It was a great week for the podcast as Ryan had the winner of WGC Matchplay in Scottie Scheffler at 16/1 that win in Austin takes Scheffler to the summit of World Golf becoming the new World Number 1 Golfer after winning 3 of his past 5 events on PGA Tour. Jamie had Kevin Kisner finish Runner up at 66/1 along with another T2nd in Dominican Republic with 40/1 Alex Smalley at Corales Puntacana where Chad Ramey gained his maiden PGA Tour title. On the DP World Tour in Qatar it was victory for the Scots as the supremely talented Scot Ewen Ferguson battled back bravely from the heartache of Kenya to win his first professional title at Qatar Masters winning at -7 in a brutal contest at the weekend in Doha. This week it is the first major of the year as the Ladies of the LPGA & LET Tours flock to Mission Hills Golf Club in Rancho Mirage, California for Chevron Championship formerly known as ANA Inspiration. Patty Tavatanakit was the winner last year at -18. Measuring just over 6,800 yards Mission Hills is an iconic venue in the Women's game with world's best such as Jin Young Ko, Inbee Park, Lexi Thompson and Annika Sorenstam all lifting this Major Championship. Craig & Ryan go through how we feel the first major will play out and we both have a consensus value pick at 20/1. On the PGA Tour we stay in Texas this week as we head to San Antonio for Valero Texas Open the last stop on Tour before The Masters next week! 7,464 yard Par 72 Greg Norman designed TPC San Antonio (Oaks Course) takes Centre stage as Jordan Spieth returns to defend his dramatic title win last year. This event throws up surprises so don't be surprised to see a triple figure winner win this week. Be sure to follow us on Twitter @ChasingPars_Pod, @ThomsonGolf94, @GolfTipster5 & @Js_GolfingTips. It's U.S. Women's Open Week and the 76th Edition of the Championship is hosted by the Olympic Club in San Francisco  This historic venue has hosted several memorable USGA championships over the years, including the 1955 US Open, where Ben Hogan lost in a playoff to an unsung player - Jack Fleck.   The ultimate irony for Mr. Hogan was Jack Fleck was one of the very first players on the PGA to play with the newly developed "Ben Hogan Signature series Golf Clubs".   The venue was also host to the 1966 US Open, where the new King of Golf, Arnold Palmer, lost in a playoff to Billy Casper, despite having a 6-stroke lead going into the Final Round.  Palmer's inability to close the event led to a Monday 18-hole playoff, and the unofficial decline of Palmer as the King of the hill. This year marks the very first time that the Women's Championship will be hosted at this historic club and like its Men's counterparts, promises to be equally exciting as the best players in Women's Golf tackle the famed course.  Small, elevated and undulating greens with its sloping and cambered fairways and traditional "US Open rough" will challenge the shotmaking abilities of these talented pro's.  Our special guest, Aimee Cho, is probably best known for her incredibly popular YouTube golf instruction channel -- Golf with Aimee, where she provides simple, fun and effective lessons and tips.   Aimee Cho is also a former professional player on  the LPGA's Symetra Tour joins us to review and analyze this year's championship.  Fresh off of her appearance on CBS LA as a guest analyst for the PGA Championship at the Ocean Course (Kiawah), Aimee is eager to talk about the most challenging event in women's golf and to share her special perspective on how the Lake Course at Olympic will play for the women. We review favourites like Inbee Park, Brooke Henderson, Lydia Ko, Nelly Korda and Patty Tavatanakit  among a handful of other contenders.  So listen in or download the episode today.

This week, Matt Cooper joins the podcast to discuss the first major of 2021, the ANA Inspiration.  The first of five majors on the Women’s Golf Calendar, this event reverts to its familiar slot, after it was last year moved to September due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19.  In what will be the 50th renewal of the event, and the 39th time it is contested as a major, many will be hoping for a dramatic finish. Last year, Mirim Lee outlasted two of the game’s brightest talents in Brooke Henderson and Nelly Korda in a playoff, making it the fourth time in the last six years this event has been decided by extra holes.  The event was not without controversy in 2020, with the famous “blue wall” housed behind the 18th green, which took a lot of the danger out of the hole.  This year the wall is gone, and the hole will play differently once again.  With her win last week and previous victory at the course, Inbee Park comes in as the favourite, closely followed by Jin Young Ko, Hyo Joo Kim and Nelly Korda. With some very familiar names also lurking, with a mix of great current and course form, this is sure to be an exciting spectacle, and one that should not be missed.  As ever we highly recommend you check out Tour-Tips.com for all the relevant statistics required to make informed selections each week. Andy and Brendan hobble into a new week after a tedious Sunday at an otherwise enjoyable WGC Match Play. They react to the baton boy, the motormouth, the Town Crier of Ponte Vedra moving into the Swedish Pancake Club. Andy delights in his self-admonishments that became the soundtrack of the event. Then they get into his modest goals for the rest of his career -- winning the grand slam and the Players and making and captaining every team event. The Kevin Na and Dustin Johnson contretemps from Friday is reviewed, as well as the run of sudden death playoffs, which feel like format flaw. Inbee Park, a true living legend, is praised for her win at Aviara, where there was a plea for relief from a fountain geyser. Joely D’s big win in Punta Cana and Danie van Tonder’s victory in Kenya are also covered. News covers a report that there may be no fans at the U.S. Opens in California.

Also, was there actually anyone critiquing him about wearing a hoodie or was this just a Twitter strawman? At the Shriners, they marvel at Martin Laird emerging from the Martin zone as well as some poorly placed TPC design service catch basins for his first win in seven years. Ernie Els and Trey Mullinax also get some love for their weekend wins before a lengthy news segment on the Matt Fitzpatrick vs. Bryson DeChambeau debate over what constitutes “skill.”

Greetings! And apologies for this delayed Presidents Day edition of the Shotgun Start. We begin with a deep discussion on our favorite Presidents and a plea for podcasting holidays. Then we get to Adam Scott’s impressive Sunday at Riviera and why a course like that promotes a talent like that at the top of the leaderboard. We review Scott’s career and his lament that his natural driving advantage has been stunted. We also address Tiger’s terrible weekend and the no good, very bad Sunday for CBS (as well as our favorite graphic inanity). Andy argues that the PGA Tour is not really concerned with venues because it might take away the spotlight from the players. The Riviera difference and how it amplifies the top talents and an event as a whole is explained. On other Tours, we shout out Inbee Park’s impressive work down under, the lack of starpower on the Champions Tour and how it should maybe fold up shop, and the wounded duck collecting his first OWGR points in two years. We conclude with Andy’s thoughts on attending the All Star Game (and Guy Fieri’s presence), raving about the format in contrast with the Tour Championship and offering up some skills challenges that could be golf’s version of All Star Saturday night.

#39 Experience and Imagination

Bruce Lee Podcast

Taky Kimura once wrote Bruce Lee a letter saying that the students at Bruce’s Gung Fu studio were asking for more techniques. Bruce wrote back that they didn’t need “more” but to go deeper into the practice and expand the students’ imagination: “First and foremost I would like to impress a most important rule of teaching in your mind and that is the economy of form. Follow this rule and you will never feel like you have to add more and more so-called sizzling techniques to keep your students interested.” “I hope I have impressed in your mind a most important rule of our style. Stick to the program I have given you, use variety, and do not worry too much that your student need more and more to stay with you. True only if they can do perfectly all that you’ve taught them. Remember, the idea that one has to come in thousands of times in order to perfect one judo throw. And of course, use your own experience and imagination, and you will do well. I have faith in you, Bruce.” Bruce was trying to communicate the difference between experience and imagination or another way he expressed this ideas was knowledge and knowing. “Knowledge is from a source, from an accumulation, from a conclusion, while knowing is a movement, is a constant movement. Therefore there’s no static state, no fixed point from which to act. Knowledge is binding but the movement of knowing is not binding.” When you’re stuck in a set pattern, this is where imagination comes in and asks: What if this is not true? Where can this lead instead? Imagination expands the experience to infinite possibilities. Imagination can feel really big or fantastical, but just by questioning something you are using your imagination and seeing something that wasn’t there before. “If you learn concepts, if you work for information, then you don’t understand, you only explain. When a man is thinking, he stands off from what he is trying to understand.” Go ahead and learn the knowledge—even master the knowledge, but also apply it to the real world, test it out and see how you can modify it to fit your own needs. Cut away all that is not essential until it fits you perfectly. Bruce Lee always customized ideas or practices to fit his own mind body and spirit. “Remember, I am no teacher. I can merely be a signpost for a traveler who is lost; it is up to you to decide on the direction. All I can offer is an experience, but never a conclusion. So even what I have said needs to be thoroughly examined by you.” Take Action: Test a formula or conclusion that you have. How can you customize it? Where are you finding yourself bored? Inquire as to why you’re bored. #AAHA (Awesome Asians and Hapas) This week our #AAHA is Inbee Park who is a South Korean professional golfer who plays on the LPGA Tour and the LPGA of Japan Tour. In 2013 and 2014 she was ranked #1 in the world and has won seven major championships in her career. She is the youngest player to win the Women’s US Open and the second player to win the Women’s PGA Championship three years in a row. In 2016, she won the first Olympic gold medal since 1900 in the women’s individual tournament. Inbee you’re killing it, and we think you’re awesome! #BruceLeeMoment This week’s #BruceLeeMoment comes from Ven: “After hearing your podcast on Bruce's Lee poetry I simply had to write to you both. I remember you both mentioning the importance of expressing yourself to the ones you love. Whether that be through writing a poem about that person or just generally breathing life into the feelings you have inside about them in some way. Well for me, I wrote a song about my long-time girlfriend of four years, LeCreshia. I released the song on my social music sites in honor of my true and genuine appreciation for her for sticking with me all these years.” Share your #AAHAs, #BruceLeeMoments, and #TakeAction progress with us at hello@brucelee.com Find the full version of our show notes at BruceLee.com/podcast

A big thank you to all that worked the event to make it a success as well as for all those that participated. More than $36,000 was raised.  Donations are still being taken at golfunited.org.  Jeff Babineau from Golfweek calls in to talk about his participation in the Charity Scramble. Jeff's team finished at 21-under-par and won the tournament.  Holly and Jeff talk about Sunday's finish at Bethpage where Reed won and Rickie Fowler faltered down the stretch losing the tournament as well as an automatic spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. Will talks with Jeff about Reed's momentum as he progresses through the FedEx Cup playoffs. Jeff mentions that the Ryder Cup selections deadline has been moved back and U.S. Captain Davis Love III has a couple more tournaments before he has to fill his final spots on the team. John Glozek, Publisher Golfing Long Island Magazine, chats with Holly and Will about The Barclays and the New York crowd. John was at the event and shares his thoughts on the first stage of the FedEx Cup. Phil Mickelson, who is a fan favorite in New York didn't fare as well as he and his fans would have liked. John said that watching the tourney on television doesn't give the viewers the full understanding of how tough the breaks are on the greens at Bethpage.  Steve Eubanks, Global Golf Post, talks about Ariya Jutanugarn's 5th win on the LPGA Tour. Steve compares her ball striking to that of a PGA Tour player. She over powers golf courses and fields. Will comments that she reminds him of the domination that Yani Tseng had in the LPGA a few years ago. Holly asks Steve about Inbee Park winning the gold medal in Rio. Holly mentions that Billy Horschel tied for 13th in the Barclays and won the FedEx Cup a couple years ago. The player who is playing well right now and didn't have his best "stuff" this past week is said Patrick Reed.

He also said that some of them are so much better than 20 years ago when they played on the PGA Tour now that they have the growth and have less pressures than before when they were trying to have a career and support their families. Holly asks Vartan about Rocco Mediate's recent win. Vartan says it's always a pleasure to interview someone like Rocco. When you are done and look over your notes you can write about 9 different stories.  Steve Eubanks, Global Golf Post calls in from the Seattle Washington area, the site of the second LPGA major of the season to talk with Holly and Will. Steve said that this is one of the most narrowest golf courses that he has ever seen. It's littered with pine trees. It's beautiful but tighter than a bowling alley and going to be a shot makers paradise this week. Anna Nordqvist won the latest event on the LPGA defending her ShopRite LPG Championship title.  Holly asks Steve about who are the favorites to win this week. Players like Lydia Ko and Ariya Jutanugarn. Steve says that Ariya is playing on another level right now and likens what she can do on the golf course to how Tiger used to be making shots that others couldn't even dream of making. Holly and Steve talk about Inbee Park looking to win her fourth consecutive Women's PGA Championship title, a feat no one has accomplished. Steve said that unfortunately Inbee's thumb injury will probably prevent her from doing that. She will have met the requirements.   Brentley Romine, Golfweek, calls in to wrap up the show. Brentley talks to Holly and Will about the Oregon Ducks winning the individual and team titles. Brentley talks about the advantages and disadvantages of playing in front of home fans.  Holly asks Brentley about a possible rules change letting substitutions play for injured players. Todd shares the story of Tiger and Jason playing together at The Open Championship.  Tiger missed the cut and Jason Day was playing well. Tiger looked Jason in the eyes and said "Go get them, you know what to do."  It meant a lot to Jason who idolized Tiger as a young kid.  Todd shared that Day felt lost as a kid when he lost his father to cancer. Day's mother took out a second mortgage to send Jason to a boarding school that focused on golf. Jason was reluctant to go but read Tiger's book. After reading the book Day decided to focus all his energy on golf.  Holly and Todd also talk about other top players like Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy. It's typically at the Congressional Golf Club in Bethesda, Md., but Bob stated that it can't be hosted there every year. The weather has been rainy and humid. Jeff and Bob talk about that it's the first time in 10 years, other than the Presidents Cup, that a PGA event has been at the RTJ course.  Jason Day was back in the winner's circle at the RBC Canadian Open. Hit 3 birdies in a row to overtake Bubba Watson. Jeff and Bob talk about Tiger Woods' performance of late and what the expectations should be given his swing changes and injuries. Bob says that Tiger needs to play these tournaments like no one cares what he shoots, but that's impossible.  But he needs the time on the course and maybe 10 tourneys down the road he emerges? Jeff asks Bob about Tiger's explanation of what is going on with his swing and the technical terminology he uses that the media and general public just can't grasp. He's having a hard time getting rid of his old swing habits. It would be nice for him to say that I'm not at the level I want to be at this time and I have to take the bad with the good. Bob feels that how Tiger approaches the reasoning behind his swing change and isn't as humble as he should be. Tiger thinks he can turn it around and he can find it.  Maybe he doesn't doubt creep in like most of us do. Does he think a major win is right around the corner? He thought so at the British Open and two holes in to the tournament it seemed that it was over. Bob talked about his article he wrote on Tiger and how it seems like Tiger is rushing back all the time instead of taking it slowly. He thinks Tiger should play some of the first 6 events at the beginning of the 2015-2016 season to gain some FedEx points and get back into things at a little slower pace. Adam Schupak, Golfweek, calls in to talk to Jeff from the 3M Championships in Minnesota and the Greats of Golf on Saturday Exhibition Scramble. It's like a Hall of Fame get together. The event is completely free. Players sign autographs on Saturday. Players tell stories about other players and needle one another.  Jeff talks to Adam about the 144th Open Championship. Jordan Spieth was the story to coming so close to winning the third leg of the Grand Slam and then missing the playoff by one stroke. Adam talks about the great play of Zach Johnson. Two major championships and 12 PGA Tour wins and probably punched his ticket to the Hall of Fame. Todd Lewis, Golf Channel, starts off the back nine portion of the show talking to Jeff about the Quicken Loans tournament, Rory McIlroy and other headlines in the world of golf. Billy Hurley III asks for help to find his missing father who went missing a couple weeks ago. Todd said they thought that Billy would talk about the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, Annapolis, Naval Academy and other things ... and when he Billy pleaded with the media to help find his father it was a little shocking. Todd spoke with the police department and found out that Billy has not heard from his father but the police have tracked his credit card use in TexArkana.  Jeff also talks to Todd about Sang-Moon Bae who has to leave the PGA Tour and serve his conscription in the South Korean military.  Maybe he thought the government would be lenient on him since the President's Cup is in Korea. Todd spoke with KJ Choi and found out that the public has turned away from Sang Moon Bae since he is trying not to do his public service. Steve Eubanks, Global Golf Post, calls in to wrap up the hour to talk about the Women's British Open in Turnberry Scotland, the LPGA's 4th major championship of the season. Steve feels that this is one of the biggest for the LPGA and always wonderful when this venue rolls around and see how the best women golfers in the world play such a classic golf course. Some of the best swings in golf come from the LPGA players. It's interesting to see how the best women in the game plod their way around the links golf course. Inbee Park is going for the career Grand Slam. She has some back trouble at the time and has "limped" in to the major. Steve said that back trouble is the worst for golfers as you don't know really exactly what you are doing.  Jeff and Steve discuss some of the LPGA golfers chances, like Michelle Wie, who is battling injuries and showed up to the tournament in a walking boot. Stacy Lewis is looking for her first major and it has been 54 tournaments since she won. Jeff mentions that Stacy has placed second many times and third as well.  Steve, who follows Stacey's game, said that Lewis' ball striking is the best that it has been in years.  Jeff asks Steve about In Gee Chun, U.S. Women's Open Champion, chances of winning the fourth major on the LPGA. Steve said that In Gee is not fluent in English yet, but when she is she will have a lot to talk about with the media. The South Korean golfer is a math genius even though her nickname on the tour is Dumbo.  Steve said it's because she hears everything that is going on around her and has nothing to do with her intelligence. As with any tournament, especially on a links course, the weather is a big factor and it's anybody's tournament to win.

Todd says that he has not heard any negative comments about Chambers Bay. They may not love it but don't hate it. But Todd says you have to have a positive frame of mind. Rory said that this is a pure links golf course and Todd feels that the European golfers have an advantage with their knowledge of keeping the ball low.  Phil Mickelson has a really good shot to win in Todd's mind, because the course is such an unknown and you have to be creative player and that fits Phil's game. Phil loves a thinking man golf's course. Jeff asks Todd about PGA Executive Director of USGA Mike Davis' request to have players familiarize themselves with the course prior to the tournament. This is a unique course and you have to learn the nuances of the course. The practice rounds have been taking a long time. A lot of information gathering.  Todd says that it is hard to predict a favorite or winner here. Rory hasn't played well lately but he has taken some time off and reboot and Todd likes his chances as well as Jordan Spieth's. The winner of the FedEx St. Jude Classic was Fabian Gomez his first on the PGA Tour. Jeff has a story on PGA Tour.com with a first look at the U.S. Open and Holly mentions that if you want to see some great Flyovers of the front 9 holes at Chambers Bay. Mike Purkey, Global Golf Post, calls in from Chambers Bay, and talks about the weather and the course. Says the players don't have any idea of what to do or expect because they don't know how Mike Davis will set up the course that has only been in existence for about 7 years. The only time the course will look green is first thing in the morning then it will turn tan and yellow. Mike says that it already looks like the green has been rubbed off the practice green. Holly asks Mike about Tiger's chances given his play of late. "Anybody's guess how he will do?" Mike likes Rory's chances and also thinks Rickie Fowler will do well at Chambers Bay. But he says that it may be one of the weakest U.S. Open field that Mike Purkey has seen in many, many years. Liesel Niehaus and Mike Quinn call in from South Africa to talk with Holly about their product, Swingclick, which is the perfect timing and tempo swing trainer that you can actually wear on the course. The Swingclick gives audible clicks on your swing at the three key points of your swing. Their product was one of the top products at the 25th Anniversary ING Spring Conference held at Mission Inn at Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla. Gary Gilchrist who has his academy there had a chance to test the Swingclick along with some of his other teachers. Gilchrist thinks that the Swingclick is one of the best training aids he has ever used. Holly and Jeff talk wrap up another hour of intelligent golf talk discussing the other professional tours. The KPMG Women's PGA Championship won by Inbee Park. It's a three-peat at the KPMG for Park, but the first win as the newly created "PGA" Women's Championship. Champions Tour Bernhard Langer won the Constellation Sr Players Championship by six strokes after taking an 8-shot lead into the final round. Colin Montgomerie had to be checked out for chest pains on Saturday night and everything checked out at the hospital. He was able to play Sunday and finished third.
