Had to hire an off duty officer today  because the crazy animal abusers have come to town for a conference called Take the Conversation Back.  It's being run by the Calvary Group, who are considerably better organized and educated than our typical opponent.   Meanwhile, some good news.  Tim Van Norman, from the USFWS, set up a call with us and Christina Scaringe of Animal Defenders International to discuss the import of Hoover the tiger from Peru.  He wanted to grant it but didn't want to base it on our meeting the requirements of the law, because he says it's too easy for the bad guys to make the same claims.  He asked us to SAY that we would donate to tiger conservation in the future like we have done in the past.   We did him one better and donated $5000 when he said 1k would be fine.  Our import permit should be coming in the next 2 weeks if I got his drift.   Also USDA has a new lead person in APHIS who sent us all (the Big Cat Coalition) a letter saying they would educate the bad guys about why cub handling is bad, but were so vague that it seemed they were just trying to blow us off while being able to answer to Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Blumenthal.  Anna Frostic, atty for HSUS and Leigh Henry of WWF both seem to be more optimistic from their respective meetings, than what I feel from this letter.  We will see.   Last night we went to a fundraiser, at the Sena's home on Davis Island, for Patrick Murphy, who is running for Congress.  On the way home we stopped at Sandy's restaurant, Tampa Joe's, to pick up my credit card that I left behind last Sunday when my mother and I went their for lunch.  Howie called my mother, putting her on speaker, to let her know that she could stop looking for it, and to tease me about being so forgetful.  Mom said I've always been this way.   I know I have been since the amnesia, but don't know if I was always this way.   Later in the day:   Half way through Denny Mitchell's tour a backup intern called for coordinator check.  Gale and I both went.  I stayed with the tour until they left the property.   Gale said they were asking the intern specifics about whether or not Teisha really belonged to us and about the other OH cats and taking photos of things that regular guests never do.   A small, thin, blonde, 20ish woman was the one asking all the questions and her friend, a larger woman, with a long blonde braid, was filming her asking and then filming the answers, but they seemed to be trying to act like they didn't know each other.  I glued myself to the thin blonde and she never asked another question, nor did she pull her camera back out, which I had been told she was using for video, but trying to make it look like she wasn't.  She was carrying it, awkwardly, and pointing at me initially, from what I saw, and then quit when I was right next to her for the rest of the tour.   She wasn't wearing the vox, but rather had it and the earbud, coiled up in her hand.  Everyone else at least had it around their necks, although a number of people weren't wearing the earbud.  Denny was talking loud enough that I could hear him in the back and he doesn't play the iPad stories.   I noticed there was one male, tall, bald, middle eastern looking who was engrossed in his cell phone, not wearing the vox, and who kept lingering behind.  He wasn't looking at cats when he lingered.  Just his phone.  A few times I had to leave the blonde just to let him know I was watching him too.  He was clearly with a young, dark haired woman of mid 20s and an elderly woman, who appeared to be her mother, who was riding the golf cart.  I was able to figure out that Cynthia F paid for the trio and the cart.  She also bought stuff at the end and was very polite and interested, according to Denny.  The decoy ;-)   At the Kitten Cabana the dark haired woman seemed put off by what we do with the kittens, which you don't see very often, and seemed to exchange glances with the thin blonde, who appeared to agree.  She had wanted nothing to do with looking at kittens.   As Denny did his wrap up, shortly after that, the middle eastern guy and the dark haired woman went to the far side of the golf cart, away from Denny and the back up, and the middle eastern guy was clearly agitated and showing the woman his phone.  I walked around and got right behind both of them and he stopped talking.   The heavy set friend of the thin blonde took photos of the solar relay up on the post that we just installed, all of the cage signs, all of the donor signs, me and the thin blonde and had a goofy grin on her face like she was at Disney land on her 6th birthday.   I followed them all into the gift shop, where the they had all five huddled together around the photos we sell.  They were talking like they all knew each other.  When I walked up to join them they acted like they were thinking to buy photos but no one did.  Then the three younger women all proceeded to take one of every piece of literature they could find.  The man was still mesmerized by his phone. The woman who rode on the cart, and who probably was Cynthia F, bought two magnets, long after all of the rest of them had gone to their cars.   I noticed that once she was in the dark BMW or Mercedes SUV with the middle eastern guy and the dark haired woman, that the red Dodge mini van where the two blondes had gone, closed their doors and led the way out of the parking lot.  I took a photo of their tag.  The middle eastern guy could clearly see me doing it, as he was one car behind her.   As he pulled out I took a photo of his plate.  He saw me in the rear view mirror, because clearly he was watching for me to do it, and backed up, demanding that I delete the photo.  I told him I'd delete the photo if he showed me his driver's license.  He refused, but said he'd show it to the deputy.  The deputy told us that I didn't have to delete the photo, and tried to talk the guy down, but he was having kittens over it.   I told the officer that I'd be happy to delete it, if the man would show the officer his driver's license.  The officer said he didn't care to see it and began saying again that I didn't have to delete the plate.  The guy then showed his driver's license to me, and asked if I would delete the photo.  I had a hard time reading it, because I was nervous, I have a hard time reading with contacts, and he was all shaky, but it looked like H.   I deleted the image and then he asked me to delete it from trash.  I'd never done that before, so he walked me through it, and I deleted it there too.  Then he was as happy and nice as anyone you could ever meet.  Maybe just a culture thing.  AND, it could have just been that he saw me photograph the other car and that made him suspicious. It's possible the two groups weren't connected.   In the time we spent arguing over the photo of his plate, he asked why he would pay money to come here and I would invade his privacy.  I told him there are animal abusers in town, pointed to the officer and said that's why he's here, and that by watching him I could tell that he had no interest at all in the tour or the cats.  He said he was mad because he had asked the intern where a cat came from and she told him he would have to ask the tour guide.   He claims that is what set him off (and it didn't take much).  He couldn't believe we were so rude.  I pointed out that the rules video they were shown before the tour specifically told guests that they can't ask our back ups questions and that our back ups aren't allowed to be having their own conversations.  He told me he has a thousand dogs back home, and that he's an animal lover and would never harm an animal.  He asked why I had singled him out and I told him that he wasn't the only one acting suspicious and that I had taken photos of them and their plates too.   I wanted to be sure the blondes got that message, if he really is with them.   Summary is:  I don't know if the two groups were together and no way to know, from the Zerve list, who the blonde ladies were.  If it is any indicator Elizabeth D bought her two tickets the same day and both Elizabeth and Cynthia had stated they had been here before.  Elizabeth D filled out the release form on 3/2/16 according to Salsa, which would have been at the time of her ticket purchase.   Other than asking about the OH cats and taking odd photos, they weren't much bother, and probably not worth the time I spent documenting this, but I figured better safe than sorry.   Howie pointed out, after watching checkin, that he was surprised how hard it is to tell our guests from the bad guys.  I didn't find any of these names in our blocked list from FB, nor in Joe's friends list.   Hi, I'm Carole Baskin and I've been writing my story since I was able to write, but when the media goes to share it, they only choose the parts that fit their idea of what will generate views.  If I'm going to share my story, it should be the whole story.  The titles are the dates things happened. Executive Scheduling Associates' founder and CEO Mitch Santala talks to ER physician and entrepreneur, Jeremy Corbett, about his three start-up companies and the paths he took for each of them. The Whole Enchilada Team then discusses the interview and how it applies to their own journeys. Mitch begins the episode by asking Jeremy about his entrepreneurial journey, taking us back to the mid-80s and a profound and oddly specific letter 13-year-old Jeremy wrote to himself. Jeremy goes on to talk about baseball as an analogy for entrepreneurialism and Mitch asks him to further comment on the three tenets of The Whole Enchilada: the place, the path, and the person. Jeremy uses the word opaque to describe part of his path and then moves on to talk about being a physician during a worldwide pandemic – how it's expanded, rather than restricted, his reach in helping others. Mitch and Jeremy discuss getting to the place, or the destination, and what to do then. Jeremy even ponders if it's right for him to continue moving even after the goal is achieved. He uses his sons' golf course business as an example to further illustrate his point. There's also a humorous story about Jeremy's dad, also a doctor, and what he said to Jeremy when he couldn't decide if he was going to finish medical school or not. Jeremy makes a point that answers can change depending on the timing of the question. Mitch asks Jeremy to talk about seeing a goal from concept through fruition and Jeremy gets real about his strengths and weaknesses. He makes a great point about why ice cream geniuses should not open butcher shops. Mitch and Jeremy end their conversation on entrepreneurialism by discussing surrounding yourself with the right people, not just filling in the gaps with any old belly button. Our signature question, “Where are we going for Mexican food and what are we having?” takes us travelling back in time to Davis Island, FL, when Estella's Restaurant was still open. Young Jeremy and his bride are feeling the financial tightness most new marriages experience, so we order tortilla soup, guacamole, and chips…and leave the restaurant with a bill less than $11 (including tip). Table Talk: Mitch is joined by Gil Moegerle, Erin Pruetz, and Isaac the Former Intern. Mitch asks The Whole Enchilada team what stuck out of the interview for them and Erin chimes in with her experience of putting someone in a position simply because they were willing, not because they were the right fit. Gil had a similar experience when he started a band. Isaac takes the interview very personally as someone who is just starting out in his career. He says that Jeremy's ideas about there being more risk in not doing something than there is in not trying hits home with him, reinforcing Isaac to not stay comfortable in the dugout. He recalls Season 1 guest, Brett Collins, who said he is not afraid of the word no because “it's not like they can eat you.” Gil shares a story about his own failure when someone gave him capital to start a business and that while it was hard to admit defeat, he is still pleased that he gave it a shot. Mitch ends the episode by reminding listeners that there is an entrepreneur in all of us (does he or she look like Baby Yoda?) and that there is no better way to add value to your world than by letting him or her come alive. Returning to My Monogamous Nature   Carole writes Howie: 18 Jan 2003 09:20:07 EST Subject: I can do Honesty   Dear Howie,  If you are not turned off by pink hair, I'd love to come by Sunday and check out every department of the Howie Hug Shop.  I have church until 11:30 and then my monthly Volunteer Meeting until 1:30, so it would be after 2PM.  I have heard there is a ball game on that most of Tampa will be watching.  When does that start, so that I don't keep you from it?   I was born blonde, but when I got pregnant with my daughter it turned brown, like hers, and never did lighten back up.  I have tried to wear it dark, but it freaked me out every time I went past a mirror.  I love grey hair and have tried my entire life to find the colour closest to grey that I can dye mine.  Funny, they make all kinds of products to eliminate grey and none to cause it.  This stuff didn't look red on the box, nor in the description, but it definitely has a pink caste to it.  What is really funny about that is I always end up painting houses pink.  I like the adobe, cream colours and yet no matter what I pick, when I am done with the house, people refer to it as "the pink house".  Since most of my properties have been in low rent neighborhoods, that has actually been an advantage, but it was never my intention.   You don't want my help when you go to pick paint.   Today is a VERY happy day for me.  As soon as I woke up, to the sound of someone wanting in my gate, I came to see if there was any word from you.  As always, I am just in awe of your spirit.  Maybe you don't hear the rest of the universe audibly, like I do, but you certainly do at an intellectual level.  You get it.  It kind of reminds me of horses and masters.  When a horse knows you and understands you it anticipates your moves and seems to flow as one with you.  When a horse has just been exposed to a new rider, the new rider has to tell the horse and push the horse into what the rider wants.  We are both "horses".  I just have to be kicked and yelled at by the Master to get my attention.  You are already flowing with anticipation and understanding.   The people at the gate were the gunnite crew for the pool.  They ran over my water line and now I have a pool in the front yard AND the back yard.  No one speaks English (or French), so I just got in from pantomiming how to shut off the water.  It could have been worse.  I could have been in the middle of colouring my hair and been forced to go out in public to find a shower.  Or, worse yet, to you.  Talk about seeing someone at their worst!   I never asked you about your past because it seems most people are very private.  As someone who has been alone a while, I know the underlying insinuation of "what is wrong with you?" when people ask why you are not married.  People always want to know why my husband would have left me and not knowing if that was even the case I can never answer that.  As someone with a wild imagination, I have always found that the truth is far easier to take than not knowing.  I will always lay my cards on the table and if you find it offensive just tell me and I will play silently.   Before I hit send last night, "big Bob" called and apologized for "little Bob" acting out his emotions.  He said that to just walk away was to cut his nose off to spite his face.  He realized that his reason for coming to me initially was for guidance in the foreclosure market and he feels that together we can make a lot of money.  Our talents do compliment each other in such a manner that I believe that could be true.  He said that the sexual tension between us almost had to be handled the way it was in order to get it out of the way so that we can concentrate on business and not on wondering what the other would be like in bed.   He believes that in time I will be so enamoured with him that I wouldn't be able to be with anyone else, and that until that is true, he doesn't want to have a sexual relationship with me.  He went on to say that he didn't consider oral sex, as sex, but I told him I am a Republican.  I don't know if he is sincere or if this is just a ploy.  In either event, I don't know if I am strong enough to resist, but I am going to try.   There are several reasons for that.  The first is because you are so important to me.  I had told him from the beginning that I could not give you up.  That wasn't from any sense of obligation to you, because you never asked for a commitment from me.  It is because of how good it is to be with you.  I want to get to know you better and I have never had a better sexual partner than you.  If I am going to revert to my monogamous nature, it is going to be with someone that I care about and enjoy.  I want that to be you.   Perhaps I am being naïve but it appears this could be the best of both worlds  for me.  The connection that I feel with Bob is similar to that with my daughter, with Mary, with Radar (a secretary who anticipated my every move) and Bill.  Over the past 17 years Bill has been to me, what you are to the women in your life that you are just friends with.  That objective male perspective.  He and I have been together sexually perhaps four times in 17 years in between husbands and lovers.  Working with Bob may be all that I "need" from that relationship.  As I think about what I want, that seems possible.   If Bob decides he wants more than that and pulls out all the stops and comes for me with the same passion and enthusiasm he did initially, I don't know if I am strong enough to deflect his attention.  He describes himself as relentless and I can see why.  Sort of like your incident with the red head;  he has shown me enough of his dark side that I don't trust him.  I will cross that bridge when, and if, I come to it.  At least you have the assurance that I will be honest about it.   Until then I look forward to a lot of great minutes with you.  I don't want you to feel like I am just trying you on in a process of elimination toward someone else.  Marriage or living together is not at the end of my agenda.  There is no pressure for you to "work out" as you said, because what I like with you is what I already have with you.  As long as we have that, life is good and when and if we don't have it, then life will have been better for having had it while we did.   As for the clinical issues, tell me what you prefer.  Bob is going in on the 4th for extensive medical evaluation for his lungs.  His blood tests will reveal if I have been exposed to anything that none of us were aware of.  Based upon his sexual history I doubt seriously that there is a problem.  I can schedule to have blood tests run again, but it would probably fall into about the same time line, because it is so hard to get an appointment via my HMO.  Until we know for sure, you can make the call of protection or not.  Do they make condoms that big?  Until I tell you differently, it is not my intention to have sex with anyone else, but if I do, it will be protected, or again, I will tell you otherwise.   While I am on embarrassing subjects, since you are the only one likely to see it, do you prefer * hair or clean-shaven?  I have no preference, other than to please my lover, so whatever you prefer is fine.    I saw a woman once who shaved it into the shape of the playboy bunny, but I Westshore to Gandy best I think.  Then we can either get some exercise and walk up to Bay to Bay if we're ambitious or drive, but parking anywhere near there will be a nightmare so unless we're really Davis Island wasn’t always an island. In the early 1900s, a hurricane cut a path through a peninsula that stuck out into Core Sound, separating a stately home from the mainland. Years later, a man achieved his childhood dream of living in that home. What he found was peace and beauty, and a love story that came to him, in an isolated place, with an unexpected knock on his door. Welcome to the big episode from Tampa featuring the Gasparilla Distance Classic Weekend, more fast and fresh food from Asian Kitchen, and a great cocktail from Sociale Italian Tapas and Pizza Bar! RUN During Gasparilla Distance Classic Weekend in Tampa, Florida,  we ran the half marathon.  If you are up for a challenge, you can do all the races, which consist of 5K and 15K on Saturday and the Half Marathon as well as the 8K on Sunday.  The half marathon is a flat course with plenty of aid stations.  The first 5 miles are on Davis Island.  The last 8.1 miles of the race are on Bayshore Boulevard.  So there is only one overpass to get in and out of the island and the rest of the course is flat!  There are a few spectators cheering you through Davis Island but the bulk of on-course entertainment is on Bayshore.  The bulk of the spectators cheer you on at the finish line and they are so great!  The medals we earned  - both the pirate-themed medal for the Gasparilla Half Marathon and the gigantic Treasured Chest Challenge medal for running this one and the 2019 Donna Half Marathon in Jacksonville earlier this month.  The one thing I like to caution anyone about when I recommend this race is this:  you never know what the weather will be like and it is usually extremely humid, so hydrate and keep up with any nutrition that you have been successful with in the past during long runs.  Last year, we did not hydrate enough and got really sick after the race so we could not attend the after party (so sad because the Columbia Restaurant was there with great food!).  So this year, while it was overcast, it was still very humid, so hydration in South Florida races is key.  I recommend this race to anyone.  It has a generous time limit, I’ve never seen someone picked up for going too slow (just encouraged to finish on the sidewalk) and is a fun and flat run. EAT We have shown you several great dishes this week from Asian Kitchen.  Owner, Lisa Larkin, and her staff are killing it in this fast and fresh arena, and they’ve only been open two months!  This time we feature one of my favorites and a great “carbo loading” kind of meal, Pad Thai.  But in this case, remember that you can choose your protein!  So we tried it with the brisket that they smoke right here with their own spice rub, too!  It was so tender.  The barbecue went perfectly with the peanut flavors that are traditional in the dish and the noodles were cooked perfectly and just soaked up both to provide the perfect bite.  Textures were out of this world as well.  The soft scrambled egg, freshness of cilantro, the crunch of both peanuts and bean sprouts, as well as the almost opaque noodles meant so much goodness and variety in every bite!   DRINK We indulged in a refreshing original cocktail at Sociale Italian Tapas and Pizza Bar.   We want to come back and try their tapas and pizza for sure.  What a way to celebrate the completion of your race!  It was their watermelon margarita called La Zia.  It includes tequila, lime, muddled jalapeños with the seeds and watermelon purée made fresh.  Krystal, bartender at Sociale Italian Tapas and Pizza Bar took us through a demo and let us try it.  It was refreshing, slightly sweet, the acid from the lime was great, and the spice from the jalapeños is not overwhelming!  We can’t wait to come back to Tampa and have a meal at Sociale Italian Tapas and Pizza Bar as well as indulge in some cocktails named after specific areas from around Tampa Bay!  Hope to see you there! Hey Weight Loss Nation! www.TheWeightLossNation.com It's Friday....and it is a Concoction Friday! On our last episode, (S3 Episode 13) I told you about the Diamond in the rough I found on Davis Island in Tampa, FL, called..... Tasty Roots! A grab n' go cafe, that offers organic, non-gmo, fresh pre-made meals daily. I bought three different meals and after eating them, I'm ready to review them! The first meal I ate, was a nut-crusted eggplant with quinoa dish. The eggplant was coated with a nut-based crust and also had a serving of quinoa. I never had eggplant with a "nut crust." Very different then I've ever had. I'm use to having eggplant coated with "bread crumbs." After my mom or grandmother would dip the eggplant in egg wash, the eggplant would then be dipped in bread crumbs and then "fried" in a pan. Or......after the eggplant was fried, they were layered in a pan with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese...for eggplant parmesian! The meal was good! Certainly very, very healthy! I'm just not use to having eggplant with a nut-based coating.  So....for that reason only, I'm giving the eggplant & quinoa meal ....... 1 1/2 thumbs up! Second meal I tried.....was the beef bone broth. I didn't know what to do with the bone broth.....so I added lots of veggies and grilled chicken and ate it like soup. Overall, the broth is pretty "bland." Adding the veggies and chicken, it definitely added flavor. I love the fact the beef bone broth comes from grass-fed cows, with no hormones or anti-biotics. Just organic, non-gmo beef bone broth. For good health.....the broth gets a big 2+++ thumbs up! For taste.....the broth is pretty bland....I have to give it a 1  weight loss nation thumb's up! Finally, I had the Turkey with mashed sweet potatoes and green beans. I never have Turkey! I usually only have it on Thanksgiving or if someone else roasts a Turkey. So..for me....this was a treat! The Turkey is all white meat, organic, non-gmo, free range turkeys. The sweet potato and green beans are organic and non-gmo. The overall taste was great! Garlic with salt & pepper on the turkey. Cinnamon and coconut milk on the mashed sweet potatoes and salt n pepper on the green beans. Delish! I give this meal a big 2 weight Loss Nation thumbs up! Hey Weight Loss Nation! It’s Tampa Bay Tuesday! That’s right! I have an awesome, Healthy place for you to check out if you live in the Tampa Bay area. Today…..I am reviewing “Tasty Roots” “Tasty Roots” is a small brick n mortar store, located on beautiful “Davis Island” in Tampa. Standing among the beautiful shops and restaurants in the “down town” section of Davis Island….. stands “Tasty Roots.” I walked in and standing at the register is a sweet, young lady, who immediately says “Hi” to me and she smiles. I LOVE when people smile at me. Don’t you love that! It immediately makes you smile right back at that person.     You automatically feel better when you smile! I was introduced to this wonderful woman, by my friend Sarah, and this woman turns out to be the owner of “Tasty Roots” Her name is Kirstin Coolman. I start speaking with Kirstin and I tell her all about Weight Loss Nation…… and my long-term healthy lifestyle. Kirstin tells me that she is also living a long-term healthy lifestyle and she tells me how she “Loves” to “create” her healthy meals…….every day!..... for the people on Davis Island. I love that. FRESH meals made daily!! I walk over to the refrigerators and there are a lot of choices! “Tasty Roots” has meal choices with meat…. Or… without meat. Tasty Roots has meals with Chicken…. Beef…. Salmon… tuna and turkey. For Veggies….Tasty Roots has a HUGE variety…..they use.. Beets, Bell Pepper, Broccoli, Brussels Sprout, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Collard Greens, Green Beans,Mushrooms, Onions, Peas, Spinach, Tomatoes and Zucchini. Tasty Roots offers a variety….of healthy pre-made meals ….that cater to many different Meal Plans….. including traditional ….. gluten-free, paleo, vegan, vegetarian,                                                pescatarian (which I had no idea what that was until Kirstin told me it is a person who doesn’t eat meat, except for Fish.) “Tasty Roots” offer custom meal plans, snacks, teas, cold brew coffee, fresh produce……raw and vegan desserts…..,and….. Bone Broths! All the ingredients that Tasty Roots use…. are ORGANIC  and NONGMO! “Tasty Roots” …….IS…….an Organic Grab N' Go Cafe.   That’s the best way for me to describe it.                                         All their meals are made with ingredients that are organic & Non- GMO, sourced from local farms…..AND…..the meals are made from SCRATCH!  Just like your mom or Grandmother would make. I looked over the meals in the refrigerator and picked out Three pre-made meals. I picked out Turkey….with Green Beans & Sweet Potato, because I LOVE Sweet Potatoes and I never make Turkey….which…..I also Love! I picked out Grilled Eggplant in an almond crust with quinoa…because….I friggin LOVE Eggplant….which I NEVER Cook….because I SUCK at Cooking…..AND….I LOVE Quinoa! And I picked out a quart of Bone Broth. Why? Because I’ve been hearing & reading all about “Bone Broth” and I want to taste what it’s all about!  The meals have a “use by date” written directly on the label, to ensure great taste and food safety, since they don’t use and “preservatives.” The portion is made as “one serving” which comes in a plastic container. Looks a little “skimpy” to me……since I eat like a friggin “Football Player.” We’ll see if that fills me up. It would probably fill up 99% of the people who eat that meal…….I just happen to be the 1%, who has a “portion control” issue right now! OK….we’ll see. My EYES are getting the best of me right now. Anyway….The prices are a bit high……which I expected…..due to the meals being pre-made and Organic. Meals with “meat” range from $10.75 up to $14.50 for the Salmon. Vegetarian meals range from $9 to $10.75 The Turkey meal I picked out was $12.75 & the Eggplant meal was $9.00. The Quart of Bone Broth was $19.00. I could have bought the “chicken broth” at $8.00 a quart.. but I really wanted to taste the “Bone Broth.” The place is very, very clean. Even the glass on the refrigerator doors are clean! Very impressed with how clean and organized “Tasty Roots” is. I bought the Bone Broth Frozen…..so it kept my other 2 meals nice n cold for the trip home. I’m going to eat these meals and let you know on “Concoction Friday” if I liked them or NOT.
