The far-right has also long been animated by extremist mutant neoliberal, anarcho-capitalist, and paleo-libertarian strains that in the 1980s and '90s built a new New Fusionist politics of capitalist extremism — a politics that promoted IQ as the measure of individual and racial value; hard borders for humans with free trade for capital; and gold as the only true currency. During the Cold War, organized labor's top leadership acted as an agent of the US national security state abroad: undermining left-wing unions, fomenting right-wing coups, and promoting the US-led capitalist order. At home, those same forces destroyed left-wing unions and organizers. That history goes a long way in explaining the weakened, conservative, and ineffectual workers' movement we still confront today. Pasarse.

"Calls for Transforming Police Run Into Realities of Governing in Minnesota," cautioned The New York Times in 2020. "Democrats Face Pressure on Crime From a New Front: Their Base," claimed the paper of record again, in 2022. "How Biden's recent actions on immigration could address a major issue voters have with him," announced PBS NewsHour, republishing the Associated Press, in 2024. There's a common ethos in Democratic politics: Do what's popular. In recent years, a certain class of political pundits and consultants have been championing so-called “popularism,” the principle that political candidates should emphasize the issues that poll well, in everything from healthcare to labor, policing to foreign policy––and deemphasize, or sometimes outright ignore, the ones that don't. It seems reasonable and democratic for elected officials to pay close attention to the will of the public–and, in many cases, it is. But it's not always this simple. Far too often, the leading proponents of popularism, chief among them Matt Yglesias and David Shor, only apply the concept when it suits a conservative agenda, ignoring, for example, that 74% of American voters support “increasing funding for child care,” 72% of Americans want to expand Social Security 71% of Americans support government funded universal pre-K. 69% of Americans support Medicare for All and so on and so on. More often than not, leftwing agenda items that poll very well are never mentioned meanwhile that which polls well AND aligns with the interests of Wall Street and other monied interests, we are told is of utmost urgent priority. It's a phenomenon we're calling on this show Selective Popularism, the selective use of polling and generic notions of popularity to push already existing rightwing and centrist agendas without needing to do the messy work of ideologically defending them. On this episode, we look at the development and implementation of Selective Popularism, exploring how this convenient political pseudo-analysis launders the advocacy and enactment of reactionary policy as a mere reflection of what the "people" demand. Our guest is journalist, writer and host of Jacobin's The Dig podcast, Daniel Denvir.

3410 - Walz Rouses DNC; Uncommitted Sit-In; Abortion Fight Grows w/ Daniel Denvir, Susan Rinkunas

The Majority Report with Sam Seder

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 22, 2024 77:23

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Daniel Denvir, host of The Dig podcast, housing justice organizer for Reclaim Rhode Island, and alternate uncommitted delegate from Rhode Island to the Democratic National Convention, to discuss his experience so far on the ground at the DNC. Then, she speaks with Susan Rinkunas, contributing writer at Jezebel, to discuss the recent developments in abortion legislation around the country ahead of the election, as well as how abortion is being handled at the DNC. First, Emma runs through updates on the DNC's rejection of a possible Palestinian speaker, Dems' decision to drop the death penalty abolition from their platform, RFK's candidacy, Day 3 of the DNC, Canada's freight rail labor news, Israel's domestic discontent, the continuing genocide in Gaza, and the second raid of the Tate brothers' compound in Romania, before parsing through Tim Walz' well-received speech at last night's DNC. Daniel Denvir then joins, walking through the Uncommitted Delegation's platform and their request made to the DNC to have practically any Palestinian speak at the convention, as well as touching on reactions to the unsurprising – yet still disheartening – decision to double down on the party's record of anti-Palestinian discrimination (and support for their extermination). He and Emma then step back to assess why their platform so focuses on pressuring Biden for immediate action (rather than Harris for theoretical promises) and why Biden's claimed “negotiations” for a ceasefire are hollow without an immediate arms embargo, before tackling the successful Uncommitted organizing effort to get Harris delegates on board, the importance of pushing this fight on every level of the political spectrum, from grassroots to Congress, and how those of us outside of Chicago can help. Susan Rinkunas and Emma then look to the fights to get abortion rights on the ballots across myriad US states, first tackling the Arkansas Supreme Court's decision to deny ballot access to an amendment over paperwork issues, the major role Montana's referendum can play in helping Democrats' electoral efforts, Arizona's ongoing schemes to defend their use of 1873's Comstock act, and Florida's attempt to undermine democracy. After expanding the SCOTUS' recent decision cutting down a challenge to contraceptive fights, as well as the role of Comstock in the threat of a national abortion ban, Rinkunas wraps up by discussing the important and prevalent role reproductive rights and care access are playing at the DNC. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton who reflects on an experience at a seminar with Jeremy Corbyn, before they dive deep into the incredibly disheartening commitment by the Democratic establishment to lie to the faces of the US public, the importance of the ongoing protests in Chicago, the hypocrisies of American Empire, and more. They also talk with Mike from the PNW about ongoing NALC contract negotiations and Miranda Mitchell parses through the devastating public health situation in Gaza and the growing risk of a mass polio outbreak. Russell Brand objects to Kamala Harris' performative enjoyment of Doritos, and Bill Maher talks to kids, while drunk, about porn, drugs, and tits, and it goes exactly how you'd think, plus, your calls and IMs! Eleanor Penny of the Verso Podcast and Dig host Daniel Denvir sat down with writer and academic Laleh Khalili and the freshly re-elected, newly independent, MP Jeremy Corbyn, to talk about the past present and most importantly the future of Internationalism. We talked about Palestine, Congo and Iran, about the Labour Party, the welfare state, the climate crisis and the economics of global trade. The event opened up with a live recording of Macrodose podcast which is already up on your feed if you want to take a dive into that. Thank you so much to everyone who came down sold out the event and brought such an incredible energy to the evening. If you didn't get the chance to come join us in person never fear we have the full recording for you here and now - I hope you enjoy the show.

Introducing Digressions, a virtual reading group organized by the Dig and Haymarket Books. This first session took place on August 3, 2023. Every session of Digressions will take place three to four weeks after its guest appears on the Dig, and will be broadcast live. A list of suggested readings—including a discount code for any recommended book(s)— will be made available by both Haymarket and the Dig, and participants will also be given a chance to ask their own questions of Digression guests. Click here to learn more about Digressions. Our first session will be on The Communist Manifesto and its enduring relevance, featuring China Miéville, author of A Spectre Haunting: On The Communist Manifesto. •Read along by ordering a copy of A Spectre Haunting from Haymarket Books for 40% off the cover price: https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/... •If you have questions you'd like to ask China, or Dan, about The Communist Manifesto , A Spectre, Haunting, or their conversation on the Dig, you can submit them in advance using the following form: https://forms.gle/rwQHxyhyrjy7ttdu8 ———————————— More about A Spectre, Haunting: Few written works can so confidently claim to have shaped the course of history as Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels's Manifesto of the Communist Party. Since first rattling the gates of the ruling order in 1848, this incendiary pamphlet has never ceased providing fuel for the fire in the hearts of those who dream of a better world. Nor has it stopped haunting the nightmares of those who sit atop the vastly unequal social system it condemns. In A Spectre, Haunting, award-winning author China Miéville provides readers with a guide to understanding the Manifesto and the many specters it has conjured. Through his unique and unorthodox reading, Miéville offers a critical appraisal and a spirited defense of the modern world's most influential political document. ———————————— China Miéville is the multi-award-winning author of many works of fiction and non-fiction. His fiction includes The City and the City, Embassytown and This Census-Taker. He has won the Hugo, World Fantasy, and Arthur C. Clarke awards. His non-fiction includes the photo-illustrated essay London's Overthrow. He has written for various publications, including the New York Times, the Guardian, Conjunctions and Granta, and he is a founding editor of the quarterly Salvage. Daniel Denvir is the author of All-American Nativism and the host of The Dig on Jacobin Radio. ———————————— Digressions is sponsored by Haymarket Books and The Dig. "How The Left Created Trump," revealed Rob Hoffman in Politico in November 2016. "Blame liberals for the rise of Donald Trump," insisted S.E. Cupp in The Chicago Tribune the year before. "How the left enabled fascism," explained David Winner in The New Statesman in 2018. For decades, we've been fed a narrative that the rise of any right-wing tendency is the fault of leftists and liberal scolds. The electoral appeal and success of fascist movements and politicians, we're told, is first and foremost a reaction to blue-haired wokeness warriors whose language and protests alienate and antagonize Real People. These Real People, then, have no choice but to shift further right, where they find a political home – typically shared with the likes of faux-populists like J.D. Vance, Josh Hawley, and Tucker Carlson – that makes them feel included and represents their best interests. It's a convenient refrain. Instead of placing the blame on wealthy and powerful right-wingers and centrists who actually benefit from the preservation of reactionary politics, or giving credit to left-wing activists for challenging devastating right-wing policies, this narrative instead demonizes the powerless, while insisting that those who are fighting for a better world should simply give up, lest their agitative ways turn off potential allies and create another Trump. Who does this narrative benefit, and how do both overtly right-wing and ostensibly liberal legacy media allow it to persist? On this episode, we dissect the concept that reactionaries' politics are the result not of their own interests, but of a snarky, out-of-touch Lefties who say mean things and simply bring up racism, imperialism and other injustices too much, and if they simply went away, the Trump right would starve itself to death and be replaced by moderate, reasonable National Review politicians. Our guest is The Dig's Daniel Denvir.

In this episode, Johanna and Nathan have the pleasure of talking to philosopher Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò about racial capitalism, elite capture, epistemic deference, and sport. Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Georgetown University and author of a boatload of crucial scholarly and public interventions, including recent work in Boston Review, Dissent, Foreign Policy, Aeon, The Nation, The Appeal and on and on. He is also working on a book entitled Reconsidering Reparations that considers a novel philosophical argument for reparations and explores links with environmental justice. The conversation takes us through Olúfẹ́mi's interventions of the past year and how they help us think through issues of politics, justice, and labor in the context of elite sport. We begin with an overview of racial capitalism as a theoretical framework and its application to the summer strikes in the world of basketball. From there we move to elite capture and how capitalism and its elites relentlessly appropriate struggles around identity, focusing on the saga of Colin Kaepernick. Finally, we turn to his brilliant recent article in The Philosopher to unpack the pitfalls of epistemic deference and how a more constructivist approach to standpoint epistemology might help us conceive more just futures in the realm of high-performance sport. We cannot recommend that you check out Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò's interventions of the past year more strongly. They are accessible and exceptionally thought-provoking. In this wide-ranging interview, Johanna, Nathan, and Derek talk to Adia Benton about how we can understand the bizarre and disturbing US experience of pandemic from an anthropological perspective and what we can learn from pandemic sport in the United States. Adia Benton is Associate Professor of Anthropology and African Studies at Northwestern University and the author of the 2017 Rachel Carson Award-winning book titled, HIV Exceptionalism: Development through Disease in Sierra Leone (University of Minnesota, 2015). The first part of the conversation grapples with how to read Covid denialism's many manifestations, the relationship of Americans to their health care system, questions of securitization and militarization, biopolitics, and how a vaccine roll-out is likely to look. This is not a conversation about sport, but it is one worth your time. In the second half, we touch on a range of issues inspired by Adia's provocative work and thinking, including the ways we might understand Covid-19 as a form of disease exceptionalism in the world of sport, what to make of Vanderbilt kicker Sarah Fuller, and how we might think about injury and harm through the lens of reparations. Owing to the leading role of African-Americans, Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign imploded, and now an uprising for Black lives and against police violence has swept the US and the world. The co-hosts lay out the case that these events have delivered body blows to the theory and strategy of Jacobin magazine and others on the anti-neoliberal “left,” consigning them to the Jaco-dustbin of history. Brendan and Andrew argue that the recent upsurge constitutes mass repudiation of so-called “class-based”—economistic and color-blind––politics. They also argue that Sanders’ campaign imploded, not because of directives issued by Democratic Party bosses, but because voters, led by millions of Black “neoliberal shills,” wanted to end Democratic Party infighting in order to concentrate on removing Trump from office. And they discuss why it is so difficult for the anti-neoliberal “left” to learn from its repeated errors. REDIRECT: Immigration Law and Perspectives

This week we're joined by Daniel Denvir, Host Jacobin's @thedigradio podcast. Fellow @ watsoninstitute and author of All-American Nativism. His book is a must read for those who are trying to understand our immigration history and how exactly we got to this point.  We recorded Friday morning before the news of the newest muslim ban. We will be discussing that next week. It's impossible to stay on top of the news these days, frankly.  If you like the show, become a patron at patreon.com/redirect, subscribe on iTunes, Stitcher or Spotify, and leave us a nice review!

Jamie is joined by Daniel Denvir (@DanielDenvir), esteemed host of Jacobin's The Dig (aka socialist NPR) to talk about his book "All-American Nativism: How The Bipartisan War On Immigrants Explains Politics As We Know It." In an effort to explain how we got orange man, Denvir traces the history of anti-immigrant politics in the US, paying close attention to the bipartisan consensus that emerged in the 1970s and intensified with NAFTA, only fracturing when the GOP went fully mask off. What have been the material factors driving this? How does decriminalization of migration benefit the working class as a whole? And how should left-populist politicians like you-know-who talk about things like "open borders"? We realize it's like the third episode we've done on this topic, but it's important! It is often said that with the election of Donald Trump nativism was raised from the dead. After all, here was a president who organized his campaign around a rhetoric of unvarnished racism and xenophobia. Among his first acts on taking office was to issue an executive order blocking Muslim immigrants from entering the United States. But although his actions may often seem unprecedented, they are not as unusual as many people believe. This story doesn't begin with Trump. For decades, Republicans and Democrats alike have employed xenophobic ideas and policies, declaring time and again that “illegal immigration” is a threat to the nation's security, wellbeing, and future. The profound forces of all-American nativism have, in fact, been pushing politics so far to the right over the last forty years that, for many people, Trump began to look reasonable. As Daniel Denvir argues, issues as diverse as austerity economics, free trade, mass incarceration, the drug war, the contours of the post 9/11 security state, and, yes, Donald Trump and the Alt-Right movement are united by the ideology of nativism, which binds together assorted anxieties and concerns into a ruthless political project. All-American Nativism: How the Bipartisan War on Immigrants Explains Politics as We Know It (Verso, 2020) provides a powerful and impressively researched account of the long but often forgotten history that gave us Donald Trump. Join us to hear Daniel Denvir lay out the grim history and current state of US immigration politics and policy. What should the Left say about borders? Free flow of people across borders has always been a key topic for leftists, perhaps never more so than right now — especially given the realities of climate change. Some on the Left advance a maximalist demand of completely open borders; others (including, recently, Sen. Bernie Sanders) argue that social-democratic policies like Medicare for All require some restriction on the flow of people who can enter a country and access those goods. Suzy Lee is no fan of the latter argument. In "The Case for Open Borders" in the Winter 2019 issue of our journal Catalyst, she argues that the Left can't give any credence to restrictionist arguments by accepting the need to restrict people from entering the US or any other country. You can read Suzy Lee's essay "The Case for Open Borders" here: https://catalyst-journal.com/vol2/no4/the-case-for-open-borders You can also read Daniel Denvir's piece in Jacobin, "How Bernie Should Talk About Borders": https://www.jacobinmag.com/2019/04/bernie-sanders-immigrant-rights-border-policy And you can subscribe to Jacobin at https://www.jacobinmag.com/subscribe

The Democratic Socialists of America are growing — suddenly and explosively. Last June ahead of the Democratic National Convention, DSA counted 6,500 members. Today, after a presidential bid from a self-proclaimed democratic socialist and Trump's terrifying election, membership has grown to more than 19,000 and counting. People are considering socialism, long a dirty word in American politics, in far larger numbers than in decades past — especially young people. Today, Daniel Denvir talks to DSA National Political Committee member Sean Monahan and National Director Maria Svart to discuss some tough questions about the fight for socialism in the coming months and years, both for DSA members and those who aren't. Mark Blyth wasn't surprised by the rise of Donald Trump, nor Brexit, nor the crises spreading across Europe. He actually predicted them all.  Blyth, the author of "Austerity: The History of a Dangerous Idea" and professor of political economy at Brown, explains how economic crisis has led to upheaval in a political establishment that worked obsessively to eliminate inflation and maximize profits at the expense of general wellbeing. This crisis has produced horrific peril, as the Trump administration's first weeks have made clear. But for the Left, it also provides historic opportunities. Blyth recently spoke with Daniel Denvir in a live taping of the Dig in front of a crowd of 150 in Providence, Rhode Island.
