In this episode, I share the unfiltered story of my brief and challenging experience living in Tanzania in 2018. You can't control everything but you can control your response and your actions. The breaking point – The moment I knew it was time to leave and how I navigated the emotional side of the move.Key lessons learned – The importance of destination research, accountability in planning, and the importance of knowing when to leave.Want to explore our Freedom Life Programs?Hop on a call with Violet to explore our Freedom Life coaching programs. Let's clear up a big misconception—not everyone who moves abroad hates their home country. You can absolutely love your country, be frustrated by it, and still want to fix the things you don't like. And guess what? You can do all that while living overseas. In this episode, we'll explore the concept of running towards something you desire, instead of just running away from what you don't. It's all about focusing on what you want in life and designing your dream lifestyle abroad. Plus, I'll address that common line, "If you don't like it, leave," and explain why critiquing your country is actually a form of patriotism and a push for change.Living abroad doesn't mean abandoning your roots. You can still be politically active and advocate for change from anywhere in the world. We'll also touch on the privileges and opportunities that come with being from the US, and how these can coexist with your desire to experience life abroad.Tune in to hear more about how you can love your home country, live abroad, and advocate for change all at the same time. In this episode, I dive deep into a pretty scary experience I had at a grocery store on my most recent visit to the US and use it as a springboard to talk about the bigger issue of gun violence and safety here compared to living abroad. It's a heavy topic, but one that's so important, especially given how often mass shootings and gun-related incidents seem to happen in the US.I share more personal stories of feeling unsafe in the US and contrast that with my experiences in other countries where safety isn't such a major concern. From the stark differences in everyday safety and vigilance to the challenges of dealing with culture shock and reverse culture shock, we cover a lot of ground. Plus, I chat about everything from how the food here affects my body, to work culture and political tensions in the USA and compare it to my experience living overseas.
