This week I'm chatting with Filmmaker, Trainer, and Domestic Engineer, Cynthia Martinez. During the pandemic Cynthia was moved to capture and illuminate the stories on first generation high school students navigating the road to college while also being locked down.  From her own upbringing, she knew that the road to college for many is much harder without a network and resources. In our conversation we cover what her experience was like, the similarities in our high school years, and a sneak peak at the moving stories she is telling with her film. 

“It’s hard for me to be back here in a lot of ways. Because it sometimes brings me back to being that little Cynthia, and feeling like my voice doesn’t matter because of the color of my skin or my hair. Like people don’t care about what I have to say. And that’s why this film is so important to me. I want these kids to be heard. I want them to know that they do matter.” Cynthia Martinez is a 12-time marathoner and four-time Boston Marathon qualifier who has run races on four continents, completed 16 international races, and won races in Thailand and Dubai. She's a mom, a journalist (she earned her Master's degree from Columbia), and a filmmaker. And right now, Cynthia is producing a film inspired by her own life experiences and her pursuit of higher education. First Voice Generation follows six first-generation Latinx college students, and documents how they are overcoming the challenges of a global pandemic while pursuing their own collegiate careers. On this episode, Cynthia reflects (powerfully; have tissues nearby) on her own childhood as the granddaughter of Mexican migrant farm workers and hard-working parents who worked multiple jobs, and talks about the struggles her family faced. She talks about abuse and alcoholism in her home growing up, and talks about how she is rebuilding her relationships with her parents now, as a mother herself. She talks about the jobs that led her to becoming a filmmaker — including nannying for the 1% in New York City and working at Univision — and explains the role running has played along the way. Cynthia Martinez es la invitada del episodio 143 de Acaba y Emprende, nuevamente recibimos a Cynthia quien es una estratega y autora del libro “No te pasó por pen%*#@” la cual fue entrevistada en el episodio 32 de Acaba y Emprende.   Desde la última entrevista Cynthia fundó el e-commerce “LeadUpLabs” el cual se especializa en cursos para mejorar la productividad, contando con un total de 16 cursos en línea, el cual ha logrado un alcance de hasta a 19 países.   Su éxito más reciente es su libro “No te pasó por pen%*#@” el cual ha llegado a ser el #9 en best Seller en Amazon a pocas horas de su lanzamiento.   Cynthya nos comenta de donde surgió la necesidad de crear su libro, la cual viene de la constante justificación que le presentaban clientes (mayormente starters, vicepresidentes o presidentes de compañia), los cuales contrataban sus servicios de asesoría y ella al señalarle sus errores le respondían “ah, eso me pasa por pendejo”. Por lo que, su libro se ve enfocado en enseñar a aceptar las consecuencias de nuestros actos para llegar a vivir sin excusas.   Nos dice que el libro está dirigido a personas que sienten que “pisan y no arrancan”, personas que en lugar de aspirar a ser alguien, se comparan con otras para dirigir sus acciones.   Entonces, hay que entender que las cosas no te pasan por pendejo, solo no que aceptamos responsabilidades ni admitimos que no analizamos los riesgos que tomamos. Hay que entender que en situaciones de fracaso no es que las personas nos traicionen o porque seamos muy ingenuos. Sino que hay que tomar conciencia de que no fuimos lo suficientemente precavidos para analizar los posibles desenlaces de acciones que tomamos.   De aquí en adelante la charla se ve enteramente ligada a capítulos de su libro y la enseñanza que quieren transmitir.   Nos menciona el capítulo 8: “Una tortura llamada ego”, en donde se explica que perdemos energía comparándonos con otros. Esto sucede en especial en las redes sociales, y de cómo debemos desprendernos de esas falsas imágenes que queremos proyectar a los demás, ya que las mismas terminan acarreando presión que no necesitamos para seguir adelante.   El siguiente capitulo a mencionar es “Fantasilandia”, donde nos explica que se percató de que, al momento de iniciar un nuevo proyecto, siempre se presentaba un cierto fenómeno. Que todos te querrán dar consejos, pero que nadie se dedica a la misma industria que tú. Por lo que hay que ver de quien viene la crítica, ¿si se trata de alguien a quien admiras o no?, sino, hay que hacer caso omiso a las mismas.   Al aceptar criticas de todos los que te rodean, lo que haces es bajar tu barra de expectativas a las exigencias de todos. Recalcamos que hay que aceptar críticas, consejos o sugerencias solo de personas iguales a ti o que admires.   Hay que tener cuidado de las críticas, en especial si son cosas que no puedes defender con tu trabajo, tu contenido o tu trayectoria. Es por esto que Cynthia nos cuenta que, al momento de comenzar su carrera de estratega, la crítica que más recibía era qué, al momento de dar sus charlas sonaba como si estuviera regañando. ¿Qué hizo ante esta crítica errada? Cynthia entendió que esa crítica se basaba únicamente en la percepción de los demás, por lo que, apoyada en su trayectoria, comenzó a advertir al comienzo de sus charlas sobre esa posible percepción que pudieran tener de ella, es decir, defendió su pasión con su trabajo.   Proseguimos hablando del capítulo “Felicidad tóxica”, ¿Qué entendemos por felicidad tóxica?, No es más que ese positivismo ciego ante cualquier circunstancia. Debemos ser positivo-realistas, es decir, hay que combatir tanto la negatividad como el positivismo ciego, estando bien claros en la realidad, asumiéndola e imaginarnos el mejor resultado posible con los datos que poseamos. No dejarnos llevar por emociones ni metas irreales ya que eres la suma total de tus decisiones.   Se expande el tema en su libro, donde hay 10 estrategias para tomar acción en tu vida y vivir sin excusas, donde aprenderás como poder tomar decisiones sin tener que tomar como base las prioridades de otros.   Acaba y Emprende es una iniciativa creada por Tuko Alberto, experto y educador del mercadeo en redes sociales, considerado un representante del mercadeo en Puerto Rico.
