Happy Labor Day Weekend. We discuss the significance of Labor Day, the surging support for unions, particularly among young people, and the critical need to restore democracy at work by passing the Protect the Right to Organize (PRO) Act. We encourage all our listeners to attend an organized labor event near you, including Democratic Vice Presidential candidate Tim Walz at Milwaukee's Labor Fest this Monday. We update the developing crisis in Wisconsin's monopolistic hospital and health systems. A new Eau Claire Leader Telegram article where a local doctor declares: “I don't think it's an understatement to say the HSHS closure and Prevea closure caused a medical crisis in the Chippewa Valley. I certainly see that when it comes to behavioral health each week.” We decry the failure of leaders to step up and address the brewing crisis that will surely engulf the rest of the state, starting with the increasingly troubled Ascension hospitals in southeast Wisconsin, HSHS hospitals in Green Bay, and down the road Marshfield Clinics if their latest merger does not work out. We welcome newly Citizen Action endorsed state legislative candidate Angelina Cruz to the show to discuss her campaign for a Racine-area State Assembly District 62 and how her background as an educator and union leader have prepared her for the Legislature

You are in for a treat this episode! Jennifer Horn joins me to give a tell-all of Kamala Harris' record and what makes her the “ultimate transactional actor”. As a candidate, she didn't just “fall out of a coconut tree” – she's been hopeless as Vice President and shows a very consistent pattern with her history in California. I talk about the election results in Venezuela, where Maduro was defeated but caused an uproar and rebellion when he tried to flub the numbers. Then, per usual, the media distorts Trump rally comments to scare voters – yet is quiet on Biden's attempt to undermine the Supreme Court. You probably weren't aware that nearly one million Californians are without access to reliable drinking water and more who are riddled with rationing water – but I break it all down for you. Joanna Garcia Rose from State Assembly District 27 also joins me in Candidate Corner. We discuss the border crisis, immigration, and how she views deportation with multi-generational families, and more.

As the Assemblymember from the newly redrawn 38th State Assembly District, Steve Bennett works hard on local issues in Sacramento — including preserving farms and open lands, water issues, campaign finance reform, managing the economic shifts to a greener economy. He knows the district from the inside out, having served five terms as Ventura County Supervisor, and before that on the Ventura City Council. He began his career as an activist in the 1980s and 1990s, organizing grassroots efforts to preserve open space and for environmental causes, including the Save Our Agricultural Resources, which has protected the county's farmland against encroachment from neighboring Los Angeles County. At first, he would help recruit candidates to represent his group's positions, then realized it would be more efficient to do it himself. And so began his political career. Born in Indiana, Bennett graduated from Brown University, then became a high school history teacher, including at Nordhoff High School here in Ojai. He's been serving in Sacramento since 2020, on the Budget, Elections, and Water, Parks & Wildlife, in addition to subcommittee work on climate crisis, fisheries and aquaculture. We talked about pressing issues in governance, declining trust in institutions, political heros, what it takes to wrangle votes, a day in the life of a state assemblymember, the future of California and the nation, and much else. We did not talk about RuPaul's Drag Race, Canadian monster lore or the War of the Triple Alliance in South America.

Join us for a chill night with 17th Congressional District Supervisor Matt Haney and SF City Attorney David Chiu for an open conversation about what's going on in their lives. What are Matt's plans in his new position as State Assembly District 17 seat? How do they feel about what's transpiring in the nation today? About the Speakers: About David Chiu: David Sen-Fu Chiu is an American politician currently serving as the City Attorney of San Francisco. Previously, he served in the California State Assembly as a Democrat representing the 17th Assembly District, which encompasses the eastern half of San Francisco. Prior to being elected to the Assembly in 2014, Chiu was the President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and Supervisor for District 3, encompassing the northeastern corner of the city, including Chinatown, Nob Hill, North Beach, Union Square, the Financial District, and Fisherman's Wharf. About Matt Haney: Matt has won an election for the 17th Congressional District of CA and serves as the Chair of the Budget and Finance Committee, leading the development and oversight of the City and County's $13+ billion budget. He has built a reputation as a hardworking, creative, collaborative problem solver with an unmatched record tackling San Francisco's toughest challenges from homelessness and housing to public safety and corruption. During his tenure in City Hall, Matt championed some of San Francisco's most popular and bold initiatives. He helped spearhead the effort to transform San Francisco's mental health system with Mental Health SF, an initiative guaranteeing mental health care for all San Franciscans. He implemented common sense policies like 24-hour bathrooms and universal tenant protections, facilitated over 5,000 units of new housing in his district, and oversaw record investments in housing, public safety and economic recovery as Budget Chair. As Supervisor, Matt helped ensure more housing and more affordable housing was built in his district than any other. When the pandemic hit, Matt worked tirelessly to support his constituents, from small business owners to essential workers. He authored legislation to house over 2,000 people experiencing homelessness in hotels and spent time working on the frontlines as a disaster service worker at one of our community COVID shelter hotels when there weren't enough staff. He launched relief programs to keep restaurants and music venues afloat during the shutdown, led the fight to open mass-vaccination sites, and authored laws to ensure workers had masks, gloves and adequate sick pay.

She's also been a major component of the anti-violence initiatives going on in Coney Island. We'll also dig into what is driving Mathylde’s candidacy: a desire to systematically reform government. This includes improving community feedback (by creating new mechanisms such as a community think-tank), encouraging residents to become more aware of their government (by creating new civic workshops to help people run for office), and by pushing for more transparency in the Albany budget process to uncover corruption and improve accountability.
