We had the pleasure of interviewing Citizen Cope over Zoom video! The title of Citizen Cope's new record is The Victory March—a phrase that might seem curious considering the chaotic state of the world. But for the singer/songwriter/producer, that's exactly why this concept represented the message he sought to express right now.For Citizen Cope, born Clarence Greenwood, the songs on The Victory March mark a new sense of accomplishment and ambition, both personally and creatively. Musically, this material—co-produced by Alex Elena (Alice Smith, Lily Allen)—adds more expansive arrangements, with horns and strings, to Cope's signature blend of hip-hop-based beats with blues, soul, folk, and rock. “Give Love a Try (Dancing Lullaby)” offers a vision of romantic bliss atop a percolating dub reggae track, while “Time Comes Around” goes from sparse chords to surging strings, matching the theme of perseverance and conviction. The grander approach began when Cope was asked to write for a film, and while the project didn't end up using his music, he got the song “Close to You” out of it. It's evident in the appropriately sweeping, dramatic feel of the title track, its aspirational lyric (“I fought a winless battle / With the judges that carry the news / I found a place where the planets move / To get close to you”) delivered over a neck-snapping beat.Maybe, though, this sense of confidence and purpose comes from the lessons of patience that Cope has learned from his own extraordinary career. Victory March is being released as his 2004 album The Clarence Greenwood Recordings approaches platinum status, despite never actually appearing on the charts. Although “Let the Drummer Kick,” from his self-titled 2002 debut, went gold, and his compositions have been recorded by such artists such as Carlos Santana, Sheryl Crow, Richie Havens, and Dido, as well as appearing in numerous films and TV shows, for years Cope couldn't find his place in the music industry. In 2010, Cope tried a new path, founding his own record label, Rainwater Recordings. He released The Rainwater LP later that year, followed in 2012 by One Lovely Day. But then came seven years in which he didn't put out any new music.Cope returned with Heroin and Helicopters in 2019 and The Pull of Niagara Falls in 2021. When he started working on the new record, though, he found that he was having problems with his voice. With The Victory March, Citizen Cope feels he has nothing left to prove. Twenty years in, he's found that there's really no choice other than to pursue his own sound and speak his own truth—which has proven to be about survival and hope rather than despair, a message the world desperately needs to hear. We want to hear from you! Clarence Greenwood, aka Citizen Cope, is a renowned singer, songwriter and producer. He has built an entire career on trusting his gut and following his muse, and if his new album, ‘Heroin & Helicopters,’ is any indication, his instincts are sharper now than ever before. The success of his music has always been a slow burn, rather than a flash in the pan. His single “Let The Drummer Kick” went Platinum without any support from commercial radio. The Washington Post called him “DC’s finest export since Marvin Gage” and Rolling Stone raved that his “uncommon chords and harmonies combine delicate dissonance with unexpected flash of beauty”. Of course we hoped to catch him on tour for his brand new album but of course in these unprecedented times, those plans changed. Undeterred Cope joins us from his living room for a conversation about resilience, art & creativity during difficult times, and fatherhood. For this episode, we sat down with the legendary songwriter/producer Citizen Cope otherwise known as Clarence Greenwood. The first time I heard Citizen Cope, I was 12 years old and watching the movie Coach Carter. At the time, I didn’t know who Citizen Cope was, but I knew that his song made me feel connected to players in the movie. Now when I listen to his music as a slightly more mature adult, I also feel a deeper sense of connection to myself. His production and lyrics foster a certain sense of introspection paired with observations of everything that’s going on in the world. As Cope explains in an interview with Billboard, “I think everybody feels like there are elements in this world that are not so fuzzy and warm, and we see the harshness in the reality of life. Life is not an easy thing, but we need to look for a commonality of love and empathy that can conquer even the worse situations.” It’s been about 7 years since Citizen Cope released a full-length project. He just put out his latest album called Heroin and Helicopters and you should probably listen to it. It’s really good. The title of the album derives from a conversation that Cope had with Carlos Santana at the Fillmore in San Francisco. Santana told him to stay away from the two H’s - Heroin and Helicopters. Music artists haven’t had good track records from either of those. And it makes for a hell of an album title. In this conversation, Cope and I talk about the connection between poetry and songwriting, Cope scalping tickets as a teenager in DC learning street economics, eating steaks with Matthew McConaughey, and dealing with stage fright. Even if you aren’t interested in songwriting and production, or maybe you’re not a fan of Citizen Cope, I encourage you to listen to the entirety of the conversation. We talk about a lot of things common to the human experience and things that anyone can apply to a struggle that they’re going through. And you’ll probably turn into a Cope fan by the end.
