Music Intro by: Gail NoblesPhoto: Wikimedia Public DomainToday we're diving deep into one of the grooviest grooves to ever hit the charts! You know the name, you know the moves, and you definitely know the magic—I'm talking about none other than Michael Jackson's sensational hit "Rock With You!" Written by the sensational Rod Temperton and brought to life under the legendary production of Quincy Jones, this track hit the airwaves like a bolt of lightning in October 1979—an electric spark that lit the dance floors ablaze! But let me tell you a little secret: this song was originally offered to none other than Karen Carpenter! Can you imagine? But she passed it up, and boy, did we win big when it landed in the hands of the King of Pop.Now, folks, get ready for some numbers—they're as slick as Jackson's dance moves! "Rock With You" rocketed straight to number one on the US pop charts and held that spot for four glorious weeks from January 19 to February 9, 1980. But that's not all—this anthem also sizzled to the top of the R&B charts, spending five weeks at number one! You see, this was the third chart-topping single in the 1980s for our beloved Michael, a decade that would soon be drenched in his unstoppable hits! According to Billboard, "Rock with You" wasn't just any single—it was the fourth biggest hit of 1980!And let's take a moment to recognize its significance in music history: it was one of the closing chapters of the disco era, but oh, what a farewell it was! With its smooth rhythm and velvety production, this track became THE anthem to get lost in the dance under the disco ball lights—you can't help but lose yourself in its magical groove! So, whether you're hitting the dance floor or chilling at home, you can't go wrong with “Rock With You.” It's a slice of musical history, a moment frozen in time, and a reminder of why Michael Jackson is the King. Now slide on those dancing shoes, turn up the volume, and let the rhythm take control! Keep the MJ sound alive.I'm Gail Nobles. Thank you for listening to an all time MJ Podcast about Michael Jackson.

If you're looking for great Heartland Rock, a great choice would be the album Against the Wind.  Depending on how you count it, it could be considered Bob Seger's eleventh studio album, but it is the third album of the iteration known as Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band.  Seger is joined by Drew Abbott on guitar, Chris Campbell on bass, and David Teegarden on drums.  The band became the Silver Bullet Band a bit by accident.  They were arguing about what to call themselves, and the manager got tired of it.  When they got paid the manager wrote the name "Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band" on the paycheck and the name stuck.  Against the Wind was an immediate success.  It went to number 2 on the Billboard 200 charts in its third week, and it sat there for 5 weeks, kepts out of the top slot by Pink Floyd's monster hit album, "The Wall."  Finally, it topped "The Wall" to take the number 1 slot and remained there for six weeks, making it Bob Seger's most successful album in his career. There are a number of well known hits on this album, and an excellent collection of musicians as well.  In addition to the Silver Bullet Band, Seger makes use of session musicians out of Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, and is joined by backing vocals from members of the Eagles as well.Seger retired at the end of 2019, but he performed in 2023 at Patty Loveless's induction in to the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, so we hold out hope that there will be some occasional performances still to come.Bruce presents this folksy heartland singer songwriter for this week's podcast.. Her StrutWhile not released as a single, this song received some airplau as the B-side to "The Horizontal Bop."  Seger has been criticized for his adolescent humor in this song, but he claims that the inspiration for it was feminist activist Jane Fonda and her appearance before the Campaign for Economic Democracies.Against the WindBob Seger has written a number of songs about looking back on life, and the title track is an example of this.  Seger was a cross country runner in high school, and he uses running as a metaphor for growing old.  This song went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, and he is joined by his friend and Eagles alumnus Glenn Frey for backing vocals.Fire LakeThis track is about taking risks, risking love, and just heading off with a bunch of wild people.  Seger recorded this one at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios.  If the backing vocals sounds a lot like the Eagles, there is a reason for it - those backing vocalists are Glenn Frey, Don Henley, and Timothy B. Schmit.  You'll Accomp'ny MeThis ballad is a little more country, with lyrics that basically say, "look, you may be playing the field now, but we both know in the end we'll be together."  Little Feat co-founder Bill Payne joins Seger on this track to provide organ, synth, and piano parts.  It hit number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Sleepless Nights by Gram Parsons (from the motion picture "Cruising")Al Pacino starred in this crime thriller about a serial killer targeting gay men.   STAFF PICKS:I Like to Rock by April WineWayne rocks out to start the staff picks with this Canadian band.  April Wine formed in 1969, and have released over 20 albums.  This song may be time stamped in the early 80's but it rocks out, and you can't beat lyrics like, "journey to the stars, Rock N Roll guitars!" Take the Long Way Home by SupertrampRob brings us one of the hits off Supertramp's multi-platinum album, "Breakfast in America."  The lyrics to this one depict a couple growing apart as the husband starts staying away from home due to feeling like he's being ignored.  It can also be a reflection of missed opportunities to live in alignment with your heart, and not being at peace with yourself.Rock With You by Michael JacksonLynch features a hit from MJ's disco album, "Off the Wall."  Original lyrics were a bit more suggestive, but these were toned down to fit Jackson's wholesome image at the time.  Rod Temperton wrote "Rock with You" as his first song for Jackson, setting the stage for more collaborations, including the iconic "Thriller." I Wanna Be Your Lover by PrinceBruce's staff pick is the lead single from Prince's self-titled second album, and his first major hit, reaching number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1980.  Prince performs lead and backing vocals, and plays all instruments on this hit.  The end of the track includes an extended instrumental jam which is edited out for the single. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Give It All You Got by Chuck Mangioni Flugelhorn player Mangioni wrote this song for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York.   Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Story by: Gail NoblesPhoto: Zoran Veselinovic - FlickrUsage: Wikipedia CC BY-SA 2.0When I heard Michael Jackson the singer, I never really recognize the changes in his voice. When I listen to him growing up, I noticed that he had a very high voice range. I could not tell when he sounded a little raspy. All I was hearing was a child's voice. When he was a boy, to me his singing was perfect. And when I would try to sing with his records, I didn't feel comfortable singing in high range with him. Michael could sing very high and loud. I wasn't a loud singer. I just sing out enough to be heard. Singing along with Michael's voice was never easy.Ben the two of us need look no more…Starting out with him was OK, but when he started singing in that high range …With the friend to call my own….. that's the part that's not always easy. When I begin listening to Michael Jackson, when he was at age 18 or 19, then I noticed that he was no longer singing like little Michael Jackson. I noticed his voice changed then, but I never paid much attention to it because I loved his singing still. To my ears he had a great sounding voice as an adult soprano.Just a little bit of you everyday…Michael still had a beautiful young sounding voice is a young man. When he started singing his hit singles in his 20s like Rock With You, I noticed the shake in his voice more. ...close your eyes, Let the rhythm get into you.And as the years went by, as Michael Jackson got older, his voice changed some more. His voice got more raspy and sometimes deep. But even his raspy voice sounded good to me. I still enjoyed hearing him sing because I could still hear Michael Jackson.I'm Gail Nobles. Thank you for tuning in and goodbye for now.

I don't know a dance that he couldn't do. Music was all over Michael. He could express music through his body moves. He had a natural talent for dancing as well as singing. Michael Jackson was a very rhythmatic man. Whenever I think of him, I think of some of his dance songs from his Off The Wall album. Rock With You is my favorite song from the album. Then there is Working Day and Night and Dont stop Til You Get Enough is another one. Those songs were perfect for Michael. He could really move to the rhythm and beat of those songs with all his heart and soul. And we can't forget the songs that Michael Jackson danced to from his Thriller album. Beat It, Billie Jean, and Thriller. You know Michael Jackson has been dancing and singing since his childhood. He was with rhythmatic singing and dancing with his brothers. We know them as the Jackson 5 singing I Want You Back, The Love You Save, and many more. Michael Jackson is someone I can't forget. All the world stood up and gave him an applause at Motown 25. After his performance of Billie Jean, he received a standing ovation. I'll never forget It.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Nikki Yanofsky over Zoom video!Montreal based jazz singer Nikki Yanofsky returns today with the release of her new album ‘Nikki By Starlight' via MNRK Music Group – a 15-track voyage through vintage jazz standards from storied musicians Frank Sinatra, Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, and more. ‘Nikki By Starlight' was co-produced with the JUNO-winning producer/composer Paul Shrofel and features contributions from Stevie Wonder's bandmate Greg Phillinganes, Nathan East (Eric Clapton, Herbie Hancock, Michael Jackson) and the iconic Cuban-American jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval.Yanofsky recorded these songs on a vintage RCA 77C, the microphone that was used by Ella Fitzgerald. Yanofsky's transportive musical touch brings the Great American Songbook into the 21st century, providing a chance for new audiences and existing fans alike to fall in love with a refreshed style.Ultimately, ‘Nikki By Starlight' is a mix of ballads, uptempo tracks and sambas that make you believe in teleportation. “Comes Love” has a real slinky vibe reminiscent of an old-fashioned speakeasy, “C'est Si Bon'' is a nod to 1960s Paris with a very classic French arrangement, “West Coast Blues'' features a pocketed ensemble with Greg Phillinganes on organ and a Lalo Schifrin inspired horn solo, and “Estate” is an Italian classic featuring Arturo Sandovel's signature trumpet. With ‘Nikki By Starlight,' Yanofsky continues to prove her artistry – stemming all the way back to when she sang the National Anthem on live television at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver in front of 3.2 billion people. Yanofsky's self-titled album ‘Nikki,' released in 2010, gained the attention of the late prolific songwriter Rod Temperton (“Thriller,” “Rock With You,” “Boogie Nights”), who took her under his wing becoming her mentor, creative coach and musical champion. Her sophomore effort Little Secret, found Yanofsky exploring the velvet-clad sweet spot between jazz and pop with bold sentiments that signaled a self-assured coming of age. In 2020 she released ‘Turn Down The Sound,' a 10-track LP (eOne Music) that showcases her independence and marks a newfound departure for her career as a young musician, earning praise upon release from Billboard, Uproxx, and more.We want to hear from you! The future king of pop, Michael Joseph Jackson, was born on August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana.   Joe Jackson, Michael's dad, was a former boxer and crane operator at U.S. Steel during the 1950s in Gary – according to a fantastic article by Rolling Stone, quoted in the book; Dave Marsh's Trapped: Michael Jackson and the Crossover Dream, there were actual quotas in place on how many black workers were allowed to move up the ladder into skilled trades in the city's mills. This idiocy meant black workers were paid less than white workers. Unfortunately, this also meant they were subject to higher rates of fatal industry-related illnesses – but Papa Joe hoped that music would lift his life. Michael's mother, Katherine Scruse, was from Alabama but lived in East Chicago, Indiana when she met Joe. Momma Katherine played clarinet and piano, had dreams of being a country-and-western performer, worked part-time at Sears, and was a Jehovah's Witness. She grew up listening to country & western music, and even though she had a dream to be a musician, she was stricken with a bout of polio that had left her with an unfortunate and permanent limp. Papa Joe and Momma Katherine were young when they married in 1949 and started on the idea of a big ol family. The first of the bunch was Maureen (aka Rebbie) in 1950, then Sigmund (aka Jackie) in 1951, Toriano (Tito) followed up in 1953, Jermaine in 1954, La Toya in 1956, Marlon in 1957. Then there came Michael in 1958, Randy in 1961, and little baby Janet in 1966, making her 16 years younger than Rebbie. Marlon was actually a twin but their brother, Brandon, died shortly after birth.   M.J. and his cluster of brothers and sisters constantly had music around them. Papa Joe was super into the new electric R&B sound tearing up Chicago, which wasn't far away, not to mention the beginning stages of early rock & roll. So Papa Joe formed a band with his brothers called "the Falcons," making some extra coin in the surrounding area at parties and small clubs. In his 1988 autobiography, Moonwalk, Michael wrote, "They would do some of the great early rock & roll and blues songs by Chuck Berry, Little Richard … you name it," Going on to say, "All those styles were amazing, and each had an influence on … us, though we were too young to know it at the time."   The Falcons eventually broke up, and Papa Joe put down his guitar and hid it in his bedroom closet. He wouldn't let anyone near it, let alone touch it, giving us insight into his control over the household. Regardless of Papa Joe's musical dismay, Momma Katherine taught her flock of kiddies how to harmonize while listening to her favorite country/western songs. Tito, just like daddy, was drawn to music and one day thought it was a bright idea to snag Papa Joe's precious guitar from the closet and take it to practice with his brothers. Well, guess what? He broke a string. Michael later said Joe whipped Tito for the infraction and, "he let him have it,." After the whoopin', Papa Joe told Tito to show him what he could do on the guitar. Well, Papa joe was floored. Tito impressed the crap out of him.   Is it possible that at that very moment, Papa Joe's lightbulb blew a breaker and saw his musical dreams come to fruition vicariously through his kids? First, he bought Tito his own guitar and taught him some Ray Charles music, then he got Jermaine a bass. Soon he was working all his sons into an ensemble. So, I'm going to say yes, the breaker blew. Papa Joe loved the blues, but he appreciated that his kids liked the new R&B – Motown and soul – and more than likely saw dollar signs every time they mentioned it. Joe wanted Jermaine to be the lead singer with Jackie and Tito, and Michael and Marlon playing the tambourine and congas. Michael has said that his father told him he had a "fat nose" (just a little foreshadowing here) and abused him during rehearsals. Michael recalled that Joe often sat in a chair with a belt in his hand as his children rehearsed, ready to punish any mistakes. Joe acknowledged that he regularly whipped Michael. Katherine said that although whipping came to be considered abuse, it was a common way to discipline children when Michael was growing up. Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon have said that their father wasn't abusive and that the whippings, which were harder on Michael because he was younger, kept them disciplined and out of trouble. Michael said his childhood was lonely and isolated.   At just four years old, Momma Katherine saw Michael singing along to a James Brown song, and she saw – in both his voice and moves – he was already better than his older brother. So she told Joe, "I think we have another lead singer." Katherine would later say that sometimes Michael's precocious abilities frightened her – she probably saw that his childhood might give way to stardom – but she also noticed that there was something undeniable about his young voice. Michael was also a natural entertainer. He absolutely loved singing and dancing, and because he was so young, the choice was clear, Michael was young, AND Michael was BAD. Get it? No? He was fantastic, OK?   Joe Jackson was good at what he did. "He knew exactly what I had to do to become a professional," Michael later said. "He taught me exactly how to hold a mic, make gestures to the crowd, and handle an audience." But by Joe's own admission, he was also unrelenting. "When I found out that my kids were interested in becoming entertainers, I really went to work with them," he told the time in 1984. "I rehearsed them about three years before I turned them loose. That's practically every day, for at least two or three hours. … They got a little upset about the whole thing in the beginning because the other kids were out having a good time. … Then I saw that after they became better, they enjoyed it more." That isn't always how Michael remembered it. "We'd perform for him, and he'd critique us," he wrote in Moonwalk. "If you messed up, you got hit, sometimes with a belt, sometimes with a switch. … I'd get beaten for things that happened mostly outside rehearsal. Dad would make me so mad and hurt that I'd try to get back at him and get beaten all the more. I'd take a shoe and throw it at him, or I'd just fight back, swinging my fists. That's why I got it more than all my brothers combined. I'd fight back, and my father would kill me, just tear me up." Those moments – and probably many more – created a loss that Jackson never got over. He was essential to the family's music-making, but there was no other bond between father and son. Again, from Moonwalk: "One of the few things I regret most is never being able to have a real closeness with him. He built a shell around himself over the years, and once he stopped talking about our family business, he found it hard to relate to us. We'd all be together, and he'd just leave the room."   Around 1964, Joe began entering the Jackson brothers in talent contests, many of which they handily won. Michael started sharing lead vocals with Jermaine, and the group's name was changed to the Jackson 5. In 1965, the group won a talent show; Michael performed the dance to Robert Parker's 1965 song "Barefootin'" and sang the Temptations' "My Girl." From 1966 to 1968, the Jackson 5 toured the Midwest; they frequently played at a string of black clubs known as the Chitlin' Circuit as the opening act for artists such as Sam & Dave, the O'Jays, Gladys Knight, and Etta James. Oh, and James Brown. No one was as important to Michael as James Brown.  "I knew every step, every grunt, every spin and turn," he recalled. "He would give a performance that would exhaust you, just wear you out emotionally. His whole physical presence, the fire coming out of his pores, would be phenomenal. You'd feel every bead of sweat on his face, and you'd know what he was going through….You couldn't teach a person what I've learned just standing and watching." The chitlin circuit was a collection of performance venues throughout the eastern, southern, and upper Midwest areas of the United States that provided commercial and cultural acceptance for African American musicians, comedians, and other entertainers during the era of racial segregation in the United States through the 1960s. The Jackson 5 also performed at clubs and cocktail lounges, where striptease shows were featured, and local auditoriums and high school dances. In August 1967, while touring the East Coast, they won a weekly amateur night concert at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, NY.   "At first, I told myself they were just kids," Joe said in 1971. "I soon realized they were very professional. There was nothing to wait for. The boys were ready for stage training, and I ran out of reasons to keep them from the school of hard knocks." So in 1966, he booked his sons into Gary's black nightclubs and some in Chicago. Many of the clubs served alcohol and several featured strippers. "This is quite a life for a nine-year-old," Katherine would remind her husband, but Joe was undaunted. "I used to stand in the wings of this one place in Chicago and watch a lady whose name was Mary Rose," Michael recalled. "This girl would take off her clothes and panties and throw them to the audience. The men would pick them up and sniff them and yell. My brothers and I would be watching all this, taking it in, and my father wouldn't mind." Sam Moore of Sam and Dave recalled Joe locking Michael – who was maybe 10 years old – in a dressing room while Joe went off on his own adventures. Michael sat alone for hours. He also later recalled having to go onstage even if he'd been sick in bed that day.   On those tours, the most famous place was the Apollo in New York, where the Jackson 5 won an Amateur Night show in 1967. Joe had invested everything he had in his sons' success, though any accurate recognition or profit would also be his success. While on the circuit, Joe had known Gladys Knight, who was enjoying a string of small wins with Motown, America's pre-eminent black pop label. With the encouragement of both Knight and Motown R&B star Bobby Taylor, of Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers, Joe took his sons to Detroit to audition for the label after they opened for Taylor at Chicago's Regal Theater in 1968. Taylor produced some of their early Motown recordings, including a version of "Who's Lovin' You."   In 1969, Motown moved the Jackson family to Los Angeles, set them up at the homes of Diana Ross and the label's owner, Berry Gordy, and began grooming them. Finally, Motown executives decided Ms. Ross should introduce the Jackson 5 to the public. Michael remembered Gordy telling them, "I'm gonna make you the biggest thing in the world. … Your first record will be a number one, your second record will be a number one, and so will your third record. Three number-one records in a row."  In 1959, Gordy founded Tamla Records – which soon became known as Motown – in Detroit. By the time he signed the Jackson 5, Motown had long enjoyed its status as the most essential black-owned and -operated record label in America, spawning the successes of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, the Temptations, Mary Wells, the Four Tops, and Diana Ross and the Supremes, among others. Unlike Stax and Atlantic, Motown's soul wasn't incredibly bluesy or gritty, nor was it music that spoke explicitly to social matters or to the black struggle in the U.S. By its nature, the label exemplified black achievement. Still, its music was made to be consumed by the pop mainstream – which of course, meant a white audience as much as a black one (the label's early records bore the legend "The Sound of Young America"). At the time, rock music was exceedingly becoming a medium for full-length albums. However, Motown maintained its identity as a label that manufactured hit singles, despite groundbreaking albums by Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. Gordy was looking for a singles-oriented group to deliver hits for young people and give them somebody to identify as their own and admire. The Jackson 5, Gordy said, would exemplify "bubblegum soul." The Jackson 5 made their first television appearance in 1969 in the Miss Black America pageant, performing a cover of "It's Your Thing." Rolling Stone later described the young Michael as "a prodigy" with "overwhelming musical gifts" who "quickly emerged as the main draw and lead singer."   The Jackson 5's first three singles – "I Want You Back," "ABC" and "The Love You Save" – became Number One hits as Gordy had promised, and so did a fourth, "I'll Be There." "I Want You Back" became the first Jackson 5 song to reach number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100; it stayed there for four weeks. It was originally written for Gladys Knight and The Pips and Diana Ross. The group was established as the breakout sensation of 1970. Fred Rice, who would create Jackson 5 merchandise for Motown, said, "I call 'em the black Beatles. … It's unbelievable." And he was right. The Jackson 5 defined the transition from 1960s soul to 1970s pop as much as Sly and the Family Stone. When many Americans were uneasy about minority aspirations to power, the Jackson 5 displayed an agreeable ideal of black pride, reflecting kinship and aspiration rather than opposition. Moreover, they represented a realization that the civil rights movement made possible, which couldn't have happened even five or six years earlier. Not to mention, the Jackson 5 earned the respect of the critics. Reviewing "I Want You Back" in Rolling Stone, Jon Landau wrote, "The arrangement, energy and simple spacing of the rhythm all contribute to the record's spellbinding impact." Yes, we all they were a fantastic group. However, there was no question about who the Jackson 5's true star was and who they depended on. Michael's voice also worked beyond conventional notions of male-soul vocals – it surpassed genders. Cultural critic and musician Jason King wrote, "It is not an exaggeration to say that he was the most advanced popular singer of his age in the history of recorded music. His untrained tenor was uncanny. By all rights, he shouldn't have had as much vocal authority as he did at such a young age." In May 1971, the Jackson family moved into a large house on a two-acre estate in Encino, California. Michael turned from a child performer into a heart-throbbing teen idol during this period.   Michael and his brothers seemed like they were everywhere for at least the first few years and enjoyed the praise of the masses. But soon, they experienced some problematic limitations. The music they were making wasn't really of invention – they didn't write or produce it – and after Michael was relegated to recording throwback tunes like "Rockin' Robin," in 1972, he worried that the Jackson 5 would become an "oldies act" before he left adolescence.    Michael released four solo studio albums with Motown: Got to Be There (1972), Ben (1972), Music & Me (1973), and Forever, Michael(1975). "Got to Be There" and "Ben," the title tracks from his first two solo albums, sold well as singles, as did a cover of the aforementioned, Bobby Day's "Rockin' Robin."   They were frustrated by Motown's refusal to give creative input, so The Jackson 5 started producing themselves and creating their own sound. When given creative leeway, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye showed the ability to grow and change – and sell records. And with 1974's "Dancing Machine," the Jacksons proved they could thrive when they tackled a funk groove and brought the robot dance into popularity. Motown, however, wouldn't consider it. "They not only refused to grant our requests," Michael said in Moonwalk, "they told us it was taboo to even mention that we wanted to do our own music." Michael understood this: Motown would not let the Jackson 5 grow. But unfortunately, they also wouldn't let him grow as an artist. So Michael waited, studying the producers he and his brothers worked with. "I was like a hawk preying in the night," he said. "I'd watch everything. They didn't get away with nothing without me seeing. I really wanted to get into it."   In 1975, The Jackson 5 left Motown, and Joe Jackson negotiated a new deal for his sons with Epic Records for a 500 percent royalty-rate increase and renamed themselves the Jacksons, with younger brother Randy joining the band around this time. The contract also stipulated solo albums from the Jacksons (though the arrangement did not include Jermaine, who married Gordy's daughter Hazel and stayed with Motown, creating a rift with the family that lasted for several years). Motown tried to block the deal and stopped the brothers from using the Jackson 5 name. Instead, epic initially placed them with Philadelphia producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. Still, it wouldn't be until 1978's "Destiny" that the Jacksons, with Michael as their primary songwriter, finally took control over their music and rebranded their sound with the dance-tastic hits "Blame It on the Boogie" and "Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)," while bringing a newly found emotional embellishment in songs like "Push Me Away" and "Bless His Soul." Destiny, however, was just the start. After that, Michael was ready to make significant changes to establish his dominance as a solo artist.    In 1977, Michael moved to New York City to star as the Scarecrow in The Wiz. It costarred Diana Ross, Nipsey Russell, and Ted Ross. The movie was a box-office failure but has gained significant traction as a cult classic. Its score was arranged by a gentleman named Quincy Jones, who later produced three of Michael's solo albums. In New York, Jackson often hung out at the Studio 54 nightclub, where he discovered early hip hop; this influenced his beatboxing on future tracks such as "Working Day and Night." In 1978, Jackson broke his nose during a dance routine. A rhinoplasty led to breathing difficulties that later affected his career.    During this time, he fired his father as his manager and found himself a new father figure, that guy Quincy Jones. Jones was a respected jazz musician, bandleader, composer, and arranger who had worked with Clifford Brown, Frank Sinatra, Lesley Gore, Count Basie, Aretha Franklin, and Paul Simon. In addition, he wrote the film scores for The Pawnbroker, In Cold Blood, and In the Heat of the Night.    Michael liked Quincy's ear for mixing complex hard beats with soft overlayers. "It was the first time that I fully wrote and produced my songs," Jackson said later, "and I was looking for somebody who would give me that freedom, plus somebody who's unlimited musically." Specifically, Michael said his solo album had to sound different than the Jacksons; he wanted a cleaner and funkier sound. These two getting together was history in the making. Quincy brought an ethereal buoyancy to Michael's 5th solo album, Off the Wall, and his soft erotic fever on songs like "Rock With You" and "Don't Stop' Til You Get Enough," and in a fantastic moment like "She's Out of My Life," Where Quincy pulled out and left the intense heartbreak in Michael's voice. The tears in She's Out of My Life are real. Jackson would break down in tears at the end of each studio take. "We recorded about - I don't know - 8 to 11 takes, and every one at the end, he just cried," producer Quincy Jones said. "I said, 'Hey - that's supposed to be, leave it on there.'" The resulting album was a massive hit, selling more than 5 million copies in the U.S. alone by 1985 and producing four top ten singles. It reached number 3 on the Billboard 200 and sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. “Don't Stop Til You Get Enough” was solely written by Michael. He decided to write the song after constantly humming the melody at home.   Michael won three American Music Awards for his solo work in 1980: Favorite Soul/R&B Album, Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist, and Favorite Soul/R&B Single for "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough." He also won a Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough." However, he thought he should have taken away more.  The Doobie Brothers' "What a Fool Believes" won Record of the Year, and Billy Joel's 52nd Street won Album of the Year. Michael was stunned and kind of bitter. "My family thought I was going crazy because I was weeping so much about it," he later said. "I felt ignored and it hurt. I said to myself, 'Wait until next time' – they won't be able to ignore the next album. … That experience lit a fire in my soul."  Michael told Quincy and others that his next album wouldn't simply be more immense than "Off the Wall," it would be the biggest album ever. Man, he wasn't lying.   In 1981, Michael was the American Music Awards winner for Favorite Soul/R&B Album and Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist. In 1980, he secured the highest royalty rate in the music industry: 37 percent of wholesale album profit.   So what are royalties, you may ask? Music royalties are compensation payments received by songwriters, composers, recording artists, and their respective representatives in exchange for the licensed use of their music.   Michael recorded with Freddie Mercury, the star-studded frontman of future Icons Queen, from 1981 to 1983, recording demos of "State of Shock," "Victory," and "There Must Be More to Life Than This." The recordings were supposed to be for an album of duets, but, according to Queen's manager Jim Beach, the relationship went to crap when Jackson brought a llama into the recording studio. Yes, a llama. Also, Michael was upset by Mercury's drug use. But yet... a llama.  Luckily, those songs were released in 2014. Michael recorded "State of Shock" with Mick Jagger for the Jacksons' album Victory (1984), the fifteenth studio album by the Jacksons. The album was the only album to include all six Jackson brothers together as an official group; also, it was the band's last album to be entirely recorded with Michael as lead singer. In 1982, Michael contributed "Someone in the Dark" to the audiobook for the film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

Summer Hits: BTS - Butter (with Jenna Andrews)

In summer 2020, BTS released “Dynamite,” their first single recorded entirely in English. The song shot up the charts, became one of the most successful YouTube videos in history, and won over pop radio, which had stubbornly refused to play their songs in Korean. Now in summer 2021, BTS have topped themselves again with “Butter,” yet another English language bop that melts… like butter. BTS member Jimin told Variety that they wanted to make an “easy-listening,” fun song, and it arrived as a much-needed distraction from the slow-burn global pandemic.  Constrained by ongoing travel restrictions, the song was written over WhatsApp, a collaboration done via text and voice notes sent between South Korea and North America. Jenna Andrews, one of the songwriters, says that the song went through at least 50 rewrites to reach perfection. The final single is a tightly produced, less than three-minute song where every moment is a hook. The song shifts nostalgically from 80s Prince, to 90s Michael Jackson, though 2000's EDM, each second highlighting BTS's musical savvy and distinctive vocal performance.  In our kick off episode of our Summer Hits series, songwriter Jenna Andrews spoke with Switched On Pop about how she worked with BTS to craft this song remotely and map out every throwback reference. In the second half of the episode, we speak with Bora, a prominent BTS translator who presents the case for why we should hear “Butter” as the first step down the BTS rabbit hole, especially into their Korean language discovery.  Songs Discussed BTS - Butter, Dynamite, Silver Spoon, Dope, Dis-ease Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal, Rock With You, Man In The Mirror, Remember The Time, Bad  Usher - “U Got It Bad” Daft Punk - Harder Better Faster Stronger More Bora's BTS Rabbit Hold Playlist ARMY translators' lyric translations:  doolset lyrics – BTS Lyrics in English BTS TRANSLATIONS – (do you, bangtan / do you bangtan?) Is it ok to laugh at The Cosby Show? To rock to “Rock With You”? To eat with the knife that was used to murder your family? Does bad luck make you a bad person?  It may seem reasonable to separate the art from the artist and the instrument from the act, but Paul says that’s not how our brains work. He thinks human morality is driven by inconsistent irrational emotions and he think that’s a good thing. In our second Thought Lab, we talk about bad celebrities, haunted knives and moral luck.Paul Sagar "Tainted by Association" in Aeon. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/user?u=35146517&fan_landing=true)

Nikki Yanofsky's career I'm sure would have blossomed into what it would eventually be just because of the sheer talent, but it was one slot that she secured at the Montreal International Jazz Festival that would exponentially set her up as a major artist. There and soon after she would be rubbing shoulders and capturing the attention of Quincy Jones, Phil Ramone (Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder), Herbie Hancock, Rod Temperton (“Thriller,” “Rock With You,” “Boogie Nights”), and many others. We go through the years of feeling like a black sheep and acceptance being the key to dust off the negative stereotypes that follow with a label. Even fear acting as a calibrator to share your innermost feelings as an artist and when to use that fear in your art. Rod Temperton being a personal friend and mentor in Nikki's life, Nikki shares some of Rod's writing styles of Prosody and what made the quality of such songs like Michael Jackson's, "Thriller", what they are. Taking these lessons from Rod, mentors, producers and even life lessons, Nikki's newest album Turn Down The Sound is one that pushes the pop genre but gives a tip of the hat to those that laid the groundwork before. Decategorizing genres, today's quality of music, and even personal acceptance are all things discussed in the life of Nikki Yanofsky.    American Songwriter Podcast Network

So round one of the Michael Jackson evisceration is over and the nation is collectively having a shower.A nasty, brutal and graphic two hours and now another two hours to go. Imagine watching the whole thing in one go. No wonder people who saw the full doco at Sundance needed support afterwards. And now there’s been the debate. But it’s a complicated debate just like all real life. It’s not a case of arguing if Jackson did it or not, or if the men who were the boys are lying or not.One of the difficulties is that all parties were extremely damaged individuals.Michael Jackson’s abuse at the hands of his father is well documented as was his stolen childhood as his family exploited his incredible talent. The men at the heart of the documentary are also very compromised. It has to be remembered that Wade Robson, in particular, held his tongue for a very long time. I’ve read his testimony from a 2005 court case where he refutes ever being abused. That said the defence lawyer expertly framed the questions around whether the childhood Wade ever thought he was abused. Which is clever because that was the truth. The realisation of how advantage was taken came later.Robson’s path to the documentary started in 2012 when Jackson’s estate did not give him a job choreographing the Michael Jackson Cirque Du Soleil show. A job Robson thought he was owed, dare I say it, for services rendered. What followed was a nervous breakdown. A book about his relationship with Jackson that never found a publisher. A billion-dollar damages case against Jackson’s estate saying that he would never work again because of the abuse that was scuppered because he was in fact working. The documentary was his final chance to be paid off. It’s a nasty way of life being a grifter. So what I took from last night was a masterclass from Jackson in how to groom people and their parents to bend to his will. It was a lesson in how many people aided and abetted Jackson because they were in thrall to his talent, fame and money. It was a lesson in how when the advantage is taken of people, those victims don’t really see what’s happened to them until afterwards. It’s a lesson in how much abuse does not involve forcible coercion. As to what happens next. For me, it’s the end.I was a fan of Jackson’s music. I have four of his albums. Off the Wall is the best. I went to his one New Zealand concert. It was weird, unsettling and wonderful all at the same time. But I never warmed to man. And as we approach the 10th anniversary of his death this June his fame was wavering until this documentary brought him back into my attention.I played Rock With You this weekend to see how it made me feel. Once it brought joy but now only distaste. Even the title now sounds dirty. It makes me understand the music radio position. They haven’t banned Michael Jackson’s music. They’re just not playing it because enough people turn it off. Radio does not want you to find any reason to turn it off and there are plenty of other geniuses to listen to.Michael Jackson is over. He could never really Heal the World and make it a better place. His music now reminds me the world is a nasty, craven, grasping, selfish and narcissistic place full of danger.

John JR Robinson is officially known as the world’s most recorded drummer. When I asked John just how many recordings he had played drums on, he told me he believed it was in the low five figures. John’s incredible drumming journey began at age 8. After learning the fundamentals and growing up on the drums, John went on to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston. John’s big break came while touring with his own band 1978. After Rufus and Chaka Khan attended one of the shows John was hired as the drummer for Rufus & Chaka and moved out to LA to finish the Rufus & Chaka Khan world tour. Later in the same year, John was introduced to Quincy Jones. Quincy asked if John was available for studio sessions outside of Rufus & Chaka. John said “yes, of course!” and a short time after John was in the studio recording drums for Michael Jackson’s Off The Wall album. Since doing Off The Wall, John’s phone has literally been ringing...off the wall! JR went on to record on some of the most iconic albums and songs of all time including: We Are The World, All Night Long, You Are and Say You Say Me by Lionel Richie, I’m So Excited and Slow Hand by the Pointer Sisters, I’m Just A Gigolo and California Girls by David Lee Roth, Higher Love, The Finer Things and Back In The Highlife by Steve Winwood, Express Yourself by Madonna, Off The Wall, Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough, Rock With You, The Way You Make Me Feel, Smooth Criminal, Workin Day and Night and Bad by Michael Jackson, Natalie Cole’s,”Stardust” and Change The World by Eric Clapton, Quincy Jones’ The Dude, Q’s Jook Joint and From Q With Love, Give Me The Night from George Benson just to name a few. In the 1983 John won a Grammy with Rufus and Chaka Khan for “Ain’t Nobody”. JR has two solo CDs, Funkshui (2004) and Platinum (2010) on his own label, Homecourt Records, and another CD, Rivers Of Paradise, with his band, TRW, released through Frontiers Records. JR continues to produce a range of projects and maintains a recording studio in Thousand Oaks, CA, where he continues to add his hit making groove and feel on numerous hits, movies and jingles. Endorsements: DW Drums, Latin Percussion, Paiste Cymbals, Remo, Zoom, Tree Works Chimes, M-Audio, Shure. Presidential Inaugurations: A Short History

Today is Inauguration Day in the United States. Here are some things you may not have known about The swearing in of presidents. Usually we end of this segment with a trivia question, but today let's start with one. Besides George Washington, who is the only president to have been sworn in in different months following his election? The answer is Franklin Roosevelt, who was sworn in for his first term on March 4, 1933 and was sworn in for his second term on January 20, 1937. The reason for the different inauguration date was the 20th amendment to the US Constitution. It changed the Inauguration  date from March 4, or March 5 on years when the fourth fell on a Sunday, to January 20 or 21. In addition, the 20th Amendment moved the start date for congressional terms to January 3, and provides a method for selecting a president if the electoral college fails to do so. In total, there were 36 inaugurations held on March 4 or March 5. The first inauguration, that of George Washington in 1789, was held in April. Presidents who ascend to the office following the death or resignation of their predecessor are sworn in immediately to avoid a power vacuum. Three of these extraordinary inaugurations have taken place in April, 2 each in August and September, and one each in November and July. The Chief Justice of United States usually administers the oath of office. However, during extraordinary inaugurations the chief justice is not always available. Two notable cases were the first inaugurations of Calvin Coolidge and Lyndon Johnson. Coolidge, who became president following the death of Warren G. Harding, was sworn in by his father who was a state notary public. Following the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Johnson was sworn in by US District Judge Sarah T. Hughes, the only woman to have administered the oath of office. Coolidge's second inauguration was the first to feature a former president administering the oath. William Howard Taft became Chief Justice following his term as president. Our question: Which president had both the warmest and coldest inaugurations in history?   Today is Martyr's Day in Azerbaijan, Heroes’ day in Cape Verde, and Armed Forces Day in Mali. It’s unofficially National Cheese Lovers Day and National Sweatpants Day. It’s the birthday of actor and comedian George Burns, who was born in 1896; Director David Lynch who is 71; and musician Questlove, who is 46. Because our topic doesn’t have a specific year associated with it, we’ll pick a year at random. This week in 1980, the top song in the U.S. was “Rock With You” by Michael Jackson. The No. 1 movie was “Kramer vs. Kramer,” while the novel “Smiley's People” by John le Carré topped the New York Times Bestsellers list.   Links Follow us on Twitter, Facebook or our website. Rest Easy Mr Knuckles, You brought us so much Joy...   I was overseas when I heard the news of Frankie Knuckles passing. Once the initial moment of sadness passed on, I immediately thought that the best way to celebrate his legacy was to plan an old style “House” party with all our close friends, whom Frankie K had entertained and with some of whom he had spend some friendly nights here and in Greece.   Reading the hundreds of comments in the blogosphere only reinforced the feeling that Frankie Knuckles was such a gentleman, such a provider of Joy that only a party would be a fitting tribute.   Since then literally thousands of FK’s tribute sets have been dropped. Some by immense DJs like David Morales, Dimitri and the likes. Obviously I was not going to compete neither with the talent nor the intentions of those guys.   Here is the live set I played on Saturday the 3rd of May. Direct from the mixer. It did not quite work as I had planned. The set may have come a little bit too early in the night when everyone was readier to schmooze, mingle and drink than dance.. which really did not matter as it was all about celebrations.   My selection was based solely on “happy tunes”, trying to showcase as much of a current Frankie as I could and not repeat the amazing but very obvious tribute sets, which one can find all over the net.   I went to the trouble of buying from Japan the “ A New Reality” CD, which I had lost in one of our many previous moves just to get the introductory sample with Frankie’s voice and be able to drop the two last tracks, which may be my favourite Knuckles.   Thereafter, we went into a less soulful and more Funky/Trance mood, with a set, which ending extract I will upload later on this week, got a few people going…   Playlist: 2004 Intro Frankie Knuckles from a New Reality " What's Going On Frankie?". 1995 Rock With You. I did cover a few FK's tunes in the set I played therafter, which live extract I will upload shortly. I would have loved to have received more energy when I played this but peaktime came later and that's perfectly OK.. The joy for me was to listen to Frankie Knuckles at a great volume level and drop live a selection which I felt was original, mixing old and current tunes and hopefully sharing the love I have for the Maestro of House.. I will shortly upload what followed, which was a far messier affair. Enjoy Xtian

Welcome back, don't call it a comeback, to the live music podcast episode 68.  It has been quite some time since the last show and without going into too many details it was a break that was needed but it is good to be back.  After such a long time is was going to take a very special concert to get me going again and I think that is what I have in store for you on this show. The music I will be featuring is the first tribute concert to be featured on the livemusicpodcast and it will be a tough one to follow up on for any others.  I heard about a Michael Jackson tribute concert in April from a friend of mine and without knowing any of the bands involved thought it was a safe enough bet for a good time.  I didn't have a lot to be worried about since there was plenty of buzz going around about the potential that this show would have given the collection of talented Kansas City musicians involved.  The main group organizing it was the experimental world-jazz band Diverse but rotating in throughout the night was an eclectic group of musicians from various backgrounds.  Its hard to truly appreciate the difficulty of pulling off a great MJ tribute show without descending into bad karaoke.  You really get the sense of the singing talent that MJ possessed when you see how many different singers it really takes to match his vocal range and also the number of instruments on stage to create the full sound that a lot of his songs require.  Seeing it firsthand these musicians from Kansas City were able to pull it off that night and I'm guessing MJ would have been very pleased.  The release of this episode marks the 2 year anniversary of his passing so hopefully he would be pleased by my humble tribute to the king of pop as well.  Please enjoy. dattrax: We would like to start this mix with a tribute to a great artist, Michael Jackson. I remember as a kid glued to the TV Set every Saturday evening, waiting for the most popular music video countdown of the week (CHUMFM 30 on a Toronto TV channel called CityTV). Michael was #1 for 57weeks straight. And I heard it every week and still loved it. Kids and adults walking around with knockoffs of his red w/ black stripes and zippered jacket (in his Thriller video). It was insane! This mix starts with the Michael Jackson bootleg by Masters At Work, "Rock With You". The duo of Little Louie Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez. The house music producers today stand on the shoulders of these giants! This one track/ one sided vinyl came with a no printed words or images- just black coloured. Now that's hardcore! How would you like to sell something with no words or pictures? Once people dropped the needle at the record store and you heard MJ's voice- you pulled out the little scraps of money that you had working at your crappy retail or restaurant job. It was worth it. Jim: Michael has influenced artists in the areas of music production, music videos and dancing choreography among other things. You will get the same feeling (that we get) when you hear this first song. Then it's a parade of house songs. Warning: DO NOT PLAY THIS IN THE BACKGROUND WHILE WORKING, because you will not get anything done. THIS MIX will not be restrained in the background! ENJOY! BTW... if you enjoy this mix, then why don't you buy us a beer? There's a PayPal DONATE button on the top right side of this website. For Toronto or Global bookings: dattrax@gmail.com This was an all vinyl house mix.
