Writer Nell Frizzell has spent years agonising about whether climate change should stop her from having a second child. She invites listeners to join her as she strives to make an intensely personal decision about her future. As the biological and doomsday clocks tick away, Nell calls upon friends, campaigners and experts at different stages of life to explain their reproductive decisions, in the hope that the path to a conclusion will reveal itself. Nell speaks to Dr Matt Winning, comedian and author of Hot Mess, a book about raising a baby and understanding climate change. She also hears from musician Blythe Pepino, who formed and then disbanded the campaign group BirthStrike, and Les Knight, a campaigner for the extinction of the human race. Finally, she interviews reproductive epidemiologist Dr Shanna Swan, whose book Count Down predicts the potential end of natural conception. SFU Sociology and Anthropology Professor Amanda Watson, joins Alyha Bardi to speak about her recent book, 'The Juggling Mother: Coming Undone in an Age of Anxiety.' Amanda speaks about our cultural fascination with the figure of the juggling mother, explores the ableism and racism behind this depiction, and scrutinizes the immense pressures of motherhood that are often ignored — from juggling work and home life, to breastfeeding, to acting unencumbered at work. Amanda also discusses depictions of mothers as the “gender neutral CEO” — and explores how misogyny, white liberal feminism, and gender socialization, have led us to accept these very ideas involving motherhood that do more harm than good. The episode ends with Amanda and four working mothers sharing some advice with working mothers, present and future. They speak to their visions for making work better serve parents, reshaping cultural ideas of motherhood to alleviate pressure, and placing greater value on the labour of mothers. In recent months, the notion of family planning as a means of fighting climate change has emerged from the eco-warrior fringe and entered the mainstream public conversation. Last winter, on the Facebook page, BirthStrike, a group of about 650 people based in Britain, have pledged to forgo having children because of “the severity of the ecological crisis.” One post BirthStrike post shared the following: “For several months after her daughter was born in 1991, Lori Day had terrifying anxiety dreams about failing to protect her baby. Decades later, the recurring nightmares about her daughter's safety have returned, triggered by the prospect of catastrophic climate change", said Day, 56, an educational consultant in Newburyport, Mass. Though Day used to yearn for grandchildren, she wrote to the BirthStrike group page on Facebook that her environmental concern has grown, and she is now relieved that her daughter does not plan to become a parent. “I would be worried sick,” Day said. “It would haunt me.” Are you planning a family? Do you believe that climate change is one more thing to worry about as a potential mother, grandmother? If yes, that one more thing becomes one more thing to add to your list of what? A ticking biological clock? Fertility issues? Genetic challenges? Addiction? Marriage? Cancer? Heart disease? Gender issues? Yeah, we as women “got it going on” in the space called worry. So, let's zoom out or in depending on your perspective lens and reflect, maybe restore, or reposition our thoughts if not behaviors with someone who knows, who lives up close and personal with the vulnerabilities women wear and how they manifest physically, mentally, and emotionally. Dr. Gloria Ivy Crowe, dedicated and expert OB/GYN, joins us for another informative and authentic conversation to help women better understand how to care for the unique and notable people they are.  Click below and learn things.

Cos capitalism, cos inhofes, cos LIFE, it's all but impossible to be the planet's BFF most of the time. Having kids arguably makes that task even harder. BUT, despite the onslaught of baby marketing, and despite grandparents-to-be going all in for conspicuous consumption, there are loads of practical things parents - new ones, not very new ones, and expectant ones - can do to lessen kids' impact on poor ol' Mother Earth.* It is Mothers' Day, after all. To hear how it's done, we're joined by Jen Gale, author of 'The Sustainable(ish) Guide To Green Parenting', a new book which does precisely what it says on the tin. Pleasingly, neither the tin, the book, nor Jen pretends this stuff is easy, or always possible, or that any parent should feel bad for sometimes falling short. Amen to that. The book is out on 18 March. You can pre-order here or in all the usual places. *Obviously, not having kids, or having fewer kids, will reduce one's footprint. We purposely don't cover that here, because a) that's not what Jen's book is about, and b) we've done so previously in episodes #139 ('Birthstrike') and #65 ('Babies'). Check 'em out. More and more young women are declaring their intention not to conceive children. BirthStrike, Conceivable Future and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have all made headlines on this point. Erika and Dave unpack the issues surrounding womanhood without motherhood in this conversation with the author of the new book, Childfree by Choice, sociologist Amy Blackstone. Amy is a professor of Sociology at the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center at University of Maine. Her research into the childfree choice has appeared in a variety of academic and media sources including the New York Times, National Public Radio, and other national, regional, and international outlets. Childfree by Choice: The Movement Redefining Family & Creating a New Age of Independence is a definitive investigation into the history and current growing movement of adults choosing to forgo parenthood: what it means for our society, economy, environment, perceived gender roles, and legacies, and how understanding and supporting all types of families can lead to positive outcomes for parents, non-parents, and children alike. Amy writes about her own experience as a childfree woman, as well as the stories of other childfree men and women, and uses academic research to shed light into the choice that remains culturally misunderstood. As more people are choosing to forgo parenthood today than ever before, it’s important to ask how this affects our society, economy, and environment. We dig deep into this topic and hear from Amy herself about whether she thinks we should keep having kids, and more about her view on the population-environment connection, an area Erika hopes to study in graduate school. Being childfree herself, Erika is a firm advocate, and hopes to add more positive attention to the childfree choice in the media as co-host for the GrowthBusters podcast and in her future research endeavors. Dropping birth rates are good news, not a “slump” we should hope is temporary. Yet news reports, headlines and commentaries about this are consistently displaying a pro-growth bias. We have your back. The Overpopulation Podcast team has mallets in hand. In this episode we continue playing whack-a-mole with instances of overpopulation disinformation. NPR, the Wall Street Journal, Grist, Fox News’ Tucker Carlson, and Facebook’s Undivided Attention video series all get a whacking in this episode. On the good news front, syndicated columnist Froma Harrop, Miley Cyrus, Prince Harry and the BirthStrike movement get nods of (modest) approval from the team. On Prince Harry’s declaration that he and Meghan will have no more than two children, podcast host Dave Gardner advises Harry to stop at one child – particularly to set an example. We just have to share this quote from Froma Harrop’s column in the show notes: “What makes for a strong society is healthy people, prosperous people and happy people — not more people. Americans can put low birthrates at the bottom of their worry list.” - Froma Harrop The team also briefly discusses the UN IPCC report, Climate and Land, which joins the growing list of dire warnings about our destruction of life support systems. In response, Dave suggests we “rally” the public to stop growing the population, rather than rallying technologists to try to feed 10.9 billion people in 2100. This is Scott Amyx with today’s Climate Change Flash Briefing. There is a fringe 200-member activists group called BirthStrike that believe our planet has passed the irreversible tipping point. The members are choosing to not have children in response to the threat of climate change. The movement recently garnered media attention after Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stated that “it is basically a scientific consensus that the lives of our children are going to be very difficult.” She then asked the question if it still ok to have children. The movement is not about population control but a moral decision to have children and raise them on a planet with an uncertain future.   What are your thoughts about the movement? Are they taking it too far? Or is this what it takes to grab the attention of the masses for collective action?

Would you forgo having children because the future looks too bleak? A growing group of 'birthstrikers' have decided just that, speficially declaring "not to bear children due to the severity of the ecological crisis and the current inaction of governing forces in the face of this existential threat". It's clearly the most profound of personal decisions, woven through with complexity and heartache. Jim Geraghty of National Review and Greg Corombos of Radio America welcome a Politico report showing that even if liberals soaked "the rich" they wouldn't come anywhere close to paying for single-payer health care or the Green New Deal.  They also shake their heads as testimony from former FBI attorney Lisa Page suggests the FBI was considering whether to recommend a federal charge against Hillary Clinton over her mishandling of classified emails but the Justice Department made it clear it had no intention of pursuing the case.  And Jim offers his hilarious assessment of climate change activists refusing to have children until the world gets serious about climate change.

It is axiomatic, within that tradition, that man and woman alike are made in the image of that God. We also transform chaos into Being, through speech. We transform the manifold possibilities of the future into the actualities of past and present. To tell the truth is to bring the most habitable reality into Being. Truth builds edifices that can stand a thousand years. Truth feeds and clothes the poor, and makes nations wealthy and safe. Truth reduces the terrible complexity of a man to the simplicity of his word, so that he can become a partner, rather than an enemy. Truth makes the past truly past, and makes the best of the future’s possibilities. Truth is the ultimate, inexhaustible natural resource. It’s the light in the darkness. See the truth. Tell the truth>’ Jordan Peterson
