Rihanna, Jay-Z, Justin Bieber, Usher, and many more.    His work has been recognized by MTV, Much Music, BET, and the Grammys with numerous nominations and awards. Julien has also entered the world of feature films directing movies such as “Across the Line,” “Center Stage: On Pointe,” and “Superfly.”   Currently, he seeks to make the world a more peaceful place through his community organization Operation Prefrontal Cortex. The organization aims to reduce gun violence and heal the effects of gun violence through meditation.    The 45-year-old director explained that in a person's brain, you have the prefrontal cortex and the amygdala. They are both connected. The prefrontal cortex shouldn't be too small compared to the amygdala because then violent tendencies arise.    Stress could shrink the prefrontal cortex but meditation can change that. That's why he created the Toronto-based organization to encourage children to meditate.    We certainly learned a lot when Julien dropped by the RUN GPG Podcast to share this new project.    Julien / Director X is a prolific director with close to 200 music videos under his belt, plus a few films, a TV series, and some commercials.    As mentioned, he has worked with the biggest artists in the world. He described Kanye West as passionate while Drake is “a student of the game.” He also said that he was impressed with Rihanna's growth from a young artist to a regal woman.    The “Center Stage: On Pointe” director also called Justin Bieber a “genius,” and was disappointed with how the singer was treated by people when he was only a teenager starting out in the music business.    While he mostly worked with hip-hop artists, Julien is really a versatile director. He also directed Demi Lovato's “Commander in Chief,” Little Mix's “Touch” and “Black Magic,” The Wanted's “Chasing the Sun,” Korn's “Coming Undone,” and a video for Chris Rock, among many others.    His “Life Is Good” video received a 2021 Grammy nomination.    Directing is about understanding human emotion, said Julien.    “You have to tell a deeper story about what attracts people to one another. You need to really get these things and study these things so that when you shape a story, you can shape it with subtle nuances. They will resonate on a deeper level,” Julien also said.    Here are some of the topics we covered:   Who is Julien Lutz aka Director X? Hip-hop scene in Toronto growing up.
