⁉️ Where did our Halloween traditions come from and how much have these traditions evolved over time? As we get further removed from our past the history of tradition can get lost in the midst of current culture but there is still plenty of information available to give us a great snapshot of how our ancestors celebrated, or not celebrated, the halloween season. In Episode 37 we discuss some of the traditions, mainly rooted in the Catholic Church, and discuss how they have evolved into what we now call Halloween. We also discuss 6 ways you can celebrate the season of halloween while also incorporating your Christian beliefs in the process! All Hallowtide is comprised of 3 days beginning on October 31st and ending on Nov 2nd and includes All Hallows Eve (shortened to Halloween), All Saints Day (All Hallows), and All Souls Day. We also discuss several ways that we can enjoy this holiday while still being a light in our communities and extending love to our neighbor! We know that peoples views of Halloween are broad and can be extreme on both sides of the spectrum but for us, we approach this season as an opportunity to spend time with friends and family and of course, any time is a good time to love your neighbor and show love. This is Father Jared Cramer from St. John's Episcopal Church in Grand Haven, Michigan, here with today's edition of Christian Mythbusters, a regular segment I offer to counter some common misconceptions about the Christian faith. Halloween is coming! At least, that is what my five-year old daughter has told me almost every day for the past two weeks. But now, this weekend, the wait will be over, and all spooky ghosts and ghouls will be on the prowl either Saturday or Sunday, looking for some tricks or treats. When I was growing up as a Christian, though, Halloween was a bit… uneven. On one side of my family, Halloween was seen as the devil's holiday and there was great danger in observing it. On the other side, it was just fun to dress up, no matter the costume. One year, I dressed as the devil for Halloween, but then had to change costumes before going to the church Halloween party. So, I thought this might be a good week to break the myths surrounding Christianity and Halloween. When the month of October turns into November, the Western church celebrates a sacred time often called Allhallowtide. The term “Allhallowtide” is derived from two words in Old English, the word halig (which means holy and is a synonym for saint) and the word tide (which means time). The celebration of Allhallowtide begins on October 31stwith All Hallows Eve (the Eve of All Saints', often shortened to Hallowe'en). It then continues with All Saints' Day on November 1 and the Commemoration of All Faithful Departed (commonly known as All Souls' Day) on November 2. The way in which this sacred time is observed varies around the world, but most Christians see it as an opportunity to celebrate Christ's triumph over death and our continued bonds to our loved ones who have died. When we look at Christianity in the British Isles in the Middle Ages, we see how these celebrations began interacting with the pagan Celtic holiday of Samhain, which fell each year in early November. Samhain marked the time at which the harvest had ended, and the days began growing darker. The Celtic people believed that during this time the boundaries between our world and the world of the dead thinned. The souls of the dead would even revisit their homes, seeking hospitality. And so, people would set an extra place at the dinner table to welcome them. Throughout the Middle Ages, the importance of these festivals spread throughout Europe. It was common to burn candles in your home in Austria and England to help guide souls back to their homes. In other countries, groups of poor people would travel door-to-door collecting soul cakes in exchange for praying for the dead. These traditions developed in Spain as well. In Spain, the tradition of bringing pan de ánimas (spirit bread) to the graves of loved ones was an important part of All Souls' Day. Christians would also cover the graves of loved ones with flowers and light candles to guide the departed home. As the Catholic Church arrived in Mexico with the sixteenth-century Conquistadors, they brought with them Spanish and Catholic celebrations surrounding All Saints' and All Souls'. The Mesoamerican Indigenous celebrations of the dead in the fall began to blend with Spanish and Catholic traditions surrounding the saints and all faithful departed and before too long the modern Día de los Muertos was born. On Día de los Muertos, just like Samhain and All Souls' Day in Ireland and England, those who celebrate this sacred time believe the border between the spirit world and our world dissolves and the souls of the dead can return to the living world to once again commune with family members for a brief period.Today the sacred time of All Hallows Eve, All Saints' Day, and All Souls' Day is celebrated in many different ways in congregations across the church and in many denominations. You can find out more about this history, and especially about the observance of Día de los Muertos in a small booklet I wrote with our church's Office of Latino/Hispanic Ministries. It's online at http://sjegh.com/muertos.But, no matter your cultural background, there's no need to be scared or anxious about Christians observing Halloween. A good scary movie or a fright in a haunted house on Halloween tends to make you feel more alive, which can be a fun and good thing, giving you appreciation for the life you have which is, of course, a gift from God. Maybe also take some time during this sacred season to remember the great heroes of faith, to remember those you love who have died. Because the truth is that nothing—not death, not even ghosts and ghouls—can separate us from the love of God which binds us together in Christ. Thanks for being with me. To find out more about my parish, you can go to sjegh.com. Until next time, remember, protest like Jesus, love recklessly, and live your faith out in a community that accepts you but also challenges you to be better tomorrow than you are today.

Is Halloween connected to the early church? When Rick asks Rachel this question, she shares some poignant historical facts. But Rachel doesn't stop there. She gives two primary groups of people who promote Halloween, and why they do it. As Rachel urges more people to research Halloween for themselves, she gives these search terms and keywords, to get you started: Keywords to search: Celts, Samhain, All Hallows' Eve, the goddess Pomona, Feralia, Moloch or Molech, soul cakes, pagans, Allhallowtide, Wiccan Feasts, druids, Baal, Nimrod, Irish potato famine, Roman Lemuria Festival, Roman Feasts of the Dead, etc. For access to future episodes, join: HERE Email: NextLevelFaith247@gmail.com or paste in browser: https://links.page/trickedpodcast
November 1st is the middle child in what is collectively called ‘Allhallowtide' – a triduum, three days of commemoration that includes All Hallows Eve – which has been shortened in our modern English to Halloween, all Saints Day, November 1, and All Souls Day, November 2nd. So, though we tend to think of October 31st as a blitz of candy and costumes, it is actually, originally, a Christian holiday and part of our feast calendar. So, if you ate too much candy last night, or were revelling in some other way, lovely and good, hope you enjoyed yourself. Now we gather on all saints day to remember all those who brought us safely to this moment of breath, all those who continue to uplift us, to gather us, to care for and love us, and to see within our precious selves that we are saintly also - not by what we do or do not. But by the very nature of being human, and thus connected to the divine spark, the heartbeat of humanity, to the source of all life and love.
All Saints' Day. The Autumn Triduum, Allhallowtide, doesn't sound very cheerful. We're invited to linger in an uncomfortable place where we pray for the dead and reflect on the impermanence of life. However, embracing it may surprise you.
Even though Halloween is over that’s not stopping WikiFreakz from keeping it spooky! We start off with the most dangerous game of all, Welsh Soccer. Join us as we learn about the FIRST GAME OF THE WALES NATIONAL TEAM. Then it’s off to YUGOSLAVIA which went through a lot of trials and tribulations. One of the most significant being the assassination of the King of Yugoslavia, Alexander by the murderous VLADO CHERNOZEMSKI! Vado was killed and when they buried him his gravestone only had a SKULL AND CROSSBONES. It's a symbol that originated with the DANSE MACABRE or dance of death!

Episode 005: Five Days 'til Allhallowtide01 De Maskers - Death (Netherlands 1967) Dutch beat combo that dabbled in psychedelia in the late 60's, De Maskers bring an over the top sense of drama for their eerie ode to death. They would continue on releasing singles until calling it quits at the dawn of the 70's.02 Jason Crest - Black Mass (UK 1967) Speaking of over the top, even in a genre hell bent on effects and experiments, this song stands out as one of the most truly demented of its time. With a completely backwards backing track and shrieking witch-like vocals, this otherwise cheerful pop quintet from the UK do their best to summon the dead on tape. While only active for a year, their singles and demos are revered as some of the finest examples of the UK pop-psych genre.03 Cape Kennedy Construction Co - Armageddon (UK 1969) Has the end of the world ever sounded so beautiful? A one off UK obscurity that paints a bleak yet exquisite picture of our earth's demise, the phased explosions are a particularly delightful part of the kitchen sink.04 Los Gatos - En El Año 2000 (Argentina 1970) One of Argentina's top rock exports, these freaky felines gave their take on the end of time in their native tongue. The organ player's generosity with atmosphere and effects makes this a stand out in their already stellar catalog. 05 Os Mutantes - Ave Lucifer (Brazil 1970) Brazilian's finest mastered the evil tune across their trio of first releases, as evidenced on this gem from their third LP. All of their albums and various solo efforts are well worth investigating. 06 Pookah - Rain on My Grave (US 1970) An outstanding moody number from an American trio that was lucky to have their sole album receive prime major label production courtesy of United Artists. Not much is known is of this mysterious band though they appear to have New York roots.07 Druids of Stonehenge - Six Feet Down (US 1968) The Druids hailed from New York City and added the "of Stonehenge" to their name once moving to the west coast, eager to join the burgeoning psychedelic scene. Their lone 1968 LP for pop-psych label Uni has long been a sought after garage/psych gem. This Doors-esque number is heavy on the downer vibes and represents the headier side of the album.08 Bermuda Jam - Good Trip Lollipop (US 1969) A freakishly twisted mind melter from an otherwise tame outfit, this is the lone standout from their mediocre LP. But what a stand out it is, with hellish sound effects and clanging chains as their backdrop, they manage to pull off a trippy eploito track that still spooks.09 Fifty Foot Hose - Cauldron (US 1968) Not for the faint of heart, these genuinely experimental electronic wizards gave two shits about the pop charts, although a whiff of the Airplane can be heard on a few of their tunes. If a seance was committed to tape, it may sound like this. One of the finest bands to incorporate electronics into their sound, their LP for electronic label Limelight is solid all the way through.
It's almost Halloween, the time of year when the doors between the living world and the spiritual world are open wide. Soon we will observe Allhallowtide, when we remember the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed. It's the perfect time to cozy up to a fire and hear tales of the supernatural. You decide... truth or fiction? In this episode of Confetti Park Storytime, Kathleen Welch shares with us the legend of the Loup Garoup as found in Acadiana French-Canadian, Acadian, and Franco-American folklore. Loup garoups are also knows as rougarou in Louisiana, most famously, as werewolves, are a form of night creature. "The belief is that sinners may be transformed into black bears or dogs, in which shape they wander each night until someone draws blood from them, thereby breaking the curse," says Welch. Listen in for a spooky thrill!
Father and Deacon discuss Allhallowtide, the Triduum of Halloween, All Saints day, and All Souls day as well as the Catholic Response to the secularization of these feasts.
Allhallowtide is a word that describes the three days that begin with Halloween, includes All Saint's Day and concludes with All Soul's Day. But even a cursory consideration of these days will cause one to wonder: what is the difference between all Saints Day and all Soul's Day? This episode defines their unique identities and then shares some stories as examples of each. Note: This episode published a day early so it could be in time for Halloween even though it's focused primarily on Diwali. As time goes on I'm going to continue to try to rush themed episodes to you in time for the appropriate dates but may not always be able to do this. Hey Intimates. I wanted to do a Hallowe'en episode because it’s such a popular holiday and I’ve been challenging myself to create and release special episodes around festivals or holidays. It turned into a Diwali episode because despite being descended from a half Roman Catholic family, I have been far more interested in my Indian heritage recently. This year, I’m celebrating both dates. Before getting into the Indian celebration, I do my best to explain and do justice to Allhallowtide, a three day festival where Hallows Evening or Hallowe'en is just one part on October 31 involving a vigil for the Catholic saints in heaven (hallows is synonymous with saints). Irene joins me today as an Indo Canadian woman who hasn’t lived in India like I have, but who has in my opinion had a far more traditional Indian upbringing as I haven’t. Our different perspectives as parts of the Indian diaspora hopefully offer one incomplete and imperfect portrait of folks grappling with culture and community in a very Canadian way: perhaps slightly distanced from it for likely different reasons, balancing different ideas of what it means to be from a place, and practicing culture as a form of identity. If you want to learn more, feel free to wikipedia Diwali and the Ramayana or throw it into google and check out some of the awesome images of this Indian Festival of Lights. I wish you a Happy Diwali, and many cozy Autumn evenings with family and friends. Enjoy the episode, Intimates. 1. Can you give a brief explanation of what Diwali is about in three sentences or less? 2. Could you explain to folks who don't already know: what is the Ramayana about? [Itihasa] 3. How many days long is Diwali? 4. What sorts of rituals do you take part in over Diwali (do you do any rangoli, pujas to Lakshmi)? 5. Are you aware of any other variations of Diwali rituals that you don't participate in? 6. Who celebrates Diwali with you? 7. Does Diwali build a sense of community for you? 8. Do you relate your experience of Diwali to hope in the context of colder, literally darker days? 9. Do you draw strength in your identity from your culture as an Indian? 10. How does your sense of Indian culture relate to mental wellness in your experience? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allhallowtide https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diwali https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramayana https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindu_calendar

Allhallowtide Part 1 - The Problem with Light Parties
Happy All Hallow Tide! We discuss Halloween, All Saints Day, and All Souls, and how Christians should celebrate(or not!).
Samhain, Halloween, Allhallowtide, Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead), Zhongyuan Festival, All Saints Day, All Souls Day, Pchum Ben, Chuseok, Gaijatra... These are but a few of the festivals that are being celebrated around the world as I write this... It is said across all of them that it is a time when the veil is thin between us and the afterlife... It is a time when we should honour our dead. How and Why is there celebrations across the globe which have such similarities? Is it an echo of a lost memory..? Angus and I sat down after a bit of research and dug into this topic, enjoy.
Halloween is a day Australians either love, or love to hate. But it’s not all spooky scary skeletons, it’s also Allhallowtide – a set of holy days when Catholics venerate saints in heaven and pray for the souls of the dead. The God Forbid panel examines Pagan-Christian cross-pollination, from Samhain to All Saints.
Justina Marsh and Peter Marsh - Halloween or Hallowe'en (a contraction of All Hallows' Evening), also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows' Eve, or All Saints' Eve, is a celebration observed in a number of countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows' Day. It begins the three-day observance of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed. It is widely believed that many Halloween traditions originated from ancient Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain; that such festivals may have had pagan roots; and that Samhain itself was Christianized as Halloween by the early Church. Some believe, however, that Halloween began solely as a Christian holiday, separate from ancient festivals like Samhain. Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (or the related guising), attending Halloween costume parties, carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, divination games, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories and watching horror films. In many parts of the world, the Christian religious observances of All Hallows' Eve, including attending church services and lighting candles on the graves of the dead, remain popular, although elsewhere it is a more commercial and secular celebration. Some Christians historically abstained from meat on All Hallows' Eve, a tradition reflected in the eating of certain vegetarian foods on this vigil day, including apples, potato pancakes, and soul cakes.

Today is All Hallow's Eve--or Halloween for short. In terms of Christianity, this is the day in the liturgical calendar, that begins a three-day remembrance of the dead--a duration of time known as Allhallowtide. On today's "A Classical Day in the Life" we explore the spooky side of classical music.
