Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth

In this episode, Vanessa Feltz wows Gyles with some of the funniest stories he's ever heard on Rosebud: from a first kiss with Pete Tong by the pool in Lanzarote, to an illicit encounter with a stranger who was bowled over by the magnificence of her bosom... this show is full of laughs and brilliant anecdotes. Vanessa takes Gyles two generations back in the Feltz family, to her grandparents and great grandparents in the tenements of the East End, and brings these extraordinary characters to life. She tells Gyles about her own childhood in the 'Beverley Hills of North London', and about her school days, when she was known as 'Vanessa the Undresser', and could do alluring things with a red woollen scarf. She talks to Gyles about her career and why it's important to teach your grandchildren how to make a human chain. Vanessa's autobiography, 'Vanessa Bares All' is out now. It's hugely entertaining, and well worth reading. Thanks so much to Vanessa for this brilliant interview, and for making Gyles laugh so much. Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, I was lucky enough to interview Shae Feltz, CEO and founder of NOTICS, an IT service provider based in Minneapolis. Shae delves into his humble beginnings in Brainerd, Minnesota, where he learned early on that working for someone else wasn't for him. At just 16, Shae launched a mobile iPhone repair business, gaining valuable insights into marketing, sales, and fulfillment. He credits his early experiences with shaping his approach to business, including the sale of his first venture's client list and inventory. Through a combination of technical skill, hands-on problem-solving, and taking advantage of programs like PSEO to earn an associate degree while still in high school, Shae laid the foundation for his future success.Shae also discusses the genesis of NOTICS, which he co-founded in college, with its first customer coming from his iPhone repair business. The company initially grew through word-of-mouth referrals but eventually hit a plateau, prompting Shae and his team to dive into revenue-generating activities like cold email campaigns. Despite industry challenges, Shae emphasizes the importance of continuous learning, personalized outreach, and adapting strategies to remain competitive. Get to know more about Shae Feltz and discover his reflections on balancing risk-taking with skill-building, as well as the lessons learned from early jobs that serve as valuable advice for aspiring entrepreneurs in this episode of The First Customer!Guest Info:NOTICShttps://www.notics.ioShae Feltz' LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/shae-feltz/Connect with Jay on LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/jayaigner/The First Customer Youtube Channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@thefirstcustomerpodcastThe First Customer podcast websitehttps://www.firstcustomerpodcast.comFollow The First Customer on LinkedInhttp://www.linkedin.com/company/the-first-customer-podcast/

When you experience adversity in life, do you often find yourself pushing yourself to go forward, rationalizing that others have it worse so you just need to get over it?I know I have, and so has today's guest. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.09.05.284281v1?rss=1 Authors: van der Feltz, C., Nikolai, B., Schneider, C., Paulson, J. C., Fu, X., Hoskins, A. A. Abstract: Genetic, biochemical, and structural studies have elucidated the molecular basis for spliceosome catalysis. Splicing is RNA catalyzed and the essential snRNA and protein factors are well-conserved. However, little is known about how non-essential components of the spliceosome contribute to the reaction and modulate the activities of the fundamental core machinery. Ecm2 is a non-essential yeast splicing factor that is a member of the Prp19-related complex of proteins. Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structures have revealed that Ecm2 binds the U6 snRNA and is entangled with Cwc2, another non-essential factor that promotes a catalytically active conformation of the spliceosome. These structures also indicate that Ecm2 and the U2 snRNA likely form a transient interaction during 5' splice site (SS) cleavage. We have characterized genetic interactions between ECM2 and alleles of splicing factors that alter the catalytic steps in splicing. In addition, we have studied how loss of ECM2 impacts splicing of pre-mRNAs containing non-consensus or competing SS. Our results show that ECM2 functions during the catalytic stages of splicing. It facilitates the formation and stabilization of the 1st-step catalytic site, promotes 2nd-step catalysis, and permits alternate 5' SS usage. We propose that Cwc2 and Ecm2 can each fine-tune the spliceosome active site in unique ways. Their interaction network may act as a conduit through which splicing of certain pre-mRNAs, such as those containing weak or alternate splice sites, can be regulated. On December 26, 2016, 58-year-old Lori Feltz disappeared from Cynthiana, KY. When Lori was young, she was in a terrible car accident. This accident killed her younger brother, who was a passenger in the vehicle, and Lori suffered a traumatic brain injury. This accident would change the course of her life forever. Lori, as a result of this injury, had intellectual disabilities, short term memory loss, seizures and required a caregiver to help her with daily tasks and make sure she took her medication.Around 9 AM on December 26, 2016, Lori was last seen leaving her house on Hick Hardy Road to walk up a path to go help her sister at the home next door. The path was only about 300 yards and this was a route she would walk on a regular basis for exercise. However, she never made it to see her sister. Her sister, Tricia, was expecting Lori and became concerned when she didn’t arrive but she couldn’t find Lori anywhere. Lori’s family members believe that it is possible that she became disoriented on her walk and flagged down a passing motorist to ask for a ride, but so far there have been no signs or clues to indicate what truly happened to Lori that day.If you have any information regarding the disappearance of Lori Feltz please call the Kentucky State Police at 859-428-1212.You can follow Lori's case on Facebook at Finding Justice for Lori. This episode was co-researched and written by Marissa Jones and Erika Gwynn. Gus van der Feltz - The Institute of Vertical Farming - High-Tech Farming for an Urbanizing World

Vertical farming is a practice that involves the cultivation of crops on multiple levels in a fully enclosed environment equipped with optimal artificial lighting and an optimal atmosphere. The results? Fresher, better, and healthier crops that are grown without the use of pesticides and are available to those who may otherwise be unable to access them--especially those who live in urban environments. Gus van der Feltz is the head of member relations at the Institute of Vertical Farming, which works to both promote and advance the industry of vertical farming, as well as look after the interests of its members. This includes ensuring that employees receive quality training, and that operations remain compliant with rules and regulations. The benefits of vertical farming include the ability to closely control the temperature and lighting in various growing systems, and in some cases, increase yield. For example, under the best possible circumstances, a head of lettuce can be grown outdoors in about 60 days; in a vertical farming environment, the same head of lettuce could be grown in about 35 days. In addition, the taste profile of vertically-farmed crops has been recognized as superior to those grown outdoors in an uncontrolled environment. But at least one challenge remains: lowering the cost of these high-quality crops. Hit play for the full discussion.
