Why Listen: Billy is a professional golfer, the first Naval Academy graduate to earn a PGA TOUR card, which he has done for the last seven years. The more I learn about Billy's journey, the more I'm blown away by what he achieved. In a field that is crowded and incredibly competitive, Billy has succeeded despite having five years where - instead of focusing 100% on golf like his peer set - he was serving in the military. In this interview we talk about cultivating a mindet of excellence - even though serving as a Surface Warfare Officer didn't directly relate to his aspirations as a golfer - he focused on it 100% and did the best job he could. We talk about making sacrifices and how to balance that with being present with one's family. We talk about what life is like on the PGA Tour and more. About Billy: Billy Hurley III was a member of the victorious American team in the 2005 Walker Cup and served as captain of the 2004 Palmer Cup Team. He won seven collegiate golf titles at the Naval Academy, was named 2004 Patriot League Player of the Year and was ranked the #6 best amateur in the world. Billy was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy, serving as a Surface Warfare Officer for five years. After his Naval service, Billy turned his focus to golf. He earned his place on the Web.com Tour in 2011, finishing the season in 25th place and becoming the first Naval Academy graduate to earn a PGA TOUR Card. He has continued to be a strong competitor on the TOUR, winning the 2016 Quicken Loans National – a Tiger Woods-hosted tribute to military personnel. With the win, Billy qualified for his first PGA and Masters Championships.

In 2004 he graduated and continued serving for five years as a Surface Warfare Officer. After leaving the Navy, Billy has played golf as a professional career. Billy Hurley III graduated from the United States Naval Academy, where he played golf before becoming a Surface Warfare Officer and professional golfer on the PGA Tour. Hurley speaks of the subtle differences between his good and bad times on the golf course and his lessons learned in his time in the Navy that transitioned to other areas of his life, his advice for a young person at the Naval Academy, and his foundation: “The Billy Hurley III Foundation was established to support, honor and benefit a vital group of unsung heroes: military families” (BillyHurley3.com).“Billy grew up in Leesburg, Virginia, the oldest of four children. His father, Bill, introduced him to golf at a young age, and his mother, Cheryl, supported his growing passion by driving him to countless tournaments. During his senior year at Loudoun County High School, he was named to the all-state team and ranked third in Virginia. After his naval service ended in 2009, Billy turned his focus to golf. He earned his place on the Web Dot Com Tour in 2011, finishing the season in 25th place and therefore winning his PGA Tour Card. He was the first Naval Academy graduate to achieve this milestone. For the next 3 years Billy played in numerous events, finishing 5th at the Honda Classic, tied for 4th at the Greenbrier Classic, and qualifying for his first U.S. Open & Open Championship. He struggled during the 2015 season, ultimately losing his PGA Tour card. But he rebounded quickly in 2016 with a win at Quicken Loans National, a Tiger Woods-hosted tribute to military personnel. With that, Billy qualified for his first PGA and Masters Championships. As of April 2017, Billy is the only U.S. Military veteran on the PGA Tour. He lives in Annapolis, Maryland with his wife Heather and their three children Will, Jacob & Madison. The Hurleys are involved with various charitable organizations, especially those focused on supporting military personnel & their families and those committed to improving the lives of children & young adults” (BillyHurley3.com).Hosts: Tyler Buchholz and Colin KirkBilly Hurley III Website and FoundationBob Feller Act of Valor Award FoundationSupport the show (https://customcoinholders.com/product/walk-of-heroes/)

Her 17-under par is a new tournament record. Dr Bob says that he feels that Lydia's success is that she is happy and having fun enjoying the game.  Kevin and Dr Bob talk about how Lydia is like a surgeon on the course. The trio talk more on the women's play of late including Brooke Henderson's win.  In the next segment Holly welcomes Jeff Babineau, Golfweek. Jeff talks about his recent article on the Olympics and mentions that it's an unfortunate situation with players opting out of participating for a number of reasons. It's the first time in over a 100 years that golf is a part of the Olympics. Jeff feels that it's a perfect storm of factors that affect the game. Jeff and Holly talk about the Zika virus, the scheduling and the format of 72-hole stroke play. Holly also mentions that kids don't grow up today thinking about playing in the Olympics but more so a major championship.  Kevin brings up a lot of the unknown factors at Rio that might be affecting the players' decision. Funding dilemmas, Zika virus, security and more. Golf is only set as part of the Olympics for this year and the next Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The committee will vote in 2017 on the future of golf participating.  Holly asks Jeff about the WGC-Bridgestone this week and the French Open. Dr Bob and Jeff revisit the recent U.S. Open ruling debacle and the USGA's ruling. Dr Bob said that it was like the USGA held everyone hostage not knowing the final ruling. Next week's event at the Greenbrier has been cancelled due to the deathly flooding. Holly and Jeff talk about Bubba Watson's efforts to help bring attention to the golf world and others about the devastation and helping the people in the area. Dr Bob, Jeff and Holly talk about Tiger's return to golf and when he might come back. It's typically at the Congressional Golf Club in Bethesda, Md., but Bob stated that it can't be hosted there every year. The weather has been rainy and humid. Jeff and Bob talk about that it's the first time in 10 years, other than the Presidents Cup, that a PGA event has been at the RTJ course.  Jason Day was back in the winner's circle at the RBC Canadian Open. Hit 3 birdies in a row to overtake Bubba Watson. Jeff and Bob talk about Tiger Woods' performance of late and what the expectations should be given his swing changes and injuries. Bob says that Tiger needs to play these tournaments like no one cares what he shoots, but that's impossible.  But he needs the time on the course and maybe 10 tourneys down the road he emerges? Jeff asks Bob about Tiger's explanation of what is going on with his swing and the technical terminology he uses that the media and general public just can't grasp. He's having a hard time getting rid of his old swing habits. It would be nice for him to say that I'm not at the level I want to be at this time and I have to take the bad with the good. Bob feels that how Tiger approaches the reasoning behind his swing change and isn't as humble as he should be. Tiger thinks he can turn it around and he can find it.  Maybe he doesn't doubt creep in like most of us do. Does he think a major win is right around the corner? He thought so at the British Open and two holes in to the tournament it seemed that it was over. Bob talked about his article he wrote on Tiger and how it seems like Tiger is rushing back all the time instead of taking it slowly. He thinks Tiger should play some of the first 6 events at the beginning of the 2015-2016 season to gain some FedEx points and get back into things at a little slower pace. Adam Schupak, Golfweek, calls in to talk to Jeff from the 3M Championships in Minnesota and the Greats of Golf on Saturday Exhibition Scramble. It's like a Hall of Fame get together. The event is completely free. Players sign autographs on Saturday. Players tell stories about other players and needle one another.  Jeff talks to Adam about the 144th Open Championship. Jordan Spieth was the story to coming so close to winning the third leg of the Grand Slam and then missing the playoff by one stroke. Adam talks about the great play of Zach Johnson. Two major championships and 12 PGA Tour wins and probably punched his ticket to the Hall of Fame. Todd Lewis, Golf Channel, starts off the back nine portion of the show talking to Jeff about the Quicken Loans tournament, Rory McIlroy and other headlines in the world of golf. Billy Hurley III asks for help to find his missing father who went missing a couple weeks ago. Todd said they thought that Billy would talk about the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, Annapolis, Naval Academy and other things ... and when he Billy pleaded with the media to help find his father it was a little shocking. Todd spoke with the police department and found out that Billy has not heard from his father but the police have tracked his credit card use in TexArkana.  Jeff also talks to Todd about Sang-Moon Bae who has to leave the PGA Tour and serve his conscription in the South Korean military.  Maybe he thought the government would be lenient on him since the President's Cup is in Korea. Todd spoke with KJ Choi and found out that the public has turned away from Sang Moon Bae since he is trying not to do his public service. Steve Eubanks, Global Golf Post, calls in to wrap up the hour to talk about the Women's British Open in Turnberry Scotland, the LPGA's 4th major championship of the season. Steve feels that this is one of the biggest for the LPGA and always wonderful when this venue rolls around and see how the best women golfers in the world play such a classic golf course. Some of the best swings in golf come from the LPGA players. It's interesting to see how the best women in the game plod their way around the links golf course. Inbee Park is going for the career Grand Slam. She has some back trouble at the time and has "limped" in to the major. Steve said that back trouble is the worst for golfers as you don't know really exactly what you are doing.  Jeff and Steve discuss some of the LPGA golfers chances, like Michelle Wie, who is battling injuries and showed up to the tournament in a walking boot. Stacy Lewis is looking for her first major and it has been 54 tournaments since she won. Jeff mentions that Stacy has placed second many times and third as well.  Steve, who follows Stacey's game, said that Lewis' ball striking is the best that it has been in years.  Jeff asks Steve about In Gee Chun, U.S. Women's Open Champion, chances of winning the fourth major on the LPGA. Steve said that In Gee is not fluent in English yet, but when she is she will have a lot to talk about with the media. The South Korean golfer is a math genius even though her nickname on the tour is Dumbo.  Steve said it's because she hears everything that is going on around her and has nothing to do with her intelligence. As with any tournament, especially on a links course, the weather is a big factor and it's anybody's tournament to win.
