We are experiencing a youth mental health crisis. Young people worldwide are increasingly struggling to manage the escalating stress and complications of everyday life. In 2021, 42% of high school students reported feeling so sad or hopeless for two consecutive weeks that they would stop engaging in their usual activities, up from 26% in 2009. Is there a way to eliminate the stigma around mental health and make kindness cool? We spoke to Claudia-Santi F. Fernandes, Ed.D., LPC, MCHES, and Rahul Rangan, MBBS of Born This Way Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, about the ways peer-to-peer support can benefit today's youth, the vital mental health resources needed in schools, and the impact of Born This Way Foundation's Be There Certificate and their Channel Kindness program on building a kinder and braver world.

Dr. Claudia-Santi F. Fernandes is Born This Way Foundation's Director of Research and Evaluation. Dr. Fernandes spearheads the Foundation's research strategy, providing scientific expertise in the design and implementation of youth-led initiatives and impactful programming. Dr. Fernandes also holds a faculty appointment as an assistant clinical professor of the Child Study Center and in Biomedical Informatics and Data Science at the Yale School of Medicine. Mina Fazel is Professor of Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Oxford. Her journey into the field of child and adolescent psychiatry was driven by her interest in understanding the impact of environmental factors on mental health. Since 2019, her team has been running the OxWell Student Survey, with over 40,000 children taking part in the 2023 version of the survey, it provides invaluable information for tailoring mental health provision to meet individual needs. In this episode, they discuss some of Born This Way Foundation's activities, including the Be There Certificate and #BeKind365, how school-based interventions can help improve the mental health of young people, and the importance of kindness.

After working for years as a telecommunications executive, she co-founded the Born This Way Foundation with her famous daughter, Lady Gaga, where she is currently serving as President. The Born This Way Foundation seeks to build a kinder, braver world. They support teenagers struggling with their mental health journey by conducting research, funding mental health-focused projects in the classroom, organizing service events, and many other projects. Cynthia Germanotta is the World Health Organization's Goodwill Ambassador for Mental Health. She's also Lady Gaga's Mother. She and her daughter co-founded Born This Way Foundation to support adolescent mental health. Her passion is to empowering young people to build a kinder, braver world. Born This Way Foundation Under Cynthia's leadership, Born This Way Foundation has reached hundreds of thousands of young people across the country and around the world, launched innovative youth-focused programming such as teen Mental Health First Aid, and conducted cutting-edge research to improve the understanding of mental wellness and the impact of kindness. Cynthia and Born This Way Foundation have been the recipient of numerous honors including the 2019 Behavior Research Foundation's Honorary Pardes Humanitarian Prize in Mental Health for their advocacy work surrounding mental health, the 2018 Children Mending Heart's Global Changemaker's Award for their commitment to positive change through empathy, and the National Association of School Psychologists Special Friend to Children Award. In May 2019, the United Nations' World Health Organization (WHO) appointed Cynthia as a WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Mental Health. In this role, she promotes healthy living, works to eliminate the mental health stigma, and advocates for mental health awareness on a global scale. Cynthia is an alumni member of the Board of Governors for the Parsons New School of Design. Cynthia is a former telecommunications executive whose career in sales & management spanned 25 years. A graduate of West Virginia University, she earned her master's degree in public administration from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., which she considers invaluable to her work with the foundation. Born and raised in West Virginia, Cynthia now resides in New York City with her husband, Joe Germanotta. Joe and Cynthia have two wonderful daughters, Natali and Stefani, and are owners of a charming NYC neighborhood restaurant, Joanne Trattoria.
