In this episode, Mike Elam continues his story of diving into the legend of Buford Pusser and why many of the legends around the man don't add up. There's also a discussion of socks, shopping, and shrinkage. Check it out. It's a good one.
Buford Pusser, the sheriff the 1973 Movie "Walking Tall" was based on, inspired countless men to pursue careers in law enforcement. Known for being a no-nonsense man with an unbreakable moral code, legend has it that he cleaned up McNairy County, Tennessee, freeing it from the grips of criminal enterprises. What if the legends are false, though? Bentonville native Mike Elam long looked up to Buford, but when he started researching the man he so admired, he discovered that the truth didn't match up with the legend. Listen to him discuss his research and findings with the crew in an episode you don't want to miss.
Sheriff, a word, and position that derive from the old English term Shire-Reeve. This person was responsible for managing a shire or county in England. The practice began sometime before 700 A.D. and when America was colonized by European settlers we brought the concept with us. Today in the US, 48 out of the 50 states have sheriffs. Alaska doesn't have counties and therefore has no sheriff's and Connecticut replaced its sheriff system with State Marshalls in 2000. In 46 out of the 48 states with the sheriff's system the sheriffs are elected officials and mostly serve 4-year terms. The duties of sheriff vary from state to state and even from county to county. In the south and western states sheriffs are seen as the constitutional law enforcement officer and the position is held in high esteem. Also, the more rural the county the more likely the sheriff is the primary law enforcement agency. Sheriff's are also typically responsible for the jail and court systems in their county making the position difficult and challenge on a number of levels. For Sheriff's, leadership is an important skill. Not only must they lead their officers and civilian employees, but they must also lead in the jails, the courts, and because of the political nature of the position, in the communityAs for notable people that have held the position of sheriff in American history it's an interesting list. From historical figures like Bat Masterson, Daniel Boone, and Grover Cleveland to controversial ones like Buford Pusser, Grady Judd, and Joe Arpaio.I realized if I wanted to discuss leadership in law enforcement, I would be remiss if I didn't talk to at least one Sheriff.I had a perfect candidate in mind.[Insert Intro]Sheriff Chris Lane was elected on November 8, 2022 as the 59th Sheriff of Bartholomew County IN Sheriff Lane has dedicated over 30 years to law enforcement. During this time, he has served in a variety of positions, including patrol, supervision, administration, and investigations. He was appointed as Chief Deputy of the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department from 2015 - 2022. Sheriff Lane is also a 2019 graduate of the FBI National Academy, joining an elite group that makes up less than 1% of America's law enforcement community. And the most important part of his background…we went to the police academy together.

Pauline was a married mother of 3, her husband, Bufford was a police officer in McNairy County Tennessee near the Tennessee Kentucky line along I40., eventually becoming sheriff. Pauline was married before, having a son named Michael and a daughter Dian Vance. After growing up in Virginia and living in Chicago, Pauline met Bufford at a wrestling match. Bufford started off in wrestling. Buford Pusser was born in Finger, McNairy County, Tennessee, on December 12, 1937, his father was the police chief of Adamsville, Tennessee. Buford Pusser was a high-school football and basketball player and was 6 feet 6 inches tall. He joined the United States Marine Corps when he graduated from high school. His service ended and he was given a medical discharge for asthma. In 1957, he moved to Chicago, where he was a local wrestler known as "Buford The Bull". He married Pauline Mullins on December 5, 1959. Pusser returned home in 1962. He was Adamsville's police chief and constable from 1962 to 1964. After the sheriff James Dickey was killed in an auto accident, Pusser was elected sheriff, becoming the youngest sheriff in Tennessee's history. Pusser promptly began trying to eliminate crime and mob/mafia groups like the Dixie Mafia and the State Line Mob.Pusser was ineligible for re-election in 1970 due to the term limit then in effect. He was defeated in his bid for sheriff in 1972. Pusser blamed the loss to incumbent Sheriff Clifford Coleman in part on the controversy surrounding the making of the semibiographical movie Walking Tall. “Walking Tall” was a movie based on Bufford in the 1970's then a remake happened in 2004 featuring Dwayne the rock Johnson and Johnny Knoxville. The early morning of Aug. 12, 1967, the couple was heading to a disturbance call near the Tennessee-Mississippi line when a vehicle pulled up alongside theirs and began firing into the car with a military rifle, according to The Historical Marker Database and McNairy County Historical Society. According to Pusser, his phone rang before dawn on the morning of August 12, 1967, informing him of a disturbance on New Hope Road in McNairy County; Pusser responded and his wife Pauline rode along. Ride along were allowed then, but usually happened in daylight hours on a slow Sunday. Some believe he got a call around 2 am and where the shooting happened was only 20 minutes away from his house and the call came in of the shooting around 4 am. Shortly after they passed the New Hope Methodist Church, a fast-moving car came alongside theirs and the occupants opened fire, killing Pauline and leaving Pusser for dead. Doctors said he was struck on the left side of his jaw by at least two, or possibly three, rounds from a .30-caliber carbine. He spent 18 days in the hospital before returning home, and needed several more surgeries. Pusser died on August 21, 1974, of injuries sustained in a one-car automobile accident four miles west of Adamsville. Earlier that day, he had contracted with Bing Crosby Productions in Memphis to portray himself in the sequel to Walking Tall. That evening, returning home alone from the McNairy County Fair in his specially modified Corvette, Pusser struck an embankment at high speed that ejected him from the vehicle. The car caught fire and burned.56 years after Pauline's death, in February of 2024 they exhumed her body. No water was coming out of the casket so TBI is looking at the body for any other injuries. They weren't in a wreck, so the only wounds on her body should be the shot to her head. No reports have been made public at this time, but we will keep you up to date. By the 1960s, organized crime gangs were well and truly already becoming a presence across the north of the United States, as underworld figures fought for sole control over highly lucrative gambling, illegal alcohol, and prostitution rings. Down south, things were done a slightly different way. But even though one criminal network in particular didn't have a strict code, this didn't make them any less dangerous. Based out of Biloxi, MI, they soon monopolized the control of many illicit activities across numerous states where big profits could be made, but only by those willing to be uncompromisingly ruthless. Hello, today I talk about the final chapter in the Walking Tall trilogy. The movie shows how Buford lives a year after his wife's death and how he tries to cope with it. Also, Buford loses his job as sheriff after a lawyer fixes the election so that he loses the job of sheriff and his enemies want revenge. Including a man who Buford beats and sends his son Robby to an orphanage. But once the man named O.Q. teal and his brother are let out they attack Buford's car and attack Buford, and after Buford dispatches them the new sheriff asks the townspeople if they did in fact see if Buford was attacked but the townspeople say no. Leading to Buford's friend and lawyer Lloyd Tatum to say to Buford they forget what you did for them really easily. Later in the movie, Buford's life story is made into a film in which he breaks down during the showing of his wife's death in the movie having to relive it in the theater. Also, Buford buys minibikes for his kids and a nice Corvette for himself. Finally, the ending shows him dying after he loses control of his car and is ejected from the car. Some say he was murdered and the movie makes you wonder if the same people he fought against came back to finish the job they once tried to finish before and failed. The end. Buford Pusser, a former Marine and wrestler, became Sheriff of his small, hometown county of McNairy, Tennessee in 1964. He had brawn, brains, the heart and fierceness of a lion, but could be gentle as a lamb. Buford took on the State Line Mob and Dixie Mafia as he cleaned up the county. During his life, he experienced a mixture of major triumphs and heart wrenching tragedies, which were portrayed in movies, tv series, and books. Episode #10 of the Motorcycle Knuckle Busters podcast. Enjoy our next guest Carl Pusser. Carl Pusser can be found at his motorcycle shop, Walkin' Tall Cycles. Pusser, an East Peoria native, is the nephew of the famed Buford Pusser, a sheriff in McNairy County, Tenn., whose one-man war on all things illegal became the basis of two Hollywood movies called “Walking Tall.” The 1973 original, which his nephew greatly prefers, starred Joe Don Baker. The 2004 version, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, dropped the Pusser name but kept a similar plot.
Walking Tall story continues as daughter shares father's admission of Dixie Mafia's murder of Sheriff Buford Pusser's Wife.
Today we may have our worst named person that we've ever covered, Buford Pusser. A man so renowned for stomping out crime in his Tennessee county that they made several movies about it. But that name though...So try and stifle your laughter long enough to enjoy the ride, cuz it's pretty bonkers. Enjoy!
Adamsville's lives up to its nickname, the "Biggest Little Town in Tennessee" as it was also the home of one of the most well know Sheriffs in history, Buford Pusser. In 1964, he was elected sheriff of McNairy County, ss soon as he was elected, Buford Pusser threw himself into his work. He first turned his attention to the Dixie Mafia and the State Line Mob, two gangs that operated on the line between Tennessee and Mississippi. Over the course of the next three years, Pusser survived several assassination attempts. He was shot, stabbed, beaten, blown up, and run over. His wife was murdered. He wrestled a bear (and won). and Through it all Buford was unstoppable. The Big-Stick-carrying "Walking Tall" sheriff of McNairy County, also has a museum in his honor.[FOLLOW ON SOCIAL MEDIA & MORE]TWITTER: www.twitter.com/SouthernOddPodINSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/SouthernOddPodJARED'S TWITTER: www.twitter.com/jared_ordisJARED'S INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/jared.ordis[ADDITONAL INFORMATION]Questions or Business Inquiry, Email Us @ ordisstudios@gmail.comResearched was used for this episode of Southern Oddities, and we couldn't have made it possible without the journalism and dedication from these awesome sources of information: Wikipedia [Buford Pusser] Wikipedia [Adamsville, TN] Wikipedia [State Line Mob] All That Interesting [Buford Pusser] Roadside America [Story 117533] Roadside America [Story 35769]"Southern Oddities" is created & produced by Jared Ordis, an Ordis Studios production. On this week's Podcast, we talk about Buford Pusser, Ogbanje, and Julia Buccola Petta.
Walking Tall is a remake of 1973 film starring Joe Don Baker. It's also "inspired" by a real-life sheriff, Buford Pusser, who patrolled the crime-laden streets of McNairy County, Tennessee, with a crudely fashioned cudgel. That's essentially the movie. The Rock walks softly and carries a big stick. As a conceit, that sounds like it could be pretty badass. Walking Tall is just executed poorly. It's hokey and feels far more like straight-to-DVD fare than an action showcase for its star. Worse, the fisticuffs and fireworks just can't sustain the silly plot that surround them. There's an entire shootout where the Rock's paramour just wears her bra because ... reasons. It's a dumb movie, folks. So, not shockingly, critics hated it. It's 26% on Rotten Tomatoes with 126 reviews. At the box office, it bombed, as well. It earned just over $57 million on a budget of $46. That's a far cry from the $40 million the 1973 version grossed on a cost of just $500,000. There's no amount of corny courtroom speeches to redeem that. So sit back, club open a Luau Krunkles POG IPA from Terrapin Beer Co. with a 4x4, and don't roll those loaded dice! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, and Mayor McCheese are administering street justice with our Pusser Sticks! Chicago film historians Adam Carston and Mike Vanderbilt are joined by The A.V. Club's Katie Rife as the trio look back on the action-packed double feature of Joe Don Baker as Buford Pusser in WALKING TALL (1973) and the Crown Pictures International release POLICEWOMEN (1974) that opened at the Beverly Theater on Chicago's south side on May 10, 1974.
Buford Pusser True Crime author and blogger Synova Cantrell tells the true story behind the murder of Tennessee Sheriff Buford Pusser. The well-known Walking Tall movies depict the story of this tough southern named Sheriff... The post Buford Pusser and the Dixie Mafia appeared first on Gangland Wire.
On this edition of Parallax Views, true crime author Synova Cantrell joins us for a riveting discussion of an organized crime syndicate known as The Dixie Mafia. If you've ever seen the Walking Tall movies The Dixie Mafia are the antagonists of tough southern Sheriff Buford Pusser (portrayed in the movies by Joe Don Baker, Bo Svenson, and, in the remake, "Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson). But the story of Buford Pusser and his battle against The Dixie Mafia wasn't just the stuff of action movies. Pusser was real and so was the Dixie Mafia. In fact, the Pusser story is only one part of the Dixie Mafia saga. Synova Cantrell, in her book Silenced by the Dixie Mafia: The Anderson Files, tells not only the story of Pusser and the Dixie Mafia but a cold case that has led one woman, Phyllis Anderson, on quest for justice over the course of multiple decades. It's a story of that encompasses arson and murder-for-hire plots, police brutality and police misconduct, racist groups like the KKK, lawless southern-fried criminality in rural America that was arguably more vicious than the Italian mob, moonshine, poverty, villains resembling more serious versions of The Dukes of Hazzard characters Boss Hogg and Roscoe, Southern belles gone bad, and even the break-up of the the Allman Brothers band!We delve into a number of these areas including:- The origins of the Dixie Mafia by way of the Stateline mob- The brilliance of the Dixie Mafia and characters like Towhead White as well as the structure of the Dixie Mafia- The Dixie Mafia, "The Godfathers of Southern Rock" the Allman Brothers, and the RICO act- The real Buford Pusser and the mythology of the Walking Tall movies; Buford "The Bull" Pusser's one-man war against the Dixie Mafia and his fight to the death with Towhead White- The vicious and seductive Louise Hathcock, the Queen of the Stateline mob- And much, much more!
The State Line Mob was an association of criminals that operated in the 1950s and 1960s at the Mississippi–Tennessee state line in Alcorn County, Mississippi, and McNairy County, Tennessee, along U.S. Route 45. The State Line Mob was involved in bootlegging, gambling, prostitution, tourist fleecing, robbery, and murder. The State Line Mob gained national attention throughout the 1960s for its ongoing feud with legendary McNairy County Sheriff Buford Pusser. Pusser's personal vow to shut down the "State Liners" led to an all out war. Join Mountain Murders as we dig into PART ONE of a TWO PART Series on the notorious southern crime syndicate. This week, the doughy-hearted duo, Luke and Danny, talk about 1973's Walking Tall. "When a man loves a woman," Michael Bolton sings on his 1991 hit, "can't keep his mind on nothin' else." Too true, Michael. And when a man loves a large piece of lumber-- and his name happens to be Buford Pusser-- he can't keep his mind on nothin' else but homegrown justice. Luke and Danny talk this week about wrestling names, Danny's love of Las Vegas, and Luke's future career as a baseball mascot. Listen in!
This week's episode is about legendary sheriff Buford Pusser of McNairy County, Tennessee fame. He carried a big stick!

https://youtu.be/33tVFo71zhU This week we had the pleasure of conversing with our old friends Sean Hilsdon and Brian Williams. Brian and Sean are the Race Directors for the wildly successful Big Hill Pond Walking Tall 25k/50k. The race is filling up fast so we hope you will sign up today. Below is a little about what you can expect at BHP. Big Hill Ponds 50/25k is run in Pocahontas TN. It will be run Oct 19th 2019. The race will have 31 or 15.5 miles made up almost entirely of single track trail with only a little park road used to string out the competition. The race features a fire tower that you will have to climb and a swamp boardwalk that is over a half mile across. The name of the race comes from the history of the area and local sheriff Buford Pusser, who is known for his virtual one-man war on moonshining, prostitution, gambling, and other vices along the Mississippi-Tennessee state line. The race will offer enough scenery and elevation for the most grizzled trail runner but should be doable for the well trained first timer. This race will sell out! Sheriff Buford Pusser's famous stick; and attending the 1970 game that Tom Dempsey kicked a record 63-yard field goal for the New Orleans Saints.

These three films are the story of that. Joe Don Baker and Bo Svenson star as our hero in this being the Walking Tall trilogy. The Beefers swing and celebrate this man in a big ass edition.

Buford Pusser was the “Walking Tall” sheriff, famous for his frequent violent run-ins with local lowlifes and gangsters. But by August 21, 1974, he was retired and a Hollywood celebrity, driving away from his hometown county fair in a new Corvette he’d bought with money from his first Walking Tall movie. His daughter, who followed a few minutes behind, did indeed come upon the burning wreck of his car, with Buford dead beside it from a broken neck. Authorities claimed that Buford died because he was driving too fast, had too much to drink, and wasn’t wearing his seat belt. But few people in Adamsville believed that. To them, the crash, and Buford’s death, was not an accident. Investigators said that the fire made it impossible to know if the car had been tampered with. With so much contradiction surrounding his life and death … who was he, and what happened??Huge Thank You to Jared A. Walters for providing some of this audio. https://youtu.be/XXlpfGoi4iI
Buford Pusser was elected sheriff of McNairy County, Tennessee, on a platform of cleaning up the county, which was regarded as the most corrupt, crime-ridden county in the state, if not the U.S. by some local citizens. According to locals, several organized-crime rings, based mainly in Nashville, ran the criminal enterprises in McNairy County, including gambling, prostitution, bootlegging, narcotics, auto theft, etc. Pusser was a former amateur wrestler while living in Chicago, who locals perceived as tough as nails and incorruptible, which was a major departure from the image some prior local officials had. Although there were never any witnesses, Pusser claimed there were several attempts to carry out a contract on his life. The most serious incident occurred when the car he and his wife was riding in was ambushed; his wife was killed and he was shot in the chin requiring substantial surgery and a major facial reconstruction to repair his chin as well as damage caused in several high speed accidents. Pusser died in 1974 when the Corvette he was driving veered off the road at over 100 mph and crashed. Though It was officially ruled an accident, some locals believed he had been deliberately run off the road in a successful assassination attempt. The case was quickly closed and the records sealed by court order. So what really happened??Huge Thank You to Jared A. Walters for providing some of this audio. https://youtu.be/XXlpfGoi4iI
Brian Williams and Sean Hilsdon were our guests on Lift Heavy Run Long® #67. They are organizing a trail race for October of next year, and we discuss what we can expect. I am probably looking forward to this race more than most because I know these guys personally, and I know the kind of fun, adventure, and excitement that they bring with them everywhere they go. This will be a big race and a well-run event. Big Hill Pond's 50/25K will have something for everyone. It will be run on October 20th 2018. The race will have 31 or 15.5 miles made up almost entirely of single track trail with only a little crushed gravel park road to help string out the competition. The race will feature a fire tower that you will have to climb, and a swamp boardwalk that is almost a half mile across. The history of the area comes from the local sheriff Buford Pusser, who is known for his virtual one-man war on moonshining, prostitution, gambling, and other vices along the Mississippi–Tennessee state line. The race will offer enough scenery and elevation for the most grizzled trail runner but should be doable for the first timer. A little bit about the organizers: Brian B Williams is a Financial Advisor for Raymond James. He lives in Germantown TN with his wife Lorrie, son Adam, and daughter Virginia Grace. Like many others out there he started running in his early 30’s to lose some weight and get back into shape. He quickly found that running was something that he truly enjoyed and trail running quickly became his passion. The Sylamore 50K was his first ultra marathon in 2012 and he has finished over 30 races of that distance or longer since. He has run Ultras in multiple states and even finished Comrades in South Africa. He is an active board member on the Memphis Runners Track Club, volunteers at MYA events, and participates in many other charities around town. He loves the trail community and enjoys giving back. He believes you should never say no to an adventure. Sean Hilsdon is civil engineer from Millington, TN who now lives in Southaven, MS with his wife April, two boys Mitchell and Garrett, and 6-week old baby girl Madison. He is an Eagle Scout that spent most of his youth in the outdoors and playing sports. He got into outdoor running in early 2014 in an attempt to quit smoking, lose weight, reduce stress, and lead a healthier lifestyle. He found accountability and friendship through running groups like the Desoto Runners Club, Full Motion Running & Cycling Shop, and Breakaway Running Store, which hold weekly group runs. From starting with his first 5k and now having several ultramarathons and triathlons under his belt, he owes all his success to God, family and friends. He is vice president of the North Mississippi Endurance Multisport Team and is looking forward to completing his first 50 miler in November 2017. He is already very excited about the upcoming 2018 season. He believes it’s a very fine balance between spending quality time with family and chasing down his athletic dreams, but hopes that it will motivate his family and friends to also strive for a better quality of life. His motto in life is try everything at least once and never quit under your own will!
