Animation has been a major player in Hollywood, with companies like DreamWorks and Disney having made some of their most acclaimed works here in the Golden State. However, a new report has found that recent high-grossing animated films are being made outside of Hollywood. Examples mentioned include Moana, with the original film being made in Hollywood, but its sequel having been made in Vancouver. The study was co-authored by the Animation Guild, BRIC Foundation and Titmouse Foundation in partnership with CVL Economics. Today on FilmWeek, we’re joined by CVL Economics founding partner Adam Fowler, the Animation Guild executive board member Jason Mayer, and LAist chief animation critic Charles Solomon.

It is a cool and awesome week on the show as we rue the fact that we got two candidates for Anecdote of the Year last week and then a whole lotta duds this week. But that's ok! We have a ton of fun with Aiden's three appearances on the show, we beg for a Second Chance for Will, and Jeopardy! gets its own "Hot Priest". Plus, we continue our investigation into Jeopardy's increasing horniness, we go deep on Fantasia, and Emily claims the ultimate triumph: a successful Blind Final Jeopardy guess at home. Please follow the show on Instagram at @whatisajeopardypodcast and on Twitter at @jeopardypodcast for more news and updates about the show. With so many different organizations giving out best of honors, it's sometimes difficult for film lovers to parse what they all mean. One of those organizations is the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) who this weekend will meet in-person for the first time since 2019 to decide on the best performances and films of the year. Today, Larry sits down with FilmWeek critics Christy Lemire, Peter Rainer and Charles Solomon to understand the LAFCA decision making process, the similarities between the various award organizations, and to discuss the contemporary influence of film criticism.

Ghibli Fest 2023, a yearly re-screening of Studio Ghibli films, may have kicked off back in March but it's upcoming re-release has historical significance. That being the 1997 film “Princess Mononoke,” a film that was renowned filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki's first, global box office hit, making close $200 million. It's domestic and global success at the time was unmatched… up until the 2001 film “Spirited Away.” Fans revisiting these features comes at a time where Miyazaki reaches the next chapter in his storytelling, with his final film “The Boy and the Heron” having released in Japan in July. No official release date globally has been announced, but North America will be blessed with a screening as the Toronto International Film Festival opens its festivities with Miyazaki's last film as a director. Today on AirTalk, we talk about Studio Ghibli's growth in the global box office, Hayao Miyazaki's role in that, and the legendary filmmaker's legacy. Joining guest host Austin Cross is LAist & Animation Scoop film critic Charles Solomon, and Steve Alpert, former overseas promotion manager for Studio Ghibli.
