Christopher Scalia, senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, stops by the show to drop some culture on one Jonah Goldberg. The two discuss all things literature and what great books could give the conservative movement. Plus: George Eliot's conception of nationalism and Jonah's thoughts on the new season of Severance. If you're obsessed with pop culture but can't stand Rob Long and John Podhoretz, today's Remnant may be the weird, wonderful, and interruption-free GLoP alternative you've been waiting for. Jonah's joined for the first time by Christopher Scalia, former academic suit turned scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. Their paths recently crossed during an AEI panel on the legacy of cultural critic Paul Cantor, where they offered some exceptionally square-eyed geekery on TV shows both obvious and obscure. Jonah felt the event raised a number of urgent questions, so today, they provide answers: What happened to P.I. shows? Does The Godfather glamorize the mafia? How is wokeness influencing television? And is Chris really related to a famous justice? (Spoiler alert: Yes.) This episode is sponsored by our friends at FIRE. FIRE's mission is to safeguard and uphold the right of all Americans to freedom of speech. Be a part of the front line of a growing movement by joining the FIRE Update. This episode concerns one of the most vociferous dissents of all times: Justice Antonin Scalia's scathing opinion in United States v. Virginia, which was aimed at none other than his close friend and writer of the majority opinion, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. RBG's reaction to Scalia's fiery critique? Gratitude. As she put it, Justice Scalia's dissent was instrumental in sharpening her own opinion. There's a lot to be learned from this case not just about equality before the law, but about searching for common ground when there appears to be none and maintaining a friendship with people who have different views than your own. This episode is not only about the case that brought down single-sex education at the Virginia Military Institute; it's also about the importance of dissent in a society that is less tolerant of opposing viewpoints than ever. Scot and Jeff discuss Spoon with Christopher Scalia. Introducing the Band: Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are with guest Christopher Scalia. Christopher is co-editor of Scalia Speaks: Reflections on Law, Faith, and Life Well Lived and On Faith: Lessons from an American Believer. He's also the Director of Academic Programs at the American Enterprise Institute. Find him on Twitter at @cjscalia. Christopher's Music Pick: Spoon This band from Austin has a case as one of the greatest American rock bands of the past 25 years, but we suspect there are some music lovers who might not be familiar with them. The guys attempt to remedy that situation in this episode. Spoon, essentially, is vocalist/guitarist Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno, the only consistent members of the group. And there's that word: consistent. As you'll hear during the show, it's perhaps the best description of Spoon's output. They've never released a bum album. They've never taken a wrong turn sonically and continually put out interesting music. Over the years, the band has evolved from early efforts with clear Pixies/Pavement influences to clearly identifying a “Spoon Sound” — songs constructed with only the most essential elements, featuring shifting rhythms, tight drums, and rock-solid bass lines. Daniel's skill as a lyricist is in finding couplets and phrases that rattle around your head weeks after you've heard a song. Since GIRLS CAN TELL, the band has subtly added new elements to its songwriting, leaving behind a string of albums that all have their own identity yet that live up to high standards previously set. It's great album after great album, great song after great song. And, it's argued on the show, perhaps one of the greatest efforts of the decade of the '00s. We let the music do a lot of the talking on this episode. Give it a listen, and we're convinced you're going to come out the other side as a fanatic.
Academy Award winning actor Matthew McConaughey discusses his new book Greenlights, why he decided to write it and what he hopes readers get out of it. He also weighs in on the coronavirus pandemic, how he and his family have adjusted to their new normal and how the virus has impacted the entertainment industry. 2020 took Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in September. The ailing Justice died in the midst of the presidential election and a contentious fight to fill her vacant seat in the Supreme Court began almost immediately. Eventually, Ginsburg would be replaced by President Trump's nominee Amy Coney Barrett. While America was still mourning the feminist icon, we looked back at Justice Ginsburg's decades-long friendship with the late conservative Justice Antonin Scalia. We revisit our interview with Christopher Scalia, Justice Scalia’s son, who discussed that inspirational friendship and the legacies of both Justices. Plus, commentary by Retired Staff Sergeant Johnny Joey Jones.

Son of Justice Artinian Scalia: CHRISTOPHER SCALIAChristopher is the eighth of Justice Scalia's nine children and the co-editor of Scalia Speaks and On Faith, two previous collections of the late justice's writings. His political and cultural commentary has appeared on FoxNews.com and in the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and elsewhere.Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia in his own words: the definitive collection of his opinions, speeches, and articles on the most essential and vexing legal questions, with an intimate foreword by Justice Elena Kagan. A justice on the United States Supreme Court for three decades, Antonin Scalia transformed the way that judges, lawyers, and citizens think about the law. The Essential Scalia presents Justice Scalia on his own terms, allowing readers to understand the reasoning and insights that made him one of the most consequential jurists in American history. Known for his forceful intellect and remarkable wit, Scalia mastered the art of writing in a way that both educated and entertained. This comprehensive collection draws from the best of Scalia’s opinions, essays, speeches, and testimony to paint a complete and nuanced portrait of his jurisprudence. This compendium addresses the hot-button issues of the times, from abortion and the right to bear arms to marriage, free speech, religious liberty, and so much more.
