To what extent were Soviet engagements with the Third World characterized by solidarity during the Cold War? And to what extent did these same engagements conceal imperial ambitions? In this episode of the Transformative Podcast, Alessandro Iandolo (UCL) talks to Rosamund Johnston (RECET) about how concrete development projects could be viewed quite differently by the different actors involved. He also talks about how his own perspective on these projects has changed, as he approaches them in his new research from different angles. If all of those involved came to be almost in agreement on one point, he argues, it was that the world-building exercises they were involved in were somehow second best when compared to the material and intellectual resources of an imagined West. Alessandro Iandolo is a lecturer at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London, specializing in the history of the Soviet Union in the world. His first book, Arrested Development: The Soviet Union in Ghana, Guinea, and Mali, 1955-1968, explored the Soviet Union's economic partnership with three newly-independent countries in West Africa during the Khrushchev era, winning the W. Bruce Lincoln prize for the best first monograph in Russian History, and the Marshall D. Shulman prize for the best monograph on the internationalrelations of the USSR from the Association for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies.

And, also, when we transform the suffering, it is not only our transformation: it is a transformation for the greater collective. And we don’t discriminate about whether it is a small or a large transformation, because all transformations have an impact on the greater consciousness of our society.” “When we talk about coming home to oneself, that is the whole journey of meditation: dwelling happily in the present moment. It means that, in the present moment, whether there’s a storm, whether it is a moment that is blissful and peaceful, I can be happy. And if there is a moment when there is suffering, like if I am unwell and I’m not experiencing joy and happiness, I can learn to still tap into my happy conditions and be there for this moment. So I can generate happiness in this moment, even in the midst of suffering and pain.” “The word love in Buddhism is very deep; there’s so many layers to it. And a part of love always starts with oneself – like, can we learn to be kinder to ourselves? Can we make ourselves a little bit kinder, so that our home in ourselves is a little bit kinder?” “We, as practitioners, know that we’re not only conditioned from the outer energy, we also have the capacity to condition ourselves. And that is part of the journey of arriving home: starting to redevelop the foundation of our home.” “A lot of people in the West suffer from two negative qualities that really rub up against each other. People suffer from self-loathing and they suffer from perfection. In other words, they don’t like themselves and they’re trying to be perfect – and that combination is pretty catastrophic.” “It takes time to really look at and be honest about what we don’t like about ourselves and where that is coming from. You can't just tell someone, ‘Well, start loving yourself. What is there not to love?'” “Meditation is a journey where the destination can be reached in every moment. The destination is not in five years, in 10 years, or only reached when I can sit and not move and have no feelings. To erase all feelings and emotions and thinking is not the aim of meditation. It’s learning to ground ourselves, it’s learning to guide our energies and to guide our mind.” “Why is it that we can’t love ourselves? What makes it so difficult to say the word love? But, at the same time, when I say ‘learn to love yourself', it doesn’t mean that we have to say, ‘Oh, I love me.' Loving yourself can happen in so many ways. For example, acceptance is love. So, expanding the value of loving oneself is important, like redefining what our values are. It’s like, when I am overwhelmed I know how to take a pause: I go for a walk on the grass; I touch the grass or I go into the forest and I give myself a moment of just relaxation. That’s learning to love yourself.” “People think compassion is very soft or very weak, but part of the journey of coming home is that there has to be the element of compassion. Compassion becomes a foundation that allows us to accept ourselves, to accept the unwholesome actions that we have already performed.” “As we progress on the path of life – not even in terms of meditation – I think that our definition of home continues to evolve and our way of being in the present moment continues to deepen.” “You can only be you with the non-you elements.” “How can we dismantle this concept of self? It has to come into action with the insight of interbeing.” “I was always so captivated by how magnetic our teacher Thay was around the walking meditation, when all the kids would want to hold his hand and sit around him. But he wasn't saying anything; he was just drinking a cup of tea or walking in silence. And I think the beauty that he was expressing was his way of being: that he could move so freely on this planet, and transform so much of his pain and suffering through what he experienced in life without being caught up in that. But he was walking with steps of freedom in the present moment, not taking for granted that moment of joy, of peace, and of connection.” “For those of us who are young, we are always going to be tackling the question, ‘Am I enough?' And even those of us who are older – guess what, young people? We still have these questions. But let us collectively transform this, so that what we can transmit to the next generation is, ‘You are enough and your potentials are all there. You just have to water the right seeds.'” “Thay found his home in the midst of fire and fury. He found his home in the midst of being banished from his homeland. Thay found home wherever he was, rather than in a place.” “Your pain is not yours alone.”

Julie proposes three observations about the election. A full return of the positive masculine depicted in the election of Trump and particularly in his cabinet selections. Secondly she talks about the zigzag process between the left and the right political sentiments and how that's the natural flow between the instincts of warmth versus competence. We discussed how that can be corrupted by unchecked power. Finally we observe that the system works despite the fact that it's taken 40 years and the destructive elements of the various industrial complexes.Follow Us:YouTubeTwitterFacebookTumblrAll audio & videos edited by: Jay Prescott Videography

How do unconscious forces shape our collective behaviors and influence how we navigate societal conflicts and personal identity? Free yourself from the collective nightmare—discover the wisdom of your dreams this fall at DREAM SCHOOL Political dynamics are deeply influenced by underlying psychological forces known as cultural complexes, which shape group behavior, reinforce divisions, and heighten emotional responses to societal changes. Tom Singer, editor and fellow author of Mind of State: Conversations on the Psychological Conflicts Stirring U.S. Politics & Society , explains that these social psychology phenomena, arising from emotions and ideas, affect how individuals think and feel. Rooted in historical trauma and collective identities, these collective complexes can manifest in polarized thinking, distrust of institutions, and a pervasive fear of the "other." Mass emotional reactivity, intensified by technology and social media, exacerbates these divides by rapidly spreading information that reinforces opposing group identities. Jung's insights into the collective psyche illuminate the unconscious patterns and archetypal themes that influence group behavior, suggesting that societal pressures amplify these negative dynamics. Navigating such complexities requires individual awareness, self-reflection, emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and mindfulness to mitigate disproportionate influences. Thoughtful, reflective political discourse and the differentiation of emotional reactivity from reasoned engagement are essential in addressing the distorting effects of cultural complexes on modern society. Prepare to discover what deeper psychological dynamics underlie group behavior and collective identity, how unconscious processes manifest in social and political systems, which archetypal patterns influence societal reactions and conflicts, whether personal and collective awareness can transform entrenched cultural attitudes, why examining unconscious forces is vital for understanding human interactions and societal structures…and so much more. Functions of the Shadow: Complexes & Projections

This week on The Tarot Diagnosis Podcast,  I am exploring two important functions of the shadow: complexes and projections. Inspired by recent talks, presentations, and my upcoming book on shadow work (to be published by Weiser in Fall 2025), this episode highlights how the shadow, tarot, and psychology intersect. Throughout the episode I discuss The Star as a shadow, the Six of Pentacles as a complex, and the King of Cups as a projection. We end with the Nine of Wands as our “Now what?” card. Episode Highlights: Complexes: These are stories that form from unacknowledged shadow material, often functioning autonomously and influencing how we see the world. For example, an inferiority complex might form in response to childhood experiences of being belittled or compared to others. Projections: A defense mechanism that allows us to attribute our own undesirable traits or feelings onto others, helping us avoid confronting our shadow. Our parent's complexes influence their behavior toward us, causing unintended consequences. It's as if we were raised by their unresolved emotional issues. Parental complexes shape our emotional and psychological development, influencing how we relate to others and perceive ourselves, often in ways we aren't fully aware of. These feeling-toned webs of unresolved emotional struggles unconsciously shape our parent's thoughts, feelings and behaviors. To some degree, we are raised by our parent's complexes rooted in generational trauma, cultural pressures, and societal expectations. As children, we absorb not only their spoken words but also their unspoken fears and desires, which affect our emotional responses and relationships throughout life. Healing begins with conscious awareness, self-reflection, and differentiating our natural personality from the parental patterns that colonized our psyche. By confronting these inherited patterns, we can break free from their grip, fostering healthier relationships and paving the way for emotional growth and transformation. Prepare to discover what parental complexes are and how they shape your emotional and psychological development, how unconscious emotional patterns inherited from your parents influence your identity, relationships, and decision-making, which generational traumas and societal factors contribute to the formation of these complexes and their impact on your life, whether it is possible to break free from inherited emotional burdens and how to begin the healing process, why becoming conscious of these complexes is crucial for personal growth, emotional balance, and healthier relationships.
