Episode #317: Derek Mitchell's engagement with Myanmar began unexpectedly in the 1990s when he attended a human rights event featuring Aung San Suu Kyi. Years later, he became the first U.S. Special Representative and later Ambassador to Myanmar, playing a crucial role in shaping U.S. policy toward the country.Under the Obama administration, the U.S. reassessed its approach, transitioning from sanctions to diplomatic engagement. Mitchell was tasked with determining whether Myanmar's new government, led by Thein Sein, was genuinely committed to reform. While political prisoners were released and civil society restrictions eased, skepticism remained, especially as the military, under Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing, retained significant power.Mitchell championed an action-for-action approach, incrementally easing sanctions in response to reforms. While some criticized this as premature, he defended engagement, arguing, “We have to recognize that Myanmar is a country, not a cause.” He believed isolating Myanmar would only deepen military control while economic and political incentives could encourage democratic progress. The 2015 elections marked a milestone as Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) won by a landslide. However, ethnic minorities remained wary, and military control persisted under the 2008 Constitution. Then the Rohingya crisis of 2017 shattered hopes of democratic transition, exposing the military's unchecked power. “I realized that was a ticking time bomb, and that it could go off at any time,” Mitchell recalls. The 2021 coup confirmed his fears, revealing how fragile Myanmar's democratic reforms had been. Post-coup, Myanmar entered a period of profound instability, with mass resistance challenging military rule. Mitchell stresses that external pressure remains crucial, stating, “There should be absolute, airtight pressure, not just from the United States, but from the frontline states to this regime, to say, ‘this is unacceptable.'”

DuimpjeSintelen, or something like it? We are going English this Sinterklaas period, with an American born actor-comedian who's ready to stick our national favourite romcom Alles is Liefde in a burlap sack, to send it off to Spain. It is the Dutch knock-off version of Love Actually, but in stead of dressing it up with Christmas the crew drowned in a Dutch holiday tradition. Derek Mitchell has lived in the Netherlands for over ten years and he has already got his Dutch passport. That must have been a doozy for him, with his language and observational skills. You would probably know him from Let's Double Dutch, his online channel on which he lovingly pokes fun at Dutchies. His sketches have been watched over 25 million times. And right now, he is touring his live show, with stand up and sketches. Amongst other things we discuss watching Alles is Liefde as a rite of passage to connect with Dutch culture, the Revenge of the Nerds and blackface scenes in the movie and some famous Dutch folk who've passed from view. As you probably know, earlier this year Sound Heap Inc. lost a lot of money by signing a 'golden handcuffs' deal with French President Emmanuel Macron.  This left the once-thriving Sound Heap Podcast Network with just one show: Rememberama, the podcast where people remember things. What do they get out of it as a funder, and what do grantees get out of it?How difficult is it as a funder to convene without being directive?Do we need to shed some of the technocratic language that tends to dominate philanthropic funding? What is “radical humility” and why should funders embrace it?Do we need to redefine what counts as success and failure in grantmaking? Is racial injustice such a big/cross-cutting issue that it should not be seen as a cause area, but rather as something that is the responsibility of ALL philanthropic funders and nonprofits? What does this mean in practice? In trying to convince philanthropic funders of the need to shift power is it better to make a moral case (i.e., that they should do it because it is “the right thing to do”) or a practical one (i.e., that it will make them more effective as grantmakers)? Are there challenges for traditional grantmakers when it comes to bringing communities and people with lived experience into decision making processes? How do you balance the value of experience and the value of expertise? Is the process of giving power away uncomfortable by necessity? Is there a danger that even well-intentioned funders inadvertently distort the work of their grantees by virtue of the choices they make about what to fund and how to fund it? How can funders check their own power and thus avoid this risk?Is it always best to shift power? Or are there situations where funders should “lean into their power”, because they are better placed to undertake advocacy or influencing? How important is physical proximity in making trust-based relationships work? How can funders and grantees manage the tension between urgency and patience? Is philanthropy a reflection of those “circumstances of economic injustice” that Dr Martin Luther King identified, and therefore too often part of the problem? How can we make it be part of the solution?Related ContentSara and Derek's comment piece for Philanthropy News Digest, “Building trust with grantees with ‘radical humility'”Grantmakers for Education's case study on W. In this episode of the ChinaPower Podcast, Ambassador Derek Mitchell joins us to discuss the implications of the 2021 Myanmar coup for China-Myanmar relations. Ambassador Mitchell analyzes the current state of China-Myanmar relations, describes its historical development, and outlines China’s interests within the region after the coup. Ambassador Mitchell also examines which areas the United States and China can cooperate in Myanmar and which areas they likely cannot. He argues that while China faces widespread public antagonism amongst the population in Myanmar, it still commands significant influence due to the investments that it has made in Myanmar as part of the Belt and Road Initiative, as well as its continued association with communist groups in northeastern Myanmar. Nonetheless, Ambassador Mitchell contends that Myanmar is not without leverage when it comes to interacting with China, as it can make use of its relations with Japan, Europe, the United States, and even Russia to prevent China from developing a monopolizing influence. Ambassador Derek Mitchell is currently the president of the National Democratic Institute. He has previously served as the United States Ambassador to Myanmar, the first U.S. Special Representative and Policy Coordinator for Burma, and the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs. Ambassador Mitchell was previously a senior fellow, director for Asia, and director of the Southeast Asia Initiative at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

This week on Gateways, Ben and Tracy look at how Gateway Cities are responding to the spread of coronavirus. As Ben says, “One of the special things about Gateway Cities is they have, in their DNA, resiliency.” They discuss examples of how cities like Worcester and Fall River are shifting their attention to actions to help the homeless and frontline healthcare and service workers in these unprecedented time. We then hear how Lawrence has risen to the occasion as Ben speaks with Derek Mitchell, founding executive director of the Lawrence Partnership. They discuss how the "Immigrant City" banded together to tackle the 2018 Columbia Gas explosions in Merrimack Valley, when homes and businesses were destroyed. The economic effects of that disaster linger today as coronavirus shutdowns descend on the city. Mitchell emphasizes the power that comes from trusting working relationships between businesses, public officials, and individuals, which helped his community in 2018 and will certainly be of aide as the spread of COVID-19 takes its toll.

As strategic competition between the U.S. and China heats up, old Cold War-era questions on the importance of values are being asked anew: to what extent does ideology, democracy in particular, factor into U.S. foreign policy in Asia? Mike is joined by Ambassador Derek Mitchell of the National Democratic Institute and Dr. Dan Twining of the International Republican Institute to dive into the past, present, and future roles of democracy support in U.S. Asia policy. The three begin by discussing the cliched idea that the U.S. must always choose between promotion of its values and defense of its hard interests. Mike, Derek, and Dan then turn to how the U.S. should approach Asian allies whose democratic institutions are under attack domestically and from abroad. The trio conclude the discussion by examining how the U.S. might encourage its democratic allies in Asia to see how support for democratic governance benefits their own security concerns.

It was just over six years ago when Derek Mitchell fell unconscious at work after ignoring persistent signs and symptoms that his health was compromised. He was quickly diagnosed with a benign tumor on his pituitary gland that was blocking his body’s ability to produce testosterone, a symptom that goes hand in hand with obesity and the inability to maintain a healthy weight. Relying on pharmaceuticals to do their job, Derek used his diagnosis as a crutch, an excuse not to take charge of his health. Instead, he waited for the drugs to kick in and his hormones to return to normal levels before attempting to lose weight. That all changed in November of 2014 when he stepped on the scale during a routine doctor’s visit and saw that a truth that equaled 625 pounds. In an instant, he woke up and decided that it was time to set the excuses aside and make a change in his life. Like millions of people, he started on January 1st. His New Year’s resolutions were to cut out soda, eat healthier meals and reduce his portion sizes. And unlike millions of people, he remained true to his resolve to change. It was difficult, his cravings for soda were intense and in a time of challenge, his sister suggested that he step up his game. A marathon runner herself, she recognized Derek’s strong will to change but saw a missing piece. He was not exercising. She encouraged him to start moving and on January 15, 2015, Derek went for a walk. He made it one block. Derek’s sister then recommended that he sign up for a 5K in reason that it would keep him motivated to stay active. He signed up for a local race that was set to take place in March. It was this race that began his 3.1-mile journey, a quest that has since gained national media attention. He has defied the odds, he has pushed through the pain and failed. He has picked himself up and, as Derek would say, “dusted himself off” to take another step. He has been the biggest person out there and the last person to finish. He has every reason to quit and every reason to keep going. This is a conversation about resolve and the will to stay true to our choices. It’s a message of consistency and fearlessness to wake up every day and move, no matter what. It is a reminder to rely on our supporters and community for strength. And that finishing last is better than never starting at all. We talk about the ineffectiveness of diets and Derek shares tips on how he is shifting his relationship to food. He wipes away the excuse plate and is candid with us about his journey. It has not been perfect. Derek accepts that he will fail and sees failure as a necessity to true success. This is such an honest conversation about moments in life that wake us up and the realization that no one gets us anywhere except for ourselves. Derek is a beautiful soul who is no doubt serving his purpose by showing people every day that we can do anything we put our minds to.

If you have a facebook account and you haven't seen the runner's world article about Derek Mitchell, give it a read then listen to this episode. It's one of the more interesting and inspirational stories I have seen in a while. Derek has a benign tumor on his pituitary gland that gives him some significant health problems including a lack of testosterone production contributing to weight gain. He's now taking medication to shrink that tumor, helping him manage his condition more effectively. He's also started testosterone replacement therapy. At age 34, with the support of his mother, sister and the rest of his family and close friends, Derek set out to get himself healthy. To do so, he committed to completing a 5K race every month of 2015 starting in March. He just completed one in his home town of Kansas City, MO less than a month ago.Derek's social media reach has grown exponentially. He is highly motivated to succeed and has a great support system around him. He is eager to influence others to start their own journeys to health. He's clearly a gentle man with a kind heart, as you'll hear in this podcast. We hope you enjoy it.To follow Derek on his journey, check out his Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/derekmitchellstory?fref=ts&ref=br_tfTo lend a hand to Derek financially, please check out his gofundme page and donate whatever you can.
