On l'appellera La surprise. Jumping Off the Ivory Tower with Prof JulieMac

Our final episode for this season focuses on the campaign to ban the misuse of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) being led by Dr. Julie Macfarlane and Zelda Perkins. Named “Can't Buy My Silence,” Julie and Zelda's campaign aims to bring new law into effect in both Canada and the UK to stop victims being forced to exchange their own privacy for protecting their abuser in cases of harassment, discrimination, and bullying, and to stop employers (including schools, universities, and churches as well as both unionized and non-unionized workplaces) using NDAs to secretly “pass-the-trash” to other employers. Julie talks with Dayna about how she and Zelda met and planned the campaign, both motivated by their personal experiences of NDAs: Zelda with the notorious Harvey Weinstein, and Julie who saw a colleague terminated for harassment protected by an NDA (and a letter of recommendation) from the University of Windsor. Stacey Buchholzer, the campaign coordinator, closes out the podcast by reading from a selection of the many stories that have been submitted to the campaign, illustrating the trauma experienced from being first subjected to unfairness and misconduct, and then permanently silenced. The campaign website includes a lot of public legal information about NDAs. You can also listen to Julie's conversation with Zelda from last season, before they launched their campaign, in which Zelda describes how she broke her NDA with Weinstein and brought this issue into public discussion, which she has continued ever since. In Other News: This week our In Other News Correspondent is Research Assistant Charlotte Sullivan. Charlotte discusses: a Toronto-based legal clinic's recent challenge against caps on damages awarded in claims involving the Canadian Human Rights Act; and Chief Justice Jacques Fournier of the Québec Superior Court's recent decision to step down from the bench at the age of 71, and some interesting comments he made regarding access to justice in the COVID-19 pandemic context. In today's episode, Julie talks to Bernie Mayer and Jackie Font-Guzmán about the ideas they explore in their new book, The Neutrality Trap: Disrupting and Connecting for Social Change (Wiley, 2022). Two long-time mediators and mediation teachers, Bernie and Jackie describe their growing disillusionment with the way mediation is sometimes offered to family and other litigants: as a panacea that will smooth over rough edges and produce an “agreement,” which will be able to resolve underlying differences. Bernie and Jackie both speak to their personal experience of conflicts that reflect larger societal power differences and systems, and reflect on the danger that a more superficial, “make nice” approach reinforces existing inequalities and injustices. Going behind the headlines (“he is a monster!” “she is impossible!”), while messy, uncomfortable, and often worse, can produce a more realistic path for moving forward, and allows each party to explore their own truth. Bernie Mayer was a founding partner of CDR Associates, and has provided conflict intervention for families, communities, universities, corporations, and governmental agencies throughout North America and internationally for over 35 years. Bernie is Emeritus Professor of Negotiation and Conflict Resolution, Creighton University. He has worked in child welfare, mental health, substance abuse treatment, and psychotherapy. His earlier books include: Beyond Neutrality, and The Conflict Paradox. Jackie Font-Guzmán is the inaugural Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Eastern Mennonite University. Previously she was professor of conflict and peacebuilding at Creighton University. Jackie has provided mediation, facilitation, and consulting services to many international and transnational organizations. She previously worked in law and health policy. In Other News: This week our In Other News Correspondent is Research Assistant Charlotte Sullivan. Charlotte discusses: a news release from the Department of Justice on advancing reconciliation through addressing the overrepresentation of Indigenous peoples in the criminal justice system in Canada; and a recent access to justice study showing an exponential increase in dismissals of race-based cases by the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario. The vast majority of self-represented litigants cannot afford full representation in legal services – and yet most of them are continuing to search for assistance that is affordable to them. Marcus is a leading innovator in the development of legal services that are tailored to client needs and pocket books, such as offering different tiers of assistance and working collaboratively to assess and meet needs. He believes in utilizing the skills of paralegals and lawyers, as well as a range of services, from procedural navigation, to issue identification, to hearings coaching. Ilana is an Advisory Board member for the national NSRLP organization, and works closely with national staff to plan and prioritize goals and strategies. This conversation introduces listeners to Ilana, and her commitment to policy reform after beginning in legal practice and becoming disillusioned with, as she puts it, “pushing people through a broken system.” Ilana describes how she first recognized the disconnect between system and users when she worked in child protection; she has since gone on to work in many areas of law reform as the Director of the Access to Justice and Law Reform Institute, adding Director of NSRLP East to her busy resume in the summer of 2021. Picture books can be a great way to start important conversations with your child. While they're designed for children, the pictures in these books will give you and other parents/caregivers plenty of talking points when it comes time to create intentional discussion around complex topics.   So how do we think more critically about picture books? In this episode, I chatted with my friend Kelly from Inclusive Story Time who has an incredible amount of insight on this topic.   Kelly (she/her) started @inclusivestorytime in May 2019 as a way to keep her family accountable to the picture books on their shelf. When the account began, they really didn't think anyone would be paying attention. She was just looking for a way to take her family's deep love of ‘Kid Lit' and be more critical of what they were consuming.   Today, Inclusive Story Time has grown into a huge community of caregivers and educators that love reading and exploring picture books that they can use with their own children.    Interested in thinking more critically about children's picture books? Well, I have a good feeling you'll enjoy hearing this conversation and get insight on just how powerful and complex picture books can really be.   In this episode, you'll hear us chat about: -Confronting your own personal biases -Being mindful of your language when referring to marginalized groups, make corrections when needed -Taking advantage of small moments -Making intentional pauses while you are reading - talking about the illustrations and the text.  “What do you notice?” -Model responses -Reading books that provide opportunities for mirrors, windows, sliding glass doors (Dr. Bishop) -Making your bookshelf inclusive!   Resources Mentioned in this Episode:   Follow Kelly on… @inclusivestorytimehttps://www.instagram.com/inclusivestorytime/   Check out Kelly's Website: https://inclusivestorytime.com/author/inclusivestorytime/   Check out Kelly's Podcast Picture Bookstagang Podcast https://inclusivestorytime.com/podcast/   Maus by Art Spiegelman https://amzn.to/3IENHCp Amazon US   Dr. Bishop's windows, mirrors and  sliding glass doors https://humaneeducation.org/windows-and-mirrors-and-sliding-glass-doors-ensuring-students-see-themselves-and-others-in-literature/   Grandads Camper Review by Kelly  https://www.instagram.com/p/CNWCEo2AWZY/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link https://amzn.to/3JCgBEy  Amazon Canada https://amzn.to/37VkZRi Amazon US   Olu and Gretta https://amzn.to/3L9Zf2g Amazon Canada https://amzn.to/3D9pP9c Amazon US   Books that are Beyond the Binary IG Live on IG https://www.instagram.com/tv/CM0A8WxHiuH/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link   Bathe the Cat by Alice B. Welcome to season 7 of Jumping Off the Ivory Tower! For our season opener, (and our 75th episode!) we're featuring a conversation with three Law Practice Program candidates – “almost” lawyers – who, along with their classmates, participated in two extended sessions with a group of almost 20 self-represented litigants in the fall of 2021. This was NSRLP's first in-school program to include self-reps in a small group, discussion-based exploration of their experiences in the legal system. Judging by the comments of both the candidates and the self-reps, the program (developed by NSRLP along with Chris Bentley, LPP Director), was an outstanding success. Julie's conversation with Jesse Frohlich, Laurene Williams and Zainab Asadullah reveals the insights and new understandings they discovered as a result of their structured conversations with up to four different self-reps. In Other News: Welcome to one of our new Other News “correspondents,” NSRLP Research Assistant and law student Charlotte Sullivan! Recently, in the UK Guardian, a woman told of her decision to have an abortion, but this wasn't one of those “My abortion was personally empowering” type of stories.  Hers was a real-life dilemma faced by too many women. Let me be clear: Her reasons in no way justify her decision to have an abortion, but pro-lifers should listen to her story carefully and take her circumstances seriously, if we hope to build a culture where abortion is not just illegal, but unthinkable. Charlotte Sullivan was newly married and newly employed when she learned she was pregnant. As a new hire, she didn't qualify for the six-week paid parental leave her employer offered. Her husband's job also didn't pay enough for both of them plus a new baby to live on during those six weeks. So, they agonized for several weeks before ultimately deciding to abort the child. The inner conflict she experienced in making the choice and continues to feel since, is palpable throughout the article. Sullivan's story isn't unique. Though women have abortions for a variety of reasons, there's no question that, in certain cases, financial pressures play a role for many.  We'll have to take these pressures into account, if we hope to build a culture of life. Paid family leave is a good place to start. According to current data about abortion, nearly half of women who have an abortion live below the federal poverty level. To put that in perspective, the federal poverty level for a family of two—say a husband and wife—is an income of $17,420 a year. In other words, many abortion-minded women feel they simply can't afford to take unpaid time off from work. This year, paid family leave has become a bit of a priority on various political agendas on both sides of the aisle. During his State of the Union address last week, President Trump threw his support behind the “Advancing Support for Working Families Act,” which was introduced late last year by Arizona Democrat Senator Kyrsten Sinema and Louisiana Republican Senator Bill Cassidy. An exclusively Democratic proposal entitled the Family Act is also on the table. Not surprisingly, there are differences between the two. The bipartisan bill favored by the president would allow couples, who become new parents by birth or adoption, to collect a portion of their future child tax credits early and receive a smaller credit for the next 10 to 15 years. As the New York Times describes, parents would be “borrowing from themselves.” Assume a new parent withdrew $5,000 to cover her six-week leave. Over the next ten years, her child tax credit, which maxes out at $2,000 a year, could be reduced by $500 a year.  At the same time, this bill “would not guarantee that a person's job is protected when taking the leave.” The Democratic proposal would be funded by a payroll tax averaging about $120 per worker and would not affect the child tax credit. Unlike the Sinema-Cassidy proposal, it would protect the employee's job. Neither bill is likely to become law this year, but the issue is getting the national attention it needs to advance. For years, the Church has taken the lead in the building a culture of life through pregnancy care centers, adoption agencies, and sound arguments. We should also back policies that will encourage women to choose life. Abortion advocates often point to poor women having to choose between their livelihood and their pregnancy. It's a red herring that distracts from the central question of whether or not abortion takes an innocent life. Still, we can only advance the cause of life by assisting women and families that face dire financial situations. Kudos to the president and to those in Congress who are seeking a way forward for paid family leave. And special thanks to those organizations and activists who've championed this cause for so long. It's a cause worthy of our support.

Bethany interviews Charlotte Sullivan Wild whose debut picture book is THE AMAZING IDEA OF YOU, illustrated by Mary Lundquist (Bloomsbury, 2019). Charlotte has served as the Regional Advisor for the Southwest Texas chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators; founding host of the Picture Book Salon of San Antonio, Texas; and bookseller at The Twig Book Shop. She previously taught children’s literature for nearly two decades, volunteered in public and school libraries, and interviewed children’s authors for Write On! Radio (KFAI).      In this episode of The Porchlight, Bethany extends a welcome to author-hood to Charlotte who says one of her greatest joys is reading to kids, and now she gets to read them her own words! For eleven years, Charlotte worked to master writing, and seven of those years she spent working extensively on picture books. She and Bethany discuss the speed of the writing process and how greatly it can vary from project to project plus how important it is that the publishing market be ready for certain subjects. They seek to define author voice and how publishing is more and more often blurring the lines among genres, usually to the delight of readers. Charlotte gives a shout out to three of her favorite picture books: ALL AROUND US, THE SOUND OF SILENCE, and THIS IS MY EYE. The interview concludes with Charlotte explaining how both the magic and the math of story and structure enchant her and inform her work. For more about Charlotte, visit https://charlotteswild.com/

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. One genre trope that seems to be used often is amnesia. What if our lead protagonist doesn’t remember anything at all. Was he or she a criminal or a hero? Such films as Total Recall among others have played with this quite well. A little seen 2017 Canadian film entitled Radius takes this idea and makes it its own. A man wakes up in a ditch by the side of the road remembering nothing about himself. Walking down the road, he arrives at a local diner. Unfortunately for him, not only does he find the place littered with dead bodies, but others who arrive begin to die around him. Searching his wallet, he finds his license and heads back to his address. Locking himself in his house, he suddenly receives a knock on his door. A woman, just like he, is there who remembers nothing. The film is written and directed by the duo Caroline Labreche and Steeve Leonard and stars Diego Klattenhoff and Charlotte Sullivan. Though mostly unknowns, the film was one of the handful of surprises from independent genre cinema in 2017. Part horror, part thriller, and part science fiction, the film was rated as the second best speculative fiction film by co-host Philip. He and the other Dark Discussions co-hosts take a look at this film and give their critique.
