For several decades, Ray Hartmann was a regular on the Nine Network's Donnybrook where he often clashed with other St. Louis journalists about a litany of local issues. He also started the Riverfront Times, which regularly took a contrarian view about politics and culture in the St. Louis region. But earlier this year, Hartmann announced he was leaving the journalism world to take on U.S. Rep. Ann Wagner, R-Ballwin. And on an episode of the Politically Speaking podcast, Hartmann made the case that he would be a more present and effective legislator for the 2nd Congressional District, which includes a large swath of the St. Louis region. “Our politics are broken and Congress is broken,” Hartmann said. “And I've been in the public eye for a long time, and I just felt this was the time to step up.”

The group, led the efforts to bring attention to what they refer to as the “atrocious mismanagement” of the North City Small Business & Non-Profit Grant Program, led by SLDC. ------ Ron Himes, founder director of our world renowned, St. Louis Black Repertory Company, rounded off two hours of informative, entertaining and interesting conversations on the 175th episode of the Kdhx podcast Tangazo. ------ Himes, is entering his 48th year, as director of the black communities, most venerable and prestigious cultural institution. ----- The theater group, is hosting its annual fall fundraiser at CASA, scheduled for November 9th, featuring the Golden Voices Choir, of Spellman College. On this episode of the show, Missouri Politico and state news man John Combest joins to discuss Missouri Politics and National politics. First up, it's a sad day in St. Louis as their hometown entertainment paper called The Riverfront Times has been sold and people were laid off. It's not good that people lost their Jobs, but our host Mark has had a long and interesting relationship with that newspaper and he discusses some of those thoughts and feelings right off the bat. Next up John Combest is a multi-talented individual, but he cut his teeth in the early days of the internet creating a Missouri version of the Drudge Report. It became wildly successful, but along with that also came some bad things. This lead to John writing a book about Stalking and how to deal with it. John is the author of: Stalking, Harassment, Internet Trolling: A Guide to Recovering and Rebuilding After Online Attacks. Mark and Jason discuss why he wrote the book and some of the things people need to factor into their dealings with people that stalk them. And finally, The guys get a chance to talk about some national politics. Trump is in the news for a bevy of things, but Mark straight asks John if he is going to vote for Trump in the November election. John answers honestly and this leads to a very good discussion about viewing Trump from the conservative mindset moving forward in 2024. All this and he does THE HOT SEAT! Check it out and share it with a friend!

The Riverfront Times has been sold to an undisclosed buyer and on Wednesday its entire news staff was laid off. St. Louis' alt-weekly held a unique position in local journalism for 46 years. In its early years, it was known for its free (and at times) raunchy personal ads. Over the years, the paper became known for its stories on the city's arts and culture, irreverent headlines and serious journalism. Former RFT Executive Editor Sarah Fenske and paper founder Ray Hartmann discuss the RFT's sale and its legacy.

Brenden Schaeffer discusses the recent Riverfront Times article that reported that the Cardinals plan to request public funding in the neighborhood of $500 to $600 million for renovations to Busch Stadium. What exactly are the renovations needed? What is the timeline for this potential project? And comparing it to recent examples across sports, how do we expect the public to react to this request if it ever comes time to vote on it? Although this report is merely the signal of a very preliminary stage of the process, it does seem that the Cardinals could come knocking on the door of the public in the next two to five years asking for funding to upgrade this 18-year-old stadium. The Jazz St. Louis Board of Directors is coming to the defense of its president and CEO, Victor Goines. A story in the Riverfront Times last week detailed issues that some Jazz St. Louis staff and supporters have had with the organization's new leader including alleged bullying. Public scrutiny of Goines' leadership started after St. Louis artist Cbabi Bayoc posted on Instagram an account of how Goines' passed on his T-shirt design that was to be used as part of a Young Friends board fundraiser.
As one of the world's best-selling musicians, Lady Gaga has set the musical bar high. Since her debut album, The Fame (2008), she has sold more than 124 million records and scooped numerous awards, including twelve Grammy Awards and eighteen MTV Music Video Awards. Yet she is much more than a musician. At the helm of the Haus of Gaga--a close-knit circle of behind-the-scenes creatives--Lady Gaga is a performance artist like no other; her forward-thinking fashions and innovations mark her out as the ultimate maverick. Recently, she has reinvented herself as an accomplished jazz performer, dueting with legendary singer Tony Bennett on Cheek to Cheek (2014) and Love For Sale (2021), while also proving herself a consummate actor with lead roles in A Star Is Born (2018) and House of Gucci (2021). And with her advocacy for LGBT rights and active championing of kindness via the Born This Way Foundation, co-founded with her mother Cynthia Germanotta in 2011, it's clear to see why her fans adore her. Lady Gaga: Applause (Palazzo Editions, 2022) is a celebration of a true artist of our time. Illustrated throughout with stunning photography and complementary fashion segments, this comprehensive history follows Lady Gaga's ever-evolving and often unpredictable career, and is testament to her many talents. A must for Little Monsters everywhere. Annie Zaleski is an award-winning freelance, journalist, editor, and critic based in Cleveland, Ohio. Previously, she was on staff at the Riverfront Times and Alternative Press. Her profiles, interviews, and criticism have appeared in publications such as Rolling Stone, NPR Music, The Guardian, Salon, Time, Billboard, The A.V. Club, Vulture, The Los Angeles Times, Stereogum, Cleveland Plain Dealer, and Las Vegas Weekly. She is the author Duran Duran's Rio (Bloomsbury). Annie on Twitter. Making insightful observations is a key component of being a good scientist, or journalist, or filmmaker. Come to think of it, many careers rely on the ability to notice the details. In this week's episode, both of our storytellers are keen observers of human and animal nature. Part 1: Documentary filmmaker Caitlin Starowicz is so focused on making her movie about endangered Mountain Gorillas a success that she fails to see what's in front of her. Part 2: For a story on escape rooms, journalist Danny Wicentowski studies the trials, triumphs, and strategies of the players. Caitlin Starowicz is a director/producer for film and television. Her work focuses on the climate crisis, animal rights, women in STEM, and intersectional feminism. Her films have twice nominated for Best Documentary in Canada at the Canadian Screen Awards, and once for Best Documentary Director in Canada. Danny Wicentowski is a journalist and storyteller in St. Louis. Now a producer at St. Louis Public Radio, Danny worked for more than eight years as a staff writer and investigative reporter for St. Louis' alt-weekly the Riverfront Times. In 2020, he co-produced and hosted the podcast American Skyjacker, chronicling the life and crimes of plane hijacker Martin McNally. Danny lives in Bevo Mill with a black cat and many notebooks. Nearly one-third of Hazelwood School District students have been assigned to in-person classes where the teacher is virtual, instructing from hundreds or thousands of miles away. A new Riverfront Times story highlights how the arrangement is failing students. Reporter Mike Fitzgerald and Tamar Brown, education advocacy director for A Red Circle, discuss how the national teacher shortage has led to this point and what happens next for students and families in the district.
Missouri has killed 93 men since 1976. Amber McLaughlin, a convicted murderer, could be its first woman. But Amber's story goes deeper than her crime. Jessica Hicklin met Amber while both were incarcerated. In 2018, Jessica won a landmark transgender-rights case in a lawsuit against the Missouri Department of Corrections, allowing her and other trans inmates, like Amber, access to hormone therapy. Jessica Hicklin discuses her friendship with Amber, and why she's asking Gov. Mike Parson to grant her clemency. Riverfront Times staff writer Ryan Krull discuses Amber McLaughlin's crimes, and how her case fits into the larger pattern of Missouri executions.
Edward Goodwin went missing in June 2015. For more than two years, his family didn't know what happened to their son. Eventually witnesses say Goodwin had been beaten to death, his body dumped into a pond. The sheriff's department partially drained the pond and found human hip bones, a femur bone, and some ribs. Edward Goodwin's body had been found, but the rest of his body was never recovered. This, despite assurances from law enforcement that the recovery would happen. After waiting for authorities to act, Connie Goodwin, Edward's mom, took it upon herself to get her son back. The Goodwins rented a sump pump to drain the pond themselves. As they started pumping the water out, bones could be seen sticking up through the water. The coroner was called and Edward Goodwin came home.
