Twenty-five years after the attacks of September 11, 2001, Michael Tolson joins us to share his firsthand experience of that day. Michael, now the owner and chef of Chow at 118, was living and working in New York City at the time. Had he not been running late for work that morning, he could have been exiting the subway at the World Trade Center as the attacks began. Instead, from less than a mile away, he witnessed the second plane strike the South Tower. In this episode, Michael reflects on what he saw, the confusion and fear of that morning, and the grief that settled over New York City in the days that followed. He also shares how the attacks affected daily life and permanently changed the mood of the city he called home. As we mark 25 years since September 11, we're honored to help preserve and share Michael's story.

When two great minds come together, the results will be even greater. This is the case for Antonio Tolson and Dr. Tonya Arnold.  The pair has teamed up to raise awareness about autism and educate others about what the condition is all about, and how it affects families.          Antonio is a native of Washington, DC.  He moved to Charlotte, NC, in 2013, and would eventually marry the love of his life, Tonya.  Together, they share one son, AJ, who was diagnosed with autism in 2019.  "It all started with a lady from the AVA Clinic. She told us that our son has autism, good luck, and then walked out of our home," he says.  Antonio shares that moment left him and his wife speechless, but he realized that he needed to do something about his son's diagnosis.         In response to his son's diagnosis, they launched a nonprofit organization, AJ and The Cool Kids.  Some of the services provided by their organization include Occupational and Speech Therapy to their clients. They also conduct an annual walk at the Caramont Health Center in Gastonia, NC, during the first week of April.  They also conduct an annual gala during the first week of August.  "We try to give other families as much support as possible and let them know that life isn't over just because their child has autism."        Dr. Tonya Arnold is originally from Greensboro, NC.  She attended North Carolina A&T State University and later transferred to Winston-Salem State University. There, she was commissioned into the US Army as a Second Lieutenant, serving for a total of 22 years.  She retired in 2015 and moved to Charlotte, which allowed her to be closer to her mother's side of her family, and also experience what it's like to live in a big city.  In Charlotte, she began working on her Masters in Public Administration.  She says, "Since being in Charlotte, when compared to living in Greensboro, and being active in various community service-based organizations, including working with small businesses and being in the military, I've noticed that our nonprofit doesn't get the necessary amount of funding and equity that most other businesses receive. I believe a lot of it is due to what has been coined "the hustle".  What I am trying to do with businesses and nonprofits, for-profits, and community-based organizations, is to make sure that they are legitimate, operationally sound, and are in compliance on the federal, local, and state levels."  Additionally, in her capacity, she initially began working as a consultant from a pro-bono perspective. Dr. Arnold has worked with sororities and with the Ben L. Smith High School Alumni Association in Greensboro. She is also a member of the Cobra Sports Foundation.  "In these roles, I have been able to understand processes," she says.  She also has a media and publishing arm with her brand.  With this, she gives opportunities to others to share their stories, which are relevant to them; their history and struggles told from their perspective.            Amazingly, with all that she has done, Dr. Arnold created a consulting business, Arnold Consulting Group.  She says that Antonio has greatly inspired her.  "Antonio and Tonya have allowed me to work with AJ and The Cool Kids for nearly four years.  He soon shared some visions he had with me.  I listened and asked him if he ever thought about writing a book.  He was open to the idea, and we met a few times to discuss the structure of what the book would be, until the idea became a reality," she says.        The book, A Father's Voice, Raising A Son with Autism, is about Antonio's son, AJ, but it also reaches fathers who have children with different disabilities and disorders.  A soft launch was held in March of this year. During that event, Antonio shared what the vision and intentions are for the book, and he also realized that a workbook should accompany it.              Since publishing his book, Antonio's schedule has become very busy.  He has been interviewed and made appearances on several television stations in Charlotte.  He has been a guest on a podcast and is scheduled for a few others. During the month of July, he will attend an Autism Dad Weekend event in Atlanta, GA.  On August 8th, they will host their annual gala and most significant fundraising event, themed Under The Cherry Moon.  It will be held at Caramont Health Park in Gastonia, NC.  In September, he's been asked to speak at The Autism Strong event, called Field Strong that will take place in Charlotte.          "Things are moving.  I am a person who puts high expectations on myself.  I do not like to do things halfway.  I can't thank Dr. Arnold enough for pushing me to write the book.  I always wanted the book to mean something to me, and not just for the sake of being an author.  I have learned since writing the book that there are a lot of men and fathers who feel like me, but just didn't know how to express themselves," Antonio says.        To purchase a copy of A Father's Voice, Raising A Son with Autism, please contact Antonio directly.  You may also find it on Amazon and Kindle.  To purchase tickets to attend their gala and to learn more about AJ and The Cool Kids, please visit their website.   www.ajandthecoolkids.org   www.huamimagazine.com

The dude doesn't even own a car. Takes yellow taxis everywhere because he'd rather spend quality time with his family than lose hours driving. We went deep on authenticity versus fake flexing. You know those coaches posting selfies in front of Lamborghinis they don't own? Daniel's the complete opposite. When he started coaching he could only afford to catch the bus. All his money went into educating himself. Retooling like any good builder would. And he was honest about it with his clients. Drove his mom's car and didn't hide it. I was a slow learner. I had a curved spine. My hips were out of alignment. I couldn't run. My knees would collapse when I was running. This physical defect created pressure in my head, I was losing my vision. I couldn't think properly. I was in so much pain physically. In the end, my body collapsed under this tremendous stress, I developed chronic fatigue syndrome and contracted Epstein Barr virus and I had to drop out of school. When I recovered my uncle took me under his wing and showed me the blueprint of how to become the top 10% in real estate. I took that blueprint, overcompensated with actions, became the top 1% performer, and bought my first home at the age of 19. But I dreamt of becoming an Australian champion wakeboarder. So, I gave up the real estate career to pursue my dream. I had a lot of challenges. To overcome the fear and achieve my goal, I spent a lot of time and energy on personal development, learning how to systematically and methodically break barriers to achieve goals. Eventually, I became the Australian Wakeboarder Champion, not once, but three times. That experience of creating my breakthrough and sustaining it set me up for a series of career highs, such as co-leading 17000 cabin crews, launching my own business, and building a global business that impacts more than 15,000 business people 100X their life and income. I'm sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way? In 2010, at the peak of my career, my wife was involved in an aircraft accident. It left her with some disabilities requiring multiple surgeries over the next 2.5 years. Eventually, she lost her job and was forced to leave the country. I left the job to join her back home to take care of her. But 10 months and 500 job applications later, I was jobless. We were living with my grandmother, depending on Australian social security payments. It was the lowest point of my life. I was desperate. And I knew if I want to be a man who provides for my family, things must change. I pulled myself together, used every tool and technology I have in my toolbox, got clarity on life, and launched my coaching business from my grandmother's spare bedroom. I wish I could say life was happy ever after. But no, success never comes on the first attempt. Richard Branson launched 400 companies before founding Virgin galactic. Steven Spielberg was rejected by Film School 3 times. I was betrayed by a business partner. I had to move countries several times. I was broke three times in 3 different countries and had to start all over again. These experiences have become the foundation of my 100XDNA. It has 100X-ed my life.

He was one of the top prep basketball players in the state of Missouri in his junior and senior years at Central High School in Kansas City. So, when the colleges came running, he accepted a full ride to the University of Arkansas. Despite being unable to read or write, he went on to be one of the most prolific players to grace the Razorbacks' campus. In 1974, Tolson was the first basketball player to be drafted by both the NBA and the ABA, having been selected by the Seattle Supersonics and the New York Nets, respectively, playing for the legendary Bill Russell in Seattle. Following his basketball career, Tolson made the courageous decision to re-enroll at the University of Arkansas, and repeated all four years, this time legitimately. At the age of fifty-two, he returned to the university for three more years, earning a master's degree and graduated magna cum laude. Andy has a wife, Kristen, and his six children, four daughters and two sons, ranging in age from 28 to 13. He also has two bird dogs, Rainy, a French Brittany, and Aki, a golden retriever. During the late 1960s, Dean Tolson ("Power Forward: My Journey from Illiterate NBA Player to a Magna Cum Laude Master's Degree") emerged as a standout prep basketball talent during his junior and senior years at Central High School in Kansas City, Missouri. His prowess on the court attracted the attention of a bevy of college recruiters, leading him to accept a full scholarship offer from the nearby University of Arkansas. Despite literally not knowing how to read or write, Tolson defied significant odds, and became one of the most renowned players in Razorbacks history. In 1974, Tolson was drafted by both the NBA's Seattle Supersonics and the ABA's New York Nets - eventually joining the Sonics to play under the tutelage of the legendary Bill Russell in Seattle, and showcasing his talent on a national stage.  An 11-year journeyman career followed, with stops in the Eastern Basketball Association (Hazleton Bullets), the CBA (including a 1980 league championship with the Anchorage Northern Knights), and pro leagues in both Greece and the Philippines. After retiring from basketball, Tolson made the courageous decision to re-enroll at the University of Arkansas, determined to pursue his education authentically - repeating all four years of college and finally obtaining his degree through legitimate means. Remarkably, he returned to the university once again at age 52, earning a master's degree with magna cum laude honors. Tolson's journey, from his challenging upbringing in an orphanage to his remarkable academic achievements, serves as a powerful indictment of a system that often prioritizes athletic talent over educational accountability. His story sheds light on the pervasive issue of athletes being "passed along" without facing the academic rigor expected of their peers. Dean Tolson was an unbelievably talented athlete. The man could jump out of the gym, and couldn't be stopped on the basketball court. He came from a poverty stricken area, and his mother who worked tirelessly to help the kids, had to make some very difficult decisions in her life when Dean and his siblings were younger. (You'll hear this in the interview) All of this helped build him into the man he became. The one problem with his recruiting process, were his grades!  Dean struggled in school. And we'll hear about his college experience on how he was able to remain academically eligible to play in College until he was drafted in the NBA. Dean was truly illiterate and struggled to read and write. This came back to hinder him as he got older. We'll hear about his NBA experience and what it was like playing at that level, and the differences between the NBA then and the NBA now. What was it like playing for Bill Russell who drafted Dean to the Seattle Supersonics? We get to hear all the stories today.  Upon finishing his basketball career, Dean made a choice (thanks to his mother) to go back to college and actually take it seriously this time. He realized he needed an education and that he wouldn't make it far without one.  Not only did Dean end up going back and having success, he ended up getting his Masters Degree and graduating Magna Cum Laude!!  Now the best part about all of it is, Dean has written a book about his journey and all that he has overcome!
