You may be driven to tears during this episode as Lo Moon's Matt Lowell recounts the time the guy driving their tour bus searched for their gig using the North Star instead of Google Maps; composer Daniel Davies' driver decided he was going to drink and drive the 16 hours to Canada without a bathroom break; recording artist Arsun had a European driver who truly believed it's the journey not the destination; and the inimitable Citizen Cope tells us about the time he was on the road supporting a new record with a driver who had his own type of record - a criminal one. In today's captivating episode of "Anthology of Horror," we ventured deep into the heart of the South Carolina Lowcountry to unravel the chilling legend of the Boo Hag. This journey took us through the eerie folklore of the Gullah culture, where tales of night riders and spectral witches have been passed down through generations. We explored the origins of this fearsome entity, a creature that preys on the vitality of the unwary, leaving behind nothing but a husk of their former selves. Our exploration was not just a history lesson but a collection of bone-chilling tales that brought the Boo Hag into the modern world. From tragic love stories entwined with horror to sinister tales of vengeance and survival, we peeled back the curtain on this nightmarish figure, revealing the terror that lurks in the shadows of the Lowcountry. We also took a moment to highlight some must-see content from our network, including "Demented Darkness" and "Dark Side of the Nerd," both hosted by Scary Jerry, as well as "Foxhound43" on Rumble. And for our listeners looking to wear their fears, we announced the upcoming release of Death Valley Man shirts, a direct response to your requests. As we conclude this episode, the haunting melody of "Son's Gonna Rise" by Citizen Cope carries us out, leaving us with a lingering sense of unease and the unshakable feeling that the stories we've shared tonight are just the beginning. Until next time, stay curious, stay cautious, and keep listening to "Anthology of Horror."Support the showYe olde march shop https://www.aohpmerch.com/s/shopDemented Darkness https://open.spotify.com/show/2ausD083OiTmVycCKpapQ8Dark Side of the Nerd https://open.spotify.com/show/6cwN3N3iifSVbddNRsXRTuFoxhound43 https://rumble.com/user/Foxhound43
Rob INTERVIEWs Singer, Songwriter, Master of the Mouth Harp, Bluesman and Rapper - Philly's one and only G LOVE of G LOVE & SPECIAL SAUCE! Today Rob talks to G. Love (Garrett Dutton) about the 30th anniversary of G LOVE & SPECIAL SAUCE'S monumental 1994 self-titled debut album! Find out how G Love (Garrett) got his name, his street performing days in Boston, his love for Basketball, what inspired his early love of music and making music and much more! Garrett's dad Gary joins Rob and G about 30 minutes in and Rob asks him how he handled his son going into the music business and other things only a father would have the answers to ... haha ********* A little bit about G Love: Shortly after moving to Boston, Dutton (soon to be G Love) met Tom DeMille, a local producer Dutton later nicknamed T-Time, a reference to DeMille's appreciation for both music and golf). In 1993, DeMille flew to New York to meet with a Los Angeles–based producer who had connections to Michael Jackson (arranged through a family friend). DeMille shared some studio and live recordings of Dutton, who had just started going by the moniker G. Love. Later in 1993, G. Love and Special Sauce (as the trio was now called) signed a record deal and released their first album in 1994. Known for his live shows, he is often seen touring with Jack Johnson and Citizen Cope. As a producer, Johnson signed G. Love to his record label Brushfire Records. He has made appearances on the records of artists such as Slightly Stoopid and Donavon Frankenreiter, and has toured with Dave Matthews. In 2009, he collaborated with Zap Mama on their album ReCreation, singing on the single "Drifting". In 2010, G. Love joined forces with The Avett Brothers who produced and are featured on his album "Fixin' to Die". The album was released under the Brushfire label on February 22, 2011. G Love and Special Sauce's latest album PHILADELPHIA MISSISSIPPI was released on June 26, 2022. G Love and Special Sauce are currently on their 30th anniversary tour for their debut album selling out shows across the US ************ You can find G Love on Instagram @phillyglove, and on Facebook (G Love & Special Sauce). We had the pleasure of interviewing Citizen Cope over Zoom video! The title of Citizen Cope's new record is The Victory March—a phrase that might seem curious considering the chaotic state of the world. But for the singer/songwriter/producer, that's exactly why this concept represented the message he sought to express right now.For Citizen Cope, born Clarence Greenwood, the songs on The Victory March mark a new sense of accomplishment and ambition, both personally and creatively. Musically, this material—co-produced by Alex Elena (Alice Smith, Lily Allen)—adds more expansive arrangements, with horns and strings, to Cope's signature blend of hip-hop-based beats with blues, soul, folk, and rock. “Give Love a Try (Dancing Lullaby)” offers a vision of romantic bliss atop a percolating dub reggae track, while “Time Comes Around” goes from sparse chords to surging strings, matching the theme of perseverance and conviction. The grander approach began when Cope was asked to write for a film, and while the project didn't end up using his music, he got the song “Close to You” out of it. It's evident in the appropriately sweeping, dramatic feel of the title track, its aspirational lyric (“I fought a winless battle / With the judges that carry the news / I found a place where the planets move / To get close to you”) delivered over a neck-snapping beat.Maybe, though, this sense of confidence and purpose comes from the lessons of patience that Cope has learned from his own extraordinary career. Victory March is being released as his 2004 album The Clarence Greenwood Recordings approaches platinum status, despite never actually appearing on the charts. Although “Let the Drummer Kick,” from his self-titled 2002 debut, went gold, and his compositions have been recorded by such artists such as Carlos Santana, Sheryl Crow, Richie Havens, and Dido, as well as appearing in numerous films and TV shows, for years Cope couldn't find his place in the music industry. In 2010, Cope tried a new path, founding his own record label, Rainwater Recordings. He released The Rainwater LP later that year, followed in 2012 by One Lovely Day. But then came seven years in which he didn't put out any new music.Cope returned with Heroin and Helicopters in 2019 and The Pull of Niagara Falls in 2021. When he started working on the new record, though, he found that he was having problems with his voice. With The Victory March, Citizen Cope feels he has nothing left to prove. Twenty years in, he's found that there's really no choice other than to pursue his own sound and speak his own truth—which has proven to be about survival and hope rather than despair, a message the world desperately needs to hear. Even if you don’t recognize the name Clarence Greenwood right off the bat, chances are his moniker Citizen Cope still rings a bell. “When you're in that flow, it's the most magical feeling ever,” reflects the noted fine artist and graphic designer Jay Alders. “It feels like the colors are shooting out of my palette, it's just right there, and all I have to do is scoop up a glob of light that's emerging from my palette. If I can have someone look at my paintings and feel some of that, to me that's success.” Jay joins us on the podcast to discuss the collaborative nature of his work, which in addition to his own disarmingly original paintings also includes concert posters and album covers designed for artists such as Slightly Stoopid, 311, Donavon Frankenreiter, Citizen Cope, the Dirty Heads and Echo Movement. He has become well-known throughout the surfing community for his original surf art paintings, as well as for his “live art” performance displays at concerts and music festivals. His work—a blend of “surrealism, cartoon art and surrealism,” according to Forbes—has been presented in galleries across the United States and in Europe and featured at surf exhibitions from the North Shore of Oahu to the Jersey Shore, and he has lately emerged as a pioneer in the digital art space, with a series of dynamic, ocean-inspired NFTs. We're trading in our pens for our paintbrushes with this episode, but Jay's insights into the creative process, and the story of how he's turned his singular gifts into a successful freelance career, offer important takeaways for artists and writers alike. Today's guest is an American songwriter / producer. He has released seven studio LP's that have garnered him a loyal following despite never being fully embraced by mainstream media and commercial radio. Describing his music is difficult, he's been inspired by artists such as John Lennon and Stevie Wonder to Bob Marley and Outkast. His compositions have been recorded by Carlos Santana, Dido and Richie Havens. In 20 years of touring, he has built a devout following, performing at sold out theaters and ballrooms across the country. After OIP's inspiring conversation with Citizen Cope - a musical artist who has successfully tuned into his intuitively-creative process throughout his career - Tom and Drea reflect on the concept of “flow” - a mental state that is also referred to as “being in the zone”. This transformative feeling of energized focus and absorption is related to our sense of happiness and fulfillment, but how do we find it? Is there a formula for this special attunement of mind and body? And most importantly, can we bottle it?More about Mihaly CzikszentmihalyiMore about Citizen CopeFollow @citizencopeTo get in touch with us, email: podcast@optimistdrinks.comFor more about the show visit optimistdrinks.com and click on the journal pages.Follow Optimist drinks @optimistdrinksFollow Dr Drea Letamendi @arkhamasylumdocFollow Tom Johnstone @tommyjohnstone

026: Alfred Rutherford, Jr.We’re back! This is Play It Like It’s Music, thanks for listening. On Wednesday, February 11th of 2020 Music is not content. It's connection.I've been going through it a little bit, like ya do. It's kind of grounding for me to check in with you all every week. It keeps me aligned with what I'm doing but mainly also the why. We can lose track of the Why so easily. Thanks for being here.In Memoriam: Lyle MaysI just found out about the passing of Lyle Mays, apparently after a long recurring illness. And I'm pretty gutted by this one, even though great musicians are passing with some regularity lately. It's a huge, huge loss.By the way, don't feel bad if you've never heard of him. So many artists don't get to be in the news until they either win an Oscar or they die. If this is the case for you, please do yourself a favor and put his name into that search box. With literally any note that man ever played, I felt his depth and connection to what might best be called "Musical Infinity". In fact, f**k it. I'll borrow this phrase from Allen Toussaint, which he used to describe Chuck Berry: The man is a mountain.Lyle Mays. My early dalliances with modern instrumental music were propelled in a huge way, back when I was in high school, by listening obsessively to the Pat Metheny Group. It's actually tough for me to admit that, because later I came to reject that same music and any aesthetic remotely connected to it. I went through deep phases of both loving and hating both the sound and the actual music. It's all my own s**t, maybe you can relate. I can laugh about it now, but as we're developing in music and our tastes evolve, we uncover new areas and it's common to shift gears. Some people come out of the ground just like a potato and they never change what music they like. But I'm not one of those people. I have actually changed my musical tastes so many times that I frequently forget who I am. I listen really hard, and I also play hard and practice hard. I go hard in lots of directions, and one of these was deliberately trying to throw off my addiction to what you might call "finger jazz", that supernoodle, hyper-intricate polyphony that the Metheny vibe is most associated with. I'd been weaned on it, and I became convinced that I needed to wean myself off of it. I thought it might be holding me back from getting laid or something, who knows. It was a long time ago.It can happen, and my real reasons were sound but also sad: I didn't believe I'd ever be a good enough player to work in those circles. Not only did I lack confidence, but even hearing folks - friends of mine - who played at that level made me feel bad about myself. My string playing ability seemed stuck somewhere in space between the suzuki method and the world of guitar gods, and far from those extremes I grew very lonely. I plateaued there for a long time and started to feel like I was running out of air. It hurt, and I decided I no longer could afford to listen to music that didn't shine a light on my own path forward. The complexity was too intimidating for me.I stopped believing in anything but the simplest possible music, stuff I could try to play on my cello, and my path became very narrow. I laugh about it now because I eventually healed myself and my attitude and I found a way to start playing again. It was all in my head like you might guess. And my feelings about the Metheny group eventually settled down into a loving appreciation, the kind one might feel for a friend with whom I'd lost touch over the years but for whom you have great respect. And that's where that music lives for me, it's a place of deep respect. But of course we're fortunate that Metheny is still with us and still pushing music forward.None of this is about him though.Lyle Mays was and remains the core of my connection to that group, and also very close to the trunk of my own musical tree of influences. He made the keyboards not only sing, but shine. He brought a magic to the stage, and to the very idea of musicmaking. Genius. The man was an unbelievable genius, and the music just emanated from him. I really can't put into words just what kind of player he was. Marketing folks need to sort us into genres, but the more you love music the more music you love. The more you inhabit music, the more the music will inhabit you. Lyle Mays was one of the closest things I ever saw to a pure musical being. Go listen. Start maybe with his solo album from the year 2000 and work backward, or start from the beginning and work forward. Or anywhere really. Now that there's a bookend to the man's work, maybe I'll discover my own courage and dive back in to that infinite pursuit. Here's to you Lyle, thank you for your gifts and your work which will continue to teach us.In honor of Lyle, today we're going to hear from a great piano player.
