Why Listen: Billy is a professional golfer, the first Naval Academy graduate to earn a PGA TOUR card, which he has done for the last seven years. The more I learn about Billy's journey, the more I'm blown away by what he achieved. In a field that is crowded and incredibly competitive, Billy has succeeded despite having five years where - instead of focusing 100% on golf like his peer set - he was serving in the military. In this interview we talk about cultivating a mindet of excellence - even though serving as a Surface Warfare Officer didn't directly relate to his aspirations as a golfer - he focused on it 100% and did the best job he could. We talk about making sacrifices and how to balance that with being present with one's family. We talk about what life is like on the PGA Tour and more. About Billy: Billy Hurley III was a member of the victorious American team in the 2005 Walker Cup and served as captain of the 2004 Palmer Cup Team. He won seven collegiate golf titles at the Naval Academy, was named 2004 Patriot League Player of the Year and was ranked the #6 best amateur in the world. Billy was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy, serving as a Surface Warfare Officer for five years. After his Naval service, Billy turned his focus to golf. He earned his place on the Web.com Tour in 2011, finishing the season in 25th place and becoming the first Naval Academy graduate to earn a PGA TOUR Card. He has continued to be a strong competitor on the TOUR, winning the 2016 Quicken Loans National – a Tiger Woods-hosted tribute to military personnel. With the win, Billy qualified for his first PGA and Masters Championships.
Billy Hurley III graduated from the United States Naval Academy, where he played golf before becoming a Surface Warfare Officer and professional golfer on the PGA Tour. Hurley speaks of the subtle differences between his good and bad times on the golf course and his lessons learned in his time in the Navy that transitioned to other areas of his life, his advice for a young person at the Naval Academy, and his foundation: “The Billy Hurley III Foundation was established to support, honor and benefit a vital group of unsung heroes: military families” (BillyHurley3.com).“Billy grew up in Leesburg, Virginia, the oldest of four children. His father, Bill, introduced him to golf at a young age, and his mother, Cheryl, supported his growing passion by driving him to countless tournaments. During his senior year at Loudoun County High School, he was named to the all-state team and ranked third in Virginia. After his naval service ended in 2009, Billy turned his focus to golf. He earned his place on the Web Dot Com Tour in 2011, finishing the season in 25th place and therefore winning his PGA Tour Card. He was the first Naval Academy graduate to achieve this milestone. For the next 3 years Billy played in numerous events, finishing 5th at the Honda Classic, tied for 4th at the Greenbrier Classic, and qualifying for his first U.S. Open & Open Championship. He struggled during the 2015 season, ultimately losing his PGA Tour card. But he rebounded quickly in 2016 with a win at Quicken Loans National, a Tiger Woods-hosted tribute to military personnel. With that, Billy qualified for his first PGA and Masters Championships. As of April 2017, Billy is the only U.S. Military veteran on the PGA Tour. He lives in Annapolis, Maryland with his wife Heather and their three children Will, Jacob & Madison. The Hurleys are involved with various charitable organizations, especially those focused on supporting military personnel & their families and those committed to improving the lives of children & young adults” (BillyHurley3.com).Hosts: Tyler Buchholz and Colin KirkBilly Hurley III Website and FoundationBob Feller Act of Valor Award FoundationSupport the show (https://customcoinholders.com/product/walk-of-heroes/)

When he came to the podcast in season 2, Merritt had won the 2015 Quicken Loans National, finishing just ahead of Rickie Fowler, and was establishing himself as a top 100 player. Merritt rode the Moonlight bump to a second PGA win in 2018 at the Barbosal Championship in Kentucky. That win was made more difficult by pain and pressure in his left arm that made even swinging a club painful. Days after winning the Barbasol Merritt had surgery to remove a blood clot that stretched from his chest to his elbow. Six days after surgery Merritt was teeing off at the 2018 PGA Championship. The discovery of the blood clot and surgery led to the diagnosis of thoracic outlet syndrome and the removal of a rib in January in 2019. Merritt is fully recovered and competing on the Tour as it comes back from COVID related cancellations. His last finish was tying for 24th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March and he most recently competed at the Charles Schwab Challenge last week. Wow, Francesco Molinari burst into the winner's circle on the PGA Tour in 2018 with wins at the British Open and the Quicken Loans National, he then followed that with dominating play at the Ryder Cup, where he and Tommy Fleetwood teamed up to dismantle their American counterparts with relative ease. And now with a win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, it is safe to say Francesco has found something. We dive into the data that got Francesco this win, we discuss the steps he took to improve his game to a new level of performance, and we get ready for another great week of golf, as the Players tees off on Thursday. Matt and Steve are talking about this week in sports updates, including: Riverhounds had a Nil-Nil tie with the Charleston Battery, but it looks like it wasn't that exciting of a match. The Hounds are on the road to Louisville City. They are currently tied for second in the group with Louisville with 25 points each. Matt gives us some World Cup updates. In PGA news from Connecticut at TPC River Highlands Bubba Watson had a hell of a third and fourth round to come out with the win. Watson had -17 total shooting -7 on the final round. The tour goes to TPC Potomac at Avenel in Potomac MD northwest of DC for the Quicken Loans National. Tiger is on the green, but a lot of other big names are not. There's no DJ, Spieth, Kepca, Mickelson. We're counting down to the Open. Penguins sign Bryan Rust to a four-year deal, leaving them with $4.2 mill to spend in cap space. It's likely that Oleksiak and Sheahan will get those nods. The Pens also signed Sprong and Simone. Crosby has reached out to Kunitz, and it looks like Kunitz and the Pens have shown mutual interest in another stint. The Pens are looking to get him for less than $2 mill. Kunitz will be 39 at the start of the season. Le'veon Bell and the Steelers report that they are a lot closer than they were last season on making a deal. Both side hope to come to an agreement before the July 16th deadline. Every year the NFL posts a Top 100 list for the upcoming season. The top ten this year are: Brady, Brown, Went, Jones, Bell, Gurley, Donald, Brees, V.Miller, and Rodgers. The Pirates are supposedly shopping Cervelli, Dickerson, Harrison, Mercer, and Freese. Shopping around is an effort to cut payroll because of the drastic drop in attendance this season. Neil Huntington has said that if the fans don't come out, that they can't afford to put a team on the field and the roster will be weakened because of the fans. Huntington said that the team will add pieces at the deadline if the attendance picks up. The team is worth $1.2 bill, and profited $86 mill between 2016 and 2017. Nutting has petitioned the PA State Gaming Board for tax revenue stemming from the new sports booking that is expectied to open before the start of Football season.
