I've shared that one of the unexpected unhurriers of my life has been suffering. And much of that suffering has been more a suffering of soul than physical suffering. Anxiety and depression have too often been familiar companions throughout my life.  For that reason, I'm glad to have a chance to speak with Alan Noble about his recently released book, On Getting Out of Bed: The Burden & Gift of Living. In it, he shares his own journey with inner suffering like anxiety and depression, and he offers us a vision of how we might discover the grace of God right in the middle of all that. I'm hopeful you'll find grace for the hard places in your own soul's journey.  Alan Noble (PhD, Baylor University) is associate professor of English at Oklahoma Baptist University, cofounder and editor in chief of Christ and Pop Culture, and an advisor for the AND Campaign. He has written for the Atlantic, Vox, BuzzFeed, The Gospel Coalition, Christianity Today, and First Things. “God is using us to testify to His goodness, but that's not why He loves us.” - Alan NobleFor many people, sorrow, anxiety, and mental illness are everyday experiences. We can see this as clear as day in a post-COVID world, and while we have made tremendous advancements in therapy and psychiatry, the burden of living still comes down to mundane choices that we each must make.Alan Noble joins Michael to discuss caring for yourself when you don't want to. When it's essential to rise above your circumstances and put one foot in front of another. They'll discuss Alan's latest book, which Intervarsity Press published, called "On Getting Out of Bed: The Burden and Gift of Living." Alan Noble is an associate professor of English at Oklahoma Baptist University. He has written for the Atlantic, Vox, The Gospel Coalition, Christianity Today, and First Things. He is also the author of Disruptive Witness, and You Are Not Your Own.This is a deeply personal conversation for both of them, and we invite you to join Michael and Alan as they teach us how to steward our suffering.__________Discover how the barrier built by porn addiction can become a bridge to abundant life. What if lust for porn is really a search for true passion? In a world where there are 68 million searches for pornography every day and where over 70 percent of Christian men report viewing porn in the last year, it's no surprise that more and more men struggle with an addiction to this false fantasy. Common wisdom says if they just had more willpower or more faith, their fight would be over. Disruptive Witness is a must read for anyone working directly with young adults or with interest in reaching younger generations with the gospel. After reading the introduction and first chapter, I bought ten copies of the book to give away. Despite Alan's stubbornness and refusal to just tell me what the second half of the book entailed, I finished the book and loved it! My guest is Alan Noble. His new book is Disruptive Witness: Speaking Truth in a Distracted Age (https://www.amazon.com/Disruptive-Witness-Speaking-Truth-Distracted/dp/083084483X). These two trends define life in Western society today. We are increasingly addicted to habits―and devices―that distract and "buffer" us from substantive reflection and deep engagement with the world. And we live in what Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor calls "a secular age"―an age in which all beliefs are equally viable and real transcendence is less and less plausible. Drawing on Taylor's work, Alan Noble describes how these realities shape our thinking and affect our daily lives. Too often Christians have acquiesced to these trends, and the result has been a church that struggles to disrupt the ingrained patterns of people's lives. But the gospel of Jesus is inherently disruptive: like a plow, it breaks up the hardened surface to expose the fertile earth below. In this book Noble lays out individual, ecclesial, and cultural practices that disrupt our society's deep-rooted assumptions and point beyond them to the transcendent grace and beauty of Jesus. Disruptive Witness casts a new vision for the evangelical imagination, calling us away from abstraction and cliché to a more faithful embodiment of the gospel for our day. Alan Noble (PhD, Baylor University) is assistant professor of English at Oklahoma Baptist University and cofounder and editor-in-chief of Christ and Pop Culture. Special Guest: Alan Noble.
