The Ultimate Authority // Pastor Mike Lemp
Week 1, we learned that: We must know we are a part of a larger spiritual battle Today, we are looking at an important Biblical theme The theme is LIGHT AND DARKNESS Scripture uses several themes to separate the THINGS OF GOD and the THINGS NOT OF GOD Good and Bad Wisdom and Foolishness Righteous and Unrighteous Another of those themes is LIGHT AND DARKNESS An example of this is… 1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his possession, so that you may proclaim the praises of the one who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. This leads to the questions: What exactly is LIGHT? What exactly is DARKNESS? Let's Start with… Biblical Theology of Light and Dark Genesis 1:1-4 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness. God created light The light was GOOD Darkness represents CHAOS Formless Empty Without purpose So we can say that… God's Creation thrives in the light Psalm 27:1 1 The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom should I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life whom should I dread? A new layer of what light is… Light Represents God and His Salvation Isaiah 9:2 2 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; a light has dawned on those living in the land of darkness. Darkness is a state we can live in Perpetually God's light (SALVATION) pulls us out of Darkness But this is not a physical darkness… Romans 1:21-22 21 For though they knew God, they did not glorify him as God or show gratitude. Instead, their thinking became worthless, and their senseless hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools… This darkness affects our hearts and minds But… John 1 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 All things were created through him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light (Salvation) of men. 5 That light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it. The light of God's Salvation in Jesus overcomes the CHAOS and hard hearts of the World What is this Darkness? Darkness is the fallen state of humanity, the created world, and the kingdom of evil. It started in the Garden of Eden and continues through humankind's rebellion. Darkness refers to falsehood and evil. To live as children of light means to be directed by what is good, right, and true. Symbolizes sin, ignorance, and separation from God This is important because it challenges our modern perception of: GOOD VS BAD God is not some heavenly principle – BAD God is not a sky Santa Clause – GOOD This leads us to say things like… “I think I'm a good person who sometimes does bad things…” “I'm not perfect, but I know my own heart…” “I think as long as you do good things and aren't mean to people, you are a good person…” This isn't what the Bible is trying to say AT ALL Some practical ways to better understand how this darkness affects us Darkness of Understanding Unknowing Ignorance Darkness of Decisions Falsehood Wickedness Bad Choices Chaos Darkness of Separation From God From Life From Salvation Let's better understand what is in the dark… There are Monsters in the Dark There is more to this darkness that scripture speaks about… Colossians 1:13 He has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son he loves. This darkness is a kingdom against God and His creation There is an agency to evil We need to rid our minds of the medieval caricature of Satan. Dispensing with the horns, the hooves and the tail, we are left with the biblical portrait of a spiritual being, highly intelligent, immensely powerful and utterly unscrupulous. ~ John Stott Ephesians 6 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens. What we need to know about Satan and His kingdom of darkness 1: This “kingdom” is structured to wage war against God and his church An organized hierarchy 2: He doesn't just influence people but also nations Idolatry Evil on a large scale The destructive malice of Satan against all humanity, and particularly against the church, is channeled through human agents and the systems and institutions they have built. Humanity in general is afflicted by the destroyer through the structures of injustice and oppression of which the flesh and the devil are joint architects, and Christians are murderously attacked by individuals and governments ultimately directed by Satan. ~ Richard Lovelace Lord's Prayer: Your KINGDOM COME… We wage war on evil to see this happen 3: He would rather you not know he exists Like the mob, works in Darkness C.S. Lewis – Either disbelieve he exists or excessive interest Lastly… 4: He does have SOME authority over this world The temptation of Jesus There is tremendous hope because scripture teaches… The Light of God Is Always Victorious Against Darkness Jesus has ULTIMATE Authority and has defeated satan on the CROSS Our Goal is the WALK IN THE LIGHT Ephesians 5 6 Let no one deceive you with empty arguments, for God's wrath is coming on the disobedient because of these things. 7 Therefore, do not become their partners. 8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light— 9 for the fruit of the light consists of all goodness, righteousness, and truth— 10 testing what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Don't participate in the fruitless works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what is done by them in secret. 13 Everything exposed by the light is made visible, 14 for what makes everything visible is light. Therefore it is said: Get up, sleeper, and rise up from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.
Paul explains how the Bible was inspired and authored by God, thus holding ultimate authority for Christians in our beliefs and how we live our lives.

Text: Ecclesiastes 8 Be Submissive to Earthly Authorities (8:1-9) We must wisely align ourselves under earthly authorities because they are set up by God. Our submission and obedience ultimately rests in God. Fear God as the Ultimate Authority (8:10-13) We must walk in the fear of the Lord despite the evil we experience around us. We know that God is the final authority and judge of all. Look to God's Unfathomable Wisdom (8:14-17) Life can seem unfair and unjust when viewed from our limited perspective. We must submit to God and His unlimited wisdom to make sense of life's challenges.
One of the great rallying cries of the Protestant Reformation was “Scripture Alone,” or if you prefer the Latin, “Sola Scriptura.” The chief opponent for the trust of men at the time wasn't public institutions, academics and scientists, or even directly the state. They fought against the tyranny of Roman Catholicism which claimed ultimate authority to declare truth and speak for God. In the Reformation everyone understood that control over the voice of God was at stake. Either God's Word would be allowed to stand for itself, and correct every other voice, or the Pope would reserve the right to yield God's voice and decree and interpret as he willed. We no longer find ourselves in a society where everyone acknowledges the true God. The dominant god of this society against which we war is the god of the state, with its promises of elevating humanity and solving our every problem. Politicians, academic elites, and experts of every variety all labor to yield the power of whatever god they serve. This episode, Part 7 on God's Word as our ultimate authority, is a part of an ongoing series on Building a Thoroughly Christian Worldview. Everyone has a worldview whether they realize it or not, and more than likely their worldview is not consistent with itself. The Bible is our only standard for all of life and truth. We are called to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). We can only do this by knowing God's Word. Listen in to this multipart series as Caleb and Lindsey discuss what a worldview is, how to evaluate your worldview for inconsistencies, and also ways to apply God's Word and mission to every area of your life. As disciples we are meant to have a "Kingdom Mindset." Many Christians today have more of a defeatist mindset and live defensively instead of offensively. The Christian's worldview directly applies to how Christians engage the culture, and this is what we will be discussing in future episodes during this series. **THIS MONTH'S SPONSOR:** Christian Light Education Read Lindsey's Personal Review of CLE's Horticulture Today High School Elective: https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/teach-valuable-life-skills/ Read Lindsey's Personal Review of CLE's Learning to Read Program: https://reformedfaithandfamily.com/learning-to-read-cle-review/ Visit Christian Light Education's Website: https://christianlight.org/shop-curriculum >> **FREE** Christian Worldview Family Field Guide >> Download Your Copy Now! Look to Jesus - the One Who has Ultimate AuthorityPassage: Mark 4v35-41Speaker: Greg Spencer
Today's Topics: 1) Gospel - Jn 15:9-17 - Jesus said to His disciples: “As the Father loves Me, so I also love you. Remain in My love. If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and remain in His love. “I have told you this so that My joy might be in you and your joy might be complete. This is My commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are My friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from My Father. It was not you who chose Me, but I Who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in My Name He may give you. This I command you: Love one another.” Bishop Strickland and Terry discuss who, exactly, is the ultimate authority in the Church
Psalm 59 Worksheet Psalm 59 is another Trouble and Trust Psalm within the series of 8 complaint Psalms from 52-59. This is the 3rd straight Michtam of David set to the tune “Do not destroy.” David wasn't going to kill Saul even though he had multiple _______________________ to do just that. He was not going to harm the ‘Lord's anointed.' In these unfair circumstances, David took his concerns to God in prayer. What are the repeated verses? First verse: Plea for God to arise and help David ____________________ V. 1-5 What vivid verbs does David use to ask for God's help in verses 1-2? Remember that David was a mighty warrior. He could defend himself and kill Saul. But he is ___________________________ not to act in his own strength because he believes that in this case that would be sin against God. And so he prays. One key to understanding declarations like verses 3-4 in the Psalms is that David is not claiming to be without sin (remember Psalm 51:5), but he is stating his ___________________ in the matter at hand. David really was powerless in this situation because of Saul's incredible authority as king, and all he could do was ask the Ultimate Authority to _____________________. What are the 2 things David asks God to “wake up” and do in verses 4-5? Chorus: David compares his enemies to ____________________ dogs V. 6-7 What do you think David has in mind by saying his attacking enemies are saying, “Who hears?” Verse 2: David's plea for God to ______________________ this matter justly V. 8-13 What earlier Psalm does verse 8 remind us of? Verse 8 reminds us that God will always have the __________________________ word! What are some of the benefits of waiting on the Lord? Verse 11 makes me think of how when Saul did die David mourned greatly for him and wrote a song about it in 2 Samuel 1:17-27 Chorus: David compares his enemies to ____________________ dogs V. 14-15 I get the feeling David is thinking here about how _____________________ Saul's actions are when there are so many Philistines to deal with! David's final ________________________ of trust and praise V. 16-17

“Because Jesus is the Ultimate Authority, He Always Gets the Last Word.” -Mark 1:21-28
“Everyone has an ultimate authority.” Last episode considered the intellectual merits of this claim. In this episode, Dan considers the emotional appeal of this claim and the work that claims like this do within high-control religious contexts. How do claims to ultimate authority provide us with a sense of control over, or assurance about, our lives? And how do they serve the interests of those who would claim to speak on behalf of that “authority”? Check out the episode to find out! “Everyone has an ultimate authority.” You might encounter this claim in a discussion about the authority of the Bible, or in religious debates about LGBTQ+ inclusion, or the respective roles of men and women in church and society, or about evolution, or vaccines, or any number of other topics. But what, exactly, does this mean? Why will people with a particular view of religious authority make this claim? What attitudes or beliefs encoded within it? These issues are the focus of this week's episode. Through this parable, Jesus reveals his identity and authority. The parable centres on a vineyard owner who sends messengers, including his son, to the tenants, symbolising God's relationship with Israel. Jesus emphasises his authority as the cornerstone, challenging us to understand his humble yet key role. As we explore this parable's message, we're prompted to examine our own sources of authority and decide how we respond to Jesus' call in contemporary South East London.

If you've watched the new documentary, Shiny Happy People, then this episode is for you! We talk through the idea of authority and how dangerous it is to teach kids to follow and obey all authority, no matter what. The idea of authority will always increase the risk of abuse. When we think about how we want our kids to react if they're being abused, including kicking, yelling, biting, sayng no, then we have to help them learn how to react similar ways when they're not being abused.I will always back my kids up if they feel like they need to challenge someone in authority over them.Almost all abuse of children is perpetrated by people in authority over them and people they know well. This means kids have to know how to challenge people in authority over them and tell us when something doesn't feel right, no matter who the person is.When our kids aren't allowed to have an opinion or reaction to a directive being given, they will not be able to learn how to discern what is good or appropriate. This skill has to be taught, and that has to start with challenging our authority and directives as parents.Parents are squandering the best tool we have to keep kids safe for the sake of obedience. Kids have the same ability to feel unsafe around certain people. Their feelings or uncertainty can come out in lots of different ways - anger, frustration, withdrawal, not wanting to go somewhere, etc. Our job as parents is to listen to them and help them learn to listen to their system and give them control over themselves in those situations. When it comes to things kids can't communicate clearly, we need to trust their systems and believe they know what is best for them in those moments.I regularly think about not disrespecting my kids, just like I don't want them to disrespect me. Parents would die to keep kids safe; but would you let them tell you 'no'?Subscribe, rate, and review us on Podchaser, Apple, or wherever you listen to podcasts!Follow us on social media to join the conversation!!!FacebookInstagram

From navigating ‘gotcha' questions about heaven to responding to the false presuppositions of critics, from exposing the dangers of hypocrisy to highlighting the kind of giving that truly honors God, Jesus leaves no stone unturned in this power-packed passage of scripture.
Jesus was no pushover. Neither was He afraid of getting ‘political.' Many people believe that ‘separation of church & state' is a modern concept. Pastor Josh clarifies in this sermon that it was Jesus who set this idea in motion. Be encouraged, Christians—Jesus is Lord over all things, including politics.
This week we'll be studying Mark 1:21-28 under the theme of "Jesus' Medicinal Teaching." In this text, Jesus preaches in a synagogue, revealing his authority, and then demonstrates his authority over a man possessed by a demon. This reveals the truth that Jesus is the ULTIMATE Authority over the physical & spiritual realm. But it also raises interesting questions about what level of authority Jesus plays in our lives. For that matter, are demons active the same way today? Do they affect our health? Do they show up in churches as they did here, and if so, what does it look like? What type of health would we experience if we were willing to fully submit to the authority of Jesus?
