Ryan Higgins has had a strong career working at some of the best golf courses in the Mid Atlantic. He recently became the “Head Guy” at TPC Potomac, outside of Washington DC, perhaps the toughest place in the country to grow cool season grasses. Ryan worked with Pete Wendt for several years, most recently as a golf course superintendent at Congressional Country Club where he was able to see their recent reconstruction project. Now he is on his own as the lead manager and we talked about what that is like and how he managed the change. One of the most powerful comments he made in this conversation was, “We are in the solutions business! If something is wrong fix the problem, don't just cover it up". We talked about his interview process and the steps he took once he started the job.Visit EarthWorks at: https://www.earthworksturf.com Podcasts: https://www.earthworksturf.com/earthworks-podcasts/ 2 Minute Turf Talks: https://www.earthworksturf.com/2-minute-turf-talks/
One of the best stories in DC-area sports the last few years has been not just the resurrection, but the play of the Howard University Golf team. Leading the way on the course has been Gregory Odom Jr who has won several events since transferring into the program from Memphis, and got the opportunity to compete in the Wells Fargo Championship at TPC Potomac in 2022. While Steph Curry's highly publicized donation got the Howard Golf Program off the ground and thrust into the national spotlight, the play by Odom and his teammates under the guidance of Coach Sam Puryear has helped them stay there. He joins the podcast to talk about his journey from Memphis to Howard, his relationship with Coach Sam Puryear, the success he's had on the course, and what it's like playing with the national attention of a superstar's commitment to the program. Max Homa wins the Wells Fargo Championship at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm by two strokes. Sergio Garcia puts the PGA Tour on notice after a rules official starting running his ass up on the "search clock". He indicates he too may be leaving the PGA to join LIV. Aside from the Saudi controversy the LIV Tour does appear to be very FUN. Team events elevate golf and we are excited to see how this whole thing plays out. Max Homa, that guy from twitter who just happens to be a PGA Tour Pro, became a repeat winner at the Wells Fargo Championship, where sleeping with the lead didn't work out well for the guys. Hosts Alex Lauzon and Michael Russell look at the now 4-time champ Homa, and how some of the other pros fared at TPC Potomac (1:36). Overheard during the week was Sergio Garcia, getting very upset about his apparent remaining time on the PGA Tour, perhaps before bolting to the LIV Tour (5:47). With a week to go before the PGA Championship, 7 of the World's top 15 are in the field for the AT&T Byron Nelson, making for a fun weekend in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex (8:52). In Tuned In, Michael is, arguably, being a bad husband as he watches his wife paint the house, while Alex is still fuming at the Spring Baking Championship as the season comes to a close (10:50). This week's guest is Pat Monahan, the lead singer of the multi-GRAMMY and Billboard Award-winning band Train. Pat chats with Alex about Train's music and new album, AM Gold (out May 20), how golf influenced one of his songs, and shares stories from playing in the AT&T Pro-Am at Pebble Beach and forging friendships with PGA Tour champions like Jason Day (13:48). Alex shares his pessimistic views on the Celtics chances against the defending champion Bucks in the NBA Playoffs, but Michael holds out hope (40:25). As Alex and Michael #AlwaysEndWithFood, Alex heads to the midwest staple Culver's, while Michael dives head first into baking in a more permanent setting (41:17). We are back this week with the tournament recap of the Wells Fargo at TPC Potomac. Great event with the eventual leader Max Homa, some brutal weather, Rory continuing to trend upwards, Jason Day still battling to put four good rounds together, and lastly Keegan Bradley showing some form as he does just three or four times a year. It's a punchy Monday episode full of energy after a Sunday spent with moms. Andy and Brendan get into the test of TPC Potomac against a middling field. Then it's on to media darling and 4-time winner Max Homa, his perspective, and how the expectations get raised from here. There's also an unexpected segment defending Keegan Bradley, a frequent punching bag. Sergio Garcia's latest outburst is dissected, with a focus on what it means for LIV Golf taking on the temperamental Spaniard. This leads to further discussion about LIV, its latest recruits, and a scoop about the number of releases requested for the London event and the cheeky end-around cited. The Pissbear's redemption story is covered as is a strong week on the Social Security Tour. Finally, they close with some good words about the Baton Boy.
Max Homa edged out Keegan Bradley at the Wells Fargo Championship. What did we learn about Homa? What did we learn about Bradley? How about Rory McIlroy? There's also a discussion of the weird PGL memo that was sent out to the world. Andy has some thoughts on Matt Wolff's struggles and first-round lead at TPC Potomac. Then they're joined by Shane Ryan, whose book on the Ryder Cup will come out next week (pre-order here). They get into a wide range of interesting and amusing topics related to the matches, from its future prospects, the PGA Tour getting involved on the Euro side via the strategic alliance, Phil's bencing at Whistling Straits, and some of the biggest surprises in researching and writing the book. A weak field allowed Jon Rahm to cruise to victory at the new-to-the-PGA-Tour Mexico Open at Vidanta, where Alex and Michael's picks couldn't keep up with Rahm's consistent play (1:48). Lydia Ko injected some much needed honesty in women's sports when she openly and casually discussed what happens to her body during her period (5:02). As the PGA Championship is only a few weeks away, Tiger Woods heads to Southern Hills to check out the course, and Alex wonders if the stalker-like coverage is over the top, while Michael wonders if Tiger is getting preferential treatment ahead of the season's second major (6:56). This weekend's PGA Tour stop is a familiar tournament but a temporary venue, as The Wells Fargo Championship heads to TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, where a more exciting field is anchored by Rory McIlroy (9:12). In Tuned In, Michael is learning all about Julia Child in the new HBO Max series Julia, while Alex is ready as the final season of Better Call Saul comes out (at last!) (11:56). This week's guest is legendary sports broadcaster Joe Tessitore, known for calling games on ABC and ESPN for college football, the blow-by-blows for boxing, and sitting alongside Rob Riggle as part of ABC's Holey Moley broadcast team. Alex chats with Joe about the new season of Holey Moley, working alongside Kermit the Frog, and what was the loudest sporting event he's ever worked at (13:55). Alex and Michael make quick work of the other major sporting news, including the NBA Playoffs, NFL Draft, and the young MLB season (40:19). As the guys #AlwaysEndWithFood, Alex is enjoying a new chicken sandwich at Texas institution Whataburger, while Michael is digging into the first watermelon of the season (43:28). Matt and Steve are talking about this week in sports updates, including: Riverhounds had a Nil-Nil tie with the Charleston Battery, but it looks like it wasn't that exciting of a match. The Hounds are on the road to Louisville City. They are currently tied for second in the group with Louisville with 25 points each. Matt gives us some World Cup updates. In PGA news from Connecticut at TPC River Highlands Bubba Watson had a hell of a third and fourth round to come out with the win. Watson had -17 total shooting -7 on the final round. There's no DJ, Spieth, Kepca, Mickelson. We're counting down to the Open. Penguins sign Bryan Rust to a four-year deal, leaving them with $4.2 mill to spend in cap space. It's likely that Oleksiak and Sheahan will get those nods. The Pens also signed Sprong and Simone. Crosby has reached out to Kunitz, and it looks like Kunitz and the Pens have shown mutual interest in another stint. The Pens are looking to get him for less than $2 mill. Kunitz will be 39 at the start of the season. Le'veon Bell and the Steelers report that they are a lot closer than they were last season on making a deal. Both side hope to come to an agreement before the July 16th deadline. Every year the NFL posts a Top 100 list for the upcoming season. The top ten this year are: Brady, Brown, Went, Jones, Bell, Gurley, Donald, Brees, V.Miller, and Rodgers. The Pirates are supposedly shopping Cervelli, Dickerson, Harrison, Mercer, and Freese. Shopping around is an effort to cut payroll because of the drastic drop in attendance this season. Neil Huntington has said that if the fans don't come out, that they can't afford to put a team on the field and the roster will be weakened because of the fans. Huntington said that the team will add pieces at the deadline if the attendance picks up. The team is worth $1.2 bill, and profited $86 mill between 2016 and 2017. Nutting has petitioned the PA State Gaming Board for tax revenue stemming from the new sports booking that is expectied to open before the start of Football season.
