Conner and SmithMatt Conner and Stephen Gregory Smith are modern musical theatre writers who explore the darker side of human nature, while searching for the light.
In this episode we discuss the irksome texture of kiwi, juice from concentrate, the sonic warfare waged by the words “ceetus lupeedus” , how boring space seems, the angler fish, studying bone marrow in space, the blurring of lines between adults and kids, a boy band called Microbe, what a big brat Zenon is, the tragic aunt Judy character, the sonic equivalent of “the dress”, and SO MUCH MORE!!!
Conversations is bringing you a summer treat — a collection of Richard's most memorable guests through out the years. After a cruel and abusive childhood and an adulthood full of unemployment and homelessness, Gregory Smith decided to step out of society and into the solitary life of a hermit, living in the elements in a forest in Northern NSW. Gregory is an academic in the School of Arts and Social Sciences at Southern Cross University in New South Wales. He recently completed his PhD highlighting the experiences of children raised in institutional care. For much of his adulthood Gregory was homeless; and by his own admission, a 'do not approach' figure. For ten years he lived as a hermit in a forest in northern NSW, catching his own food. After decades of life on the margins, he now has a place of his own, and is a popular teacher.Gregory's childhood, in and out of orphanages, boys' homes and youth detention centres, made getting a foothold in regular society a massive challenge. This episode of Conversations contains discussions about child abuse, orphanages, boys homes, child psychology, sociopaths, homelessness, unemployment, hermit, solitude, forests, rainforest, New South Wales, NSW, recluse, sociology, university, relationships, memoirs, autobiographies, Southern Cross Univerity, PHD, Order of Australia.

Much like season 3 of everwood in April of 2003 we are back from a mid-season hiatus, salty af, and experiencing every human emotion. Though this episode was recorded in 2023 we find we feel pretty much the same in 2024. We're just a podcast standing in front of a podcatcher experiencing trauma. The doctor and us both knew a lot about that. Season 3, Episode 16: A Mountain Town Season 3, Episode 17: Fate Accomplis Season 3, Episode 18: Fallout The Everwood Pinecast is a weekly seasonal recap podcast about the WB original TV series Everwood, that aired from 2002-2006. Closing out Spooky Adjacent Month, Don picked the 1998 film Small Soldiers. Directed by Joe Dante, it depicts two factions of toys which turn sentient after mistakenly being installed with a military microprocessor, in turn putting two families in danger when one faction turns lethal. With special guest: Dr Gregory Smith… in conversation with Bill Kable When asked if he sometimes pinches himself and wonders if all that has gone before is true, Gregory Smith says not sometimes but all the time. Our guest today has a truly amazing story that should encourage all of us. After a traumatic childhood Gregory was always trying to escape from his surroundings and became something of an escape artist. Except that he did not escape and his efforts just led to painful encounters with the country Police of NSW. When his mother deceived him and left him at an orphanage in Armidale he spent 19 months experiencing institutional abuse. To make matters worse he was thinking all the time that his sisters were enduring something similar at the same institution after they were separated from him by the nuns on arrival. Following these experiences Gregory understandably would not trust adults. Having left school at the age of 14 and not being trained in anything useful Gregory found himself homeless, friendless and frequently jobless. It was only when he followed a road that led off the highway near Mullumbimby in northern NSW that he finally found peace in the isolation and tranquillity of a rainforest. Podcast (mp3)
In this excellent episode, Nancy and Jose are joined in the studio by Gregory Smith, the Chancellor of the San Diego Community College District .What a journey. The feeling that Gregory Smith must have when he visits any of the four colleges within the District. The feeling of once having been a community college student to now running four community colleges which serve over 90,000 San Diegans each year. Had it not been for the "entry point" to higher education he enjoyed, he likely would have never graced the campuses of Arizona State and USC. We also learn from Gregory the difference in public perception between four-year universities and community colleges, with community colleges enjoying an upward trend. In general, perhaps because of access, affordability, and connection to workforce needs, the San Diego Community College District enjoys a strong public perception. An excellent episode on filling gaps in the community with Gregory Smith. Here are some other takeaways from the interview:SDCCD has four colleges: City College, Mesa College, San Diego Miramar, and the College for Continuing Education, each offering different programsThey became a living wage employer as of January 1, 2024His view that while community colleges have always been culturally responsive, he wants to expand the cultures they are responding to How humility informs their growth plansThe growing list of four year degree programs offered by SDCCD, including new ones either coming or under development in cybersecurity, public safety administration, PT Assistant, and possibly nursingThe answers to the rapid-fire questions. An excellent interview from a passionate gap minder. Thank you, Gregory, for your contributions in San Diego, and for joining us on The Gap Minders.Enjoy this episode and be sure to subscribe to the show.If you have any questions or want to contact Nancy or Jose, please send an email to podcast@uwsd.org. Most mothers would do everything possible to protect their child, but what Lois Nadean Smith did in 1982, was inexcusable and unwarranted. Lois had already earned herself the nickname 'Mean Nadean' and taught her son to follow in her footsteps. Together, the evil dirtbag duo ruthlessly tortured and killed an innocent woman, Cynthia Baillie, all in the name of revenge. “All of my successes massively outpace my capabilities. Like when you meet me, you're like, ‘I can't believe that guy did all the shit that he did'. Because I look homeless and I'm not really as bright as I pretend to be. I'm not self-deprecating—it's a fact. My success outpaces my capability because I found other people that were more capable than me."Kasim Aslam is the CEO of Solutions 8, co-founder of Driven Mastermind, and co-host of the Perpetual Traffic podcast. He has built four multi-million dollar agencies and had two exits, one of which was an eight-figure deal. Kasim's success in the agency world, particularly in the Google Ads space, and his ability to scale businesses with minimal initial capital make him an impressive figure in the industry. He's also one of the most energetic and insightful guests this podcast has seen thus far. This episode of Agency Journey will be a perfect listen for agency owners and entrepreneurs looking to remove themselves from the business, identify and keep their most valuable team members, and build the mindset that will take your operation to the next level.Kasim shared a whirlwind of inspiration, including but not limited to: the crucial differences between employees (farmers) and entrepreneurs (hunters); the power of offering equity to top performers; the importance of hiring people who can outperform you in their roles; and the benefits of seeking out hard challenges for personal and professional growth.Episode Insights:
In spite of all the soup we still believe it when we say it's another perfect day (in Everwood). The highs are high and the lows are soup, and much like Amandy this block of episodes are a stew with all manner of ingredients. We keep.the soup stewing with time art, Ghosts of Dr plot past, and spirited discussion of syrup grading in honor of our dad Treat who never would have given his lady love fancy syrup. Did we really produce 20 episodes of the everwoos pinecast so we might regain access to NEW YORK CITAAAYYYYY? Tune in next time to find out. This week, we're taking up arms against the British and making moves on our dead wife's sister as we get downright independent with 2000's The Patriot, directed by Roland Emmerich, and starring Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger, Jason Isaacs, Tom Wilkinson, Joely Richardson, Chris Cooper, Rene Auberjonois, Donal Logue, Adam Baldwin, Gregory Smith and a young Logan Lerman. Try as we might to tie into this week's release of Alex Garland's Civil War, this is a war epic about the War of Independence, and just like Independence Day, when America needed a rousing, slightly fascistic display of patriotism via action cinema, you need the propagandist touch that can only come from a German. This movie is also nearly three hours long, so needless to say, Hayley hated it. Meanwhile J Mo's got a theatrical field report on Sydney Sweeney's latest, Immaculate, and Hayley's getting down with some crunchy sugar cereals. Other works discussed on this episode include The First Omen, The Omen, The First Purge, The Purge, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Dark Side of the Ring, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Ghostbusters (2016), Isle of Dogs, The French Dispatch, Asteroid City, The Royal Tenenbaums, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Moonfall, Small Soldiers, Zodiac, Full Metal Jacket, Firefly / Serenity, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, The Princess Diaries, Waterworld, Escape From New York, the music of Queens of the Stone Age, Ima Robot and Diana Ross & The Supremes, and the video games Spider-Man: Miles Morales and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. We'll be back next week as we stay in the early 2000s with a completely different type of picture: the 2004 rom-com Along Came Polly, an unseen selection from Hayley's collection that packs a dynamite supporting performance from Philip Seymour Hoffman. If you'd like to watch the movie along with us it is currently streaming on Starz in Canada at the time of publication. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Happy HoliDunst, everyone! Welcome to five days of continuous podcasts about our favourite Kirsten Dunst movies. On the first day, Bree and Mike Stephens take a stroll through the toy aisle and into a simpler time – a time when we were weirdly casual about guns, bomb threats and abject cruelty. Joe Dante's Small Soldiers was famously panned, but as Bree and Mike look back at this movie, they find that it might be… almost good? There's some brilliant one-liners, an absolutely charming final performance from Phil Hartman and, of course, Kirsten Dunst shines against the snoozy Gregory Smith. Also, does David Cross secretly suck as an actor? Anyway, chainsaw skateboard!!

With special guest: Dr Gregory Smith OAM… in conversation with Bill Kable Now well and truly out of the forest he described in his first book, Gregory Smith has produced a new book called Better than Happiness in which he lets us know how he has progressed in the five years since we heard from him last time. Gregory’s life story is extraordinary and uplifting. Gregory had a type of epiphany when sitting on a park bench in 1999 when a stranger showed him some kindness. From there it has been one step at a time. After being told so many times while he was growing up that he was stupid, he slowly began to realise that this was wrong. He found that he could learn more things than just how to survive day to day. In fact he achieved recognition in an academic field. Senior people were coming to him for advice. Podcast (mp3)
There was quite a reaction to our last session with Dr Gregory Smith, the guy who faced extraordinary trauma, turned his back on society, walked into a forest and stayed there for 10 years. Over the four seasons of The Mojo Sessions, there have been some definite themes appear. The guys at Doublestar, the production team behind The Mojo Sessions, suggested we do a Megamix of five trauma-related conversations back to back as a holiday superset. It's a long-form episode containing five conversations in all. We start with Iris Gardner, the wife of former Navy Seal Commander-in-Chief, Jason Gardner. Iris had a brutal upbringing, living in a house with a sexual predator who was a friend of the family. Iris is brave, humble, and out to share her story so that we can benefit from her learnings. Starts: 00:07:50 Then we meet Preethaji, who runs the O & O Academy in India. Preethaji has such a simplistic way of demonstrating how many of us, through our thoughts and actions, live in a world of suffering. This conversation shows how we go from a suffering state into a beautiful state. I've interviewed Preethaji a few times, and I find her approach to life and her philosophy a huge advantage. Starts 01:49:15 Sarah Woodhouse is a research psychologist who specialises in trauma. We talk about trauma and traumatic experiences. What Dr Sarah wrote about in her book "You're Not Broken" is that many people who are suffering from trauma or a traumatic experience say that they feel broken. Sarah is fantastic. This conversation sets up how we can reframe trauma and traumatic experiences. Starts 03:01:00 I first heard Dr Bruce Perry in a conversation with Oprah on 'Oprah Soul Sessions'. At that time, Oprah said that her conversation with Bruce Perry was one of the most important she had ever had. Oprah realised that rather than exploring what was 'wrong with her', the better question was 'what happened to her?'. Anyone who knows me or has heard me speak in the last number of years will know that I think Dr Bruce Perry's book (written with Oprah) entitled "What Happened To You", is a most valuable resource, as what happened to you quite often is anchored down in a backstory. Starts - 04:15:07 The lovely Yemi Penn spoke to us about rewriting our story. Your past does not equal your future. By embracing and acknowledging your past and rewriting that narrative, we can change it to how it can benefit today. Yemi is the author of the book "Did You Get The Memo", which is about changing that backstory. Starts 05:27:37 Listen to all five Megamixes back to back or break them up on several days as you go to and from the office or away on a road trip. These five conversations form the first in a Megamix series that will centre on one particular topic each time, which, for this Megamix, is trauma. One thing that occurred to me when we were putting this together was that when you know somebody who is struggling, perhaps experiencing a challenging time of their life, or facing trauma or a dramatic experience, I think this Megamix is gold—five opinion leaders who each have an amazing story, philosophies and content to share. If you know somebody and think they can benefit, shoot them the link to this Megamix on trauma. THE ORIGINAL SESSION INFO EP 109: Iris Gardner - Building The Strength To Emerge From The Darkness Iris Gardner spent her childhood off the grid, an ideal life in the woods for a kid, totally off-grid, heading out on horseback, confronting mountain lions, reading books, growing and hunting their food, until the day a sexual predator moved into the house. This family friend would throw the life of a young 5-year-old child into unspeakable darkness. Hear a remarkable story from a truly remarkable lady who has emerged from that darkness with a message that will change how we view life and the lives of our children. EP 110: Preethaji - Creating A Life of Purpose, Free From Suffering Preethaji, one of the world's leading female philosophers, founded O&O Academy, a philosophy and meditation school, with her husband Krishnaji. She believes that you can live, as many do, a mediocre life with a contrived purpose, but a great life, career or relationship can only happen with an authentic purpose. Preethaji works with corporate leaders to discover purpose, connection and how to live in a beautiful state. Preethaji leads us to a whole new way of discovering love, passion, and creativity. Ep 223: Dr Sarah Woodhouse - The Disempowering Enemy Within Dr Sarah Woodhouse is a Research Psychologist specialising in trauma, helping people face this world and their past. Her book 'You're Not Broken', teaches us what trauma is (it's probably not what you think), how to recognise it, why it's there and how your past is likely holding you back. Sarah explains the pitfalls of ignoring awkward, upsetting episodes and how true freedom comes from looking back at your past with honesty. Using the latest research-based techniques, her own experience, and her twelve years of trauma research, Dr Sarah Woodhouse speaks with authority on this critical topic. Ep 226: Dr Bruce Perry - Heal Your Mental and Emotional Wounds and Move Forward Professor of Psychiatry at Northwestern University School of Medicine, Chicago, Dr. Bruce Perry's new book 'What Happened to You?' was written with Oprah. 'What Happened to You?' is a book that helps heal our mental and emotional wounds, wounds that many carry for decades and never give a thought to. Through groundbreaking scientific & emotional insights on behavioural patterns and actual brain science, Dr Perry explores how we can shift our approach to personal trauma by asking what happened to us. Oprah believes her first conversation with Dr Perry was one of the most important and impactful of her career. Ep 323: Yemi Penn - Rewrite Your Story Documentary producer Yemi Penn believes we should create our own memo. Author of 'Did You Get The Memo?', Yemi, born in Nigeria, has endured her fair share of trauma for herself and her family, including childhood abuse and homelessness. Yet, today Yemi is a self-made millionaire, owning multiple businesses across multiple countries. Yemi shares mindset adjustments to rip up our old backstory and create the new life we want, daring us to create a new narrative for our life and ultimately write our memo.

Gregory Smith turned his back on society to live in a forest as a hermit, surviving for ten years on frogs, bats, ants and water from streams. Today, Gregory has a PhD in Sociology and teaches at Southern Cross University. This is a remarkable story of a man, once haunted by personal demons, who turned his life around. It's a universal story of hope, reminding us that there is always a way out, no matter how dark or desperate our circumstances are. Gregory Smith's childhood was the stuff of nightmares. I won't go too deep here but the snapshot is neglect, violence, abuse and misery. At 10, his mother left him at an orphanage, where the abuse continued, from 14 he was in and out of juvenile detention and by the time he reached his 20's, he was an addict and alcoholic, living on the fringe of society, with significant mental health issues. For decades he was homeless and for an entire decade, he lived as a hermit in a tropical rain forest (without shelter) in total isolation. In his late forties, he emerged from the forest weighing 41kg (at 5'10”, 178 cm's) and was at death's door. From that point until now, Gregory has fully recovered, been clean and sober for more than twenty years, earned a PhD in Sociology (Dr. Gregory Smith), is a Senior Lecturer at Southern Cross University (on his way to being a Prof.), has written an amazing book, has done a TED Talk, been featured on numerous media outlets (including Australian Story) and his story is nothing short of incredible and inspirational. Enjoy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
