DC lawmakers and pro footballers team up to support soccer in tenth Congressional game

Democrats and Republicans from Congress teamed up with professional footballers to raise money for youth soccer programs during the tenth edition of the Congressional Soccer Match. The game of red versus blue was the headline act for the U.S. Soccer Federation event at Audi Field in the nation's capitol on May 8. Rep. Darin LaHood, a Republican lawmaker from Illinois who also co-chairs the Congressional Soccer Caucus, said the organization helps build soccer pitches in underserved communities throughout the country to make the sport more accessible to young players. "Soccer is the number one growing sport in the United States right now," said LaHood. "We've got COPA coming this summer. We've got the World Cup coming in 2026." Adolph Joseph DeLaGarza, who played 14 years in Major League Soccer, participated on the Republican squad and shared a more realistic outlook on the growth of the sport he loves. "We're not there yet on that global level. Our stadiums are not the size of NFL stadiums. But at the same time, when I joined the league in 2009 to now, it's a huge difference," DeLaGarza told the AP. "The way the fans get to experience things from the way the players are paid and ultimately the product on the field is the biggest difference," he added. The fundraiser started with a tournament between staff from twelve embassies, the European Union, and the U.S. State Department. The Embassy of Chile took home the trophy. A team of lobbyists also defended their title in a rematch against Congressional staff. The Democratic and Republican teams were all tied up during half with one goal a piece, but then the GOP retook the lead in the second half and kept extending it to win the match 4 to 3. Dwayne De Rosario, a former professional soccer player from Canada, earned a hat trick for the Democrats to keep the game close and had two other miraculous shots on goal that barely missed the mark. Mother and her 14-year-old son killed in Gwinnett crash that also claimed the life of motorcyclist New Pickle and Social Eatertainment Complex Opens at The Exchange at Gwinnett Former Gwinnett Daily Post staffer pens novel — 'Secrets of Ash' — inspired by his experiences as a reporter All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: MOG STORY 1: Mother and her 14-year-old son killed in Gwinnett crash that also claimed the life of motorcyclist In a tragic crash in unincorporated Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County, three individuals, including a 14-year-old boy and his mother, lost their lives along with a motorcyclist. The collision involved a silver Kia Sorento and a white Yamaha motorcycle. The preliminary investigation suggests that the Kia, driven by a 37-year-old Loganville mother, was turning left onto Scenic Pines Drive, colliding with the southbound motorcycle. The mother, her 14-year-old son, and the 27-year-old motorcyclist from Snellville all succumbed to their injuries. A 9-year-old boy from the Kia was hospitalized. The investigation is examining speed as a potential contributing factor to determine the at-fault driver. STORY 2: Ready for some Pickleball? Pickle and Social, an "eatertainment" complex, recently opened at The Exchange @ Gwinnett, reflecting the rising popularity of Pickleball. The 4.5-acre venue features 16 Pickleball courts along with a full-service restaurant, bar, rooftop bar, pet-friendly outdoor lawn, Biergarten, music stage, and ACL cornhole yard. The complex offers an array of activities, including complimentary indoor and outdoor games, making it a versatile destination. While Pickle and Social provides a range of entertainment, it remains at its core a Pickleball establishment, offering court rentals on a first-come, first-served basis, lessons, clinics, camps, leagues, and tournaments. Membership options are also available. STORY 3: Former Gwinnett Daily Post staffer pens novel — 'Secrets of Ash' — inspired by his experiences as a reporter Josh Green, a former reporter for the Gwinnett Daily Post, drew inspiration from his experiences for his debut novel, "Secrets of Ash." The story revolves around two brothers, a Purple Heart war veteran, and a radio personality, exploring the complexities of their relationship. The character inspired by military veterans aims to convey their experiences and sacrifices, while the radio host character is influenced by Green's time listening to sports radio during his commute. The launch party for "Secrets of Ash" was held in December, marking Green's return to fiction after a decade. He has written two other novels during this period, anticipating their release. The Federal Rail Administration has awarded $1.5 million in grants to explore connecting Atlanta with Savannah, Charlotte, NC, and Chattanooga, TN. These grants are part of the $8.2 billion in new funding for passenger rail projects. The Atlanta-to-Savannah route, championed by U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff, would include potential stops in Athens, Augusta, and Macon. The envisioned high-speed rail project has the potential to enhance mobility and quality of life for Georgians, according to Ossoff. STORY 5: Fayette County lands U.S. Soccer training center The U.S. Soccer Federation has selected Fayette County, Georgia, as the location for a first-of-its-kind national training center (NTC). The $228 million investment will create 440 jobs. U.S. Soccer announced plans in September to move its headquarters from Chicago to Atlanta and establish the first NTC in the metro area. The facility will serve as the national center for training and competition for all 27 U.S. Soccer men's, women's, youth, and extended national teams. The Arthur M. Blank Foundation is contributing $50 million to the project, and the NTC is expected to support and inspire players nationwide. We'll be back in a moment Break 3:  ESOG - INGLES 4 – JACKSON EMC STORY 6: Anti-abortion attorneys ascend federal government ranks with Christian right legal training The Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a conservative Christian nonprofit law firm, has played a significant role in advancing anti-abortion and conservative Christian agendas in the legal realm. The ADF has successfully argued cases before the Supreme Court, including the recent Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which overturned Roe v. Wade. The organization has been involved in training thousands of conservative Christian attorneys through programs like the Legal Academy, Allied Attorney program, and Young Lawyers Academy. ADF's influence extends to the judiciary, with some of its trainees occupying high-ranking positions in government and federal courts. Critics argue that ADF's efforts contribute to the convergence of conservative Christian views into law, potentially eroding the separation between church and state. STORY 7: How an LA marriage fraud scheme helped over 300 people obtain green cards Engilbert Ulan, a key participant in a marriage fraud scheme orchestrated by his boss, Marcialito "Mars" Biol Benitez, has been convicted of conspiracy to commit marriage fraud and immigration document fraud in Boston. Ulan assisted in arranging sham marriages, primarily involving Brazilian nationals, to help clients obtain green cards. Benitez, the architect of the operation, pleaded guilty in August. The fraudulent marriages involved payments of up to $30,000, and the scheme led to over 300 fake marriages. Ulan faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, becoming the 10th person convicted in the case. We'll have final thoughts after this. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Detroit Tigers 4, Milwaukee Brewers 3 Toronto Blue Jays 7, Chicago White Sox 0 Chicago Cubs 6, San Diego Padres 0 Tigers 4, Brewers 3 – Carpenter homers, Tigers hold Brewers in check with 4-3 win Kerry Carpenter hit a three-run home run and four Detroit Tigers pitchers held the Milwaukee Brewers in check, as Detroit beat Milwaukee 4-3. Detroit scored all its runs in the second inning. Three batters fouled off a total of nine pitches from left-handed starter Eric Lauer (3-2) before the homer by Carpenter, who had been 0-for-12.  Detroit added the decisive run with two outs. Eric Haase kept the inning alive with a ground ball single that third baseman Owen Miller put a glove on but couldn’t scoop. That allowed Spencer Torkelson to bat. He singled in Javier Báez, who had doubled.  Milwaukee started the 8th with a leadoff double, but then Willy Adames, Rowdy Tellez and William Contreras struck out. Detroit starter Spencer Turnbull gave up two runs in four innings. Blue Jays 7, White Sox 0 – Jansen homers twice, Jays hand White Sox 6th straight loss José Berríos struck out a season-high nine over seven innings, Danny Jansen homered twice and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the White Sox 7-0, extending Chicago’s losing streak to six. Berríos allowed four hits — all singles — and walked one in his second straight seven-inning outing. Nate Pearson and Anthony Bass finished with hitless relief as the Blue Jays won for the 14th time in 20 games. Kevin Kiermaier hit a two-run triple and George Springer had three hits for Toronto. Cubs 6, Padres 0 – Justin Steele, Yan Gomes help Cubs blank Padres 6-0 Justin Steele pitched three-hit ball into the sixth inning in his fourth straight win, and the Chicago Cubs beat the San Diego Padres 6-0. Yan Gomes had four of Chicago’s seven hits, including a two-run drive off Blake Snell in the second. Gomes is batting .441 with four homers and nine RBIs in his last eight games. Taking the mound on a chilly night at Wrigley Field, Steele struck out five and walked two in 5 1/3 innings. San Diego, which had won four of five, finished with five hits. It went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base. Bellinger and his girlfriend welcomed their second child on Sunday, a baby girl. The 27-year-old Bellinger is off to a strong start in his first year with Chicago, batting .300 with five homers and 15 RBIs in 21 games. The 2019 NL MVP finalized a $17.5 million, one-year contract with the Cubs in December. The Cubs also recalled outfielder Nelson Velázquez from Triple-A Iowa. Cunningham says there’s “no denying” his talent. The Bears have the No. 9 overall pick and no shortage of weaknesses to address after finishing with a league-worst 3-14 record in their first season under general manager Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus. They could use another blocker to protect quarterback Justin Fields. They also need an edge rusher after registering a league-low 20 sacks as well as a disruptive force inside. NFL – Young? Stroud? Panthers reach consensus on No. 1 draft pick Carolina Panthers coach Frank Reich says he and general manager Scott Fitterer have reached an agreement on which quarterback the team will take with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. But Reich says the team won’t say who that is until Thursday night, when the draft begins. The Panthers are choosing between Alabama’s Bryce Young, Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson in an effort to upgrade a quarterback position that has been in transition for the last five seasons. Fitterer said last week he had waited to ask Reich who he preferred at No. 1 so that nothing would cloud either decision maker’s judgement. NFL – Jets GM: Getting Rodgers is ‘historic’ trade for franchise The Jets’ deal to acquire Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers is a franchise-altering move that brings the four-time NFL MVP to a team that has the league’s longest postseason drought at 12 years. General manager Joe Douglas called it an “honor” to have a player of Rodgers’ caliber to want to play for the franchise and credited the culture coach Robert Saleh has cultivated during his two-plus seasons with the team. Douglas said there are still details that need to be finalized before the deal is completed. But Douglas said it is a "historic trade for this franchise.” NCAAFB – Notre Dame QB Buchner says he will explore transfer options Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner says he will enter his name in the transfer portal, but did not rule out remaining with the Fighting Irish. Buchner posted on Twitter that he loves Notre Dame, but decided to explore other options after competing with Wake Forest transfer Sam Hartman for the starting job. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman did not name a starter after spring practice. Hartman arrived earlier this year with three seasons of starting experience and 110 career touchdown passes. Buchner began last year as Notre Dame’s starter, but injured his shoulder in Week 2. He returned to lead the Irish to a Gator Bowl victory against South Carolina. US Soccer – British executive Crocker hired as USSF sporting director British soccer executive Matt Crocker has been hired as sporting director of the U.S. Soccer Federation. He will lead the search for the American men’s national team coach. That position has been uncertain since Gregg Berhalter was pushed aside during an investigation that developed from a feud with the Reyna family. Crocker will start Aug. 2, but begin the search for a coach immediately. The 48-year-old most recently was the director of football operations for Southampton. Welcome back to THE Sports Law Podcast! This is your one-stop shop for all things sports law. In this episode, Dan Lust (@SportsLawLust), Justin Mader (@MaderLaw), and Evan Mattel (@Evan_Mattel21) break down the latest in the world of sports and law. Greg Termolle (@GregTerm) joins the podcast to discuss the latest US Men's soccer drama. Ja Morant, a star guard for the Memphis Grizzlies, has been in the news recently for multiple events pointing to behavior concerns. (3:57) Morant recently stepped away from the team following a two-game suspension after Ja flashed a gun on Instagram live. Other stories accuse Morant of punching a 17-year-old following a pick-up basketball game. These stories have caused Morant's deal with Powerade to be pulled for now as he goes through a counseling program. The Baltimore Ravens placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on Lamar Jackson this past week. (17:56) Jackson was seeking a large fully guaranteed contract that he was negotiating himself without the help of an agent. If a team is interested and puts together a contract for Jackson, then the Ravens have a chance to match it. The NFLPA recently released an email to its member stating that the Bengals' organization is attempting to strip its players of workers' compensation. (32:20) The email highlighted lobbying efforts the Bengals are engaged in to change the workers' compensation law in Ohio. The NFL's collective bargaining agreement (CBA) only requires teams to provide workers' compensation based on the law in which the team is based. Rumors have swirled recently that the WWE is putting a plan together to allow betting on their events. (38:24) This is surprising considering WWE matches are scripted and have a predetermined outcome. The WWE would plan to keep those results under lock and key even restricting the wrestlers' access to the script. Many problems have been pointed out but other predetermined events, such as the Oscars, receive plenty of legal bets. The U.S. Soccer Federation completed and released its report covering alleged domestic violence by Greg Berhalter as well as behavior issues with Claudio Reyna. (53:26) Berhalter and Reyna have known each other since they were around 11 or 12 years old. While the report did not point to any direct FIFA violations, it does include things that could cause FIFA to conduct its own investigation into their relationship and the actions of Claudio Reyna. *** Have a topic you want to write about? Did you know that in the United States, women earn only 82 cents for every dollar earned by men? And the pay gap is even wider for women of color, with Black women earning only 63 cents and Latinas earning just 55 cents for every dollar earned by white, non-Hispanic men. But it's not just statistics that show the reality of the pay gap. In 2021, the U.S. women's national soccer team sued the U.S. Soccer Federation for gender discrimination, citing pay disparities and other unequal treatment. This high-profile case brought the issue of gender pay discrimination to the forefront of public discussion. In this episode, we'll be examining how race/ethnicity, age, disabilities, and other factors impact the pay gap, and what steps we can take to close it. Don't miss this important and timely discussion on gender pay discrimination. Statistics Source: National Women's Law Center

A promoter's lawsuit against FIFA and the U.S. Soccer Federation can proceed toward trial after a lower-court judge had thrown it out, a federal appeals court ruled recently. In its refusal, the USSF had cited a 2018 FIFA policy that its ruling council "emphasized the sporting principle that official league matches must be played within the territory of the respective member association." Today Tom Dunlap provide's details about U.S. Soccer and FIFA's pending Anti-Trust lawsuit. He discusses why it is needed, how it will effect FIFA soccer leagues, and the difference between European and American soccer leagues.

Megan Rapinoe is the captain of the U.S. National Women's Soccer Team, an Olympic gold medalist and two-time World Cup champion. On March 2, she was named in TIME's 2023 Women of the Year list of extraordinary leaders working toward a more equal world. In this episode, Megan joins Unum leave expert Ellen McCann for a frank and lively discussion on pay equity, inclusive leave policies and other ways employers can demonstrate care for employees facing challenging times. The call to “be more.” After the national team's second World Cup victory in 2019, Rapinoe challenged everyone to “step outside of yourself, be more, be better, be bigger than you've ever been before.” Applying this to the HR context, she said it is a charge to make an impact on your organization and on the lives of your employees. [02:46]The rise of the care opportunity. Employee needs and demands for support from their employers are growing, and are key drivers of attraction and retention. According to Ellen, leave is critical in this equation: “Companies focus so much on employees at work. What about those times when our employees can't come to work?” [07:33]The importance of inclusive policies. Employers show caring by implementing leave and benefit policies that are inclusive and equitable, addressing the needs of all caregivers and relationships, not just parents and children. [11:19]Pay equity as a signal of caring. Equitable pay shows employees that employers care about them as individuals. [12:18]Pay equity as a driver of attraction and retention. In a still-tight labor market, employees have new power to negotiate pay. The pay-equity fight won by the U.S. National Women's Soccer Team has had far-reaching effects on the environment worldwide, and women are more aware than ever of what they deserve and what they require. [19:32]Steps to an effective pay-equity program. Think through where your company has been and where it wants to go, identifying areas where it is still falling short and why. Apologize for mistakes in the past. Make pay equity an authentic priority and act to fulfill your promises. [23:39]The importance of the employee experience. Caring and inclusiveness extend to the experience employees have while accessing the benefits you provide. [29:18]Featured speakersMegan RapinoeChief Equality Officer, TrusaicMegan Rapinoe is a difference maker on a global scale. In 1990, though no one knew it then, a fearless group of players changed the sport of soccer in the United States forever. Young, bronzed, and mulleted, they were America's finest athletes in a sport that America loved to hate. Even sportswriters rooted against them. Yet this team defied massive odds and qualified for the World Cup, and made making possible America's current obsession with the world's most popular game. In this era the U.S. Soccer Federation's preceding head coach had a better-paying day job as a black-tie restaurant waiter. Players earned $20 a day. The crowd at home games cheered for their opponent and the fields were even mismarked. In Latin America the U.S. team bus had a machine gun turret mounted on the back, locals would sabotage their hotel, and in the stadiums spectators would rain coins, batteries, and plastic bags of urine down on the American players. The world considered the U.S. team to be total imposters — the Milli Vanilli of soccer. Yet on the biggest stage of all, in the 1990 World Cup, this undaunted American squad and their wise coach earned the adoration of Italy's star players and their fans in a gladiator-like match in Rome's deafening Stadio Olimpico. From windswept soccer fields in the U.S. heartland to the CIA-infested cauldron of Central America and the Caribbean, behind the recently toppled Iron Curtain and into the great European soccer cathedrals, Adam Elder's New Kids in the World Cup: The Totally Late '80s and Early '90s Tale of the Team That Changed American Soccer Forever (U Nebraska Press, 2022) is the origin story of modern American soccer in a time when power ballads were inescapable, and mainstream America was discovering hip-hop. It's the true adventure of America's most important soccer team, which made everything possible that's come since—including America finally falling in love with soccer. In May of 2022, the U.S. Soccer Federation agreed to a landmark deal awarding equal pay for the women and men of the US National Soccer teams. On this episode, we look at what this move means for other women's leagues charting the same course towards equity in pay and beyond. First, we hear from Los Angeles Sparks player Nneka Ogwumike about her path to becoming a decorated player in the WNBA and how she's using her platform to engage the league in conversations about equity. Nneka also talks about the importance of unifying all women's sports leagues to collectively push forward progress for all. Then, host Carla Harris sits down with venture capitalist Kara Nortman, owner of Angel City FC, a women-owned soccer team that is raising the bar for investment across the league. Kara gives insight into the power and potential that she sees in women's sports through fostering fan loyalty and engaging with the community. https://www.morganstanley.com/what-we-do/inclusive-innovation-and-opportunity Disclaimer textThe guest speakers are neither employees nor affiliated with Morgan Stanley & Co.
