On the Saturday April 13, 2024 edition of the Richard Crouse Show we'll meet Phil Heath. Fans of bodybuilding will recognize his name as a seven-time Mr. Olympia winner, having won the competition every year from 2011 to 2017. His incredible athletic career was slowed by health concerns, but his strength of character and intensity is captured in a new film co-produced by Dwayne Johnson, “Breaking Olympia: The Phil Heath Story,” which is now available on the SuperChannel. It's the untold story of how he battled back from injury in his quest to become the greatest of all. Later on we'll meet Tassie Cameron. Tassie is an award-winning screenwriter who was the head writer and executive producer on the series Rookie Blue and creator of the show Pretty Hard Cases. Today we're talking about her latest gig, as the producer of “Law and Order Toronto: Criminal Intent.” We talk about the show, and what it takes to quote, unquote, play a dead body on the legendary franchise.
When Tassie Cameron first saw the opening credits for Law and Order Toronto: Criminal Intent, complete with the iconic DUN DUN sound effect, she felt a shiver up her spine. It was Cameron who was entrusted with the legendary series' first foray beyond American borders, serving as show runner and head writer for the Canadian franchise. Tassie says Toronto is a natural fit, with its diverse population, distinct neighbourhoods and yes, rampant crime scene. There are differences, however, in our criminal justice system, and those can pose a challenge, along with the demanding responsibility to get the show right. Tassie Cameron has a shiny resume, having written and produced a slew of award winning TV series such as Pretty Hard Cases, Flashpoint, Rookie Blue and Degrassi: The Next Generation. The daughter of crime reporter Stevie Cameron, Tassie grew up with the need to know whydunit as much as who. We talk about crime and corruption, using a Canadian cast and crew, and how Toronto is finally ready for its close-up. You Can watch this episode on YouTube. I had so much fun zooming with Karen Robinson, who lays down the law on the new Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent."Toronto is its own character in the show,” says Robinson, who loves that the city is representing itself for a change instead of somewhere else. “This is about us.”Robinson plays Inspector Vivienne Holness on this latest extension of the L&O franchise, which also stars Aden Young and Kathleen Munroe. And, yes, she played a zanier cop shop boss on another Tassie Cameron-helmed series, Pretty Hard Cases. If she had to count all the police characters she has played, well, “it's been a lot.”Robinson came with her family from Jamaica at 16, moving first to Alberta where she studied under the great theatre showman Robin Phillips. She has since shone in everything from Slings and Arrows to Schitt's Creek.Feel her joy and energy in this spirited conversation. Then check her out on Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent Thursday nights on Citytv.

Wendy has a problem with rules. But some rules matter. Like the rules of improv. Naomi Snieckus loves those. And so does Maureen. Naomi talks about Improv Rule #1: Yes, And. About the importance of supporting a partner in comedy or drama or a podcast. And yes, in life.Naomi started doing improv at Second City in Toronto, and is now an actor, producer, writer and director. She was on “Mr. D", “Degrassi”, “Pretty Hard Cases”, and voices a ton of cartoons. During “Me Too” she launched The Firecracker Department which supports creative women and non-binary people. She's also hosting a new podcast with Amanda Brugel called the Blaze Sessions. They are very supportive partners! A Video version of this episode appears here. A transcript of the episode is here. With a career spanning decades and a multitude of incredible roles in beautiful shows, it's no wonder actor Wendy Crewson is one of Canada's brightest and most beloved stars. With credits like Air Force One, Good Sam, Pretty Hard Cases, she is also known as a staunch advocate for ACTRA and FilmOntario and for the role she's played in helping change the landscape of the industry. But, Wendy says she's learned the most important person to stand up for, ultimately, is herself. She tells Naomi and Amanda about how much she loves to celebrate her own accomplishments and those of her fellow actors (she still gets excited about award nominations), especially when it comes to the next generation. She also shares that even after all these years, nothing will ever beat the rush of going into an audition room. Wendy Crewson has courage to wear an orange formal gown to a casual event, to stand up for what she believes in and above all, to be herself.
Our Guest today is Wendy Crewson Wendy Crewson was the recipient of a star on Canada's Walk of Fame in 2015; and the Earle Grey Award, given to fewer than 32 collective recipients since 1986, in recognition by the ACCT and the Canadian Entertainment Industry, for Lifetime Achievement in Television. One of Canada's premier actresses, Wendy Crewson has garnered critical and popular acclaim, as well as multiple awards, for her extensive body of work in film and television. Her resume features more than 100 titles, including credits like: Sarah Polley's indie feature AWAY FROM HER; THE VOW, with Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum; the Winnie Mandela biopic WINNIE, alongside Jennifer Hudson and Terrance Howard; THE SANTA CLAUSE trilogy opposite Tim Allen; THE CLEARING, with Robert Redford; Eduardo Ponti's BETWEEN STRANGERS, with Sophia Loren; THE LAST BRICKMAKER IN AMERICA, with Sidney Poitier; BICENTENNIAL MAN with Robin Williams; THE SIXTH DAY with Arnold Schwarzenegger; and of course, her role as Harrison Ford's First Lady in AIR FORCE ONE. Throughout her illustrious career, Wendy has amassed more nominations and awards in Canada than any other actress for portraying real women. These are some of her most wellregarded roles and they include: Sue Rodriguez (who went all the way to The Supreme Court of Canada to fight Doctor Assisted suicide while fighting ALS); “Jane Doe” (who made legal history when she sued the police for negligence after being the fifth victim of a serial rapist and realizing that the police knew details and had done nothing to prevent further rapes); Lorraine Evenshen (who tells the story from her own perspective as the wife of popular CFL star Terry Evanshen, who lost his memory after waking up from a coma caused by a car crash); and finally, Louise Arbour (who as the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for both the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and Rwanda, made history with the first indictment of a sitting head of state, for war crimes, the first conviction for genocide and the first to recognize sexual crimes as crimes against humanity). Wendy starred in five seasons of CTV's hit medical drama SAVING HOPE, for which she won Best Actress in a Featured Supporting Role at the 2013 CSAs. Wendy was also in the critically acclaimed, Oscar-nominated film, ROOM with Brie Larson; and appeared opposite Ellen Page in Patricia Rozema's INTO THE FOREST. Wendy was recently seen in the films KODACHROME, with Ed Harris and Jason Sudeikis; DEATH WISH with Bruce Willis.; and director Mimi Leder's timely feature, ON THE BASIS OF SEX. On the small screen, Wendy recently starred on CBS's hit medical drama, GOOD SAM; CBC's popular series FRANKIE DRAKE; in addition to the Hallmark series, WHEN HOPE CALLS; while also shooting the second season of DEPARTURE for Peacock/Global; and her recurring role on TITANS for HBO Max. Before that, she starred in the CTV/ION series THE DETAIL, for which she was nominated for a 2019 CSA. She also recurred in the AMC series THE SON, opposite Pierce Brosnan; and in THE OCTOBER FACTION for Netflix. Wendy continues to be as busy as ever. She joined the cast of CBC's hit procedural, PRETTY HARD CASES for its final season, while also shooting in the highly anticipated series GRAY, opposite Patricia Clarkson. Next, she appears in the independent films BACKSPOT, from director D.W. Waterson; and SAM opposite Elliot Page. We dived right in and started our conversation with the all-consuming fear of ‘coming out' --and we ended – appropriately, with her sense of belonging in a community and industry that she is so passionate about.
Whatever Adrienne C. Moore is selling - we're buying! As the unpredictable drug squad detective Kelly Duff on Pretty Hard Cases, with some other pretty big roles under her belt (hello, Orange is the New Black!) we'd assume Adrienne had achieved GOAT status. But she proudly proclaims that she'd rather just keep striving for it than have already reached it. After a successful career in marketing, Adrienne tells Amanda and Naomi how she learned how to think of herself as a product and work within her own acting wheelhouse to make the shift into acting. And although she's a self-branded genius, she does make mistakes - and admits she is just as honest about them as the successes she's had. And let's not forget how she not only got “camera ready” for this interview in 3 min flat AND she continues to forge a path for BIPOC creatives to be accommodated on set. Yes - the word “unstoppable” comes to mind!
We know Meredith MacNeill as by-the-book, yet frazzled detective Sam Wazowski on Pretty Hard Cases and for her absurd and hilarious comedic sketches on Baroness Von Sketch Show which she wrote and starred in….but the truth is - she's more than just the wild roles she plays on screen. The depth that she carries through her work comes from recognizing the truth of her life and how she sees the world. She shares with Naomi and Amanda that part of her comedic process involves cozying up to her best friend: failure. From her upbringing in Halifax to performing on stages in the UK, Meredith held hands with her inner voice and her fearlessness to help her achieve her dream to fly. Oh, and if you think perimenopause and chin hairs suck - she'll definitely convince you otherwise.
The incomparable Amanda Brugel should truly be recognized as an artistic chameleon. With her seamless ability to transition from comedy to drama - in roles like Karina Duff on Pretty Hard Cases and Rita Blue and then effortlessly to her work on The Handmaid's Tale - Amanda is constantly reinventing herself and breaking away from the proverbial “box” that many actors seem to fall into. But her successes haven't come without setbacks, and she tells Naomi how she's learned to be open about her struggles throughout her life, and also to take time to appreciate the little “delights'' that appear. She shares that one of the most valuable muscles for her is the one that helps her recognize the victories in her life, big or small. And, even though she knows life is a never ending journey, Amanda is learning to always show up as herself, and learning that no matter what role or struggle she may face, she can always find a way to Brugel-ize it.

You want to talk Pretty Hard Cases? That's the title of the new Toronto-based detective drama premiering Wednesday, Feb. 3 on CBC. It stars Meredith MacNeill (Baroness von Sketch Show) and Adrienne C. Moore (Orange is the New Black). They were the first choices of executive producers, writers and showrunners Tassie Cameron (Rookie Blue) and Sherry White (Little Dog) -- a couple of pretty hard cases themselves. On this lively podcast episode, the producers break down why they felt the time was ripe for this series now, what cool, '70s tunes they pumped into the soundtrack and how a four month delay in filming due to COVID may have actually been a blessing in disguise.
