Christopher Landon (Director of “Happy Death Day” & “Freaky”) is back with a new Hitchcockian thriller, and the co-hosts of Queer Cinema Catchup, Joe & Allison, dropped in to review it with us. Tune in to hear us break down “Drop” — from who we initially thought was behind those sinister messages, to what each of us would do in that situation, and of course, that jaw-dropping finale!
This week, we're chatting to Robert Whitlow, prolific writer of over 20 bestselling novels. His new one is 'Guilty Until Innocent', a legal thriller that looks an an old case being reopened, and the two lawyers who have to prove the convicted's innocence against the odds. His debut novel, 'The List', was adapted into a successful movie starring Malcolm McDowell. In fact, four of Robert's novels have been adapted for the big screen, and Robert still divides his time between writing and working as a local attorney. You can hear how he seperates his day, energy and creativity for that, and why he thinks the secret is to relax and be consistent... it's to discover your 'writing bio-rhythm'Faith plays a huge part in Robert's work, and we figure out why that is, how organic it can ever be, and whether he's bothered about how a reader's opinion towards religion might change with his writing. It's led him to win the prestigious 'Christy Award for Contemporary Writing' in 2001. He reveals why he loves editing, how he wrestles characters back to his ideas, and why he needs a few drafts to really figure out who his protagonist is.Get a copy of the novel - uk.bookshop.org/shop/writersroutineSupport the show -patreon.com/writersroutineko-fi.com/writersroutineSubscribe to the weekly newsletter - writersroutine.substack.com@writerspodwritersroutine.com Hosted on Acast. Thirty years ago this month, acclaimed director Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot, Air Force One, The Perfect Storm) gave us a terrifying viral thriller which at the time MIGHT have seemed like pure fiction....but WAS it? :o Well regardless it was a big hit and featured a stacked cast featuring Oscar-winners Dustin Hoffman, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, and Cuba Gooding Jr plus Rene Russo and the late, great Donald Sutherland. (How did those last two never receive Oscar nominations??) A brand new deadly virus has travelled from overseas via an innocent monkey who stowed away on a shipping barge....and that monkey has landed in Southern California....and this virus has started to spread around one truly unfortunate isolated small town. People are dying as the virus mutates and the only folks who can stop it are a team of Army doctors who have to figure out how to find a cure. It's all very '90's though very scary nonetheless....and remember to wash your hands! My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Laury A Egan, author of the book The Psychologist's Shadow. Laury is the author of thirteen novels and four limited edition poetry volumes. Eighty-five of her stories and poems have appeared in literary journals and anthologies. She is a reviewer for The New York Journal of Books, a fine arts photographer, and a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University. She lives on the northern coast of New Jersey. In my book review, I stated The Psychologist's Shadow is a psychological thriller that had me hooked from the first chapter. Ellen Haskell is a psychologist who recently moved her practice to remove herself from a bad situation. Somehow, it seems that 'bad situations' follow Ellen, and she soon finds herself in the middle of an obsession. Laury does a wonderful job casting light on several patients and even a family member who could be behind the phone calls, notes, and trinkets. I didn't figure out the stalker. I had ruled out some because they seem too obvious and others because of specific things that happened during the action. I actually thought it was one of the patients that I didn't want it to be! I even suspected patients ruled out by Ellen figuring she was missing something. Finally, I suspected a past boyfriend. Although I hadn't ruled out the real stalker, I certainly wouldn't have bet my life on it! Laury did a great job keeping the reader guessing. Although I tend to shy away from thrillers because they often get too graphic, Laury provided all the suspense necessary without adding gratuitous violence. This is a must-read! Klattenhoff and Sullivan play two survivors of a car accident who discover that one causes the death of anyone who comes within a certain radius of him, and the other has the ability to nullify this effect.Listen to Rachel, Kate, and Hannah discuss spicy books, serious books, and everything in between (but mostly spicy!). Twenty years ago in the immediate wake of winning his second Oscar (Best Actor for Training Day), our Greatest Living Actor chose this as a follow-up project....a frothy neo-noir taking place in Florida reuniting with a director (Carl Franklin, also director of previous episode One False Move) behind one of his underrated '90's gems, Devil in a Blue Dress. We're of course referring to Denzel Washington who plays local Sheriff Matt Whitlock who finds himself embroiled in the investigation of a local murder....of a woman who he has been having a secret affair with played by Sanaa Lathan with the investigation being LEAD by a Miami detective (Eva Mendes) who happens to be his ex-wife. :o And guess WHO also might be the prime suspect? Complications ensue, get ready for a sweaty good time!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
Thirty years ago we saw the release of this mystery thriller featuring three promising stars (Alec Baldwin, Nicole Kidman, Bill Pullman), co-written by two promising screenwriters (Aaron Sorkin, Scott Frank), and helmed by one accomplished director (Harold Becker - Sea of Love, Taps). And THE one scene which most people remember from it happens to feature one of the stars referring to himself/herself as God....guess who that was? :) The plot revolves around a sleepy New England school for young women where students are getting murdered but wait there's more! Also co-starring Bebe Neuwirth, George C. Scott, Tobin Bell, and Anne Bancroft.....it's time to revisit one of THE nuttier thrillers of the '90's! Back in the fall of '93 when this first came out, this movie felt like a big deal. This was just a few years after star Macauley Culkin had become a household name after his 1990 starring vehicle Home Alone had taken over the world. Culkin was the highest paid actor in Hollywood for a short time period, he was everywhere, and in typical fashion....there was already a growing backlash against him. After two Home Alone movies playing Mac's brand of violent sadism but strictly for laughs, this felt like the logical next step of course. Because in this movie, he plays disturbed pre-teen Henry living an idyllic life with this family at a large water-front home in Nantucket....or IS he? Well apparently Henry is homicidal and his visiting young cousin Mark (Elijah Wood) becomes the first to realize this as he witnesses Henry commit all sorts of violent, heinous acts.....including terrorizing his own kid sister (Quinn Culkin) while pulling the wool over his parents, including the sweet-natured Susan played by Wendy Crewson. And of course, chaos ensues! Chaos involving young children in this enduring cult classic directed by Joseph Ruben (Sleeping With the Enemy) - don't say you weren't warned!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

April 10th, 2023 - New Movie "Nefarious"...a suspense thriller unlike anything else? Is it Catholic? Joe discusses. Plus we're joined again by Mike Koeniger!
While a nice, sweet escape from reality can be a great read, so can a read about a fictional character having to escape from their horrible reality and get help from the folks who will bring bad guys to justice--if they can catch those guys in time, that is. Jessica R. Patch is one author you won't want to miss if you like your toes to tingle for reasons other than swoony heroes and all the liplock that can go with that nonsense--I mean romance. Ahem. Yeah. Well, Jessica might have romance in her books, but it definitely plays second fiddle to a whole different kind of heart thumping! Listen in to find out more! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. What More Could You Want This Weekend Than an Exciting New Thriller? Whooeee! Just before the interview, I was listening to the opening of Jessica R. Patch's latest release, A Cry in the Dark, and man! If it wouldn't have been rude, I'd have been tempted to beg off the interview and just listen. Well, and I was in the middle of another book at the time anyway, so... sigh. Jessica and I had a great time chatting about her love for justice, showing the beauty of redemption against the backdrop of man's depravity, and all without going overboard. She'll do her best to scare the hair off your head, but she's not interested in throwing out just anything for shock value. Is it just me, or is that beautiful news? Honestly, I probably should've cheered more. Full disclosure: I was probably bobbing my head off in agreement. In addition to her latest release, we also chatted about Jessica's first book with Love Inspired Trade, Her Darkest Secret, her other Love Inspired books, and her next Love Inspired Trade novel... I think it was something about Garden Girls. My brain is shutting down. I don't know about y'all, but I'm crazy excited to read all of them! Jessica did say that while her books could be read in any order, it is a better reading experience to start with the first in this series, so I ordered Her Darkest Secret and it should be here any day now. EEEP! A Cry in the Dark by Jessica R. Patch Deep in the Kentucky hills, three women have been found brutalized and murdered. But the folks in Night Holler have their own ways and their own laws. And they're not talking… Led to an isolated Appalachian Mountain town by a trail of disturbing murders, FBI special agent Violet Rainwater's determined to catch a serial killer with a twisted agenda. With locals refusing to reveal their secrets, Violet's only ally is Detective John Orlando. But even John has an ulterior motive—he's convinced this case is connected to his wife's murder. As they dig deeper, Violet uncovers a link to her own unresolved past. For years she's worked the cold case of her mother's abduction, which had led to her birth. The need to look into the eyes of the sinful man who fathered her consumes Violet. Until she can, she'll never have peace. Because she's terrified she might be exactly like him. In this chilling novel, when the present collides with Violet's mysterious past and John's tragic loss, they must unravel the warped, sinuous connections before the killer strikes again. But solving the case might not be nearly as terrifying as the possibility that Violet's finally found her roots… You can learn more about Jessica and her books (and get the first sneak peek at that new cover) by heading over to her WEBSITE. Our ongoing series of notable Tom Cruise vehicles from different eras continues, all leading to the release of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part I coming this July. This particular episode focuses on a time in the early '2000's when Cruise was both considered one of the biggest movie stars in the world AND still chasing interesting parts with top-flight directors....this was his first and only collaboration with the legendary Michael Mann who had just recently directed seminal films like Heat and The Insider. Cruise plays an elite hit-man on a one night mission to assassinate six targets in six different areas of Los Angeles....and for transportation, he enlists Jamie Foxx' Max who drives a taxi but aspires to more. He also never envisioned himself driving an assassin around for the night nor does he condone murder - Max is also of course scared for his OWN life which is where the story derives much of its tension. And what results is an elegantly shot night-time thriller as we follow both Vincent and Max to various locations to meet various characters with an extensive cast that also includes Jada Pinkett-Smith, Mark Ruffalo, Javier Bardem, and Bruce McGill. Let's find out where the night takes us.....Host: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
Welcome to Mysteries to Die For and this Toe Tag.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is normally a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you at the heart of mystery, murder, and mayhem. Today is a bonus episode we call a Toe Tag. It is the first chapter from a fresh release in the mystery, crime, and thriller genre.Today's featured release is The Accidental Spy by David Gardner The Accidental Spy was released November 2, 2022 from Encircle Publications and is available from AMAZON LINK and other book retailers.About David GardnerDavid Gardner grew up on a Wisconsin dairy farm, served in Army Special Forces and earned a Ph.D. in French from the University of Wisconsin. He has taught college and worked as a reporter and in the computer industry. He coauthored three programming books for Prentice Hall, wrote dozens of travel articles as well as too many mind-numbing computer manuals before happily turning to fiction: “The Journalist: A Paranormal Thriller,” “The Last Speaker of Skalwegian,” and “The Accidental Spy” (all with Encircle Publications, LLC).He lives in Massachusetts with his wife, Nancy, also a writer. He hikes, bikes, messes with astrophotography and plays the keyboard with no discernible talent whatsoever.TG Wolff ReviewThe Accidental Spy is a Suspense Thriller with a minor in satire. Harvey Hudson is a big thinker. A professor of Big History, his niche in this world is to understand how things begin and how they end. His lackluster technical writing career began with the end of his collegiate teaching career. Breaking the top commandments for cyber security, he invites industrial espionage into his company's servers. But, no worries, the CIA is on it…and so are the Russians. And Harvey, he's the pinball stuck in between, working to make his own way out.Bottom line: The Accidental Spy is for you if you like thrillers that are more intellectual than physical where you can cheer for the underdog.Strengths of the story. Harvey Hudson is not your normal thriller hero. He's a 56-year-old thinker, not a man of action, and we meet him at a low point in his life. Yet, he is utterly likeable for his quiet rebellions (eating the skittles out of a birthday basket), his dedication to his mother (paying her mortgage while he lives in a hole), and his unwavering dreamer philosophy (his favorite question is “what if?”). He is the star. The supporting characters are distinctive and have real roles in the story. The logic of the plot holds up and all questions are resolved. Where the story fell short of ideal: This is a story that is a hybrid of the thriller and satire genre. The story is short on the high-speed chases and bullet riddled exchanges often expected with a thriller. Consequently, fans of series such as Jason Borne may find The Accidental Spy slow. However, if you have the sense of humor that aligns with Fletch, well, you'll enjoy Harvey.

Remember when Hollywood used to release actual THRILLERS focused on real Earth-based things which involved real regular people who didn't wear capes?? Well you don't have to go all the way back to 1979 to find a strong one (as there were many during the '90's) to find one but this might be one of the more memorable ones as it focuses on subject matter which was a hot-button topic at the time of release: the proliferation of nuclear power. Jane Fonda stars as a TV reporter who might have uncovered some unexpected dangers emerging from a local power plant in southern California, Michael Douglas (who also produced) plays her camera man, and Jack Lemmon plays an operator at said local power plant. This film received several Oscar nominations including for Best Actor (Lemmon), Best Actress (Fonda), and Best Original Screenplay which was co-written by James Bridges who also directed this film.Host: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

When I saw the title... The Gates of Hell, I had an image of what the cover would look like. Dark... ominous... and a whole lot of red. Well, I was partially right and pleasantly surprised. I mean, this cover is unique, appears to be spot on, and yet unexpected, too. I like that combination. Then I read more about it, and I had the strange sense that I was looking at Liam Nieson's Taken meets Dan Brown's The Davinci Code. Andy Dewitt says I'm not too far off! EEEP! Listen in and see why this book promises to be a page-turner! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you Watch Out! This Book Will Send You on a Wild Ride through Palestine! On a trip through Israel, author Andy Dewitt got the inspiration for his next "Christmas book" for his kids. A childhood tradition has turned into a book you'll want to have on your shelf. Taking a historical look at the real meaning behind "the gates of hell will not prevail against it" as his inspiration, Andy begins his story with a twist on an actual bit from his family's life and then sends readers on a harrowing journey to try to save a young (barely engaged) woman from the clutches of a pagan cult. Andy Dewitt also talks about his life before writing (he was a dentist, but he promises no root canals come with the book... I think that's what he said...), being a ghostwriter, and even about another book he was prepared to submit for publication until he found something crazy similar. Now we have to pray that he decides his book needs to see the light of day anyway. The Gates of Hell by Andy Dewitt One Moment She Gets Engaged, The Next, She Disappears from The Face of the Earth On top of a stunning mountain in Israel, award-winning inventor Chase Johnson proposes to his girlfriend, Abby. She cries, “Yes,” and they celebrate as their mutual friend, Tiffany, takes photos. Chase runs to get his buddy Billy, so the four of them can celebrate together. When the men return, all they find are shattered cell phones and a broken camera. The girls have vanished. Chase reports the disappearance to the local police, embassy, and social media, but they offer little help. Desperate to find her, the men use their own innovative technology to follow leads from one end of Israel to the other. When all hope seems lost, Chase discovers Abby and Tiffany's abductors, an ancient pagan cult still alive and well. And unless Chase can win a race against time, the cult is ready to make Abby a human sacrifice at their temple called The Gates of Hell. Get ready for a thriller that will set your heart pounding and your mind racing long into the night. You can find out more about Andy Dewitt on his WEBSITE. Like to listen on the go? Thirty years ago, this small little UK thriller from writer/director Neil Jordan took the world by storm - it was a surprise hit at the box office, received near universal critical acclaim, and it also received seven Oscar nominations including for Best Picture. What ended up being the main driver for much of this film's buzz and success was that it contained a "The Twist" which most audiences weren't expecting....and not just ANY twist either. ;) Besides that twist, the film features a stellar cast including Stephen Rea, Miranda Richardson, Forest Whitaker, and Jaye Davidson who made QUITE the impression in only his first film role. It's basically a romantic thriller focusing on a former IRA terrorist (Rea) who's on the run and tries to redeem himself by seeking out to protect the girlfriend of a man (Whitaker) who he held captive. Let's find out if this '90's classic is more than JUST its twist.....Host: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

The author Elliot Mason talks about his book “The Arlington Orders”. The book is a fictional political suspense thriller based on the true story of the lost treasury of the Confederacy. It follows the path of two historians who accidentally stumble upon clues they believe could lead them to the discovery of the South's gold and silver reserves that mysteriously disappeared near the end of the Civil War. However, their naïveté makes them unaware that others are searching for it too. What begins as an innocent treasure hunt soon deteriorates into a deadly chase in which the result could change the very future of the nation. His highly anticipated second novel, The Legal Killer, serves as a sequel and covers the controversial issues surrounding the corruption in Department of Justice. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lucia-matuonto/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lucia-matuonto/support Learn more about your ad choices.
