Matthew 16:21-17:8 | Kingdom Now: Listen to Him (with Jeff Stemple)

"Christmas is DYNOMITE"

What happens when following Jesus doesn't look like what you signed up for? In this message, guest speaker Jeff Stemple picks up where last week's sermon left off — right at the moment in Matthew 16 where Jesus begins speaking plainly about suffering, rejection, and death, leaving his disciples confused, disappointed, and wrestling with their faith. From there, Jeff walks us into one of the most breathtaking moments in all of Scripture: the Transfiguration. In Matthew 17, just six days after that difficult conversation, Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a mountain — and what they witness there is God's direct answer to their confusion and disillusionment. His face shining like the sun, Moses and Elijah present, and a voice from heaven declaring the same words spoken at Jesus' baptism — with one powerful addition: Listen to him. That command is the heartbeat of this message. When the disciples were struggling most, God didn't offer an explanation. He gave a command. And that command still stands for us today.Jeff unpacks three ways we can get to a place of genuine, obedient listening: seeing Jesus for who he truly is (not merely who we want him to be), resisting our desire to control and manage our circumstances, and following Jesus back down the mountain into the ordinary obedience of everyday life.If you've ever felt disillusioned in your faith — like the experience isn't matching the advertisement — this message is for you.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 8:00am, 9:30am & 11:00am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

In this episode, we dive into the powerful yet cautionary tale of Samson from the Book of Judges, where the story of this complex figure occupies a significant portion of the text. Samson's life illustrates how a lack of discipline, both from his upbringing and in his personal choices, shaped his destiny and impacted his role as a leader in Israel. Called from birth to uphold the Nazarite vow, Samson's journey is marked by defiance and retaliation rather than obedience. We explore his missteps, especially his decision to engage with people outside of God's kingdom, and how this path of compromise and self-will culminated in a series of personal and spiritual downfalls. The seven-day feast leading up to his wedding—an event drenched in indulgence and a departure from his calling—reveals the trajectory of a life lived on his own terms. This episode challenges us to consider the power of discipline, the importance of choosing godly influences, and the greater peace that comes when we surrender to God's rule over our lives. Nearly 20% of the book is dedicated to Samson's story, which begins in chapter 13. But before diving into his life, we reflect on the lesser-known judges mentioned in chapter 12—leaders whose names the world may forget, but whose faithfulness is remembered by God. We explore the powerful truth that even when we feel invisible, God knows and remembers those who revere Him.As we move into the story of Samson, we are reminded of the recurring cycle of sin and deliverance among the Israelites, reflecting a pattern we often see in our own lives. Despite Israel's repeated disobedience, God's mercy leads to their deliverance time and time again. This episode challenges us to recognize the dangers of self-promotion and to value being known by God, rather than seeking recognition from the world. In this series on the Book of Judges, we delve into the historical account of God's people entering and claiming the Promised Land, and their journey of understanding and embracing God's promises. Last week, we explored the first part of Judges chapter six, introducing the figure of Gideon—a character familiar to many churchgoers, particularly from the latter part of this chapter. This session will continue with an in-depth examination of Gideon's story and his pivotal role in delivering God's people from their enemies. The narrative highlights the contrast between God's promises and the people's faithfulness. Although God has granted the Promised Land, its full enjoyment is contingent upon their commitment and faithfulness to Him. Just as the Israelites faced bondage and defeat due to their lack of faithfulness, the same principle applies to us today. True enjoyment of God's promises requires a genuine and faithful relationship with Him.Gideon's story is one of both inspiration and hesitation. Despite his desire to see God's promises fulfilled and his willingness to serve, Gideon grapples with fear and uncertainty. This tension is illustrated by his request for signs from God, asking for confirmation through the dew on a fleece. This moment of testing reveals Gideon's sincere yet anxious heart, mirroring the doubts and hesitations many of us face in our own faith journeys.Join us as we unpack these themes and draw lessons from Gideon's experience, aiming to strengthen our own faith and understanding of God's promises.Watch all our sermons on our youtube channel "Flipside Christian Church"Join us in person 9:00am & 10:30am every Sunday morning.37193 Ave 12 #3h, Madera, CA 93636For more visit us at flipside.churchFor more podcasts visit flipsidepodcasts.transistor.fm

Karl paints a vivid picture of the cultural and moral decline of the Israelites during the time of Judges, likening it to contemporary issues such as governmental corruption, social unrest, and moral decay. The discussion focuses on the cyclical pattern found throughout the Book of Judges, where the Israelites fall into sin, experience oppression, cry out to God, and are subsequently delivered by God's chosen judges. The episode highlights the importance of repentance and God's unchanging grace, emphasizing that deliverance comes not because of the Israelites' merit but because of God's mercy. The speaker draws parallels between the ancient Israelites and modern listeners, urging a return to God's ways and a rejection of moral apathy.Listeners are introduced to the powerful figure of Deborah, a judge who exemplifies leadership and obedience to God amidst a backdrop of chaos and disobedience. The COVID-19 crisis has obviously got us focusing and learning about this emerging pandemic. Based on our research we have uncovered that the U.S. coronavirus testing infrastructure, unfortunately has not been as ready as any of us would of liked. Unfortunately this is impacting people all over the country that don't have access to tests. This is in contrast to countries such as China, South Korea and Germany where testing seems to be more pervasive and methodical.
